Essay on a Friend in Need is a Friend Indeed

A friend is a person with whom one shares a bond of mutual respect, affection and trust. Although typically two friends are not biologically related to each other, with time, they become family. One of the most well-known phrases about friendship goes - "A friend in need is a friend indeed.” This phrase summarizes the essence of true friendship. It means that friends who help each other in times of need are real friends. Not everyone is lucky to have a true friend in life. A true friend is like a blessing. Such friendship should always be treasured and nurtured with care.

The Importance of a True Friend

The importance of true friends in our life cannot be expressed in words. Friendship helps us feel less lonely. With our busy lives, it is very easy for us to slip into despair and loneliness. It is a reason why a lot of us end up suffering from anxiety, depression and other mental or psychological disorders. Studies have shown that a healthy friendship helps in overcoming all these negative feelings.

A friend gives us company and helps us improve our morale. A true friendship is very giving and is equally joyous. Spending time with our friends gives us a reason to laugh and celebrate life. A true friendship inspires us to grow. Studies show that a healthy friendship improves and boosts self-confidence. A true friend tries his best to help a friend in his time of need. This may include one's emotional, physical or any other needs.

A friend helps you overcome your burden or difficulty by improving your morale, helping you however possible and providing advice. A true friend never quits our side for his own selfish needs and selflessly helps us without expecting any return. They act as our teacher, guide, our confidant and our companion. This doesn't mean that our friends do not criticize us. A true friend shows us our shortcomings and criticizes us but with the sole purpose of benefitting us in the long run.

What Should We Do?

Friends do not discourage each other. Instead, they help each other reach their goal in life. However, it is wrong for us to expect people to be our true friends when we ourselves cannot be loyal to them. It is said that you reap what you sow, so in order for us to have loyal and true friends, we must ourselves be ready to follow the principles of a healthy friendship.

Like every relationship, friendship is also like a two-way street; we cannot expect friends to help us when we are not honest, helpful, and giving. One of the most effective keys to a successful friendship is proper communication. When we find people with whom we can effectively communicate our thoughts and feelings, we soon develop a bond that translates into friendship and deep understanding. A friendship cannot thrive without understanding.

Thus, the saying “a friend in need is a friend indeed” describes what real friendship is all about. In difficult times, we come to know the difference between true friends and pretentious friends. A friendship that survives hardships comes out stronger. Friends who help us during hard times are truly assets to behold.

Essay Writing: A Friend in Need is a Friend Indeed

Essay Writing: A Friend in Need is a Friend Indeed

The saying “a friend in need is a friend indeed” has been passed down through many years and cultures, showing how important real friendship is.

This phrase captures what true friendship is all about, emphasizing loyalty, support, and being there for each other when times get tough.

As we deal with the ups and downs of relationships, this saying reminds us how valuable real connections are and how powerful it is to have friends who support us no matter what.

At its heart, this saying tells us that real friendship isn’t just about having fun and good times; it’s really about who sticks by us when things get hard.

In our toughest moments, we find out who our true friends are – the ones who help us out, lend a hand, and give us comfort without expecting anything in return.

These friends show what true friendship means, proving that their connection is deeper than just casual chats or only being around when things are good.

Friendship has been talked about by philosophers and writers for a long time.

From Aristotle’s ideas about different kinds of friendships to the touching stories of friendship in today’s books, having a friend who stands by you when things get tough is something that has always been appreciated.

This common theme shows how much people want to connect, understand, and support each other, especially when life gets hard.

One of the coolest things about this idea is that it’s true for everyone, no matter where they come from.

All over the world, people value friends who help them during tough times. This shared feeling highlights how we all experience vulnerability and how important real friendship can be in our lives.

Whether it’s in old stories, religious writings, or modern movies, tales of friends stepping up when needed still touch hearts everywhere.

Friendship is really tested when we least expect it, especially when we’re feeling our most vulnerable.

It could be during tough times like losing a job, facing health issues, or dealing with the death of someone we care about.

When everything feels like it’s falling apart, having a true friend by our side can change everything.

Their constant support, whether it’s helping out with tasks, offering a shoulder to cry on, or just being there to listen, gives us the strength to tackle our problems.

Take the example of Sarah and Emma, who have been friends since they were kids. Their friendship faced a big challenge when Sarah found out she was seriously ill.

Emma didn’t think twice; she was right there with Sarah, going to doctor visits, helping around the house, and being a source of comfort during the tough treatment.

Emma’s commitment and kindness not only helped Sarah heal but also made their friendship even stronger than before.

This story shows how powerful it is to have a friend who really steps up when you need them the most.

It’s really important to understand that being a good friend doesn’t always mean doing big, dramatic things.

Often, the best support comes from small, regular actions that show you care.

For example, making a late-night call just to listen, sending a surprise care package when someone is stressed, or dropping by unexpectedly to hang out can really help someone who is having a hard time.

These little gestures can make a big difference. What matters most is being genuine and being there when it counts.

At the same time, we need to remember that being a true friend doesn’t mean letting someone do harmful things or ignoring our own needs.

Real friendship is about finding a balance between being supportive and being honest. A true friend will be there to help and comfort you, but they will also be brave enough to give you honest feedback or tough love when it’s needed.

This part of friendship shows how complicated relationships can be and highlights the need for respect and understanding between friends.

The digital world has changed how we think about friendship and support. With social media and messaging apps, it’s super easy to keep in touch with friends no matter how far away they are.

But while these tools are helpful, they can also make it hard to have deep and real friendships.

Sometimes, just liking a post or leaving a comment can make it seem like we’re close, but that doesn’t always mean we’re there for each other when it really counts.

In today’s world, the saying “a friend in need is a friend indeed” is more important than ever.

It reminds us to build real connections that go beyond just online interactions. Sure, getting support online is nice, but nothing beats having a friend physically there to help us when times get tough.

