Harry Potter Series

Harry Potter was a series of books authored by one of the most eminent writers of our generation, J.K. Rowling. These books showcase the wizarding world and its workings. J.K. Rowling has been so successful at weaving a picture of this world, that it feels real. Although the series contains seven books, I have a particular favourite. My favourite book from the series is The Goblet of fire.

When I started reading the book, it caught my attention instantly. Even though I had read all the previous parts, none of the books caught my attention as this one did. It gave a larger perspective into the wizarding world. One of the things which excite me the most about this book is the introduction of the other wizard schools. The concept of the Tri-wizard tournament is one of the most brilliant pieces I have come across in the Harry Potter series.

In addition, this book also contains some of my favourite characters. The moment I read about Victor Krum’s entry, I was star struck. The aura and personality of that character described by Rowling are simply brilliant. Further, it made me become a greater fan of the series.

What Harry Potter Series Taught Me?

Even though the books are about the world of wizards and magic, the Harry Potter series contains a lot of lessons for young people to learn. Firstly, it teaches us the importance of friendship. I have read many books but never come across a friendship like that of Harry, Hermoine, and Ron. These three musketeers stuck together throughout the books and never gave up. It taught me the value of a good friend.

Further, the series of Harry Potter taught me that no one is perfect. Everyone has good and evil inside them. We are the ones who choose what we wish to be. This helped me in making better choices and becoming a better human being. We see how the most flawed characters like Snape had goodness inside them. Similarly, how the nicest ones like Dumbledore had some bad traits. This changed my perspective towards people and made me more considerate.

Finally, these books gave me hope. They taught me the meaning of hope and how there is light at the end of the tunnel. It gave me the strength to cling on to hope in the most desperate times just like Harry did all his life. These are some of the most essential things I learned from Harry Potter.

In conclusion, while there were many movies made in the books. Nothing beats the essence and originality of the books. The details and inclusiveness of books cannot be replaced by any form of media. Therefore, the Goblet of Fire remains to be my favourite book.

Any good short essay on your favorite book will ask how valuable it is. You need to justify it, and why it was important enough to write about. When writing about a book’s value, you are writing about its topic. What is it teaching people? What merits the focus it has? You need to justify your choice according to these questions.

Remember that there is always value in books. You only need to show people what that book means to you.

When you are preparing to write, look at some essay samples. Model your essay on your favorite book on a previously written sample, and you stand a good chance of writing a good essay.

Samples are good for a few reasons:

  • They show you what is expected in an essay
  • They can show different writing styles
  • They can give you ideas
  • They can inspire you to try new ways of writing
  • They show how different people approach the essays

Your first step in writing should be to create a writing plan. The essay on the book you like the most will involve a lot of separate elements. A writing plan will help you remember everything.

First of all, write a plan that has simply the basics in it. Put in paragraph headings. Put in your quotes. Now, look at it. What else do you want in there? Do you want your thesis statement? Do you want notes about what to put in each paragraph? Put in what you think will be helpful.

Anybody reading an essay entitled ‘my favorite book’ will want to hear writing from the heart. Don‘t just write a generic essay. Make it clear what this book means to you, specifically. This is the way to make your essay stand out in a crowd. This is what gets you noticed.

A key to good writing is actually wanting to do it. Write from the heart, and you will find the act of writing much easier.

There are many ways you can go about writing an essay about books. But whatever their focus, try and spend at least some time talking about what you liked. You will attract people’s attention by talking about what you like. Spend at least one paragraph on your favorite book in talking about how much you like it. It will make your essay even better. Talk about what you like, and people will remember it after they finish reading.

When writing, try and list any advantages a book has. People might be reading your favorite book essay for class and wondering why it is your favorite. Let them know. List the advantages the book has over other books.

Every book has something in it to make it worthwhile. You just need to show other people what that is. This is what will make your essay stand. Your essay will tell people what it means to you, rather than be generic.

The key to writing your favorite book essay is to act like you are trying to sell the book. The point of an essay is to keep people reading to the very end. Try and think beyond this point. What do you want people to do when they finish reading an essay about your favorite book? Do you want them to move on with their lives, or do you want them to read the book?

Obviously, you want them to read the book.

Don’t attempt to tackle the entire essay at once. When writing about your favorite book essay in English, try and do it in bite-sized chunks instead. Try and tackle one paragraph a day. This will give you mental space and physical time to handle it all. A lot goes into writing these essays. Doing it a bit at a time will keep you from being overwhelmed. This will also mean you can focus totally on one single element. Themes one day, character the next, and so on.

When you have finished writing, it is time to check your essay. An essay about the book you like most needs to stand by itself. Imagine that the person reading it knows nothing about you or your abilities. If they see spelling and grammar problems, they will react negatively. Make sure you have included everything you need to! The worst thing you can do is hand in an unfinished essay. Check that everything you want to include is there.

Your favorite book essay should not have any spelling or grammar mistakes. Spelling and grammar are the fundamentals of any writing. If you slip upon them, then people have a negative reaction to it. Proofread your work more than once. You would be amazed at how much you can miss. For your last proof, try and step away from the work for a while. You can then come back to it with fresh eyes.

Ask a friend to proofread your favorite storybook essay. Quite often people find themselves too close to their work. They honestly can’t see mistakes or inaccuracies. To avoid leaving any mistakes, ask a friend to help you. They have fresh eyes, and so will be able to see mistakes much more easily. Getting a friend to proofread means that you will catch any mistakes you might simply have glossed over automatically. You can dramatically improve your work this way.

short essay about my family history

This is an essay on my favorite book. My favorite book is Hogfather , by Terry Pratchett. The overarching story follows an Assassin called Teatime as he tries to kill the Hogfather (the Discworld’s version of Santa), and the people who are trying to stop him.

The major theme of the book is the nature of belief. This is explicitly shown by Teatime stealing teeth, and implicitly by Susan when she helps Death defeats the Auditors. The nature of belief in this book is such that, with no one to believe in the smaller things, the bigger issues, such as Hope, would eventually disappear.

What I love best about this book is the way it shows both sides of a conflict. Even if it does skew in supporting one particular angel, it still shows both sides. I appreciate that the motivations of everyone involved are laid out.

This book is a wonderful read. It combines humor with sincerity to an amazing degree. Even when people are having difficult and dangerous conversations, there is always a feeling that everything will be alright. Pratchett has managed to bring all of his characters to life in the book. Plot and themes.

“1984” is set in a future where society is under the control of the Party, led by Big Brother. The protagonist, Winston Smith, is a low-ranking member of the Party who begins questioning the regime’s oppressive rules. The book’s themes of surveillance, manipulation, and the eradication of individuality are as thought-provoking as they are chilling.

Impact and Relevance

Orwell’s “1984” is not just a book, but a mirror reflecting the potential consequences of absolute power. The concept of “Newspeak”, the language created by the Party to limit free thought, resonates with the manipulation of information in today’s digital age. 500 Words Essay on My Favourite Book

Books are the repositories of knowledge, wisdom and a source of joy. They are our best companions that open up new dimensions of understanding, and among the multitude of books, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ by Harper Lee holds a special place in my heart.

Unveiling the Narrative

Characters and plot.

The story is narrated by Scout Finch, a young girl living with her older brother Jem and their widowed father Atticus, a highly moral and principled lawyer. The plot thickens when Atticus is appointed to defend Tom Robinson, a black man falsely accused of raping a white woman. The trial and its aftermath expose the children to the harsh realities of prejudice and moral hypocrisy.

Symbolism and Themes

The title of the book itself is a metaphorical symbol. Atticus advises his children that it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird as they do nothing but make music for us to enjoy. This can be seen as an allegory for the unjust treatment of innocent individuals in society.

A Lesson in Empathy

Impact and influence.

‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ has left an indelible mark on me. It taught me that standing up for what is right, even when the majority is against you, is the true mark of integrity. The courage and righteousness of Atticus Finch have greatly influenced my personal values and ethics.

In conclusion, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ is a timeless classic that delves into the depths of human nature, exploring themes of innocence, morality, and racial prejudice. Its profound impact and the lessons it imparts make it my favorite book. Reading it is not merely an act of leisure, but a journey into the complexities of society and the human mind. It has shaped my perspective towards life and continues to inspire me to stand against injustice and uphold morality, even in the face of adversity.

