Nayattu movie review

Nayattu.

Image Credit

Nayattu movie review: A near-perfect thriller cum socio-political drama cum police procedural cum escape flick

Language: Malayalam

Not a word, not a pause, not a glance, not a sigh feels out of place or unnecessary in Nayattu (The Hunt). Director Martin Prakkat’s new film is many genres packed into one: a police procedural, an escape flick, a suspense thriller and a socio-political commentary on today’s Kerala (or India, or the world, if you choose to see it that way). It did not seem possible that Malayalam cinema could throw up a gem to rival The Great Indian Kitchen this year, but it already has – Nayattu is it.

Written by Shahi Kabir and exquisitely edited by Mahesh Narayanan and Rajesh Rajendran, Nayattu begins with a burst of noise and colour, and ends in silence on a grey, dismal landscape. It takes over half an hour to get to an incident that sends its three protagonists on the run. Every moment thereafter holds an observation, a portent or an unexpected turn of events that keeps the story rolling unrelentingly yet quietly towards its climax.

The opening 30 minutes establish the characters and backgrounds of the police personnel KP Maniyan (Joju George), Sunitha Krishna (Nimisha Sajayan) and Praveen Michael (Kunchacko Boban). Two of them are Dalits. Maniyan is a veteran who dotes on his gifted daughter. Sunitha and her mother live together, and are battling a troublesome member of the extended family when the film opens. Praveen is a new joinee whose focus is his mother’s well-being.

A complaint by Sunitha against her rowdy relative leads to a fracas at a police station. This clash goes against the trio when they are later involved in a dramatic episode and find evidence piling up to suggest that they colluded in a crime. The facts could easily be found out, but the political situation in the state is such that reality matters less than perception, so the force is tasked to frame Maniyan, Sunitha and Praveen.

The brawl at the police station is the only passage in Nayattu that gave me pause. The aggressor in the case is an unlikeable Dalit youth (Jineesh Chandran) which, in and as of itself, is not a problem – the representation of marginalised communities in cinema should be about normalisation not deification, and characters ought to cover the gamut from good to bad. The problem here, however, is that without quite saying so, the chain of events appears to imply that social, political and media sensitivity towards Dalits gives Dalit hooligans an unfair advantage over law enforcers. When you view Nayattu in its entirety it becomes clear that this is not at all the overall point being made by the film, but still, the room for doubt that that scene leaves in passing is unacceptable considering how sections of the upper castes are always on the lookout for an excuse to play up exceptional instances as the norm and to claim victimhood at the hands of Dalit-protection laws and politics.

Nayattu is about how individual human beings are irrelevant in the face of political machinations, and how amoral politicians who claim to care about an oppressed social group use the community’s anguish to further their own selfish ends. If displaying concern for the marginalised calls for destroying scapegoats among them, so be it.

A sense of disillusionment and despair pervades Nayattu , but the open-ended finale also leaves space for hope if you wish to interpret it that way.

Early in Nayattu , Maniyan follows orders to set up an innocent man for a crime he did not commit. The matter-of-factness with which he goes about planting evidence is chilling, but he says bitterly: “Even goons have a choice to accept or reject quotations, we don’t have that freedom.” Soon, the system he once obeyed turns on him with the same callousness with which it once used him so casually.

Shahi Kabir, who earlier wrote the Joju George-starrer Joseph , has once against put his experience as a policeman to good use in Nayattu . His knowledge shines through Maniyan’s hopelessness and the investigation methods used by his colleagues, all of which are portrayed convincingly.

Unlike last year’s otherwise remarkable Anjaam Pathiraa , in which Unnimaya Prasad was cast as a token senior policewoman who ended up standing around helplessly and messing up her job while a man slayed the case, in Nayattu an officer called Anuradha is in charge of tracking down Maniyan, Sunitha and Praveen, and she actually does something. Anuradha is well-written as an efficient sleuth, and actor Yama Gilgamesh looks and acts her part superbly.

The supporting roles are all filled by well-chosen artistes including, in a rather long role, Anil Nedumangad who we lost so tragically last year.

The leads are in smashing form. Joju George gets the most colourful role among them but is not allowed to overshadow Nimisha Sajayan or Kunchacko Boban. At first, Nimisha’s Sunitha is shown to be less mentally tough than the men and it appeared that the film was headed down the path of writing the two men as protectors of this hapless woman, but thankfully it does not go there.

Perhaps unwittingly, the screenplay shows Maniyan, Sunitha and Praveen slipping into traditional gender-designated roles at one point when they are fugitives. That apart, Nayattu defies the tendency to normalise patriarchy in contemporary Malayalam cinema with small touches such as a man seen hanging up a woman’s intimate clothing on a washing line and a man wordlessly purchasing sanitary napkins for his female companion when he figures, without being told, that she is having her periods. Such consideration is not a common sight in Malayalam cinema.