Another key point about friendship is that it’s a two-way street. The saying talks about getting help when we need it, but we also need to be ready to help our friends when they’re struggling.

The best friendships are built on both giving and receiving support. By being there for our friends during their hard times, we not only make our bonds stronger but also create a network of support we can count on when we need it too .

Being a true friend can really change things for both the person helping and the one being helped.

When someone offers their support, it helps them grow as a person, learn to understand others better, and feel good about making a positive impact in someone else’s life.

On the other hand, the person receiving help can feel thankful, become stronger in tough times, and build a deeper trust in their friendships.

It’s important to remember that being a good friend often takes emotional smarts, understanding, and sometimes putting others first.

It means being aware of what others need, knowing when to step in or give them space, and being ready to prioritize someone else’s happiness over our own comfort.

These skills might not come naturally, but we can learn and improve them with practice.

This saying also reminds us to be careful about who we call friends. It encourages us to notice and value those friends who are always there for us, especially when things get tough.

By doing this, we can focus on building strong, supportive relationships instead of wasting time on friendships that aren’t genuine or balanced.

To sum it up, the saying “a friend in need is a friend indeed” still means a lot in our lives today. It acts like a guiding light, helping us build real, supportive friendships that can last through tough times.

In a world where many people focus on having lots of friends instead of good ones, this saying reminds us how precious true friendship really is.

As we deal with the ups and downs of life, having trustworthy friends is super important.

These are the people who stick with us no matter what, giving us support and comfort when we really need it. They see past our outer appearances and accept us for who we truly are.

This saying also encourages us to be that kind of friend for others. We should be there for our loved ones when they need help, offering our support without expecting anything back.

By being a “friend indeed,” we not only make the lives of those around us better but also help create a kinder and more supportive community.

In the end, “a friend in need is a friend indeed” is not just a saying; it’s a way of thinking about how we connect with each other.

If we really take it to heart, it can change our relationships and our lives for the better. It shows us that in the story of life, it’s the real friendships that add strength, color, and beauty, especially when we face challenges.

A person is considered a friend when they form a significant part of one’s life. Moreover, a friend can be anybody, it can even be family or a blood relative. The phrase explains the idea that, in times of need, only a true friend can be relied upon.

In today’s society, we are all connected through technology; however, people can still feel lonely. We all need a friend on whom we can share feelings and rely on. Most importantly, we all need a friend that can help us in times of need. Furthermore, it is only during such times that we actually realise who our true friends are. Most of us have “fair-weather friends”, where we cannot rely on their friendship in times of difficulty. An individual is called a “true friend” when they provide unconditional love and care towards you. Other people may become friends just to receive something in exchange. These kinds of friends must be avoided as they may just waste our precious time and resources.

A true friend possesses many characteristics, with loyalty being the most important. Other times, true friends will provide emotional support and help make logical and rational decisions. On the other hand, a false friend will only try to extract what is best for themselves. They may stop being your friend once they have received what they originally intended. Alternatively, the phrase can also mean that a person tries to be friendly if they need your assistance. The general consensus leans towards the idea that a friend will always help during times of need. However, the phrase is quite ambiguous and it can be easily misunderstood, which is how the second meaning arose.

Quintus Ennius, often considered as the Father of Roman Poetry first used the phrase in many of his works. Translated from Latin, the phrase read: “A sure friend is known when in difficulty”. In English, the phrase has been thought to exist from the 11th century. William Caxton, an English writer, merchant, and diplomat, used the phrase in his 1489 work, the Sonnes of Aymon. It read: “It is said, that at the need the friend is known.” A modern version of the proverb appeared again in John Heywood’s A Dialogue Conteynyng Prouerbes and Epigrammes (1562). It stated: “Prove thy friend ere thou have need; but, indeed. A friend is never known till a man have need. Before I had need, my most present foes seemed my most friends; but thus the world goes.”

In conclusion, the meaning of the phrase is quite ambiguous. However, the modern interpretations of this proverb lean towards the idea that a friend who helps you in times of trouble is a true friend.

So that the student can benefit from the ready-made forms that have been written to suit all educational stages, and to suit all levels, whether the student’s level is strong or average, and we will not forget the weak student.

Everyone is looking for a loyal friend all their lives. But will we all find that loyal friend? Of course not, a good friend is a rare coin and it is not easy to meet him.

But there are few people who have been able to meet this good friend at some point in their lives. When they met him, they stayed together for many years.

Life is a long and hard journey because it is full of happy and sad events. Life is also full of inconveniences and misfortunes that may surprise a person without expecting them to happen.

But what makes life the most painful is the lack of friends around a person to share happiness with and ease his sadness.

A friend eases his friend’s misfortunes because he carries them with him, so the burdens are divided among two people instead of one person.

But are all those around us on whom we can rely in times of trouble? Of course not, a true friend will only be known in times of misfortune.

The reason is that throughout the period of luxury you find huge numbers around you, and when the luxury ends, you find them evaporating around you.

But if you are lucky, crises will reveal to you only one person who has not left you, but has remained by your side, even though he is not your best friend in times of prosperity. That is why you should choose this person to become your best friend later.

When I was in primary school, I used to walk alone from home to school and back. I had no friends. One day I met a fellow classmate during my walk. He used to live near my house, but we hadn’t talked to each other before.

He approached me and said, Would you allow me to walk with you every day? . I got nervous but told him to come to my house every day so we could walk to school together.

Indeed, he comes every day and we walk happily together. On our way we would talk and tell stories and tell jokes.

I felt a huge difference between the lonely days past and the days when my friend walked by me. I was very happy.

But one day on our way 3 students came from school and tried to hit us and steal my bike. My friend told me excuse me, I will leave you alone to solve your problem with them.

And from this day I have learned a lesson, that a friend is the one who you can find when you need him and not only the one who is with you during prosperity and happiness.