Nothing in this world can beat the importance of reading storybooks. When we read a storybook we are immediately shifted to a different fictional world. I recently loved a book based on dance experience. As a dancer, it gives me immense joy to go through it several times. The book is Rasia, by Koral Dasgupta.

The book explores the story of a dancer Rajsekhar Subramanian and his several experiences when he meets a woman named Vatsala in New York. She makes him realize the importance of knowing his own perfect self and also the significance of his wife Manasi in his career. The concept of a dancer knowing himself through his passionate dance attracts my interest the most. Stories like this must be read to even know oneself the best.

Reading storybooks is the biggest asset of human life. Nothing compares itself in this world with the reading of a storybook and the emotions that are experienced after going through it. A storybook is much different from those we read in the educational syllabus.

It is mainly made for fun reading and also to learn something quite easily than the cramped syllabus. For me, reading storybooks is simply an expression of liberty and happiness. It is my time where I let none interrupt. I not only read them but also make my own interpretations and write them down in my journal.

A book that I have journaled really well is an English translation of Chokher Bali by Rabindranath Tagore. The story, in English, undoubtedly is a masterpiece of the great author. The novel tells us about a complex relationship between the four main characters, Mahendra, Binodini, Ashalata, and Behari. The friendships, husband-wife relationships, and the intrusion of an outsider widow, all sum up the story as a complex web of emotions.

The reader feels confused as to support Binodini or simply accuse her of destroying the life of Ashalata and Mahendra. Behari is praised for his attitude and for Mahendra’s fickle mind Binodini suffers throughout her life. As a friend, she shows Ashalata the true nature of her husband. Chokher Bali is my favourite Tagore novel that weaves great complexity into a final solution.

Life is not always s peaceful and happy as it seems to be. We often feel tired when we cannot perform as we want, with our family and friends. In those lonely moments, we need a company with whom we can share our thoughts and feelings. Books, especially storybooks help us to vent these emotions, happy or sad. For me, storybooks are my best friends who help me go through all my problems. Whenever I need a company that can transport me to a different world, then only storybooks can help me do so.

The best storybook which I have read recently is a famous book written by Mulk Raj Anand named The Untouchable. The story is as important to the reader as it is to the countrymen. The story has a central figure called Bakkha who is a latrine cleaner. The boy is of young age and through his generations, he is forced to work as a latrine cleaner. He is tortured tremendously by the higher caste people of his society.

Even Bakha’s sister is equally humiliated by the head priest of the temple who tries to molest her for being a sweeper girl. She is forced to stand afar in the line to fetch water because she comes from the family of the sweepers. Class discrimination gets its most terrific view with the treatment of Bakha when he visits the house of a woman and is humiliated. The woman throws a chapatti at his face because he is a sweeper. The position of a human is destroyed by this ill-treatment.

The story’s significance is that it can be divided into two parts. In the first part, Bakha gets ill-treated by the community members. In the second part, the arrival of Mahatma Gandhi changes the entire course of action in the book. Bakha after getting disrespected leaves the city and goes to a lonely place.

From there he is swept away by a crowd who are attending the protest movement of Gandhiji. He visits the venue and after hearing the words of the Mahatma he is inspired. His final confusion is relieved when a person discusses how a different sort of latrine will be employed in India and for that no cleaner will be required regularly. Here the novel ends.

The novel is lovely to me as it shows the reality of caste discrimination in a colonial country like India. In fact, still, India is a victim of such social issues which need to be addressed seriously and get them removed from society.

So, after going through the entire session, if you still have any doubts regarding the context, put them in the comment section below for further clarification from my side. If this lesson has helped you let us know that as well. Keep browsing our website for more such content.

How to Write an Essay On Books

To write a good essay about books on a free topic, you just need to understand what you want to get. And, based on this information, make a plan.

To begin with, you need to understand the difference between these concepts:

  • Are you writing a personal opinion about a book? You can tell whether you liked it or not, what in it caught you or repulsed you.
  • Or is it an overview of the story lines? A full description of what is written in the book, your thoughts on the main points of the book.
  • Or is it a description of the book? Then highlight points of interest. This kind of text usually encourages you to read it.

If you are writing an essay on books for school, you probably need to write a book review.

Preparing for the essay

The experts at StudyCrumb Educational Agency assure you that by following a simple procedure, you will be able to write the essay you need quickly and easily.

  • Choose the book you want to write an essay about. It is better if it is one that you have memorized well. Some teachers recommend writing an essay on your favorite books.
  • Make a short outline that includes an introduction, the main part, and a conclusion.
  • Recall what your book is about. Write out a couple of main thoughts that are memorable and seem close to your heart.
  • Write a review of the book, the kind you’d like to write for your friend. In simple, uncomplicated words.

Essay Writing

Having prepared your drafts and outline for your essay, you’ve already done a tremendous job, and it’s just a matter of doing a little bit more. Be sure to remember that the essay about the book you read is your thoughts, feelings, and emotions about the work itself.

In the water part, write about the plot of the book, about the essence, but don’t reveal the intrigue completely, so that your classmates can read the book too. You can quote a few curious places, but don’t forget to justify why you chose them.

In the main part you should write your personal opinion of what you have read. If the teacher did not mention that the book must necessarily be a favorite, you can also write about the book, which, on the contrary, left a negative residue in your soul.

It is better to make the ending short and concise. Write what you like to read, why you like to read, and recommend the chosen work to read all. Check out  http://cheapessaysonline.com/  for quality essay examples for your own inspiration.

Examples of essay on books

An essay about a book leaves the imagination free, especially when you’re a big fan of the book world. But sometimes reading is much easier than writing. So here are a few examples of essays.

Introduction:

“I love to read. Reading helps you immerse yourself in that completely different world. Makes you forget that you are a mere student. You can become a great traveler, fly around the globe, or you can find yourself in a school of magic and learn complex magical sciences. My choice was the Harry Potter book, because that’s the world where I spent my childhood.

“My favorite book is Roald Dahl ‘s Matilda. I think this work is suitable for children as well as adults. Matilda is a little girl with strange parents and a very mean principal. And then, one day, a good teacher shows up at school who treats all the students, including Matilda, with awe. When I was little, I was sure it was just a fairy tale. But now, after rereading this book to refresh my memory, I realize that the book has adult overtones. Matilda is the personification of all the children of the world who face the hostility of adults who should not have been parents or educators.”

The final part:

“I would like to finish my essay about the book “Three Comrades” with the advice: read, look for a moral in any work, and you can become a good person.

These are just examples of how you can write essay on books. Choose your favorite book and write whatever you want to say.

The writer describes books as the best option for self-learners. They don’t only note an issue, topic, or story but also put effort and emotions into their writing. Next, she discusses the types of books and their subcategories. Finally, she gives tips about finding a good book to read.

“The possibility of reading while also doing something else produces one of the stranger phenomenological characteristics of audio book reading: you can have a whole set of unrelated and real (if only partially attended) experiences while simultaneously experiencing a book.”

Gram’s primary focus in this essay is audiobooks, discussing their history and how audiobooks started. She also mentions how audiobooks help blind people who find it challenging to read braille books. The author also compares physical books and audiobooks to help the reader choose better for a long drive, house cleaning, or simply doing anything other than reading.

“Books are standing counsellors and preachers, always at hand and always neutral.”

Sastry considers novels the best option when one is tired and looking for healthy recreational activity. Still, the author didn’t forget the fact that reading history, science, religion, and other more “serious” books can also bring gratification to their readers. Books offer unlimited benefits if well used, but not when abused, and as the writer said, “no book can be good if studied negligently.”

“Books are important because they provide a few things that are key to an open and intelligent society.”

The essay is best to be read by students from classes 7 to 10, as it gives the simplest explanation of why it is vital to read a book during their spare time or extended holidays. Ram says people get inspired and receive life lessons by reading books. Reading classic and newer books with lots of words of wisdom and new ideas is better than wasting time and learning nothing.

Essay on My Favourite Book: My Favourite Book Essay for Class 3

Geronimo stilton – the hunt for the golden book.

