In essence, presentations are versatile tools with multifaceted purposes. They are not just about delivering information but about connecting, persuading, educating, and inspiring. Understanding the specific purpose of your presentation is the first step toward creating a compelling communication experience for your audience.

Why is it important to have good presentation skills for students?

Imagine this scenario: You’re sitting in a classroom, and your professor asks you to present your research findings. Your heart races, your palms sweat, and the butterflies in your stomach have a party of their own. Sound familiar? Well, that’s where good presentation skills come into play for students, and they’re more than just a ticket to survive the classroom spotlight. They’re a gateway to personal and professional success.

First and foremost, presentation skills are the ultimate communication tool.

They help students articulate their thoughts, ideas, and findings with clarity and confidence. In an academic setting, this means you can engage your peers and professors effectively, making your voice heard and your ideas stand out.

But it doesn’t stop at the classroom door. These skills are your secret (because not everyone knows this) key in the professional world. Picture yourself in a job interview. Your potential employer asks you to discuss your qualifications and why you’re the right fit for the role. With polished presentation skills, you’re not just answering questions; you’re painting a vivid picture of your capabilities and potential.

Furthermore, good presentation skills are a confidence booster.

They transform nervous jitters into a sense of empowerment. When you can stand before an audience and convey your message convincingly, it’s a feeling like no other. This newfound confidence seeps into other aspects of your academic and professional life, making you a more resilient and adaptable individual.

In essence, good presentation skills are the key to unlocking doors of opportunity. Whether you’re excelling in class discussions, wowing your professors with a well-structured thesis defense, or nailing that crucial client pitch, these skills are your trusty companions on the journey of personal and professional growth.

So, the next time you find yourself in the spotlight, remember that presentation skills aren’t just about public speaking; they’re about showcasing your potential, building confidence, and paving the way for success. Embrace them, and watch your academic and professional horizons expand like never before.

Whether your campus is small, tall, grande , or venti , you are probably amazed by the array of institutionally supported student activities available for your enrichment and enjoyment. Perhaps your biggest challenge is deciding how much extra time you have after studying and which added activities yield the greatest reward.

Below are two videos that give a sample of campus life at two different types of colleges. The first is from a large state institution—the University of Maryland. The second is from a smaller, private college—Baldwin Wallace University. Regardless, though, of where your institution fits on the spectrum of size, or how many activities, clubs, and organizations your institution offers, it’s very important for you to be able to explore cocurricular interests—for learning, enjoyment, and personal satisfaction. Student life should always be satisfying and rewarding to students, as well as to alumni, faculty, staff, and community members. Together, these groups are an institution’s lifeblood.

Organized Groups on Campus

Student organizations.

Colleges have an abundance of student organizations. Some examples you may be familiar with are the Hillel Student Organization for enriching the lives of Jewish students, the Chess Club, and Model United Nations. Larger institutions may have hundreds of such organizations. Here is a lengthy and exciting list of student organizations at the University of Maryland Baltimore County .

Generally, an organization is created and run by current students, and it’s sponsored by an executive officer, dean, or director of a major academic or operational unit. An organization must also have a mission that’s consistent with the mission of the college and sponsor. It might also collect dues from members, but in many cases, membership is free.

To link up with a student organization, you may not need to do much more than take stock of your interests. What do you love to do? In a later section, you’ll find a list of ways to learn about student organizations at your institution. If you find that your college doesn’t have an organization that speaks to your particular interests, you might consider starting one.

Fraternities and Sororities

Fraternities and sororities are social organizations at colleges and universities. The terms “Greek letter organization” (“GLO”) and “Greek life” are often used to describe fraternities and sororities. Generally, you obtain membership while you are an undergraduate, but your membership continues for life. Most Greek organizations have five shared elements: secrecy, single-sex membership, rushing and pledging to select new members, occupancy in a shared residence, and identification with Greek letters. Fraternities and sororities also engage in philanthropic activities, and they often host parties and other events that may be popular across campus.

Diversity and Multiculturalism

Diversity and multiculturalism are indeed critical pursuits not just on college campuses but in communities, businesses, and organizations around the world. If you are interested in expanding and promoting awareness of this issues on campus and further afield, you can seek opportunities at your college for starters. You will likely find informal gatherings, presentations, campus-wide events, individual students and classes focused on creating diverse, multicultural, and inclusive communities. As an example, here is a list of student clubs relating to culture and diversity at Goucher College .

Civic Engagement and Leadership

Most colleges have many opportunities for you to learn about and prepare for civic engagement and leadership on campus and in the wider community. What is civic engagement? It’s your involvement in protecting and promoting a diverse and democratic society—and clearly, leadership is an important part of this. Student organizations and activities related to these pursuits may be student government associations, leadership courses and retreats, social change projects, service opportunities, social innovation initiatives, and many others.

Service and Volunteerism

If you are like many new college students, you probably already have experience volunteering. It may have been part of your high school requirements. Or perhaps you engaged in volunteering as part of a faith organization or as part of a community fundraising effort. Any of your volunteering can continue in college, too, as your institution will have many special and meaningful ways to stay involved, work on social problems, and contribute to a better world. Service and volunteer efforts may include philanthropy, activism, social entrepreneurship, advocacy, and direct service. [1]

Student Activities

On any college campus, satellite center, or virtual space, students may be involved in activities around the clock on any given day. These activities may include student organization activities as well as special presentations, meetings, performing arts events, sporting events, intramurals, recreational activities, local community activities, holiday events, commemorative events, and so on.

