PhD in Practice Programm 2022

Deadline: Montag, 28.02.2022, 23:59 Uhr

The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna invites applications to its doctoral program for research in artistic practice. The “PhD-in-Practice” program provides participants with the opportunity to pursue their individual arts-based research projects in a collective learning environment with a decidedly transdisciplinary and international bent. The program is coordinated by Renate Lorenz (Professor for Art and Research) and Anette Baldauf (Professor for Methodology and Epistemology). The invited lecturers include Saidiya Hartman, Okwui Okpokwasili, Tina Campt, Eve Tuck, Otobong Nkanga, Fred Moten, Stefano Harney, Sharon Hayes, Nikita Dhawan, and Kapwani Kiwanga.

The Program

The PhD in Practice program is built on a concept of arts-based research that relates to critical epistemologies, as they have been developed in the context of feminist, queer, postcolonial, ecological, postmarxist and other political and emancipatory projects. Inspired by these struggles, the PhD in Practice program approaches arts-based research as a space for the negotiation of social, political, cultural and economic conflicts. It refers to a history of research in the arts that has been developed in dialog with an array of different fields, including academia, activism, high art as much as pop and subculture. It thus privileges cultural/artistic productions that are concerned with a critique of injustice, social hierarchies and exclusions, and it is interested in the development of heterotopic visions as well as activist interventions.

The PhD in Practice program is designed for a duration of four years of study. During this time the participants will develop their projects artistically, theoretically, and analytically in coordination with the academic and artistic team of co-participants and faculty. Participants conceive, organize, document, as well as carry out independent and/or collaborative arts-based research in a PhD supervision environment that is dedicated to transdisciplinary and international exchange.

Course work is organized around so-called focus weeks, which take place one week per month during the academic calendar (October to January, March to June). During these weeks the participants and the PhD in Practice team meet for tutorials, seminars, lectures, workshops, excursions and other research and study events. The PhD in Practice participants have access to the facilities and resources of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and to the institutions and people that form the broader and expanding network of the Academy. Moreover, participants are expected to take an active part in organizing the program, including the conceptualization and organization of workshops, guest lectures, conferences, exhibitions, screenings, etc.

Available positions

  • Two doctoral PhD positions are available with a 75% employment contract with a duration of four years (payment according to B 1, § 49 Abs. 3 KV, currently 2.293,952 €/month before tax, incl. health benefits). These positions require residency in Vienna.
  • Additionally, candidates can apply for a PhD position without funding (student-only, low residency scheme, which does not require moving to Vienna).

The PhD in Practice Program especially encourages Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPoC), people who identify themselves as trans, gender diverse and/or LGBTQIA*, and/or individuals of other underrepresented groups to apply.

PhD in Practice, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna

Academy of fine arts vienna.

phd in practice academy of fine arts

Schillerplatz 3 1010 Vienna www.akbild.ac.at

The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna is offering a doctoral program for research in and as artistic practice. The PhD in Practice is intended to give participants an opportunity to realize their individual art and research projects in a cooperative environment with a decidedly trans-disciplinary and international bent.

In societies increasingly based on economies of “knowledge”, it is crucial for contemporary visual artists to discuss and transform their own respective positions as producers, agents, designers, archivists, and conveyors of those economies, and the politics, aesthetics and affects related to them. The program especially engages in debates around artistic practices, which are informed by critical epistemologies as they have been developed in recent times by feminist theories, gender and queer studies, postmarxist theories, postcolonial theories, and black and subaltern studies, among others. At the same time it critically focuses on the consequences of the shifting social role of art and artists by allowing artists to engage in research into these issues. A deliberate emphasis on the epistemological and methodological foundations and prospects of the fine arts, its practitioners, and its audiences is a distinguishing feature of the PhD in Practice program, as is a particular interest in addressing the question of how art practices are and can be related to important issues of contemporary politics and culture.

The PhD in Practice program is designed for a four year duration (240 ECTS credits). Participants should be prepared to take part in seminars and communal meetings in Vienna for at least one week per month during the semester. Over the course of the four years the participants will develop and implement their projects analytically and experimentally in coordination with the academic and artistic team of co-participants and faculty. Trans-disciplinary modes of art production and research are fostered. An annual thematic research focus provides a common platform of discussion and organization. Importantly, the ability to write academic texts, and to conceive, organize, document, and carry out independent research will be developed by supporting participants in a networked, international and trans-disciplinary environment (The Center for Art/Knowledge/CAK).

The PhD in Practice participants have access to the facilities and resources of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and to the institutions and people that form the broader and expanding network of the Center for Art/Knowledge and the future Doctoral School of the Academy. Participants will be given the means to pursue and develop dissertation work resulting in an artistic project and a written component displaying a strong emphasis on methodological reflexivity and documentation. Moreover, participants are expected to take an active part in organizing the program (coordinating workshops, guest lectures, conferences, exhibitions, screenings, etc.).