I love reading and my favourite book is from the Geronimo Stilton series, written by the Italian author Elisabetta Dami. ‘Geronimo Stilton – The Hunt for the Golden Book’ is filled with adventures and is an exciting read. The story of the book starts with the central character, Geronimo Stilton, celebrating a successful stint of 10 years of writing. Grandfather Williams throws a party to celebrate, and Geronimo decides to write a book for this occasion. However, his laptop seems to be missing. So, Geronimo and his friends embark on a journey to find his computer and print the new book, just before the party starts. The book captures the interest of young readers and also provides them a bonus read at the end. There is an extra mini mystery at the end of the book, named ‘The Lake Monster’ that has an equally exciting storyline.

Essay on My Favourite Book: My Favourite Book Essay for Class 4

I am very fond of reading books and one of my recent favourites is ‘BFG’ by Roald Dahl. The story starts with a little girl named Sophie being kidnapped by a big friendly giant (BFG) from the orphanage where she stays. She had seen him blowing good dreams into the windows of children that night.

Although she thought she would be eaten by the giant, he was not like the other giants in Giant Country who gobbled up little children. The BFG was a nice and gentle giant who spent his life blowing happy dreams to little children. He spoke a funny language called gobblefunk that made me laugh out loud throughout the book! It’s not surprising that Sophie also loved the way he spoke.

Soon, BFG and Sophie become friends and he takes her to Dream Country where they catch and bottle dreams and nightmares. Sophie also has another adventure with some of the dangerous giants in Giant Country. While she was hiding in a snozzcumber (a cucumber-like vegetable that BFG loved to eat), she gets accidently eaten by an evil giant named Bloodbottler. This was followed by a hilarious description of how BFG saves her from the eyes of the evil giant.

Towards the end of the book, Sophie starts a fight among the evil giants and plots a plan to imprison them with the help of the queen. She goes to Buckingham Palace where she and the BFG meet the queen and inform her about the evil man-eating giants. They eventually capture the giants and imprison them in a deep pit in London.

The book also has impressive illustrations created by Quentin Blake. These pictures add to the charm of the story and make the book a Roald Dahl masterpiece enjoyed by generations of young readers.

2. Ramayana

I love reading books. I have read many books, and am never bored when I am in the company of books.

One book that has influenced me immensely and has become my favourite is the epic Ramayana in English, written by Valmiki (Author), Arshia Sattar (Translator).  The style is simple and the book is very interesting. Once I take up this book I can’t put it down.

The book presents Lord Rama as the embodiment of virtues. We also learn about the sufferings he underwent to uphold his principles. Devi Sita is a devoted wife, ready to undergo any hardship or suffering for her husband.

Bharata is a glorious example of a good brother. He is an embodiment of respect and sacrifice. His love for Rama has no parallel.

There are many other characters in the book and each one plays an important role in the development of the story. Jatayu is one such key character. Hanuman is another. Both were loyal and devoted to Lord Rama.

The Ramayana upholds basic human values such as devotion, loyalty and service, and condemns lowly qualities like avarice, selfishness, and greed for power. This is a book that can be read for a truly spiritual experience.

I have read and re-read it many times. It refreshes my mind and inspires my soul each time.

Essay on My Favourite Book: My Favourite Book Essay for Class 5

1. the magic of the lost temple.

I love reading and one of my favourite books is ‘The Magic of the Lost Temple’ by Sudha Murthy. The book tells the story of twelve-year old Nooni who goes to spend a summer vacation with her grandparents in a village. Nooni is a curious child and she has an urge to abstract information at all times. This sets the scene for a thrilling mystery at the beginning of the book.

Since Nooni stays in Bangalore with her parents, the shift to the village life is enchanting. She finds joy in playing with her cousins, savouring the food cooked by her grandmother, and living the carefree lifestyle led by the villagers. I particularly enjoyed the narration that makes you feel like you are listening to a story told by your grandmother.

Soon Nooni finds a mysterious ancient stepwell in the midst of a forest. She tries to find the secret behind the stepwell with her friends.

‘The Magic of the Lost Temple’ appeals to children and adults alike, as it weaves a story around the uncomplicated life in a rural village. The book also makes a point on issues of social relevance, such as the importance of toilets in villages, the need to give back to the community, and the respect one should have for heritage sites.

I also liked the illustrations in the book; these were in perfect harmony with the characters sketched out by the author. In a nutshell, this is a heartwarming tale of how Nooni experiences the real value of the simple things in life. This is what makes it a memorable read for me.

A good work of literature is the outcome of years of dedication from the author. I generally like books which have stood the test of time and to which succeeding generations provide their seal of approval. I have read a number of books and there are several which are my favourite. This includes the tragedies of Shakespeare, the novels of Charles Dickens and the plays of George Bernard Shaw.

But there is one book that I particularly enjoy reading and that is the great drama, ‘Macbeth’, by Shakespeare.

Macbeth is the story of an ambitious man and an equally ambitious woman, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth respectively. They commit the murder of King Duncan in their own castle, so that Macbeth could become the King.

Macbeth takes over as the King of Scotland and his wife, Lady Macbeth, becomes the queen. After the first murder, Macbeth plans the murder of his chieftain Banquo, Lady Macduff, and her son, because they are closely related to his enemy Macduff.

The characters of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are very beautifully sketched by Shakespeare. The chief attraction lies in the character of Lady Macbeth.

The instincts that are usually associated with femininity, i.e., motherhood and compassion, are strikingly absent in Lady Macbeth. Instead, she appears to be an ambitious and ruthless person with an insatiable desire for power.

Macbeth teaches us the great moral lesson that the wage of sin is death. Those who take to wrong and immoral courses, like Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, will surely find grief in the course of life. Virtue will surely be rewarded.

3. My Experiments with Truth

We know that food is important for a healthy body. Similarly books are important for a healthy mind. Books are our true friends. They help us understand the world around us. Through books we are able to study the thoughts of different people.

Though I have read many books written by acclaimed authors, “My Experiments with Truth” is my favourite book. It was written by  Mahatma Gandhi , the Father of the Nation. I like the book because of several reasons.

It tells us about the life of the great man who got us freedom from the British. It has been written in a simple and easy-to-understand style. It is very interesting and keeps the reader gripped from beginning to end.

My Experiments with Truth is full of intriguing incidents and moral lessons. Gandhi narrates the stories of  King Harish Chandra  and  Shravan Kumar,  that have influenced him greatly. It is eye opening to read how this great man fought against untouchability and racial discrimination. My Experiments with Truth is a great book indeed!

Long Essay on My Favourite Book 100, 150, 200, 250 Words for Kids and Students in English

I love reading books, they are indeed my ‘best friends’. It is a tedious task to choose a good book because thousands of books are published every year. I always take the suggestions made by my teachers and parents into account while choosing a book. Some days back, my uncle gave me one as a birthday gift as he knows my love for books. It is called The Mahabharata’ and has been written in English by Anand Sagar Chowdhry and published by Goodwill Publishing House, Delhi.

Essay on “My Favorite Book-The Mahabharata” In English

When I went through the first chapter, a fascinating story unfolded itself. King Satyavan married the daughter of a washerman and his son from the first wife took a pledge to remain a bachelor all his life. He came to be known as Bhishma Pitamah. The story was so eventful that it was very difficult to keep pace with the individual events.

The battle between the Kauravas and Pandavas is so well known that it need not be repeated. In the middle of the epic stands The Gita which serves as a lighthouse. It sheds light on the theme of the whole story. The language is so poetic that one floats in its divine stream. Lord Krishna tells us to perform our duties without having any expectations about the rewards.

We should forget the sense of affection as it blurs our minds while performing our duties and meeting out justice. We should strive for excellence in whatever we do. This body is short-lived but the soul is eternal. It never dies. It keeps on changing bodies just as we keep on changing clothes. Fire cannot burn the soul nor can the sword cut it. When death is a must, why should we be afraid of it?

It was this “celestial song” ‘Gita’ that helped Arjuna to perform his duty boldly and fearlessly, keeping his personal affections at bay. The author also tells us that the struggle always continues in our hearts. Whenever we are in doubt about whether we should do something or not, we should seek guidance from The Gita.

The Mahabharata has changed the whole course of my life and I wish that it should be read by everyone. The book is especially recommended for those young people who have yet to begin their careers.

Short Essay On My Favourite Book Panchatantra In Hindi

मेरी प्रिय पुस्तक | Paragraph on My Favourite Book in Hindi

My Favourite Book

Books are friends who will never abandon you. This saying rings true for me because books have always been there for me. I like to read books. They have the ability to transport us through worlds without requiring us to leave our current location.  Books have the power to transport people all over the world without them having to leave their homes. My parents and teachers always encouraged me to read when I was younger.  Harry Potter, on the other hand, will always be my favourite book.

