How Room & Board moved its security stack to the cloud with Cisco Umbrella
“All of our internet traffic — from our branch locations, remote workers, and virtual design associates — go to our cloud-native Umbrella security stack. We don’t backhaul any internet traffic. And we’re still confident that traffic is being reliably put through a security engine as if it was going through our data center.”
– Mark Rodrigue, Senior Network Engineer at Room & Board

Hospitality
Marriott makes the internet safer with cisco.
In nearly 5000 properties in its portfolio throughout the U.S. and Canada, Marriott uses Cisco Umbrella in a first-of-its-kind initiative to block guest network access to online child sexual abuse materials (CSAM).
Blocking abuse materials requires innovative partnership
Cisco and Marriott have partnered with the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), a U.K.‒based nonprofit, to detect and block websites sharing CSAM from being accessed.
About Marriott International
Marriott International is the world's largest hospitality company. Based in Bethesda, Maryland, it has nearly 8800 properties across more than 30 leading brands in 139 countries and territories.
The privacy and anonymity of hotel rooms can inadvertently provide an environment for individuals to access CSAM. Amidst recent reports of CSAM proliferation, Marriott sought to ensure guests could not access these illegal materials on its hotel networks.
Marriott uses Cisco Umbrella to manage guest network access. Umbrella's cloud-delivered web filtering, integrated SafeSearch browsing, and DNS-layer security prevent access to CSAM content hosted by sites that appear on the IWF watchlist.
Solutions at Scale
The initiative was piloted at six properties and has since been deployed in nearly 5000 hotels in the U.S. and Canada, with a global rollout expected through 2024.
Protecting Children
Every successful block of CSAM represents one time a child survivor was protected from the revictimization that occurs each time their image is viewed.
Protecting human rights through security solutions with Cisco
Marriott's Abbe Horswill believes that stopping human trafficking is everyone's responsibility. Marriott relies on Cisco's security products to manage guest network access, blocking access to any CSAM.
Testimonials
Global partnerships fight to end child exploitation together.
"Marriott has long championed human rights and human trafficking awareness. Combating CSAM is an important extension of that work. The IWF provided the level of rigor we needed in a URL list, and Cisco's security technology provided the means to easily apply it."
Abbe Horswill, Director, Human Rights and Social Impact
Marriott International
A user-centered approach champions human rights

As a leader in the hospitality industry and a company that believes in putting people first, Marriott has committed to fighting human trafficking and other pressing human rights issues."
Anthony Capuano, President and Chief Executive Officer
Building a safer internet for all, together
"Every company that takes trust and safety seriously — and blocks and disrupts the sharing of child sexual abuse — helps us achieve our vision of an internet free from child sexual abuse."
Neil Prowse, Development Manager