You are heartily encouraged to pursue any interests that enhance your education and enrich your student experience. Your participation can expand your horizons, deepen your interests, and connect you with new people.

Resources for Learning About Campus Organizations

It can seem overwhelming to learn about all the activities, events, clubs, organizations, athletics, performing arts, etc. on campus. Sometimes you may need to dig a little, too. The following resources are a good place to start:

  • Your institution’s Web site : Try a keywords search at your college’s Web site, using any of the following:  student life , college life, student organizations, clubs, student activities office, student services, special events, events calendar, performing arts calendar, athletics calendar , etc.
  • Email : Keep alert to the many email messages you receive from campus offices and organizations. They publicize all kinds of activities and opportunities for you to engage with campus and student life.
  • Other technology-based support services : Take advantage of other technology-based student support services if they are available. For example, some colleges use an online platform that connects student organizations and allows them to reach out to prospective new members. With this service, you could access a list of student organizations to see which ones you might like to join and see what events are ahead. You can also can search for organizations based on categories or interests.
  • Social media : Most institutions keep up-to-date information on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and more. Individual groups on campus may also have separate social media presences that you can locate through the institution’s offerings.
  • Bulletin boards : Take a look at bulletin boards as you pass through hallways in academic buildings, dining halls, sports facilities, dormitories, even local service centers, and retail stores. You can often find fliers with event details and contact information.
  • Friends : Keep a pulse on what others are doing in their spare time. This is also a good way to make new friends and align yourself with others who have similar interests.
  • Campus offices for social functions : Make a point to visit the student activities office or the student affairs office. Both often have physical spaces for student organizations.
  • Campus offices for academic functions : Inquire with your academic adviser. He or she will likely be knowledgeable about campus organizations related to your interests and may know about local, regional and national organizations, too.

Activity: Campus and Community Activities

This project involves attending two campus and/or community culture activities (not athletic events), collecting mementos from each event, and displaying evidence of your experience via social media.

  • Attend campus activities/events to heighten a sense of connection with your institution
  • Use social media to display artifacts from these events
  • Choose two activities to attend (athletic events not included).
  • Collect mementos (such as a ticket stub, a program, take pictures and/or video).
  • Digitally archive them (for example, take a digital picture of the ticket stub).
  • what, when, and where the activity occurred
  • why you chose the activity
  • uploads of the related mementos
  • what you learned from the experience
  • Follow your instructor’s directions for submitting this activity.

Benefits of Participating in Student Life

How is it that becoming fully involved in student life can have such a positive impact on student satisfaction and academic success?

The National Survey of Student Engagement —a survey measuring student involvement in academic and cocurricular activities—shows that student success is directly linked to student involvement in the institution. In fact, survey results show that the higher the level of student involvement is, the higher student grades are and the more likely students are to reenroll the next semester. All of this seems to translate to satisfaction. The following lists some of the many benefits and rewards that result from active participation in campus and student life.

  • Personal interests are tapped : Cocurricular programs and activities encourage students to explore personal interests and passions. As students pursue these interests, they learn more about their strengths and possible career paths. These discoveries can be lasting and life-changing.
  • A portfolio of experience develops : Experience with just about any aspect of college life may be relevant to a prospective employer. Is freshman year too soon to be thinking about résumés? Definitely not! If you gain leadership experience in a club, for example, be sure to document what you did so you can refer back to it (you might want to keep track of your activities and experiences in a journal, for instance).
  • Fun leads to good feelings : Students typically pursue cocurricular activities because the activities are enjoyable and personally rewarding. Having fun is also a good way to balance the stress of meeting academic deadlines and studying intensely.
  • Social connections grow : When students are involved in cocurricular activities, they usually interact with others, which means meeting new people, developing social skills, and being a part of a community. It’s always good to have friends who share your interests and to develop these relationships over time.
  • Awareness of diversity expands : The multicultural nature of American society is increasingly reflected and celebrated on college campuses today. You will see this not only in the classroom but also in the cocurricular activities, clubs, organizations, and events. For example, your college might have a Black Student Union, an Asian Pacific Student Union, a Japanese Student Association, a Chinese Student Association, and many others. Having access to these resources gives students the opportunity to explore different cultures and prepare to live, work, and thrive in a vibrantly diverse world.
  • Self-esteem grows : When students pursue their special interests through cocurricular activities, it can be a real boost to self-esteem. Academic achievement can certainly be a source of affirmation and satisfaction, but it’s nice to have additional activities that validate your special contributions in other ways.

All in all, being involved in the campus community is vital to every student, and it’s vital to the college, too. It’s a symbiotic relationship that serves everyone well.

The key to getting the most out of college is to take advantage of as many facets of student life as possible while still keeping up with your academic commitments. That’s pretty obvious, right? What may be less obvious is that focusing exclusively on your academic work and not getting involved in any of the rich and diverse cocurricular activities on campus can come at a real price and even hamper your success.

Presentation-Tips-For-Students---Show-And-Tell-Like-A-Pro

Giving a presentation to fellow classmates can be a bit daunting, especially if you are new to oral and visual presenting. But with the right PowerPoint tips, public speaking skills, and plenty of practice, you can present like a pro at your upcoming presentation. Here, we’ve laid out the best college presentation tips for students. And once you have one successful presentation, you’ll get better each time!

The Best Presentation Tips for Students

1. arrive early and be technically prepared.

Get to the room early and make sure you leave plenty of time for technical set up and technical difficulties. Have several backup drives (including an online version if possible) so that you are prepared for anything!