J.K. Rowling, one of our generation's most eminent writers, wrote the Harry Potter series. These books depict the wizarding world and its operations. J.K. Rowling has done such a good job of painting a picture of this world that it feels real. Despite the fact that the series consists of seven books, I have a personal favourite.  When I first started reading the book, it immediately piqued my interest. Despite having read all of the previous parts, none of the books piqued my interest as much as this one did.

The introduction of the other wizard schools is one of the things about this book that most excites me. The Triwizard Tournament concept is one of the most brilliant ideas I've seen in the Harry Potter series. In addition, some of my favourite characters appear in this book. Rowling's description of that character's aura and personality is simply brilliant. Furthermore, it made me a bigger fan of the series.Despite the fact that the books are set in the world of wizards and magic, the Harry Potter series contains many lessons for young people to learn.

For starters, it teaches us the value of friendship. I've read a lot of books, but I've never come across a friendship like Harry, Hermoine, and Ron's. Throughout the books, these three musketeers stayed together and never gave up. It taught me the importance of having a good friend.Furthermore, the Harry Potter series taught me that no one is perfect. Everyone carries both good and evil within them. This aided me in making better decisions and becoming a better person. We see how even the most flawed characters, such as Snape, had goodness within them. Similarly, even the nicest characters, such as Dumbledore, had flaws. This altered my attitude toward people and made me more considerate.

Finally, these books provided me with hope. They taught me what hope is and that there is light at the end of the tunnel. It gave me the courage to hold on to hope even in the darkest of times, just as Harry had done his entire life. These are some of the most important lessons I took away from Harry Potter. In conclusion, while many films have been made based on the books. Nothing beats the essence and uniqueness of the books. The details and inclusiveness of books cannot be replaced by any other form of media. As a result, The Goblet of Fire is still my favourite book.

My Favourite Book – ‘The Ministry of Utmost Happiness’ by Arundhati Roy.

‘Published in 2017, this book marks the return of Arundhati Roy to the fictional world, after a long hiatus following her acclaimed debut novel, ‘The God of Small Things,’ which won the Man Booker Prize in 1997. ‘The Ministry of Utmost Happiness is a complex and sprawling narrative that weaves together multiple storylines and characters.’

‘This novel is notable for its rich prose and the vivid imaginary skills of the author where she has portrayed the complexities and diversities in Indian society. The main character, Anjum, is a transgender woman who creates a home for herself in a graveyard in Delhi.’

My Favourite Book – ‘The God of Small Things’ by Arundhati Roy.

‘The God of Small Things was the debut novel of Arundhati Roy, published in 1997 and won the Man Booker Prize for fiction. This novel is set in the Indian State of Kerala and weaves a complex narrative, where different themes such as family, love, social injustice and the consequences of societal norms are explored.’

‘This novel employs a non-linear narrative structure, adding to its complexities. This book alternates between two time periods: the main storyline of 1960 and a later period of 1993. This novel revolves around the lives of fraternal twins Rahel and Estha, who were separated after a traumatic incident when they were kids. Their relationship is central to the story, and the narrative explores their individual struggles and the enduring bond between them.’

I consider this novel my favourite because it delves into the rigid caste system and social norms that pervade Indian society, particularly in Kerala. It is set against the backdrop of significant political and historical events in India, such as the rise of communism and the influence of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Kerala. This is a beautifully written emotionally powerful novel that tackles themes of love, loss and social injustice.

My Favourite Book – Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear

James Clear has resonated with readers all over the world with his book, offering profound insights into the art and science of habit formation. His words stand out not only for their clarity but also for their practicality, offering readers with actionable strategies to make lasting positive changes in their lives.’

‘This book talks about a psychological framework, the habit loop, which comprises of 4 components: cue, craving, response and reward. Each of these components tells you how habits are formed, maintained, and, ultimately, transformed. This book helps in understanding the mechanics of the habit loop, giving readers a gain to valuable tool to reshare their behaviours intentionally.’

‘One of the standout principles of this book is the ‘two-minute rule’ where the author wants us to build new habits so easily that they can be completed in under two minutes.  This approach paves the way for consistent and gradual progress. It doesn’t matter what your objectives are, but with his rule, you can transform what seems impossible and attain your daily goals and rituals.’

‘The other focus of this book is towards the environment and the crucial role it plays in shaping our behaviours. James Clear demonstrates that whether things are small or big, physical or social, they can have a profound impact on our habits. A personal can create an environment that supports their desired changes by distinguishing between the obvious and undesirable changes.’

‘The importance of continuous progress and improvement is the key message here. James introduces the concept of the ‘plateau of latent potential,’ where progress may be slow in the beginning but once there is consistency, it leads to remarkable growth with unwavering commitment.’

  • Essay on my favourite book

For me, I like to read detective stories that tell of serial crimes and that are solved gradually and intelligently.

I loved this kind of book when my dad gave me my first detective story for my sixth birthday.

It was a simple and uncomplicated story but I loved it, so I started buying the series book after book. My room has become full of stories and every day I read a lot of them and I can’t get enough of them even if I read them several times.

Each of us has a specific type of book that he prefers to read, and his love for this type is due to things related to him and not others.

A person may love to read scary horror books, despite their cruelty, but he does not hesitate to read them. People’s love of horror is due to their love of intense excitement and their strong curiosity.

As for people who are characterized by gentle and loving characters, we find that they prefer reading romance stories.

My favorite book is the picture book about animals. I like to know the nature of each animal in terms of the environment in which it lives and in terms of food. I like to read strange information about animals that a large number of people do not know.

And of course, I read about rare animals in order to know the remaining numbers of them and how to preserve the existing ones. I have seen thousands of animals among the pages of books, and learned a lot of interesting information about them.

Because of this beautiful hobby, I was able to learn general information about many things in life.Nowadays, I have moved from reading books about animals to reading books about planets and space. Space has become like magic to me. Every time I learn about one of its secrets, another one is waiting for me.

I loved the bush when I read the famous story about the family whose ship sank in the sea, and unfortunately only the father, mother and baby survived the ship’s passengers.

After they were tossed on the shore of an uninhabited island, the father built a wooden house on top of the trees to get away from predators.

But they were attacked by a wild tiger that could climb trees, and killed the father and the mother, but the father managed to put the baby in a tightly closed wooden box, which prevented the tiger from reaching it.

On the next day, the huge female gorilla who had lost her child due to the same tiger came. She heard the child’s screaming inside the box. She did not leave him and walk away, but she took him out and took him with her to the herd of gorillas.

The adult gorillas refused to raise the human child among their children, but the mother gorilla insisted on adopting him and defended him with all her might.

Indeed, the child has grown up among the herd of gorillas, has learned their skills, and is now walking on all fours just like them.

One day, he found some people exploring the island with a nice girl, which made him get close to her and become her close friend, but those who were with her attacked the gorillas and killed their leader and captured the rest of the herd.

In the end, the jungle man was able to free his family from the gorillas and return them to their homeland in peace, and refused to leave the island because of his love of living with gorillas and his lack of acceptance of humans and their hostile actions towards animals.

My favourite book paragraph

I’ve loved sea creatures since I’ve been going with my dad on fishing trips. I’ve seen different types of fish, but would have liked to see more.

I have been able to see a number of other marine organisms of different shapes and sizes, by reading books specialized in marine organisms.

I have read about whales of all kinds. She learned about the types of sharks, their nature, and how they hunt their prey.

I have learned through reading books of all kinds that living things have a special nature, which we must know before we approach them.

One of the most important of these traits is the nature of predation, which is essential for organisms, especially at the time of hunger and danger.

My favourite book essay in English

I am a person who loves to read and therefore I own many types of books, but the most preferred type is books that talk about different peoples and different cultures.

From these books I learned about cultures that I never imagined existed. There are several primitive peoples living on the islands and relying on fishing, some of them catch fish using primitive traps or catch them with their hands.

On these islands, children learn to swim and scuba dive at a very young age, so that they can fetch their own food.

This story is not the only story that talks about people and their strangeness, but there are thousands of amazing stories, which will not be easy to identify and live in their details except through books of various kinds.

Therefore, children must learn to read from a young age, so that they acquire skills and learn about other cultures, so what they know will benefit them in forming their personalities.