The effortless beauty of Munnar captured by DoP Shyju Khalid in the second half of Nayattu mirrors the effortless beauty of the film. Nothing is strained or contrived in the script. The music (by Vishnu Vijay) and sound design (by Ajayan Adat) are spare and just right. And Prakkat, whose last film was the widely acclaimed, widely awarded, widely-watched Charlie (2015), patiently allows his ingredients to simmer without once marring his chosen pace or the narrative’s serene demeanour.

Nayattu is about a heartless system that unflinchingly devours the very people who sustain it. The synopsis on Netflix reads: “Three police officers become pawns for unscrupulous lawmakers when they are framed in an incident amid political elections and must flee to evade arrest.” It is that – yes. It is also quite indescribable.

Rating: 4 (out of 5 stars)

Nayattu is streaming on Netflix.

The Hunt (Nayattu) is a 2021 Indian political survival thriller film directed and co-produced by Martin Prakkat and written by Shahi Kabir. Kunchako Boban, Joju George, and Nimisha Sajayan play the key parts, with Jaffar Idukki, Anil Nedumangad, and Hakkim Shajahan appearing in supporting roles. The film is edited by Mahesh Narayanan and Rajesh Rajenndrran, and the cinematography is handled by Shyju Khalid. The original music and background score were written by Vishnu Vijay. The film was produced by Gold Coin Motion Picture Company in collaboration with Martin Prakkat Films and directed by Ranjith and P. M. Sasidharan.

The film was released on April 8, 2021, to tremendous critical acclaim for its direction and performances by the cast. In October, it was named to India's shortlist for Best International Film at the 94th Film Festival.

Following Midhun Manuel Thomas's footsteps, Nayattu discovers another filmmaker moving away from lighthearted entertainment and towards something more grounded, sarcastic, and cruel. Martin Prakkat has paired up with Shahi Kabir, the screenwriter whose debut effort, Joseph, was a major hit, following the success of Charlie. This time, Shahi has conjured up something more unsettling. Nayattu is a soul-stirring film whose ending will leave you unsettled.

Martin and Shahi don't waste time getting things started; when they do, they do an excellent job. The major conflict surrounds the death of a young Dalit guy, which is made more problematic by the circumstances leading up to it.

Three police officers, Maniyan (Joju George), Praveen Michael (Kunchacko Boban), and Sunitha (Nimisha Sajayan), are trapped in a position that causes them to flee. The hunters are transformed into the hunted.

Some will find these sections objectionable, but one cannot dismiss the argument completely. The fact that Maniyan and Sunitha are from the same community adds weight to the story. In the midst of all of this is Praveen, who comes into the job full of hope but must embrace the hard reality that hope has no place in a system looking for more individuals to corrupt. If it is unable to accomplish this, it just chews and spits them out, inflicting them with psychological anguish for the rest of their lives.

Kunchacko, Joju, and Nimisha all perform admirably as characters with a lot of emotional baggage.

Though the males set the events of Nayattu in motion, it is the women who left the most indelible effects. In various instances, we see female characters under varying degrees of stress.

Arundathi (an amazing Yama Gilgamesh) is a senior female officer who takes a stealth smoke break before providing directions to her troops. Sunitha has a nervous breakdown after witnessing two men fight. Sunitha's mother, on the other hand, must assist cops in their pursuit of the three, and the school-age daughter of a male cop must live the rest of her life with a tragic story. The most revealing image in the film, though, is of a visually handicapped woman voting.

There is also pressure, but it is of a different nature. We need to find out who she wanted to vote for or if her son pressed the right button. The scenario comes at the proper time and says a lot.

Nayattu's intense cynicism reminded me of the films of Italian filmmaker Francesco Rosi, who made similarly dark political thrillers during his period. In its last minutes, Nayattu achieves a similar effect by conveying the futility of resisting injustice and darkness in the world. Although the image of powerless characters is not pleasant, it makes for strong cinema.

“Remake” is a professional way of lifting a story.

While the Malayalam industry is replete with excellent storylines that are culturally rooted, pressing issues of society, government and law and order, Tollywood is lost in the labyrinth of commercialised cinema with outdated stories, frivolous larger-than-life characters, item numbers and boring monologues.

Every time a Telugu filmmaker comes with a remake, it is always the story that gets rehashed so much that it is bruised and lost its organic content in the name sensibilities of Telugu people.

Kotabommali PS , a remake of the Malayalam movie Nayattu (2019), is a vain attempt to sell content not indigenous to the region.

Kotabommali PS is a thriller

‘Kotabommali PS’ is a thriller. (X)

Ramakrishna (Srikanth Meka) is a successful senior policeman with 20 years of service in thwarting the Naxal movement in the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha border.

Ravi (Rahul Vijay) and Kumari (Shivani Rajasekhar), newly recruited constables, develop an admiration for Ramakrishna during his stint at Kotabommali police station.

One day, on their way back home after attending a marriage reception, their vehicle veers off and hits a party worker of the ruling government. The victim dies on arrival at the hospital.

The man at the wheel, Ramakrishna’s nephew, escapes from the crime scene. Ramakrishna and Ravi, who are in an inebriated condition, have no option left but to escape from being caught. The woman deputy, Kumari’s fate, too, hangs in the balance.