2. Know More

Be educated on more than just what you are sharing. That way, you can add points, speak candidly and confidently, and be prepared to answer any audience or teacher questions.

3. Share Your Passion With Your Audience

Connect with your audience by showing that you are passionate about your topic. Do this with the right tone, eye contact, and enthusiasm in your speech.

4. pace yourself.

When student presenters are nervous, they tend to speed up their speech. This can be a problem, however, because your speed may be distracting, hard to understand, and you may run under your time.

5. Rehearse Thoroughly

Don’t just practice, rehearse your college presentation. Rehearse the entire delivery, including standing up, using gestures, and going through the slides.

6. Show Your Personality

You don’t need to be professional to the point of stiffness during your college presentation . Don’t be afraid to show your personality while presenting. It will make your presentation more interesting, and you will seem more approachable and confident.

7. Improvise

You can’t be 100% certain what will happen during your presentation. If things aren’t exactly as you expected, don’t be afraid to improvise and run off script.

8. Pump Yourself Up

Get yourself excited and full of energy before your college presentation! Your mood sets the tone for your presentation, and if you get excited right before, you will likely carry that throughout and you’ll make your audience excited about your topic as well.

9. Remember To Pause

Pausing not only only prevents filler words and helps you recollect your thoughts, it can also be a powerful indicator of importance within your presentation.

10. Create “Um” Alternatives

Try hard not to use filler words as they make you look unprofessional and uncertain. The best alternatives to “um” “like” and “so” are taking a breath or a silent pause to collect your thoughts.

11. Using Your Hands

Using your hands makes your college presentation more interesting and helps to get your points across. Point at the slide, use common hand gestures, or mimic a motion.

12. Eye Contact

Eye contact is one of the most important presentation tips for students . Many students are nervous, so they look at their notes or their feet. It is important that you show your confidence and engage your audience by making eye contact. The more presentations you give, the more eye contact will feel natural.

13. The Right Tone

The best public speakers vary their tone and pitch throughout their presentation. Try to change it up, and choose the right tone for your message.

Preparing an Effective College Presentation

1. open strong.

Grab your fellow students’ attention by starting strong with a powerful quote, intriguing scenario, or prompt for internal dialogue.

2. Start With A Mind Map

Mind mapping is literally creating a map of the contents of your college presentation. It is a visual representation and flow of your topics and can help you see the big picture, along with smaller details.

3. edit yourself.

Some students make the mistake of including too much information in their college presentations. Instead of putting all of the information in there, choose the most important or relevant points, and elaborate on the spot if you feel it’s necessary.

4. Tell A Story

People love stories — they capture interest in ways that figures and facts cannot. Make your presentation relatable by including a story, or presenting in a story format.

5. The Power Of Humor

Using humor in your college presentation is one of the best presentation tips for students. Laughter will relax both you and the audience, and make your presentation more interesting

PowerPoint Tips for Students

1. use key phrases.

Choose a few key phrases that remain throughout your PowerPoint presentation. These should be phrases that really illustrate your point, and items that your audience will remember afterwards.

2. Limit Number Of Slides

Having too many slides will cause you to feel you need to rush through them to finish on time. Instead, include key points on a slide and take the time to talk about them. Try to think about including one slide per one minute of speech.

3. Plan Slide Layouts

Take some time to plan out how information will be displayed on your PowerPoint. Titles should be at the top, and bullets underneath. You may want to add title slides if you are changing to a new topic.

4. the right fonts.

Choose an easy-to-read font that isn’t stylized. Sans serif fonts tend to be easier to read when they are large. Try to stick to only two different fonts as well to keep the presentation clean.

5. Choosing Colors And Images

When it comes to colors, use contrasting ones: light on dark or dark on light. Try to choose a few main colors to use throughout the presentation. Choose quality images, and make sure to provide the source for the images.

6. Use Beautiful Visual Aids

Keep your presentation interesting and your audience awake by adding visual aids to your PowerPoint. Add captivating photos, data representations, or infographics to illustrate your information.

7. Don’t Read Straight From Your Notes

When you read straight from your notes, your tone tends to remain monotonous, you don’t leave much room for eye contact. Try looking up often, or memorizing portions of your presentation.

8. Avoid Too Much Text

PowerPoint was made for images and bullets, not for your entire speech to be written in paragraph form. Too much text can lose your adiences’ interest and understanding.

9. Try A Theme

Choosing the right theme is one of those presentation tips for students that is often overlooked. When you find the right theme, you keep your college presentation looking interesting, professional, and relevant.

10. Be Careful With Transitions And Animations

Animations and transitions can add a lot to your presentation, but don’t add to many or it will end up being distracting.

Public Speaking Tips for Students

1. choose your topic wisely.

If you are able to pick your topic, try to pick something that interests you and something that you want to learn about. Your interest will come through your speech.

2. Visit The Room Beforehand

If your presentation is being held somewhere outside of class, try to visit the location beforehand to prep your mind and calm your nerves.

3. Practice Makes Perfect

Practice, practice, practice! The only way you will feel fully confident is by practicing many times, both on your own and in front of others.

4. talk to someone about anxiety.

If you feel anxious about your college presentation, tell someone. It could be a friend, family member, your teacher, or a counselor. They will be able to help you with some strategies that will work best for you.

5. Remind Yourself Of Your Audience

Remember, you are presenting to your peers! They all likely have to make a presentation too at some point, and so have been or will be in the same boat. Remembering that your audience is on your side will help you stay cool and collected.