My favourite hobby essay

My favorite hobby is horse riding. I started this hobby when I was five years old. And it all started when I went to visit my grandfather’s horse farm.

My grandfather owns a large number of trained horses which he uses in international and local races. My grandfather told me that the whole family rides horses at a young age, and that I should learn like them.

At first I was afraid of the horse because of its small size and my small size, and I was afraid of falling from the top of the horse, but with time I got used to the horses and became my best friend. When the horse sees me from afar, it rushes to take the sugar and welcomes me.

I hope to become a distinguished knight in the future and to participate in international competitions, and I hope to own several horses of my own.

I learned how to handle a horse and how to train it from my grandfather.I will not stop this hobby because it is a fun hobby and makes me very proud.

My favorite book paragraph

My favorite book is a science book about piranha. It is a fish with a different nature from the rest of the fish in the world. It lives in the Amazon River, but has teeth as sharp as a saw.

If a tourist makes a mistake and gets into the water, he is attacked by a swarm of piranha, stripping his bones of meat and leaving him an empty skeleton.

The same is true for the animals and birds that go into the water in the places where the piranha fish are.But there are some people who may not know the importance of reading.

We must alert them to its great importance because it is not just a hobby that wastes time, or just a summer activity that we do to entertain ourselves. But reading can save a person’s life.

When he reads about a wild animal like a piranha, he will know where it lives and what its danger is, and therefore he will warn before going into the water with it, which will save his life. As for the ignorant person, he will go down to the water without any thought, which will expose him to attack.

My favourite story book essay

When I was in the early stages of my life I learned to read and write well, which encouraged my mother to buy me some comics.

I read a special story in my childhood which made it stick in my mind and become my favorite story. This story is the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This story was very popular and the story was made in several successful films.

It talks about a king and queen who have a girl with skin as white as snow, so the queen named her Snow White.

But after a while the queen dies and the king marries an evil witch.

The evil witch is chasing after the girl with the aim of killing her, because of her jealousy of the girl’s beauty, she sends after her a hunter to kill her.

But the hunter takes pity on the girl and refuses to kill her, but tells her to enter the forest and not return to the palace.

He tells her to go into the forest and not go back to the palace

Indeed, the little girl goes to the forest to enter the house of the seven dwarfs, and while she is there, she eats their food and sleeps on their beds. And when they come back they love her and ask her to live with them.

Indeed, she continues to live with them until the witch reaches her and poisons her with a poisoned piece of apple. In the end, the dwarves put the dead princess in a secluded place and go to visit her on a daily basis.

But the surprise happens when a prince passes by chance and falls in love with the princess. Then he moves her, and a piece of apple comes out of her throat, and he marries her amid celebrations of the dwarves.

My favorite book essay in English

I read a children’s book when I was young and loved it so much that it became my favorite book. The book was in my uncle’s library, and what caught my eye was the cover. The wrapper had a little wooden baby with a long, thin nose.

I asked my uncle about the story of the wooden baby, and he gave me the book to read.

The story was about an old man who works in carpentry, but is lonely because he has no children. And one day he decided to make a wooden kid and he wished, to talk to him.

Indeed, he sculpted the child and slept wishing he would wake up to find him moving and talking.

The child moved and the man was very happy.

The child happily spent several years with the carpenter, but the child began to lie causing his nose to grow longer after each lie. The carpenter kept trying to convince the child to stop lying, but he failed.

One day, the child met a witch who told him that if he stopped lying, he would turn into a real child.

Indeed, he stopped lying and turned into a real child.

Essay on my favourite book in 150 words

The kind that I like are scientific encyclopedias that provide a large amount of scientific and cultural information.

There are several types of these encyclopedias, such as those that talk about space. I used to go to the school library and found several encyclopedias describing the space in a detailed way.

I have read about planets and their shapes and everything related to them. I read about the moon and learned important information about it. And of course I learned about the sun and the stars.

Among the encyclopedias that I have read and have won my admiration are those that talk about dinosaurs.

In this encyclopedia I saw colorful pictures of all kinds of dinosaurs and under each picture the name was written.

These dinosaurs lived on Earth before humans descended on it. I got to know their types, some of which feed on herbs. There is a type of dinosaur that feeds on meat and is one of the most dangerous species. As for flying dinosaurs, they are like birds and have wings, and for food they hunt small animals in size.

Favourite book essay

Each of us has a certain type of book that he prefers to read more than others, and this type may be related to study or just entertainment.

As for me, I prefer to read horror stories that talk about ghosts. I got hooked on this type of book when my dad bought me a book with the story of the ghost hunters.

The book was about a group of people who believed in ghosts, which made them found a company to catch pesky ghosts.

Indeed, people began to flock to the company, which enabled them to catch several types of ghosts.

The funny thing about the story is that they got to know five evil ghosts and were finding it very difficult to catch them.

But fortunately for them, they found a ghost who is friendly and does not like to do evil towards humans. So they befriended him and made a pact with him to help them catch evil ghosts.

And this is what happened, where he managed to deceive and imprison them until the ghost hunters came and took them to the prison designated for evil ghosts, which attack humans and cause them to fear and force them to leave their homes.

My favourite book topic

My favorite book is the type that talks about history. I like to learn about people’s history. I started reading history when I found a book on the history of ancient Egypt.

In this book I got acquainted with the great kings of each ruling family. I read about mummification and its secrets, which baffled the world so far.

And of course, I read about the pyramids and the engineering secrets that scientists discovered by examining the pyramids.

I also read about pharaonic temples of all kinds, which are characterized by a large number of secrets that scientists have not solved despite modern technology.

Because of my love for this type of interesting books, I decided to go on a tour of all the countries I read about and their valuable effects.

I will definitely start traveling to Egypt, so that I can see all the famous monuments that amazed me. My trip to Egypt will include several places, including Luxor and Aswan. I must go to visit Giza, where there are the three pyramids and the Sphinx.

My favourite book essay 250 words

Because of my love for the game of chess, I buy a large number of books that talk about this game. Through books, I learned a lot about this game and its origins. In the books I got to know the best players in the world, and I knew how many matches they had won.

Through the book, I knew that the best chess player in the world was Kasparov, who had never lost a chess match in his life.

But in the end it was defeated after several attempts by artificial intelligence engineers. They have developed a computer that plays chess professionally.

Indeed, the computer was able to defeat the world champion after he did a simple trick that made him confused and lost.

This movement made by the computer to deceive the player was entered by the programmer, who was able to program the machine with an artificial intelligence system that makes it behave in certain situations like humans and not like a machine.

This is what drew my attention to this match and made me talk about it in front of you today. And this kind of new technological science will conquer the world in the next few years, completely changing the shape of the world.

And people wonder, will technological development be in the interest of humans, or will it cause them to be eliminated? This is what we will know from experience, not assumption.

Short essay on my favourite book

I live in a family that loves to read and therefore in our house there is a big library, where there are all kinds of books.

One of the most beautiful and closest books to my heart is psychology books, which talk about various types of mental illness. I read my first book in this field when I was ten years old.

What I liked about psychology books is that they are incredibly interesting, as they make the reader motivated to read because of the amazing nature of man.

Because of my love for this field and my constant reading I loved this field and will continue my studies with the purpose of studying psychiatry, so that I can help patients recover.

Write a paragraph on my favourite book

For me my favorite book is the one with crime mysteries. I love the detective series who tracks down crime leads and eventually solves the mystery.

This type of book is full of suspense and fun, which increases the secretion of adrenaline in the body and makes you feel happy.

Especially if the crimes are dangerous and strange, such as using magic to complete them or using supernatural powers.

There are also crimes committed by a serial killer, which gives her more suspense, as she tries to find out what the victims have in common until the case is solved and the next victim is rescued.

Because of my reading of this type of book, I learned a lot of information about the human body and about anatomy.

So I hope to become a doctor who specializes in dissecting corpses to find out the cause of death.

Or I could work as a crime investigator, especially murders that need to be decoded by examining the body and the crime scene.

My favorite story book essay

I really like stories because I used to go to the library 3 times a week to do my favorite hobby which is reading. I have read many stories, some of which are romantic, about a princess who is waiting for a prince who will come on his white horse to marry her and live happily together.