Essay on a friend in need is a friend indeed

No one can deny the importance of friends in our lives. And I love my friends like my brothers. But a certain situation may occur to me that indicates a good friend and a friend who walks with me only for her own good.

I had a friend tell me I was her best friend, and we would go out and play every day. One day I fell to the ground and broke my teeth. I fell into a bad psychological state because of my poor appearance.

My mom told me to hold on and not give it too much, and that she would help me go to the doctor for new teeth implants.

During these days I couldn’t go out or face people. So my friends came to visit me every day. They said nice words to me to ease my sadness, but what made me sad and surprised is the absence of my best friend.

I asked the rest of the girls and they said she’s not interested and won’t come. So I knew that she was not a real friend, and indeed she was not my friend again.

A friend in need is a friend indeed essay introduction

First of all, we must talk about the importance of a friend in the life of each of us. Without a friend, life has no flavor. A person feels lonely if he is not able to make new friends. But are all the echoes dependent on them, and should we trust them blindly?

Of course, we must know how to differentiate between a good friend and a bad friend. And the way to reveal the quality of the friend is the difficulties we fall into, and how the friend behaves about them.

A friend is not someone who walks with you and plays with you, but who stands by you and supports you when you fall and need.

If you are sick, he must visit you and stay by your side until you recover. And if you are in trouble, he must defend you and help you get through it. But if you get into trouble, he must do everything he can to get you out of your predicament.

A true friend is the one who comforts you when you are sad and tries to calm you when you are angry. As for the one who is present during luxury and does not find him when you need him, then he is an exploitative and bad person who is not fit to bear the title of a friend. This type of person is dangerous to trust and consider as your best friend.

Spring season essay in english for class 10

When we see greenery spread everywhere, we must know that spring has come. The cause of this vegetable is the high temperature after it did not appear in the winter.

One of the most important manifestations of the advent of spring is the rise in the water level due to the heat of the sun, which melts the snow.

When the greenery spreads and the fresh water flows, the animals go out to feed and drink freely, in contrast to the winter in which greenery is scarce and the drinking water froze.

If we want to describe the season of spring, we will say that it is the season of life and vitality, and it is the only season that all people agree to love.

As for the rest of the seasons, people differ in their love for it, some of them love winter and some love summer. All humans love a temperate climate so that it is easy for them to go out for work and walk.

A true friend gives you a reason to cheer for in life.

Our true friends always do their best to save us when we are in danger and also provide us with timely and good advice. True friends are priceless assets in our lives, they share our pains and sorrow, help provide relief to us in terrible situations and do their best to make us happy.

Friends can both be the good or the bad types. Good friends help push us on the right path in life while on the other hand, bad friends don’t care about us but only care about themselves and can lead us into the wrong path; because of this, we have to be absolutely careful when choosing our friends in this life.

Bad friends can ruin our lives completely so we have to be weary of them and do our best to avoid bag friends totally. We need friends in our life that will be there for us at every point in time and will share all of our feeling with us, both the good and bad. We need friends we can talk to anytime we are feeling lonely, friends that will make us laugh and smile anytime we are feeling sad.

What is friendship? It is the purest form of relationship between two individual with no hidden agenda. As per the dictionary, it is the mutual affection between people. But, is it just a mutual affection? Not always, as in the case of best friends, it is far beyond that. Great friends share each other’s feelings or notions which bring a feeling of prosperity and mental fulfillment.

A friend is a person whom one can know deeply, as and trust for eternity. Rather than having some likeness in the idea of two people associated with the friendship, they have some extraordinary qualities yet they want to be with each other without changing their uniqueness. By and large, friends spur each other without censuring, however at times great friends scrutinize do affect you in a positive manner.

Importance of Friendship:

It is very important to have a friend in life. Each friend is vital and their significance in known to us when certain circumstances emerge which must be supported by our friends. One can never feel lonely in this world on the off chance that he or she is embraced by true friends. Then again, depression wins in the lives of the individuals who don’t have friends regardless of billions of individuals present on the planet. Friends are particularly vital amid times of emergency and hardships. On the off chance that you wind up experiencing a hard time, having a friend to help you through can make the change simpler.

Having friends you can depend on can help your confidence. Then again, an absence of friends can make you feel lonely and without help, which makes you powerless for different issues, for example, sadness and drug abuse. Having no less than one individual you can depend on will formulate your confidence.

Choosing Your Friends Wisely:

Not all friends can instill the positivity in your life. There can be negative effects as well. It is very important to choose your friends with utmost wisdom. Picking the right friend is somewhat troublesome task however it is extremely important. In the event that for instance a couple of our dear friends are engaged with negative behaviour patterns, for example, smoking, drinking and taking drugs, at some point or another we will be attracted to their bad habits as well. This is the reason behind why it is appropriate to settle on an appropriate decision with regards to making friends.

Genuine friendship is truly a gift delighted in by a couple. The individuals who have it ought to express gratitude toward God for having genuine pearls in their lives and the individuals who don’t have a couple of good friends ought to always take a stab at better approaches to anchor great friends. No organization is superior to having a friend close by in the midst of need. You will stay cheerful in your one-room flat on the off chance that you are surrounded by your friends; then again, you can’t discover satisfaction even in your estate in the event that you are far away from others.

Types of Friends:

There is variety everywhere, so why not in friends. We can see different types of friends during our journey of life. For instance, your best friend at school is someone with whom you just get along the most. That friend, especially in the case of girls, may just get annoyed even if you talk to another of your friend more than her. Such is the childish nature of such friendships that at times it is difficult for others to identify whether you are best friends or competitors.

Then there is another category of your siblings. No matter how much you deny, but your siblings or your elder brother and sisters are those friends of yours who stay on with you for your entire life. You have a different set of friendship with them as you find yourself fighting with them most of the times. However, in times of need, you shall see that they are first ones standing behind you, supporting you.