6. Observe Other Speakers

Look at famous leaders, or just other students who typically do well presenting. Notice what they are doing and how you can adapt your performance in those ways.

7. Remind Yourself Of Your Message

If you can come up with a central message, or goal, of your college presentation, you can remind yourself of it throughout your speech and let it guide you.

8. Don’t Apologize

If you make a mistake, don’t apologize. It is likely that no one even noticed! If you do feel you need to point out your own mistake, simply say it and keep moving on with your presentation. No need to be embarrassed, it happens even to the best presenters!

When you smile, you appear warm and inviting as a speaker. You will also relax yourself with your own smile.

The Bottom Line

It can be nerve racking presenting as a college student, but if you use our presentation tips for students, preparing and presenting your college presentation will be a breeze!

In these activities, individual students or groups present in front of their peers for a set period of time. While presentations are commonly oral with the support of visual aids (such as PowerPoint), they can involve other forms of communication, such as a performance, roleplay or a demonstration of a procedure, and may include a facilitated peer discussion. Student presentations may be incorporated into the curriculum to assess certain knowledge areas and skills, and can also enhance student engagement and increase the variety of activities and communication in a subject. They allow staff to provide immediate feedback, and are an opportunity for peer feedback.

There are many ways student presentations can be delivered in a teaching session. They may take place in a classroom and/or via Zoom. They may be presented by individuals, pairs or groups. They may contain PowerPoint slides, or draw upon other online technologies.

How to implement

Step 1: determine the type of presentation.

It is important to first be clear about the type of presentation you expect from your students. Does it need to be group presentation? Or can it be individual? Do students need to necessarily present a PowerPoint? Or could they take a less traditional format, such as a role-play, a musical performance, even a game? The decisions you make depend on what it is you want your students to achieve. And this depend on a range of things, such as your intended learning outcomes, and generic skills graduates are expected to have mastered.

Here are some presentation types to get you thinking:

  • Demonstration: Students demonstrate how something is done.
  • Storytelling: Students present in a story format, using spoken words, images, sounds to help convey a message.
  • Interviews: Students interview one another, or a guest speaker.
  • Role play: Students act out a scenario.
  • Non-linear presentations: Students respond to questions posed by their peers and direct their presentation in directions depending on those questions.
  • Games: Students prepare and facilitate a game.
  • Discussions: Students facilitate a discussion with their peers, so they ask the questions, but their audience do more of the talking.
  • Media: Presentations don’t have to conducted in real-time. They could be performed on media, then shown to other students during a live session.

It is advised you keep it simple and avoid making it overly complex, but to also take every opportunity to enliven it, and make it an enjoyable and worthwhile learning experience for all your students.

At the planning stage, pause to carefully consider the intended learning outcomes aligned to this activity. Being clear about your intended learning outcomes up front can help you identify opportunities for reasonable adjustments, if needed later. For example, if the necessary learning outcomes are about a critical evaluation and engaging communication, a critical evaluation be communicated in a different way, at a different location or a different time if necessary.

Step 2: Determine the required technology

Types of technology you may consider:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint: Available to all students, and include a suite of collaborative tools. These can be presented on a projector, and screenshared for those who are online.
  • Video editing software: Students can use EchoVideo or Kaltura and use the associated suite of editing tools available.
  • Feedback Fruits: If you are planning to incorporate peer feedback, consider using a dedicated peer feedback tool such as Feedback Fruits. This is especially useful when peer feedback takes on a higher level of importance, or where there are several steps.

Tip: In your activity instructions, you should direct students to the online tools intended for use. You should also make sure you are familiar with how to use these technologies so as to avoid any issues arising on the day.

Step 3: Communicate instructions to students

Once you have thought through the steps above, communicate your plan with your students. Where possible, contain all the information students need in one easy-to-access and logical place in the LMS. Create a page of instructions in the assessments or Modules section of your LMS subject, so that students can easily find and refer to them when needed.

Make sure your instructions provide answers to these questions:

  • When will the presentations take place? Is there a schedule for each student or group?
  • How long should the presentation be?
  • Should it be presented online via zoom, or in the classroom?
  • If using PowerPoint, is there an expected number of slides?
  • How much time should be dedicated to question time?
  • How should the face-to-face presenters engage their online peers?
  • How should the online presenters engage their face-to-face peers?

Tip: If the presentations are assessed, make sure you provide students with an opportunity to practice presenting through a non-graded activity, and conduct this in a similar teaching session. This way, they will gain greater familiarisation with the technology and this mode of delivery, ultimately reducing stress. Also allow enough time to provide students with helpful feedback.

Step 4: Present!

On presentation day, make sure that your technology is working prior to the session and that you and your students are prepared.

Suggested presentation activities

Student-led discussion.

Students lead a small group discussion relevant to the week/topic, to demonstrate their understanding of the key concepts and practice facilitation skills.

Similar to role play, students work through a problem/scenario as a way to practice skills in a low-risk environment. Particularly useful for high-risk activities where multiple opportunities to practice under real-world conditions are needed, e.g. medical and nursing education, OH&S.

Problem solution

Provide a problem and have students solve. Particularly useful for mathematical or procedural strategies. Can provide models, demonstrations and/or worked examples/solution documents as supports and for feedback purposes.

How to provide feedback

The great thing about student presentations is that they allow teaching staff to mark on the spot and provide immediate feedback. To do this effectively, it helps to have a clear marking rubric on hand. Provide this to students in advance so they are familiar with how their presentations will be evaluated.