There is a kind of science fiction story that talks about space and aliens. This type of story is one of the most interesting and is read by a large number of people. Especially the stories that talk about the abduction of some humans by aliens.

Ponderings: What is Your Favorite Book and Why?

Hey there, fabulous bookworms! I’m absolutely obsessed with reading—no surprise there. It’s like finding a soulmate when I bump into friends who are also passionate about the literary world. Is there anything better than talking about your favorite book over coffee?

From the moment I could read at age five, I was a voracious reader—no kidding! I used to march to the local library and haul home a stack of books so high it was like my own personal tower of literary joy. I even read the children’s picture book section alphabetically—true story! So, let’s dive into why your all-time favorite book is more than just a collection of pages; it’s a window into your soul, values, and even your life goals.

This article is part of a series of Pondering posts where I asked people the same question and shared their thoughts along with mine.

I know this is an unfair pondering question as picking one book as a favorite is impossible; however, I will say Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse for my one-book recommendation.  I learned much from this book; I researched Buddhism, symbolism, and Carl Jung. The book is a spiritual journey by the main character, Siddhartha, and covers many themes: family, friendship, love, and finding yourself. I get something new from this book every time I read it; a new message finds me as I think about my life, Hesse’s writing, and Siddhartha’s growth.

I first read this as an assignment when I returned to college when my youngest was about one year old. I was worried that I wouldn’t fit in or have anything intelligent to say after years of being home with my children – let’s face it, watching too much children’s television can kill brain cells.  When the unit was over, the professor asked me to present my research, and I was teaching the class about Buddhism, the four noble truths, and the eightfold path, and I was on my journey of growth and enlightenment.

Another insightful book is The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Don Miguel Ruiz. It’s simple and powerful, with striking lessons on love and communication.

Why Your Go-To Book is a Window Into Your Soul

When it comes to revealing the depths of your soul, your go-to book is like your personal mirror, reflecting your hopes, dreams, fears, and so much more. Think about it: the stories that captivate us often touch on themes and experiences that resonate with us on a deeply personal level. Maybe it’s a tale of epic adventure that fuels your wanderlust, or perhaps it’s a coming-of-age story that reminds you of your journey. Elizabeth Gilbert put it perfectly in her book Big Magic: “The universe buries strange jewels deep within us all, and then stands back to see if we can find them.”

The key takeaway is that your favorite book often intersects with your life’s narrative. It may highlight your aspirations, echo your dilemmas, or even offer solutions that feel almost tailor-made for you. The next time you pick up that well-thumbed copy of your all-time favorite book, take a moment to ponder what it truly reveals about you. You might discover a gem of insight that’s been there all along, waiting for you to unearth it.

Incorporating these elements enriches the content and makes it more relatable and insightful. You’re not just talking about books but life, the universe, and everything in between. And isn’t that what great storytelling is all about?

The Impact of Your Favorite Book on Your Life

Understanding the impact of your favorite book on your life is like unlocking a treasure chest of self-awareness. It’s not just about the narrative, characters, or plot twists; it’s about the book’s influence on shaping your perspectives, values, and choices. For some, a favorite book might catalyze change, inspiring new ventures or pivots in career paths. For others, it serves as a comforting emotional anchor, a dependable source of wisdom to revisit in times of chaos or uncertainty.

The incredible part is that this book—or set of books, because hey, who can pick just one?—can be both a mirror and a compass. It reflects who you are while pointing to who you could become. This fascinating dynamic transforms your reading experience from a mere pastime into a lifelong companion that enriches your journey in ways you may not have even realized. The intrigue lies in identifying your favorite book and exploring its long-lasting imprint on your story.

What is Your Favorite Book?

Thoughts from Carol Quinn , author of Follow My Lead

My favorite book is usually the one I happen to be reading. At the moment, I’m rereading the History of Love  by Nicole Krauss.  It’s a lyrical story about love and loss—beautifully written. For me, this book is a reminder of why I love to write: to touch hearts, to shine the light on the parts of our humanity that we hide from one another, and to give a picture of our struggles.

“Most people…are like a falling leaf that drifts and turns in the air, flutters, and falls to the ground. But a few others are like stars which travel one defined path: no wind reaches them, they have their guide and path within themselves.” Hermann Hesse

Thoughts from Shannon Fitzpatrick:

My favorite book is My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult. I remember hearing all about it in sixth grade, but my mom told me I wasn’t old enough to read it. I had to wait three long years until I was given the nod of approval. It was right after Christmas, and my brother took me to Borders, and I bought my copy even though my mom had one.

I believe that books have memories from when you read them, and I wanted this one to be filled with memories. I sat down and read it all in one day. It was the first book to make me cry. All these things make the book unique: waiting, having it be mine, and making me cry, which is not easy.

Thoughts from Rheda Wilson-Duff :

“So many on my list, but my favorite book of all time is Approval Addiction by Joyce Meyer. In my not-too-distant past, I had a severe need for everyone to like me. I would do anything for approval. This book gave me insight, hope, and solutions.”

Here are some other favorite books to add to your “to-be-read” (TBR) pile:

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

Practical Magic (and the whole series) by Alice Hoffman

Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun, and Be Your Own Perso n by Shonda Rhimes

My favorite book is Pillars of the Earth, by Ken Follett. It was made into an okay mini-series. In fact, I’d optioned it shortly after it came out and tried to make it myself but it was during a dormant period for mini-series when they were ONLY making 4-hour mini’s and Pillars needed at least 8.

The story of Pillars isn’t one you’d immediately think of as involving as it centers around the building of a church in the Middle Ages. But, what I loved so much was being transported to a time and place with such vivid characters and intrigue.

I have so little “free reading” time these days. I loved when I read great series of books like “The Winds of War” and “War and Remembrance,” when I read aloud the first four Harry Potter books to my boys, and so many others!

I have’t read that Bruce, it sounds interesting. Have you read Brunelleschi’s Dome about the building of the Dome in Florence? You might really like it. I love historical reading and being transported to another time and place. I will definitely check out your book suggestion.

I don’t have as much free reading time either but I am trying to carve it back into my schedule. It is worth the effort. Thanks for sharing with me! Peggy

No, but I’ll have to read those! I filmed ON the Dome – a pilot for a series. We did a chase across the top, at night, with thousands of Italians watching! Very cool…but not quite as cool as when we continued the chase on the Tower of Pisa!

I love “Little Women” I have read this book seven times and can always find something new in its language or story that I missed. I believe it has everything a book should have. Love, family, sadness, togetherness, even a bit of suspense a few times.

I read the Little Women series with my Mom and sister so long ago. I need to re-read that as well. I really respect Louisa May Alcott for having to work so hard as a women writer.

Thanks for sharing Debbie!

Ah great memories of reading Little Women with my mom and sister. I need to re-read that again. I always admired Louisa May Alcott for forging the way for women writers when it was so difficult. Truly a great American author.

Hard to pick an absolute favorite, but I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb really resonates with me.  Great story about brothers, family history, trials of life.  My favorite new book is Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes.  It’s a fictional Vietnam war novel based on the true experiences of the author. It is a war book that really brings out the humanity of the young men involved in the war.

Hi Curtis, I agree – it is hard to pick just one favorite book. I have not read Wally Lamb yet but his books are popular. I will have to check it out!

“Pillars of the Earth” by Ken Follette.  It is just one of those epic reads that you cannot put down.  I have gifted the book to countless friends and family…all with very different tastes and interests.  100% gave the same feedback.  They could not put the book down, read it straight through and were emotionally spent at the end.

I met my wife over a conversation about “On The Road” by Jack Kerouac.  So goes without saying that is also epic in a number of ways!

Great post Peg.  Appreciate you!

PS – Wonderful photos!

“Desperaux” by Kate DiCamillo. A book which depicts human nature using fun and wise characters from a children point of view.

Mines probably The Book Thief by Marcus Zuzack. Its about a girl living in Nazi, Germany during World War 2 but its in the perspective of Death. Its a magnificent story filled with lyrical prose and beautiful characters.

It’s very hard to choose just one, but I would say my favorite book is “Love in the Time of Cholera,” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I loved most of Marquez’s books and my favorite genre remains magical realism, which is so common in South-American literature. I often read Isabel Allende, Mario Vargas Llosa or Julio Cortazar, they are all great. I’ve only read “Steppenwolf” by Hesse and “Siddhartha” is on my list, too!