There is another category of friends called professional friends. You come across such friends only when you grow up and choose a profession for yourself. These friends are usually from the same organisation and prove to be helpful during your settling years. Some of them tend to stay on with you even when you change companies.

Friendship Examples from History:

History has always taught us a lot. Examples of true friendship are not far behind. We have some famous example from history which makes us realise the true value of friendship. The topmost of them are the Krishna and Sudama friendship. We all must have read or heard as to how after becoming a king when Krishna met Sudama, his childhood friend, he treated him with honour even though Sudama was a poor person. It teaches us the friendship need not be between equals. It has to be between likeminded people. Next example is of Karna and Duryodhana, again from the Mahabharat era.

Despite knowing the fact that the Pandavas were his brothers, Karna went on to fight alongside Duryodhan as he is his best friend and even laid down his life for him. What more example of true friendship can one find? Again from the same era, Krishna and Arjun are also referred to as the best of the friends. Bhagavad Gita is an example of how a true friend can guide you towards positivity in life and make you follow the path of Dharma. Similarly, there are numerous examples from history which teach us the values of true friendship and the need to nourish such for own good.

Whether you accept or deny it, a friend plays an important role in your life. In fact, it is very important to have a friend. However, at the same time, it is extremely important to choose the friends wisely as they are the ones who can build you or destroy you. Nonetheless, a friend’s company is something which one enjoys all through life and friends should be treated as the best treasure a man can have.

Importance of Friendship

Friendship is important in life because it teaches us a great deal about life. We learn so many lessons from friendship which we won’t find anywhere else. You learn to love someone other than your family. You know how to be yourself in front of friends.

Friendship never leaves us in bad times. You learn how to understand people and trust others. Your real friends will always motivate you and cheer for you. They will take you on the right path and save you from any evil.

Similarly, friendship also teaches you a lot about loyalty. It helps us to become loyal and get loyalty in return. There is no greater feeling in the world than having a friend who is loyal to you.

Moreover, friendship makes us stronger. It tests us and helps us grow. For instance, we see how we fight with our friends yet come back together after setting aside our differences. This is what makes us strong and teaches us patience.

Therefore, there is no doubt that best friends help us in our difficulties and bad times of life. They always try to save us in our dangers as well as offer timely advice. True friends are like the best assets of our life because they share our sorrow, sooth our pain and make us feel happy.

Help! I’m Watching My Best Friend’s Life Crash and Burn. I Need to Put a Stop to It.

In we’re prudence, prudence asks readers for their thoughts on a question that has her stumped. the answer is available only for slate plus members..

Each week in the Tuesday column, Prudence asks readers for their thoughts on a question that has her stumped. She’ll post her final thoughts on the matter on Fridays.

Here’s this week’s dilemma and answer; thanks to  Cut Your Losses, Elaine, Sage, Cori M., Sober LMFT, Sober Today By Grace Alone, and Pat H for their ideas!

Dear Prudence,

My husband and I’s best friend is now a DEEPLY alcoholic  NEET  bouncing from place to place while we financially fund him to keep a roof over his head. This arrangement continually blows up in our faces—he’s gotten kicked out of a generous offer from my father-in-law because he trashed the place, he’s being denied other housing now due to his past actions, and we have him safe with a brother-in-law for now since he has no one/nowhere else to go (his family connections are blown up as well). He is states away and refuses to room with us. He tends to spend some of the rent money on alcohol and frequently closes us out of his life.

We would like visibility into his job search, we want him to go to AA (he stopped after two weeks because it was “too religious” and rejected the non-religious alternatives), and we want him to be able to thrive—but we aren’t his parents, and we don’t have the jurisdiction to demand these things (asking with “I” statements didn’t work). We gave him notice that we’ll cover the next three months of rent/food and then stop in hopes he can find his footing on a generous time limit… but now he’s angry at us. We are trying so hard to have compassion for him and struggling to get him the resources he needs, but when we hand them over, he tends to drop the ball and then spit misery and vitriol at us. For example, he consented to letting me help him find jobs to apply to and after I spent a week finding 100-plus eligible jobs tailor-fit to his resume, he applied to three and gave up, citing the job market is too hard and nothing matters. I gave him an easy lay-up recommendation for a job at the company I work for and he was “too nervous” and never applied.

We have begged for (and been willing to pay for!) therapy, rehab, medication—anything that can help him feel stable and sane. He rejects all of it and then sinks lower. He’s wrapped deeply in our friend group, so if we wrote him off, we would still hear from him and be in the same virtual room with him every day! I know this is selfish, but I feel miserable watching him sink. I don’t know how to help anymore and my compassion is starting to hiccup now that he’s moved to actively rejecting any help we try to give (or wasting the money we give—we aren’t rich). How can we help? Should we extricate ourselves? Should I contact someone on his behalf? Normally I would live and let live, but he is no longer functioning (dead mice in the house! Maggots! Not eating for days in order to buy more vodka!) and I’m genuinely scared for his health and safety.