There may also be an excellent opportunity for students to engage in peer feedback. One tool you may like to explore further is Feedback Fruits.

These LMS tools enable student presentation activities in your teaching session or online alternatives:

  • Peer Review in FeedbackFruits
  • Group Member Evaluation in FeedbackFruits
  • LMS Discussions
  • Ed Discussion

Important: Not all tools are  accessible to all students. Actively encourage students to seek out the teaching staff if any tool is inaccessible to them.

Disney on the Yard Innovation Challenge | Meet the Judges

Walt Disney believed in being an innovator. That philosophy still permeates throughout our company today, which is why we are excited to offer HBCU students the opportunity to put their talents and creativity to the test with the Disney on the Yard Innovation Challenge. Each year, students from HBCUs work in teams to deliver a concept in a format similar to a case study. Finalists have the opportunity to present their ideas in front of a panel of esteemed Disney executives. Keep reading to meet this year’s judges and learn how to register for the Disney on the Yard Innovation Challenge!

Meet Stephanie

As the Director of Events and Basketball Operations at ESPN and a 26-year employee at The Walt Disney Company, Stephanie understands that innovation is essential in the business of entertaining sports fans anytime, anywhere. One way that Stephanie has innovated in her role is with the creation of ESPN’s first owned and operated HBCU football event. Stephanie helped launch the 2005 MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Birmingham, Ala. and transitioned the event in 2008 to Orlando, Fla. where she led the event until its move to Atlanta, Ga. in 2018. The MEAC/SWAC Challenge will be celebrating its 20-year anniversary in 2025. Stephanie is also a founding team member of the Celebration Bowl, which will celebrate its 10-year anniversary in 2025. Through these events, Stephanie and the current team create meaningful opportunities for HBCU conference and school administrators, student-athletes, and marching bands.

“The opportunity for these students to solve or create an innovative solution for a real-life work challenge is invaluable experience. … The best advice I would recommend is to give it your all and treat this like the opportunity of a lifetime. This challenge will sharpen your collaboration, critical thinking, and oral presentation skills and offers an opportunity to connect with Disney leaders. ” – Stephanie, director of Events and Basketball Operations at ESPN

Meet Nicole

Nicole, a two-time Howard University graduate (Howard University and Howard School of Law), knows firsthand the value of an HBCU education. In her role as Vice President of Production Human Resources for Disney Entertainment Television, Nicole is committed to giving back to the next generation of innovators from HBCUs. Her passion lies in “reimagining the possibilities of the production environment and creating spaces where everyone feels safe, supported, and included.” As a leader overseeing Production HR for Disney Entertainment Television, Nicole’s team provides onboarding, training, and leadership support for the creatives, cast and crew for over 60 television productions.

“The Innovation Challenge is not just a resume builder; it is practical experience to propel future HBCU talent. … Who knows? A judge or an executive in attendance may be looking for new talent on their team. It's also an important exercise in developing composure under pressure. The experience prepares students for life after graduation. Participants learn firsthand how best to show up and show off their skills at future internships and opportunities. One school gets first prize, but everyone who participates in the innovation challenge really wins.” – Nicole, vice president of Production Human Resources at Disney Entertainment Television

Innovation is at the heart of Kevin’s role—it’s even in his job title! Kevin, vice president of Sports Business Development & Innovation at ESPN, believes that great ideas come from everywhere. Throughout his 16 years working at The Walt Disney Company, he has made long-lasting connections that have introduced him to initiatives like Disney on the Yard. As a judge, he finds value not only in giving back, but also in having the opportunity to hear ideas directly from young people in order to better serve our audiences.

“The experience and exposure that students get from this opportunity is unmatched. … Enjoy the process, network with your fellow students as well as the mentors. Be prepared for questions and don’t over complicate the presentation materials.” – Kevin, vice president of Sports Business Development & Innovation at ESPN

Lincoln High student arrested after fight with staff member in cafeteria

(This story has been updated to add new information)

An altercation between a student and a staff member at Lincoln High School has led to the arrest of a 17-year-old girl, the Leon County Sheriff's Office says.

Portions of the fight, which broke out at around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday during lunch time, were recorded by several students and shared by concerned parents on social media.

The teen was charged with attempted robbery by sudden snatching and battery of a school official – both felonies.

Leon County School District officials say the altercation began after a student attacked a hall monitor and took her phone.

The video, circulating widely on social media and in text threads, begins shortly after and shows a large crowd of students in the cafeteria surrounding a woman and a student wrestling on the ground. The woman, wearing a purple shirt and black pants, appears to kick a female student, who is wearing a white shirt, pink jacket and blue jeans off of her as she lay on the ground.

Several students surrounding the brawl successfully break up the fight pulling both individuals away from each other. After the student is pulled away, she walks off, and the staff member stands up and searches the crowd for her. Once she finds her, she engages in the squabble again, pulling her hair as the student then punches her.

The two are separated again, and the person recording follows the staff member, who then tells another student that she needs to find her phone. She appears disoriented.

The chaotic minute-long video has been confirmed by school officials to be the ending of the fight; it's not clear how long it lasted.

The student was arrested afterward and taken to the Leon Juvenile Detention Center.

"We are still reviewing the video, and it is still very much an open investigation," LCSO communications director Shonda Knight told the Democrat.

The teen also faces student discipline up to expulsion as part of the district's student code of conduct.

Word of the fight spread after Lincoln High School Assistant Principal Jennifer Tibbitts emailed parents through the school system's FOCUS portal at 1:50 p.m. Thursday to inform them of the incident.