Favorite Book Essay: The Most Engaging Book You Have Ever Read

The world is moving faster more than ever. Science and technology are progressively growing with discoveries people never thought of are possible five years ago. While they try to catch up on the world’s pace in development, they tend to forget the important things and lose focus of what matters most in life. People are becoming more materialistic, appreciating huge bank accounts rather than quality time with their loved ones. But humans weren’t considered to be the smartest form of organisms just to live in a stagnant pattern of working, paying the bills, and sleeping.

Rick Warren’s The Purpose Driven Life helps people find the reason to live and gives an answer to the question “Why on Earth am I here for?”

The popular book has sold over 32 million copies which makes it a blockbuster Christian book of all time. Publishers Weekly even declared it to be the “Bestselling non-fiction hardback book in history.”

The Purpose Driven Life is a self-help book journal which takes its readers to a 40-day spiritual expedition and devotion to finding their relevance. The book is divided into sections, which the reader takes on once a day for 40 days. Each chapter has a different interesting topic to look forward to. The style Warren used in writing is very appealing because readers will hang on to it on a daily basis until they finish the last page.

It’s not the only tango which is made perfect with a partner. This book could also be learned with someone close to heart – a spouse, a friend, or a churchmate. At the end of each section, there is a portion for reflection. Both readers can write their sentiments side by side on the space provided in the journal. Consequently, the tandem can talk and share their feelings with one another, and possibly impact their own insights in addition to Warren’s. This book makes the reader feel that he is not alone and there is always someone he can talk to – God and his loved ones. No wonder they keep a tight grip at the edge of the book cover.

The Purpose Driven Life has been helpful to people suffering from depression. Michael Phelps, the famous Olympic swimmer, disclosed that this book turned his life around and saved him from committing suicide. He realized his own identity beyond just being a swimmer. He found hope and overcame his personal problems by discovering God’s plan for his life. His story is just one of the many lives that were rescued and inspired by this book.

Warren used various verses on the Bible to back up his claims and advice. Through his book, people were brought to light. They learned the truth about why God made people. It fuels the soul by empowering self-importance.

The Purpose Driven Life answers more life questions than it originally intends to address. It’s educating, inspiring, and motivating. It is food for the mind, the heart, and the spirit. It’s a book you should always keep by your bedside.

What Is Your Favorite Book? and Other Dreaded Questions

' src=

Sarah Rahman

As a recent college graduate who studied English just so she could read more books, Sarah spends most of her time devouring whatever catches her fancy, from classics to young adult reads. She aspires to write a novel someday. When not reading or talking about books, she can be found hiking in the woods or dancing alone in her room. Now, for that cup of tea she was making . . .

View All posts by Sarah Rahman

As a self-proclaimed avid reader, I inevitably get asked the dreaded question: “What is your favorite book?” Of course, if I’m speaking to a fellow reader who is sensitive about this question, I get in a more acceptable form: “What are your favorite books or authors?”

Either way it’s framed, it is a big question. As a novice to this conversation, I would fumble for a moment before talking about the latest book that I loved. Now, I have a more seasoned approach: I have answers prepared. My go-to book is Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre . It’s a classic, and usually wards off further inquiries. On the off chance my conversation partner has similar tastes, I already know I have a friend. It’s a win-win, as far as I’m concerned.

Jane Eyre cover

The truth, however, is not that simple. Don’t get me wrong, Jane Eyre has my whole heart. It’s a story that has seen me through good times and bad, whose words simultaneously provide comfort and inspire wonder. I know it like a familiar landscape, all the fonder for the number of times my eyes have run over it. I know how it begins, the places to anticipate pain or happiness with the steadiness of knowing where the story will take me.

However, it isn’t the only story I love. How can it be when there are so many captivating voices and stories out there? The question now is, how to decide? What makes a book a favorite?

For me, there isn’t one specific reason that I call a book my favorite. Or rather, no one reason that would apply across the board. There are some stories that stayed with me. Elena Ferrante’s My Brilliant Friend combined grit, ambition, and friendship in one sweep. Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Namesake was the first time I read about South Asian characters in a novel.

Others found me at a difficult time. Northanger Abbey made me laugh and Song of Achilles got me out of a reading slump. Still others I love only because I associate a certain period of my life with them. The Darkest Powers series by Kelley Armstrong kept me company in high school, and I cannot think of Kafka on the Shore without thinking of sophomore of college and reading under the sun.

educated book cover

I am tempted to say that all my favorites have been read more than once, but again, this isn’t strictly true. I’ve read Morrison’s Beloved once, but it was enough to blow me away. When I branched out into new genres, I found new gems. Ocean Vuong’s Night Sky with Exit Wounds inspired a love of contemporary poetry while Tara Westover’s Educated proved that real life can be narrated just as compellingly as fiction. What can be said about all my favorites is that I always look for more from the author, in hopes of discovering yet another book to add to the shelf.

My favorites shelf has evolved over time. My heart is clearly a fickle lover. If you asked me what my favorites were in high school, you would get a slew of YA fiction, a lot of which I’ve revisited since then. I turned to literary fiction during my first two years of college before letting loose in my third year and reading a little of everything. Now my tastes range across genres and I’m all the more grateful for it.

My reasons for selecting a book as my favorite are entirely personal. I’m sure there are others who have widely different reasons for falling in love with a book, just as there are those who found themselves nodding along to this article.

So, fellow reader, what is your favorite book?

How to Write a Literary Analysis Essay | A Step-by-Step Guide

Published on January 30, 2020 by Jack Caulfield . Revised on August 14, 2023.

Literary analysis means closely studying a text, interpreting its meanings, and exploring why the author made certain choices. It can be applied to novels, short stories, plays, poems, or any other form of literary writing.

A literary analysis essay is not a rhetorical analysis , nor is it just a summary of the plot or a book review. Instead, it is a type of argumentative essay where you need to analyze elements such as the language, perspective, and structure of the text, and explain how the author uses literary devices to create effects and convey ideas.

Before beginning a literary analysis essay, it’s essential to carefully read the text and c ome up with a thesis statement to keep your essay focused. As you write, follow the standard structure of an academic essay :

  • An introduction that tells the reader what your essay will focus on.
  • A main body, divided into paragraphs , that builds an argument using evidence from the text.
  • A conclusion that clearly states the main point that you have shown with your analysis.

Table of contents

Step 1: reading the text and identifying literary devices, step 2: coming up with a thesis, step 3: writing a title and introduction, step 4: writing the body of the essay, step 5: writing a conclusion, other interesting articles.

The first step is to carefully read the text(s) and take initial notes. As you read, pay attention to the things that are most intriguing, surprising, or even confusing in the writing—these are things you can dig into in your analysis.

Your goal in literary analysis is not simply to explain the events described in the text, but to analyze the writing itself and discuss how the text works on a deeper level. Primarily, you’re looking out for literary devices —textual elements that writers use to convey meaning and create effects. If you’re comparing and contrasting multiple texts, you can also look for connections between different texts.

To get started with your analysis, there are several key areas that you can focus on. As you analyze each aspect of the text, try to think about how they all relate to each other. You can use highlights or notes to keep track of important passages and quotes.

Language choices

Consider what style of language the author uses. Are the sentences short and simple or more complex and poetic?

What word choices stand out as interesting or unusual? Are words used figuratively to mean something other than their literal definition? Figurative language includes things like metaphor (e.g. “her eyes were oceans”) and simile (e.g. “her eyes were like oceans”).

Also keep an eye out for imagery in the text—recurring images that create a certain atmosphere or symbolize something important. Remember that language is used in literary texts to say more than it means on the surface.

Narrative voice

Ask yourself:

  • Who is telling the story?
  • How are they telling it?

Is it a first-person narrator (“I”) who is personally involved in the story, or a third-person narrator who tells us about the characters from a distance?

Consider the narrator’s perspective . Is the narrator omniscient (where they know everything about all the characters and events), or do they only have partial knowledge? Are they an unreliable narrator who we are not supposed to take at face value? Authors often hint that their narrator might be giving us a distorted or dishonest version of events.

The tone of the text is also worth considering. Is the story intended to be comic, tragic, or something else? Are usually serious topics treated as funny, or vice versa ? Is the story realistic or fantastical (or somewhere in between)?

Consider how the text is structured, and how the structure relates to the story being told.