Meanwhile, incumbent politician and home minister Jayaraj (Murali Sharma) takes the by-election in his constituency quite seriously.

As pressure mounts on the police from political circles, the department launches a massive hunt to nab the three culprits.

How the story in this cat-and-mouse game is the crux.

Kotabommali PS serves nothing new from the original work Nayattu .

To say the least, the makers have diluted the script even more. However, the theme has been retained for the most part.

The story gives a realistic picture of power politics and how political netas influence the government machinery to get their work done.

The pacy first half has the whole department running after to catch three sincere cops. This Telugu remake is more or less the original work of Nayattu .

The screenplay structure is all the same but set against the backdrop of different regions.

Kotabommali PS is a tailor fit for Telugu audiences with commercial cinematic tropes.

Director Teja Marni does a reasonably good job of packaging the story and giving it a native tinge. The influence of caste and vote bank politics has been explored very neatly.

Political monologues referring to the Jana Sena Party chief (Pawan Kalyan) might give a high to those who admire him as a public and political figure.

However, there are a few loose ends in the penultimate chase to nab Ramakrishna and his deputies.

The sequence where senior cop Varalaxmi Sarathkumar hunts down the culprits in the Naxal hotbed has been shot brilliantly.

Performances.

Srikanth Meka has delivered a scintillating performance as a senior police constable. His body language and mannerisms are commendable.

Rahul Vijay, as a young recruit in the department, is impressive.

Shivani does justice to the role of a junior police officer, though she has less bite in terms of performance.

The background score composed by Ranjin Raj and Midhun Mukundan is decent enough for a remake, but you can sense a slight void in terms of bringing originality to the film.

The cinematography is good. The picturesque locations of North Andhra are captured well.

Related: I smoked a cigarette for the first time in ‘Kotabommali PS’, says Varalaxmi Sarathkumar

Kotabommali PS is not entirely a complete adaptation of the original. It has its flaws. But the story relies on the performances of Srikanth and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, the cops-chase-cops mind game, and the thrilling climax.

In all, it is worth watching.

In February, Dhanush's brother Selvaraghavan revealed that while he did not write the script for "Raayan," he plays a significant role in the movie. The cast features Dhanush as Raayan "Raaya," S. J. Suryah, Prakash Raj, Sundeep Kishan and Kalidas Jayaram as Raayan's brothers, Dushara Vijayan as Raayan's sister, and Selvaraghavan. Also notable are performances by Imman Annachi, Aparna Balamurali, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Saravanan, Aranthangi Nisha, Anikha Surendran, and Ramachandran Durairaj. This stellar ensemble is expected to deliver compelling performances, generating high anticipation for the film.

Shariza Othman Loves Tamil Movies So Much That She Reviews Them In Malay

The first Tamil movie she watched was 'Maanasthan' in 2004.

Meet Shariza Othman, a big fan of Tamil movies. She has amassed over 26,000 ardent followers on her Facebook page, where she writes movie reviews in Malay

Speaking to SAYS, the 43-year-old believes that movies are the best medium for artists to convey messages to society because people are more easily entertained through visuals compared to books or novels.

"Through movies, viewers can learn the language, customs, and culture of a community. Movies also allow viewers to take lessons from the issues depicted in their daily lives," she explained.

"Moreover, through movies, filmmakers honestly reveal the flaws in the administration, police institutions, and their courts. Their noble efforts are greatly appreciated by society," she added.

Shariza first fell in love with South Indian cinema, specifically Tamil movies, after graduating from university in 2004

During that time, while looking for a job, she spent her day watching Tamil movies aired on RTM's channels. Before that, she enjoyed Bollywood movies.

"I transitioned to South Indian movies because I saw that Tamil movies tend to focus on family themes and depict the real life of the community," she said.

She also appreciated the popular comedy elements in movies of that era.

The first Tamil movie that Shariza watched was Maanasthan , which R. Sarathkumar starred. But it was comedian Vadivelu who left an indelible mark on her

As she continued watching more Tamil movies, she started writing synopses to help friends decide if a movie was worth watching.

Over the years, Shariza noted that South Indian movies have gradually evolved with better cinematography techniques, quality acting, and improved scriptwriting with more surprises. Much of it is largely due to critics who pushed filmmakers to experiment with newer works and styles.

The first Tamil movie that Shariza watched was 'Maanasthan', which starred comedian Vadivelu (left) and R. Sarathkumar.

Shariza said she is happy to see Tamil movies still uphold good moral values. She is also glad to see the South Indian film industry advancing to the point it now rivals Hollywood

At home, while noting the advancement in Malaysian cinema, Shariza feels local filmmakers can take a leaf from South Indian movies.

"Malaysian filmmakers should learn from the creative techniques of South Indian writers, who don't just tell love stories and family feuds but also present many creative plots, especially in crime and thriller genres," she said.

Shariza hopes that the Malaysian film industry becomes more open and creative without touching on racial and religious issues.