"Today at lunch there was an incident involving a student and staff member. Other school staff and our school resource officers responded immediately. This incident is being investigated by Leon County Sheriff's office and will be handled accordingly," the message said.

Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil, Schools Superintendent Rocky Hanna and school board members had announced Wednesday – before the fight – a tour of district high schools to discuss safety and security concerns with students. A visit to Lincoln High was scheduled for Friday.

The latest security incident comes at a tense time at Leon County Schools , which has been grappling with non-credible threats that have caused students to skip school and a rash of arrests of students with weapons on campus.

There has been a surge of violent threats  around Florida and the nation after a school shooting near Atlanta on Sept. 4 left four dead and nine injured.

Improve Student Presentations: Teach Them How to be Effective

March 22, 2019 by Inspired Together Teachers Leave a Comment

Help students to give better presentations

In our experience, teachers are more likely to assign oral presentations than they are to teach students how to do presentations. We give students the task, and sometimes a rubric, and expected to give polished presentations. We tell them to use expression, but rarely teach them how to read with expression.

Unfortunately, the assign and present method rarely results in excellent presentations.

We say enough already!

We know students should learn to give effective presentations. Oral presentation skills are included in local, state and national standards. Almost all careers, and most jobs require some form of public speaking. Students can effectively demonstrate their learning through speaking, and if it is done well, they can help others learn.

Many teachers struggle to help students with presentations because they fear public speaking themselves. In some studies, fear of public speaking is the number one fear of the American public. In one study, 41 % of people listed public speaking as their number one fear and 19 percent listed death. We should take note when people are more afraid of public speaking than death!

We can eliminate the fear of public speaking if we teach students the skills for good speaking, give them opportunities to practice in low stress situations, and start by frequently practicing they are young. A high school or college speech class is extremely intimidating if students have had no formal instruction in speaking up until that time. To make matters worse, speech classes are seldom required, so many students don’t even get that training.

Where do students get an opportunity for frequent, low stakes practice in speaking? In the classroom.

Every teacher, not just language arts teachers, have an opportunity to help students become confident speakers. Students can improve their presentations skills in history, science, social studies or math in addition to language arts classes. Subjects such as the arts and languages come alive when students learn and use good presentation skills.

You can take back student presentations by teaching students effective presentation skills.

before you begin, establish rules and expectations..

Emphasize that the goal of speaking assignments is practice to help students become effective speakers.

Help students to understand how having good oral presentations skills will be an asset in the future.

Encourage a growth mindset- if students are nervous, explain that they haven’t perfected the skill yet.

Teach students how to be a good audience and set the expectation that they will be polite. Teach them how to ask good questions of the presenter.

Teach students that their role is not just to create the content, but to practice the skills of effective speaking.

Determine an attention getting signal to use to call students back to you for further instruction.

Teach, model and practice the basics of effective speaking.

Project your voice.

Have student practice projecting their voice across the room without shouting. Try it with a whisper. Students will be amazed that they can whisper so loud that others can hear them at a distance. Practice reading a line or two with different volumes. Have students partner up and try speaking at different volumes from different distances. They want to be sure that everyone can hear them.

Practice standing with a confident stance.

Students should be comfortable, but not slouching. They should stand still and can move occasionally, but not sway back and forth. They can take a few steps or move across “the stage” occasionally, which adds interest.

Practice good eye contact.

Good eye contact helps speakers connect with the audience, which means they will be more engaged in your presentation. Students often miss this one. If they are nervous, they will often fail to make eye contact with others.

Teach students to look up and smile at the audience before they begin. This often puts all parties at ease.

Lack of eye contact also occurs when students read their papers or power points word-for-word. Good speakers often share the content with notes rather than reading from a script. Good speaking is more like talking than reading. If students must read, have them write “look up” at various points in the script. Alternatively, have students write highlights from their papers on note cards, choosing the most important or interesting parts.

Pay attention to speaking rate.

Rate is effectively taught by modeling. Try reading something very fast. It is difficult to keep up. Then read something slowly. It becomes boring. Have students practice reading a paragraph with a partner, alternating fast and slow until they come to a happy medium. Advanced students can learn to modulate rate for effect, for example slowing down to build suspense. This will avoid the dreaded monotone.

Teach students to articulate.

In general, Americans can be sloppy speakers. Teach students to pronounce things carefully. Voice all of the letters, for example say running, rather than runnin.”  Look for other culprits of sloppy speech, “Ta” for “to” and “gonna” instead of going to. Watch out for mumbling.

Use a more formal tone than you might use in every day speech.

Teach students that there is a time and place for slang and sloppy speech, for example when you are with your friends or in informal situations. Public speaking is a time to use more formal pronunciations. We once heard a student presenting to the board of education and he opened by calling them “Dudes.” It was not well received. You don’t want to put off your audience by appearing unprofessional.

Teach students to use facial expressions to add interest.

If students have a good command of vocal parts of speaking, teach them to add facial expressions, which will increase audience attention. Give students an opportunity to practice facial expressions. Ask students to show disgust, happiness, sadness, nervousness in their faces. Show accusing looks, hopeful looks and embarrassed looks. Students can make a note in their scripts to remind them to use a facial expression.

Teach students to use gestures.

Using gestures appropriately will also help your audience maintain interest. Students may use their hands or some part of their body to add emphasis to something they say. If they choose to use a gesture, make sure it is a full gesture, done slowly and purposefully. Students often rush a gesture, throwing it away and eliminating effectiveness because it is done too quickly and not completely. Practice gestures by having students say “goodbye” and waving. Too little or gesturing too quickly, and it isn’t effective. Too long and it looks ridiculous.