  • Novels are often divided into chapters and parts.
  • Poems are divided into lines, stanzas, and sometime cantos.
  • Plays are divided into scenes and acts.

Think about why the author chose to divide the different parts of the text in the way they did.

There are also less formal structural elements to take into account. Does the story unfold in chronological order, or does it jump back and forth in time? Does it begin in medias res —in the middle of the action? Does the plot advance towards a clearly defined climax?

With poetry, consider how the rhyme and meter shape your understanding of the text and your impression of the tone. Try reading the poem aloud to get a sense of this.

In a play, you might consider how relationships between characters are built up through different scenes, and how the setting relates to the action. Watch out for  dramatic irony , where the audience knows some detail that the characters don’t, creating a double meaning in their words, thoughts, or actions.

Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.

Your thesis in a literary analysis essay is the point you want to make about the text. It’s the core argument that gives your essay direction and prevents it from just being a collection of random observations about a text.

If you’re given a prompt for your essay, your thesis must answer or relate to the prompt. For example:

Essay question example

Is Franz Kafka’s “Before the Law” a religious parable?

Your thesis statement should be an answer to this question—not a simple yes or no, but a statement of why this is or isn’t the case:

Thesis statement example

Franz Kafka’s “Before the Law” is not a religious parable, but a story about bureaucratic alienation.

Sometimes you’ll be given freedom to choose your own topic; in this case, you’ll have to come up with an original thesis. Consider what stood out to you in the text; ask yourself questions about the elements that interested you, and consider how you might answer them.

Your thesis should be something arguable—that is, something that you think is true about the text, but which is not a simple matter of fact. It must be complex enough to develop through evidence and arguments across the course of your essay.

Say you’re analyzing the novel Frankenstein . You could start by asking yourself:

Your initial answer might be a surface-level description:

The character Frankenstein is portrayed negatively in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein .

However, this statement is too simple to be an interesting thesis. After reading the text and analyzing its narrative voice and structure, you can develop the answer into a more nuanced and arguable thesis statement:

Mary Shelley uses shifting narrative perspectives to portray Frankenstein in an increasingly negative light as the novel goes on. While he initially appears to be a naive but sympathetic idealist, after the creature’s narrative Frankenstein begins to resemble—even in his own telling—the thoughtlessly cruel figure the creature represents him as.

Remember that you can revise your thesis statement throughout the writing process , so it doesn’t need to be perfectly formulated at this stage. The aim is to keep you focused as you analyze the text.

Finding textual evidence

To support your thesis statement, your essay will build an argument using textual evidence —specific parts of the text that demonstrate your point. This evidence is quoted and analyzed throughout your essay to explain your argument to the reader.

It can be useful to comb through the text in search of relevant quotations before you start writing. You might not end up using everything you find, and you may have to return to the text for more evidence as you write, but collecting textual evidence from the beginning will help you to structure your arguments and assess whether they’re convincing.

To start your literary analysis paper, you’ll need two things: a good title, and an introduction.

Your title should clearly indicate what your analysis will focus on. It usually contains the name of the author and text(s) you’re analyzing. Keep it as concise and engaging as possible.

A common approach to the title is to use a relevant quote from the text, followed by a colon and then the rest of your title.

If you struggle to come up with a good title at first, don’t worry—this will be easier once you’ve begun writing the essay and have a better sense of your arguments.

“Fearful symmetry” : The violence of creation in William Blake’s “The Tyger”

The introduction

The essay introduction provides a quick overview of where your argument is going. It should include your thesis statement and a summary of the essay’s structure.

A typical structure for an introduction is to begin with a general statement about the text and author, using this to lead into your thesis statement. You might refer to a commonly held idea about the text and show how your thesis will contradict it, or zoom in on a particular device you intend to focus on.

Then you can end with a brief indication of what’s coming up in the main body of the essay. This is called signposting. It will be more elaborate in longer essays, but in a short five-paragraph essay structure, it shouldn’t be more than one sentence.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is often read as a crude cautionary tale about the dangers of scientific advancement unrestrained by ethical considerations. In this reading, protagonist Victor Frankenstein is a stable representation of the callous ambition of modern science throughout the novel. This essay, however, argues that far from providing a stable image of the character, Shelley uses shifting narrative perspectives to portray Frankenstein in an increasingly negative light as the novel goes on. While he initially appears to be a naive but sympathetic idealist, after the creature’s narrative Frankenstein begins to resemble—even in his own telling—the thoughtlessly cruel figure the creature represents him as. This essay begins by exploring the positive portrayal of Frankenstein in the first volume, then moves on to the creature’s perception of him, and finally discusses the third volume’s narrative shift toward viewing Frankenstein as the creature views him.

Some students prefer to write the introduction later in the process, and it’s not a bad idea. After all, you’ll have a clearer idea of the overall shape of your arguments once you’ve begun writing them!

If you do write the introduction first, you should still return to it later to make sure it lines up with what you ended up writing, and edit as necessary.

The body of your essay is everything between the introduction and conclusion. It contains your arguments and the textual evidence that supports them.

Paragraph structure

A typical structure for a high school literary analysis essay consists of five paragraphs : the three paragraphs of the body, plus the introduction and conclusion.

Each paragraph in the main body should focus on one topic. In the five-paragraph model, try to divide your argument into three main areas of analysis, all linked to your thesis. Don’t try to include everything you can think of to say about the text—only analysis that drives your argument.

In longer essays, the same principle applies on a broader scale. For example, you might have two or three sections in your main body, each with multiple paragraphs. Within these sections, you still want to begin new paragraphs at logical moments—a turn in the argument or the introduction of a new idea.

Robert’s first encounter with Gil-Martin suggests something of his sinister power. Robert feels “a sort of invisible power that drew me towards him.” He identifies the moment of their meeting as “the beginning of a series of adventures which has puzzled myself, and will puzzle the world when I am no more in it” (p. 89). Gil-Martin’s “invisible power” seems to be at work even at this distance from the moment described; before continuing the story, Robert feels compelled to anticipate at length what readers will make of his narrative after his approaching death. With this interjection, Hogg emphasizes the fatal influence Gil-Martin exercises from his first appearance.

Topic sentences

To keep your points focused, it’s important to use a topic sentence at the beginning of each paragraph.

A good topic sentence allows a reader to see at a glance what the paragraph is about. It can introduce a new line of argument and connect or contrast it with the previous paragraph. Transition words like “however” or “moreover” are useful for creating smooth transitions:

… The story’s focus, therefore, is not upon the divine revelation that may be waiting beyond the door, but upon the mundane process of aging undergone by the man as he waits.

Nevertheless, the “radiance” that appears to stream from the door is typically treated as religious symbolism.

This topic sentence signals that the paragraph will address the question of religious symbolism, while the linking word “nevertheless” points out a contrast with the previous paragraph’s conclusion.

Using textual evidence

A key part of literary analysis is backing up your arguments with relevant evidence from the text. This involves introducing quotes from the text and explaining their significance to your point.

It’s important to contextualize quotes and explain why you’re using them; they should be properly introduced and analyzed, not treated as self-explanatory:

It isn’t always necessary to use a quote. Quoting is useful when you’re discussing the author’s language, but sometimes you’ll have to refer to plot points or structural elements that can’t be captured in a short quote.

In these cases, it’s more appropriate to paraphrase or summarize parts of the text—that is, to describe the relevant part in your own words:

The conclusion of your analysis shouldn’t introduce any new quotations or arguments. Instead, it’s about wrapping up the essay. Here, you summarize your key points and try to emphasize their significance to the reader.

A good way to approach this is to briefly summarize your key arguments, and then stress the conclusion they’ve led you to, highlighting the new perspective your thesis provides on the text as a whole:

By tracing the depiction of Frankenstein through the novel’s three volumes, I have demonstrated how the narrative structure shifts our perception of the character. While the Frankenstein of the first volume is depicted as having innocent intentions, the second and third volumes—first in the creature’s accusatory voice, and then in his own voice—increasingly undermine him, causing him to appear alternately ridiculous and vindictive. Far from the one-dimensional villain he is often taken to be, the character of Frankenstein is compelling because of the dynamic narrative frame in which he is placed. In this frame, Frankenstein’s narrative self-presentation responds to the images of him we see from others’ perspectives. This conclusion sheds new light on the novel, foregrounding Shelley’s unique layering of narrative perspectives and its importance for the depiction of character.