—We Love You, Please Stop

Dear Please Stop,

I shared this letter with Slate readers and asked for help because I really felt for you and desperately hoped to be able to provide you with advice other than, “Yes, extricate yourselves. Now!” Sadly, there were no alternatives in the inbox. And I mean none. I’m sharing a pretty random selection of responses below, because they were actually all very similar. The key words were: “Stop,” “Enabling” and “Al-Anon,” and they were repeated over and over by about 35 different people:

Cut Your Losses: I know this might be hard to see written down, but you NEED to stop rescuing/enabling your friend. I get that you care for him, I really do, but he doesn’t even seem to be in a position where he can care for himself. And why does he need to? You’re always there to rescue him. Stop rescuing him and prioritize your needs. What (if anything) are you two getting out of this relationship? He doesn’t even seem to care about it enough to maintain anything. He’s burning the bridges of your relationships with other people (in-laws, etc.) and he doesn’t even have bridges left of his own. You gave him three months’ notice (good for you!) but you need to stick with it and give him the numbers of the local substance abuse treatment, community mental health center, and whatever other social supports might be in his area and let him know the door to your home is always open when he’s ready to walk through it. (And I would make that offer conditional on him being sober and actively job searching).
Elaine: Full stop. This person is an alcoholic. You are continuing to enable this behavior. You are not bailing this person out. You are actively preventing this person from learning that actions have consequences. This is codependent enabling. It makes you feel better in the moment but does NOTHING productive to help the raging alcoholic. No consequences. No pain for them. But pain for everyone associated. Let go. You are not letting him find his bottom. The longer this goes on, the deeper he will sink when he finally is cut off. If you really want to help him, go to an Al-Anon, CODA, or ACA meeting and learn about codependency, boundaries, enabling, and dysfunctional families. You are NOT HELPING HIM. You are enabling his destruction. Full stop. Signed: an alcoholic/drug addict 13 years sober and a 59-year-old daughter of an enabled abusive alcoholic.
Sage: The poster needs to go to some Al-Anon meetings for themself. Al-Anon helps families and loved ones of addicts learn how to cope with the addict. They have already gone above and beyond what most people would do and yet they still are expecting the addict to “do better.” Addiction is a DISEASE and addicts cannot always “do better” until ALL the people “helping” them learn that they are in fact NOT helping, but ENABLING the person to continue in their addiction. All that rescuing someone time after time after time does is make your bank account smaller and your frustration greater. They WILL have to CUT HIM OFF completely and go no contact. At some point, he will either come to grips with the truth of his addiction and SEEK HELP HIMSELF, or he will drink himself to death. I had to cut my own mother out of my life when her alcoholism endangered my children because she drove drunk with my kids in the car one time. It isn’t easy to watch someone you love continue in their addiction, and it is not helpful to continue to rescue them. Once he gets the message that his friends and family are not going to support his addiction anymore, he will probably fade away from that friend/family group and try to find others who will take on the task of footing his bills. He will find someone else to manipulate who feels sorry for him and will give him money or provide him with drink. At some point, they reach “rock bottom.” The thing is EVERY addict’s “rock bottom” is different. Nobody can know when any particular addict will hit that and decide that they must change or they will die that way. I am sorry to be so blunt and negative, but I have lived through this and there is no way to save them until he wants to save himself… Unfortunately, some addicts NEVER desire to save themselves and that is also something the LW needs to understand. Al-Anon will give them the tools and the knowledge to REMOVE themself from the equation or the ability to disengage to where the addict’s behavior no longer affects their life. It hurts. A LOT. But unless they stop, he is not going to change because what they are doing is enabling his addiction by being his rescuers. This is their portion of his illness. Until they disengage and stop providing help, they will be codependents in his addiction. Good luck.
Cori M.: This will sound harsh because it IS harsh: For the love of dog, STOP GIVING HIM MONEY. He will continue using it to buy booze. He doesn’t want to stop drinking. He doesn’t want a job. He doesn’t care about a roof over his head. He doesn’t seem to care about a friendship with you, other than your enabling his drinking. You say he’s your best friend, but what kind of friendship are you getting from him? Please go to Al-Anon. You do not need to set yourself on fire to keep someone else warm.
Sober LMFT: As a licensed mental health professional with 25 years of sobriety, these folks need to stop enabling their friend’s behavior. If they want to help their friend, going to Al-anon meetings is a good place to start so they can get support on how to set healthy boundaries. Yes, he is struggling, but giving him money and helping him find a job is not the help he needs. There is help available when he is ready to accept that help (AA meetings are one example). Sometimes the most loving thing we can do for an alcoholic is to let them “hit their bottom” and experience the consequences of their actions. Pain is a powerful teacher—don’t rob him of the opportunity to learn from it.
Sober Today By Grace Alone: I am so sorry you are on the sidelines of this train wreck. All your good intentions cannot save your friend from himself or detour him from the path of self-destruction he is on. Most recovering addicts and loved ones of addicts will recommend Al-Anon or its faith-based counterpart Celebrate Recovery. It works. Attending a meeting will be your next best first step. You will find others who made the same journey you are currently facing. If you are truly seeking advice, the next best step is to STOP. Stop helping. Stop providing support. Stop being disappointed in his choice to be an addict. In my personal experience, I only sought recovery when I “hit bottom” and had to face what my life had become because of my addiction. Every time you send him support, you are funding his drinking. You are not saving him. He is not accepting it as you intend it to be a way out. You are contributing to his demise. It is truly a horrible thing to watch someone in so much anguish, but he is the only one who can intercept the otherwise inevitable consequences. No one I have ever met in my 29 years, 6 months, and 3 days of sobriety has ever stopped drinking any other way.
Pat H: This is a difficult situation all around, no doubt about it. To be in the position that you are in can feel so helpless. What you are doing in the name of compassion is enabling your friend, and while it may feel productive to find resources, jobs, and shelter for him, you are not doing him any favors. No amount of begging, pleading, or wishing will help your friend. Only he can determine whether or not he is ready to accept help and work to make changes in his life. You don’t have to give up on him, you can assure him that you will continue to support him emotionally, but the money, the job searching, the arranging lodging should stop right away. Perhaps take some time to consider why you’re so invested in saving him and why you think it is your responsibility to do so. You can love someone and want the best for them without letting it consume you. And certainly, this is all far easier said than done. Hopefully, your friend finds his way to help, and you all find your way to healing.