Entry requirements

Requirements for admission to the PhD in Practice program are: a degree (Magister, MA or diploma) from a recognized University or Academy, and the submission of a portfolio and a written project proposal. Applicants who are already engaged in an artistic or academic career are encouraged to apply.

The application is online only. Applications (to be written in English) must be received by March 18, 2011, following the online application procedure explained on the website of the program blogs.akbild.ac.at/phdinpractice .

Further information can be found at blogs.akbild.ac.at/phdinpractice .

The results of the application process will be published by mid-May 2012.

Admitted candidates will embark on the PhD in Practice program in October 2012.

Guided by the needs of society, GAFA is highly integrated with national and international trends in technology, industry and humanities of common concern, bridging professional barriers, optimizing the teaching structure, establishing a close industry-university-research mechanism, and building “GAFA Innovation Platform for Art and Science Integration”, which covers contents, institutions and personnel for design education. We aim to gather academic and industrial elites, break disciplinary boundaries, and focus on social and economic hot issues, thereby integrating talent training, scientific research, artistic creations and social services.

International Role

GAFA has forged close ties with more than 50 fine arts colleges from countries and regions around the globe, including the Great Britain, France, Russia, Canada, the United States, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and Taiwan of China. Its sister universities include the Glasgow School of Art, I.E. Repin St.-Petersburg State Academic Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, V.I. Surikov Moscow State Academic Art Institute, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp of Belgium, Zurich University of the Arts, L’École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs – Paris, University of Toronto, Chiba University, Tokyo University of the Arts, National Taipei University of the Arts. It has been a common practice for GAFA to arrange for excellent teachers and students to study, exchange or conduct academic research in other countries or regions, set up exchange programs and cooperative training programs with overseas sister universities, launch international workshops and lectures, high-level art and design exhibitions, and high-level international academic seminars, and invite renowned overseas experts and scholars to hold lectures and academic conferences. GAFA also vigorously promotes education for international students, advances cooperation in running schools with high-level international universities in an orderly fashion, and actively expands the opening of higher education to the outside world to enhance the internationalization of its education programs. Based on its academic and disciplinary advantages, GAFA plays an active role in the cultural exchange programs between China and other countries. By presenting its academic research achievements and the excellent works of its faculty members and students to the outside world, GAFA is dedicated to telling China story well and having the country’s voice heard.

National Role

As the only institution of higher art in Guangdong Province and even in South China, GAFA is determined to develop high-caliber talents and boost academic research and artistic creation at a higher starting point through new initiatives. To make this happen, it will leverage the strengths of Guangdong Province as the pioneer, pilot and experimental field of the reform and opening up policy and those of the Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) in historical, geographical, economic, cultural and intellectual resources. In this way, GAFA will better serve social development in the new era, play an active role in implementing national strategies like GBA development and work towards a more promising future driven by the country’s Belt and Road” initiative.

Following the principle of “integrating art with science, science with education, and industry with education”, it proactively serves regional economic and cultural development. In recent years, GAFA has undertaken more than 600 creation and design projects from governments, enterprises and public institutions, creating a significant number of impressive artworks, including Shenzhen’s city sculpture Pioneering Bull, Zhuhai’s city sculpture Zhuhai Fisherwoman, the statue of Mao Zedong in Youth on the Orange Island in Changsha, the design of Guangdong Provincial Government’s gifts in the commemoration of Hong Kong and Macao’s return to the motherland, the design and engineering of the Guangdong Hall of the Great Hall of the People, the PLA Naval Museum, China Pavilion of World Expo in Japan, as well as the Urbanian Pavilion and Shanxi Pavilion of World Expo Shanghai, Maritime Silk Road Museum, China Ceramics and Glass Museum, the Changjiang Civilization Museum, etc.; and the design of Bing Dwen Dwen, the mascot of the 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games, and city logo of Guangzhou. All these efforts have rendered strong support for cultural communication and industrial transformation and upgrading of the region and beyond. Collaborating with partner universities or associations, GAFA has held a series of academic conferences and exhibitions to promote communications. Also, we held design competitions by collaborating with industries such as XPeng Motors and Vivo. We have been actively carrying out "curriculum cooperation", "project cooperation", "graduation design cooperation" and other diversified and comprehensive industry-academia-research cooperation with well-known domestic and foreign enterprises such as Tencent, GAC, Honda, and Toyota. We have trained a large number of excellent designers and provided intellectual support for the development of Chinese brands and industry.

For a long time, design education in GAFA has built the earliest innovative model of industry-academia-research teaching in Chinese art colleges and universities by linking classrooms, enterprises and society through project-based teaching on the basis of the industrial advantages of Guangdong Province and the location advantages of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

For graduate students and postgraduate students, we focus on developing the following knowledge, abilities and qualities: 1. Basic knowledge  2. Professional knowledge 3. Cognitive ability 4. Creative ability 5. Communication and collaboration ability