Students often like to use gestures. If students want to add gestures, they should plan for them and practice them.

Have students write an attention getting opening.

Students want to get the audience’s attention right from the start. “This report is about the role of farmers in 15 th Century China ” does not inspire interest.  “Did you know that each and every one of you has something in common with 15 th Century farmers in China?”   Now we are listening.

Have students start with an intriguing question, an interesting fact or a surprising statement. Have them hint at something valuable they are going to share. Tell them to find a way to connect their topic to their audience.  A little time spent here can have a big pay off in terms of audience interest.

With time and practice, students will improve and gain valuable public speaking skills.

Many students have something to say and want to be heard. Others crave attention and relish being in the limelight. Teaching students the basics of speaking will help them to feel comfortable and confident with public speaking.

Developing good public speaking skills will serve them well in many situations in life, from communicating well in relationships to giving a wedding toast to making a presentation in their future careers.

We hope to banish boring speeches from our classrooms.

School of Electrical and Computer Engineering

College of engineering, student analog chip designs come to life through new collaboration with texas instruments.

presentation about student life

Whether it is the sound of music through your headphones or the precise control of a robotic arm, analog circuits play a crucial role in both established and future technologies.

Analog does a lot of things, but in general, it functions as the interpreter between the real world and digital devices. It transforms signals — like sound waves, voltage levels, temperature, pressure, and light intensity — into information that digital systems can understand.

As the semiconductor industry evolves, the demand for skilled analog engineers continues to grow even in this digital world.

“Analog circuits remain vital because they enable the initial data acquisition from the environment,” said Assistant Professor Shaolan Li . “That’s just the application perspective, but they are also structurally very different than digital circuits. Students need hands-on experience with real-world measurements, which are crucial for mastering analog circuits.”

To meet this demand, the Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is collaborating with Texas Instruments (TI) to launch strategic educational opportunities aimed at providing students access to industry-grade analog chip design, fabrication, and testing processes. TI is a global semiconductor company that designs, manufactures, and sells analog and embedded processing chips.

The collaboration supports ECE’s analog and mixed-signal design curriculum, including a new course and support for faculty and students through professorships and teaching assistantships. Students will further benefit from TI’s expertise through guest lectures, mentorships, and having direct access to learn from the technical leaders in the industry.

An analog chip similar to what students design (the black TK1 square) on a circuit board connected to testing equipment.

“Working with educational institutions such as Georgia Tech is important for semiconductor companies, as we look to inspire and equip future working engineers,” said Roland Sperlich, vice president for processors at TI and an ECE graduate. “This collaborative effort with academia will help address the future workforce needs in the industry, and also can spark innovations that will help shape the future of the electronics in our everyday lives.”

FIRST TO FAB

As part of the collaboration, TI is allowing Georgia Tech students to access its analog process technology and 300mm wafer fabrication capabilities. For the first time, student designs will be sent for manufacturing in TI’s newest wafer fab in North Texas.

The facility is among the most efficient, high-volume wafer factories in the world. A wafer is a thin slice of semiconductor material — typically silicon — used in the fabrication of integrated circuits (ICs) and other microdevices.

“This opportunity and level of access is incredibly valuable and transformative for our students,” said Arijit Raychowdhury , professor and Steve W. Chaddick School Chair of ECE. “As someone who would have loved this chance as a student, I am thrilled to see Georgia Tech students’ designs being fabricated in such advanced technology. TI has been an important and long-time supporter of Georgia Tech, and we are grateful for their continued backing.”

The inaugural cohort of ECE’s new analog tapeout course, which is part of new analog educational opportunities provided by the School in collaboration with TI. The majority of students are pursuing their master’s degrees, but the class includes some undergraduate students.

NEW COURSE PROVIDES REAL-WORLD CHIP TAPEOUT EXPERIENCE

The student designs are sent to TI’s fab as part of a new course, ECE 4804: Analog VLSI (Very-Large-Scale Integration) I: Tapeout. Students historically learn analog design theoretically, using simulations with generic models, partly due to the difficulty of accessing industry-grade fabrication facilities and tools.

However, the new course offers students the chance to learn by doing as they navigate the real-world chip tapeout process. This involves transferring a final semiconductor design from a computer-aided design (CAD) file to a manufacturing facility.

The analog course mirrors a similar digital circuit course introduced in collaboration with Apple in 2022. That digital course has proven to be highly sought after by students and provided a roadmap for the new analog offerings.

“For a lot of students, the reason that they’re registered for this course is because they can complete the tapeout process. There’s nowhere else [to have this opportunity] unless you go to a company,” said Li, who designed and teaches the new analog course with research engineer Tzu-Han Wang, who serves as the teaching assistant (TA).

The year-long course began this past spring, when students formed groups of four to design analog ICs, including data converters and amplifiers. These designs were sent to TI for fabrication over the summer. The completed wafers will be returned to Georgia Tech late in the Fall 2024 semester. Students will test their designs by learning to configure the test instruments, write support programs, and debug their chips.

COMMITMENT, COLLABORATION, AND CHALLENGES

Photo of Professor Shaolan Li and teaching assistant Tzu-Han Wang

Assistant Professor Shaolan LI and research assistant Tzu-Han Wang are the first instructors of the new course ECE 4804: Analog VLSI (Very-Large-Scale Integration) I: Tapeout.