Again, I was really hoping to offer you a less “tough love”-inspired way forward because I know you’re thinking: “What if we stop helping him and things get even worse and we have to watch him sink lower and lower?” I can only imagine how scary that is. But these messages from professionals, people who have been in your shoes, and people who have dealt with addiction themselves clarified something for me: Things are going to get worse and you’re going to watch your friend sink even if you do keep helping him. It’s hard to accept (and that’s why everyone urges you to attend some twelve-step meetings) but you actually, really and truly, cannot fix his life. So take some of the energy you’ve been putting toward that effort and redirect it to taking back your own. You deserve it.

The depths of Matthew Perry's addiction: 6 to 8 shots a day and $55K for a month of ketamine

LOS ANGELES — “Friends” actor Matthew Perry was experiencing an out-of-control ketamine addiction, injecting the drug six to eight times a day, before his accidental overdose death , prosecutors say.

Five people have been charged in connection with Perry’s death, including his personal assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, and one of those accused of providing the drug, Dr. Salvador Plasencia.

In court documents filed Thursday, federal prosecutors accuse Plasencia of telling a patient that Perry was “too far gone and spiraling in his addiction” the week before he died but that he still offered to sell Perry ketamine through Iwamasa anyway.

Perry had been undergoing ketamine infusion therapy to treat depression and anxiety , but it was not the supervised therapy doses that killed him. His last session was more than a week before his death.

Matthew Perry smiles as he poses for a photograph.

According to prosecutors, Perry had been seeking out unsupervised doses of the controlled substance and had developed an “out of control” dependence on it. Ketamine, an anesthetic with psychedelic properties, is a popular party drug that has recently been found to be a promising alternative treatment for some mental illnesses but carries serious medical risks.

Perry, 54, was found face down in the heated end of a pool at his Pacific Palisades home on Oct. 28. When he died, the levels of ketamine in his body were high — equivalent to the amount used for general anesthesia during surgery, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.

His assistant, Iwamasa, 59, pleaded guilty on Aug. 7 to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine causing a death and admitted having repeatedly injected Perry without medical training, according to prosecutors.

The court documents laying out Iwamasa’s plea agreement detail the depths of Perry’s addiction.

Iwamasa was accused of injecting Perry the day he died at 8:30 a.m. and again at 12:45 p.m. while Perry was watching a movie, the agreement said.

“Approximately 40 minutes later, Victim M.P. asked defendant to prepare the jacuzzi for Victim M.P. and told defendant, ‘shoot me up with a big one,’ referring to another shot of ketamine,” the document said.

After he injected Perry with the third shot in six hours, Iwamasa went to run errands, the documents say. He found Perry face down in the pool when he returned to the home, according to the plea agreement.

Iwamasa told authorities he began injecting Perry roughly a month before he died, after Perry was introduced to Plasencia around Sept. 30. He alleged that Plasencia sold Perry liquid ketamine, as well as ketamine lozenges, according to court documents.

Plasencia, 42, was arrested Thursday in Southern California and charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine. He pleaded not guilty in court Thursday afternoon. His lawyer did not respond to a request for comment.

Federal prosecutors said Plasencia taught Iwamasa how to administer the drug through intramuscular injection, even though Iwamasa had no medical experience or education.

Perry then instructed Iwamasa to stay in touch with Plasencia to buy more vials. The plea agreement recounts almost daily communications between Plasencia and Iwamasa to arrange more purchases in the next two weeks.

On Oct. 12, about two weeks before he died, Perry had a ketamine infusion with a doctor, but Plasencia was still contacted after the treatment for more, according to prosecutors. According to the plea agreement document, Plasencia agreed to meet at Perry’s home later that day and administered a “large dose of ketamine.”

Perry had a bad reaction to that dose, it said. His blood pressure spiked, his body began to “freeze up,” and he could not talk or move, prosecutors said. Plasencia left additional vials of ketamine for Perry at the house, despite Perry’s adverse reaction to it, prosecutors alleged.

According to prosecutors, the next day Perry instructed Iwamasa to obtain more ketamine from a different supplier, an acquaintance Iwamasa had previously gotten into contact with named Erik Fleming.

Fleming, 54, pleaded guilty on Aug. 8 to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine and one count of distribution of ketamine resulting in death.

Perry paid Plasencia — through his assistant — at least $55,000 for ketamine in the month before he died, Iwamasa’s plea agreement says. Fleming was paid about $12,000 for two deals, one of them just days before Perry died.

Another doctor was arrested Thursday and charged, and a third person has agreed to plead guilty in connection with Perry’s death.

Perry, who rose to fame on the beloved sitcom series “Friends,” was vocal about his addiction issues. He said in a 2022 interview on the “ Q with Tom Power ” podcast that he could not watch “Friends” because he could tell by his weight what substance he was abusing: alcohol, opiates or cocaine.

Perry wrote in his memoir that he “should be dead” after years of addiction and that his sobriety gave him purpose.

In 2013, Perry was given the Champion of Recovery award from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. The same year, he converted his Malibu residence into a sober-living home that operated for two years.

“I’ve said this for a long time: When I die, I don’t want ‘Friends’ to be the first thing that’s mentioned,” Perry said the year before he died . “I want [helping people] to be the first thing that’s mentioned. And I’m going to live the rest of my life proving that.”

She was last seen July 31. Her husband reported her missing Aug. 5. Where is Mamta Kafle?

Officials in northern Virginia are asking the public for help locating a mother who is thought to have disappeared in July under "involuntary circumstances," police said earlier this month.

Mamta Kafle, 28, was last seen July 31 in Manassas Park, Virginia, according to the City of Manassas Park Police Department. The department said her disappearance is thought to be involuntary because of the length of time she has been missing.

The city is part of the Washington D.C. metro area, located roughly 30 miles west of the nation's capital. As of the latest census Manassas Park's population consisted of just over 17,000 residents.

Manassas Park police reported the young mother has not had any contact with family or friends since she vanished.

Officers responded to Kafle's home on Aug. 2 after colleagues at Inova Fairfax Hospital raised concerns , Police Chief Mario Lugo told local outlet WUSA-TV. The woman's husband, Naresh Bhatt, reported her missing Aug. 5, per multiple local reports citing Lugo.

Her missing person's case was assigned to the department's Investigative Services Division, police said, and remained active Thursday morning.

"What we can share at this time is the following: the investigators have conducted several follow-ups with neighbors, friends, co-workers and the husband," police posted in an update on the agency's Facebook page.

USA TODAY has reached out to Kafle's family and her friend, Nadia Navarro, who created an online fundraiser to find her .

"We need help funding the search efforts," Navarro posted on a Facebook page created to spread word about the fundraiser. As of Thursday it had raised more than $5,000. "Any donation, no matter the size, could make a huge difference, and if you can't donate, sharing the link would mean the world to us."

Navarro, who also organized a gathering this week on the missing woman's behalf, told WJLA-TV it's not like Kafle to leave her 11-month-old daughter.

According to WRC-TV a crowd gathered earlier this week in support of Kafle and her husband spoke to the crowd by phone, saying he couldn't attend because he was caring for their daughter.

According to police, Kafle stands five feet tall, weighs 132 pounds and has black hair and dark brown eyes.

She was last seen wearing blue scrubs, police said.

What ails Indian research papers? Poor quality or just bad grammar? Premium

India comes third after china and the u.s. in the number of research papers published, but the rejection rate of indian papers is also high, not so much due to poor research but more so due to weak language and grammar.

K.M. Ajith’s first research paper, co-authored with his supervisor in 2005, was about mathematical physics they had worked out in quantum field theory. The U.K. journal to which the paper was submitted had no hesitation in accepting the quality of the research work, yet the review was quite scathing.

“The reviewer pointed out grammatical errors, including for punctuation marks. And asked us to re-write from scratch,” says Mr. Ajith, who is now a professor at the National Institute of Technology, Karnataka.

The authors may have known quantum mechanics but not how to write succinctly. They asked for help from friends who were also pursuing research but whose English was better. Part of the difficulty was in rewriting the technical terms. Yet they managed to avoid jargon as much as possible to make it to the journal.

Mr. Ajith studied in a Malayalam medium school, and his exposure to English was minimal at that time. Twenty years into research and publishing, Mr. Ajith now speaks about why budding researchers should be good writers too.

India comes third after China and the U.S. in the number of research papers published, says a paper titled, Academic Writing in India: A Research Scholar’s View . But in the same paper, the authors also say the rejection rate of Indian papers is high, not so much due to poor research but more so due to weak language and grammar.

In a 2019 public notice, UGC said that writing programmes should be organised in research institutions to overcome this skill deficiency.

Somadatta Karak, head of science communication and public outreach at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, says, despite the courses, Indian students struggle with writing. She is concerned about the intensity and reach of the writing workshops and frameworks.

“When I go to tier 2 cities and take workshops on science communication, students there have not even heard or thought about all of these,” says Ms. Karak.

According to Kanika Singh, who directs the writing program at Ashoka University, the higher education system in India has no separate emphasis on writing. “If writing is institutionalised as part of your curriculum and you write in different ways daily, then your science research thesis will become better,” says Ms. Singh.

Eldho Mathews, programme officer (Internationalisation of Higher Education), The Kerala State Higher Education Council, says even students who join top-tier research institutions are trained in a way that gives little importance to writing.

“At the level of screening [for admissions to research institutions], it is important to evaluate the level of language skills. By incorporating this factor into testing systems, the government and institutions can effectively motivate students to develop their writing skills early on,” he said.

Why writing should be taught as core skill

Asha Channakar, a researcher at the Institute for Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine (InStem), Bengaluru, had a similar experience like Mr. Ajith with her first paper. “The first time I wrote, it took a lot of time to understand how to write.”

Ms. Channakar says that when she started to write, she read a lot of papers, and tried to connect the writing and presentation with what she wanted to convey. This was while she was a project assistant at the National Brain Research Centre in 2019. Later, she took research writing classes at the National Centre for Biological Sciences as part of her PhD at InStem.

“They taught how to write a scientific manuscript, and there was also an assignment to write for the non-scientific community,” says Ms. Channakar. She has now grown to become the first author of a paper published recently at InStem.

Ranjana Sarma, who has a PhD in Biochemistry from Montana State University, says, “Our researchers struggle with the flow of ideas more than the language.”

Unlike Mr. Ajith and Ms. Channakar, Ms. Sarma got the benefit of the U.S. research ecosystem. When she first wrote a review paper, the feedback was, “Ranjana doesn’t know English.”

“Coming from India, this was a huge ego-crusher,” says Ms. Sarma, who consistently scored high in English back home.

In 2004, she was put into a course offered by Penn State University to learn not only writing but also how to present and peer review. In the U.S., she learned that writing should be simple and easy to read with short sentences. The writing classes Ms. Sarma took influenced her not only to write but also to think and how to pay attention to what she reads.

“Language does look like a challenge for most researchers, as they write in a heavy, academic style. Despite English being the language of science in India, most researchers find it difficult to express themselves in plain, simple English,” says Subhra Priyadarshini, Chief Editor of Global Supported Projects, Nature Portfolio.

Can AI help?

Of late, students use software like Grammarly to correct language and grammar. Although Mr. Ajith appreciates such software, he also says that the tools will not help students to do the critical thinking while writing. “Grammarly is not writing a paper for you; all it does is to check the grammar of what you have already written,” says Anannya Dasgupta, Associate Professor of literature and arts at Krea University, Andhra Pradesh.

Ms. Dasgupta, who is now the director of the Centre for Writing and Pedagogy at Krea University, started her writing stint as a course coordinator while pursuing her PhD at Rutgers University, the U.S. According to Ms. Dasgupta, to improve the quality of writing, more people should be trained to teach writing.