According to Li, the ability to take a design from concept to physical chip is a rare and valuable opportunity for students, especially undergraduates, but it comes with its challenges.

Industry fabs are highly specialized and expensive to operate, requiring significant investment and stringent security protocols.

“Teaching the course is also demanding,” Li said. “It requires considerable time from skilled TAs, who are not only responsible for developing pedagogy but also for ensuring that students’ work meets the necessary industry standards before their designs are sent to fabs.”

Assistant Professor Shaolan Li giving a lecture on analog chip testing. Li developed the new course born out of a collaboration with TI and ECE.

Wang, who helped develop much of the course’s instructional material with Li, added:     “A TA must be both a technician and an instructor for a course like this. It is a very different dynamic than an average course. Students often face issues that even a TA might not know how to handle, but it is exciting and mutually beneficial because we can explore and resolve problems together.”

EXPANDING OPPORTUNITIES

In addition to producing wafers based on students’ designs, TI is offering Process Design Kits (PDKs) to aid Georgia Tech faculty and students in modeling their analog IC designs. The collaboration also provides students with access to TI engineers and experts through guest lectures and mentorships, including a TI engineer embedded in the tapeout course.

Ultimately, students will understand performance issues, collaborate on hardware design, integrate components, and master the end-to-end physical design flow in analog circuits.

“Taking on this amount of work in such a short amount of time is challenging, but students are embracing it with enthusiasm,” Li said. “The experience not only enhances students’ understanding of the complexities involved in chip design and fabrication, but it also significantly reduces the ramp-up time once students enter the industry.”

Raychowdhury noted that the collaboration with TI underscores ECE’s growing focus on providing students with opportunities to learn directly from industry leaders. Future programs are being developed in glass-based packaging, heterogeneous integration, satellite communications, and more.

“Students are expressing a strong desire for more experiences like this, and we are committed to serving them,” he said. “There is a sense of pride when collaborating closely with industry leaders, when the stakes are a bit higher. It is all about ensuring students feel confident and well prepared before they enter the workforce.”

St. john’s university medical students will work on eerily lifelike mannequins that ‘speak, sweat and cry’.

St. John’s University formally dedicated its new $106 million health center on Wednesday — unveiling a place where students will interact with eerily lifelife mannequins and even trained actors to hone their craft.

The new state-of-the-art St. Vincent’s Health Sciences Center also comes equipped with VR setups and X-ray machines for nursing, radiological and physician assistant students.

The mannequins give students the opportunity to train for emergencies on the real thing — almost.

Student and teacher attend to fake dummy with stethoscope

“They can do everything. Speak, sweat, cry, and blink,” said Simulations Director Christopher Naidu, who runs the simulation suites where mannequins sit in hospital beds.

In an exclusive tour with the Post, Naidu demonstrated how technicians control the mannequins’ vitals, speaking through a microphone to simulate a patient in respiratory distress from a back-door operating room.

A professor and student inside the simulation room could be seen on camera from Naidu’s monitor. The student-teacher pair were seen using a stethoscope to check the dummy’s vitals after it “complained of shortness of breath after a patellar surgery.”

The university has also hired agency actors that that will run through real-life scenarios with students beginning in October, acting out heart attacks, strokes and even mental health emergencies.

“Their vision really got put into the product,” said Lin Huang, a junior nursing student who began working with the real-life mannequins in one of the several skills and simulation labs in the past week.

Fellow junior nursing student Andrea Lin said the tools “makes it interesting for students.”

“Normally we would practice on each other, and we would assume that our patient or classmate was just a healthy adult,” Lin said. “But with the mannequins we can, like with real people, assume a lot of different sicknesses.”

The 70,000-square-foot building began construction in early 2022 after President Rev. Brian Shanley came into position in early 2021 and decided to move forward with the project after it was halted amid previous leadership changes.

The pricey building was funded through a combination of public and private grants, including a $5 million New York State Higher Education Capital Matching Grant, a $700,000 Empire State Development Grant and $1.25 million from the US Department of Health and Human Services.

More than $20 million in philanthropic support was also provided by alumni couple and longtime St. John’s benefactors Peter P. D’Angelo and Margaret LaRosa D’Angelo.

university officials cut red ribbon in front of building

Its sustainability features include geothermal heating, rooftop solar panels and windows designed to reduce thermal loss.

“When I got here I thought this is a no-brainer,” Shanley said to the Post.

“We’re in a daunting higher-end moment right now and we think that healthcare is a really critical part of St Johns moving forward,” Shanley added. “And from a mission point of view, it’s right in our sweet spot.”

Shanley also noted it was important for the nursing, PA, and radiological science students to be able to work in the same building to simulate a real hospital, teaching students through a “team-led” approach.

Radiological science students could be found in fully functional X-ray rooms downstairs, where they will soon be able to practice technician work and collaborate with other students.

Students standing around Xray machine

“I honestly was excited, I was like, ‘oh my gosh, a top-of-the-line room where I can actually shoot X-rays on?'” senior radiological student Susan said. “Before I could position a patient, but you dont always know what will come up on the image. So to actually see my work and have my teachers there to critique is amazing.”

Another component of the learning experience is Perspectus VR stations where students wear headsets and use controllers to dissect anatomy and CT scans to get a slower-paced understanding of the human body outside of simulation labs.

The VR experience was led by Associate Professor Jeanette Perron, who said she has excitedly brought many of her students to come to view the lab.

“We don’t live in a two-dimensional world. Exploring the body in three dimensions is the most hands-on way for our students to learn,” Perron said.