Teaching writing also involves teaching how to think through the questions and how to build an argument, says Pooja Sagar, who teaches the Writing for Research and Analysis at the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (I.I.H.S.), Bengaluru.

Can AI help? Almost all the established researchers said it could help to an extent. But at the level of research papers, a lot of critical thinking is required that AI can’t deliver. They also cautioned about AI providing false information.

Matthew perry death probe reveals new details of final hours: ‘shoot me up with a big one’.

Beloved “Friends” star Matthew Perry had apparently urged his assistant to “shoot me up with a big one” in the moments leading up to him overdosing on a deadly batch of ketamine last year, it has been revealed.

The timeline of Perry’s harrowing final hours was laid bare in court papers after his live-in assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, and four others were charged Thursday in connection with the Hollywood actor’s shocking death last October.

On the morning of his death, Perry, 54, is said to have asked the long-time assistant to administer the first ketamine shot of the day at about 8:30 a.m., according to the plea agreement Iwamasa went on to sign.

Matthew Perry had apparently urged his assistant to "shoot me up with a big one" in the moments leading up to him overdosing last year, court papers reveal.

Four hours later, Iwamasa injected another dose while the actor was watching a movie at his Pacific Palisades home, the filing said.

It was only about 40 minutes later that Perry asked for yet another ketamine shot, Iwamasa recalled, according to the court papers.

“Shoot me up with a big one,” the actor apparently told Iwamasa before instructing his assistant to prepare the hot tub.

After injecting his boss with the third dose in as little as six hours, Iwamasa set off to run errands, the documents say.

Iwamasa, who had worked for the actor since 1994, found Perry face down in the hot tub when he eventually returned to the home.

At the time of his death, Perry had been undergoing weeks of ketamine therapy for depression.

Here's what you need to know about the hallucinogenic ketamine

  • Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic, making patients feel detached from their pain and environment.
  • While leaving users feeling calm and immobile, ketamine has been abused recreationally as a “club drug” and to facilitate sexual assault.
  • Celebrity endorsements are one of the reasons for the increased amount of prescriptions for ketamine in recent years.
  • In 2019, the Food and Drug Administration approved Spravato , a nasal spray version of the narcotic, for treatment-resistant depression.
  • Actor Matthew Perry , before his tragic passing on Oct. 28, 2023, was undergoing “ketamine infusion therapy” for “depression and anxiety.”

Perry's live-in assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, and four others were charged Thursday in connection with the Hollywood actor's shock death last October.

His assistant told authorities he had administered at least 27 shots of ketamine to his boss during the final five days of his life alone — including the last three that prosecutors allege resulted in his “death and serious bodily injury.”

Iwamasa was charged alongside two doctors, Salvador Plasencia and Mark Chavez, as well as alleged street dealer Erik Fleming, and Jasveen Sangha, the so-called “Ketamine Queen of Los Angeles.”

From September until Perry’s Oct. 28 death, prosecutors allege, Plasencia and Chavez allegedly supplied the actor with about 20 vials of ketamine in exchange for around $55,000 in cash.

Iwamasa, who had no medical training, was injecting the drugs into Perry based on instructions from Plasencia, prosecutors said.

Authorities believe that Perry’s final, fatal dose of ketamine was supplied by Sangha.

Plasencia and Sangha are both charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine over Perry’s death.

Fleming, Iwamasa and Chavez all copped plea deals in exchange for pleading guilty to various charges, including conspiracy to distribute ketamine and conspiracy to distribute ketamine resulting in death.

Matthew Perry had apparently urged his assistant to "shoot me up with a big one" in the moments leading up to him overdosing last year, court papers reveal.

Want to See Coral Reefs Grow? Freeze Them.

An illustration of various colorful corals in translucent boxes.

By Carly D. Kenkel

Dr. Kenkel is a marine biologist who has been studying Caribbean coral reefs since 2006.

Since 2018, my lab has transplanted hundreds of coral specimens to reefs in Florida to study what makes them grow. We have albums of photos documenting their lives, starting from branches no bigger than your finger to beautiful treelike adults as big as beach balls.

In June 2023, as water temperatures in Florida skyrocketed, my team rushed to our field sites — and found extreme bleaching (the loss of color signaling that corals are starving) and death already underway. Throughout the Florida Keys, corals were disappearing in an ocean that had become too hot for them to survive. We left our experiment running to find out what would happen. By November, 98 percent of our corals were dead.

This severe bleaching was just the latest blow to reefs already battered by storms, disease and the loss of other animals. In the 18 years I’ve studied reefs in the Florida Keys and the Caribbean, coral populations have continued to decline such that they can no longer recover naturally; I worry that even those few survivors from our project won’t last another summer in which water temperatures soar past 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Caribbean reefs are now in such dire condition that lifelong coral biologists are considering calling them a total loss and trying to replace native coral with species imported from the Pacific Ocean. I have a different take. I believe we can still stave off the complete collapse of Caribbean reefs. But we must act quickly to bank living coral in aquariums and stockpile their eggs and sperm in cryostorage for future I.V.F. efforts. If we abandon them in an increasingly inhospitable ocean, we put them at risk of extinction.

The goal is to buy time while we wait for the world to slow, and hopefully, one day reverse climate change. Banking and freezing coral may sound extreme, but it’s necessary — many of the remaining wild corals represent unique genetic combinations. Lose too many and the rest could go extinct just by chance. If we can’t rescue them, we could face the extinction of an entire ecosystem.

Last summer, there wasn’t a roster of emergency workers to help evacuate corals , much less aquariums fully prepared to receive them. Organizations such as Mote Marine Laboratory and the Florida Aquarium swiftly mobilized what tanks and teams they could. Those teams worked themselves to the breaking point.
