I met him on a personal level one day after class when I needed clarification on a topic I had not quite understood. The teacher was kind to me and guided me through it. Since then, he took his own initiative to do follow-ups on me and I became really good in math due to his efforts.

In the classroom, he employs the Eclectic mode of teaching (this is the combination of all the modes of teaching “discussion mode, play way mode, role play mode, question mode” so as to facilitate standard learning).

He comes into the classroom; starts the lecture with a recap of what was discussed in the previous class, gives room for the students to ask questions that arose from the last class, answers them and then starts a new topic.

To start a new topic, he starts with a mind-capturing introduction that attracts the attention of all students. Once he is through with introducing the topic, he gauges our reaction in order for him to know if his students are on the same page with him or left behind.

Then, he moves on to the discussion mode of teaching, whereby he throws questions to his students and accommodates both relevant and irrelevant answers, at the end of this model, he sieves through the answers provided, pick the relevant ones and add his own iota to it, he also always applaud the courage of all who answers his questions.

He moves either into the role play method or the play way method, here he selects students to either act out the lessons from the day’s topic or summarizes what he has taught for the day. The use of this particular mode enlightens the students more on the topic being discussed.

Finally, he moves over to the questions and revision mode, where he personally go through all he has taught over the course of the period. During this mode, he entertains questions from students on their personal areas of difficulties. Occasionally, he gives assignments to back up his teachings.

Students can practice this in class by responding to various essay titles, questions, and prompts, thereby gaining valuable experience breaking these down.

She occasionally awarded us for performing well on tests and examinations. She never overloaded us with homework at home and consistently encouraged us to give the test our best effort since she was very enthusiastic.

She is an inspiration because she strengthens our morality and inspires virtue in us. Her lessons will always be with me and will guide us in choosing the correct course under challenging circumstances. Her nature is one of great love and gentleness, and she will always be the top teacher.

When someone behaves wrongly, she disciplines us and informs the misbehaving youngster. The "Most Admired Teacher" award was given to her this year, which is not surprising.

In her class, I never miss a day. She emphasizes the importance of never thinking negatively and teaches us the belief that she is always by our side.

College Students Not Reading Is an Issue, So Teachers Are Adjusting How Classes Look

When Alden Jones taught her first back-in-person college class during the pandemic, something surprising happened. “Here I am, teaching the same class I’ve taught for 10 years, using the same book and asking the same questions, and my students were dead-silent," says Jones, who teaches literature and creative writing at Emerson College, a private liberal arts school in Boston. "Then I would ask easier questions — silent. So I was like, Okay, I know it’s not me and I know it’s not the book, so it must be you. Like, what is going on here?”

The possible reasons were complicated, she recalls for Teen Vogue. In part, likely “shell-shock” from COVID; in part, as one student told her, an increased fear of judgment by peers or getting something wrong. Or, Jones adds, perhaps “this mentality of ‘Why should I think it through when I could get the answer on my phone?’”

But another large question looms over this story and much of the thinking Jones has been doing in the last few years regarding teaching: Are college students struggling with reading more than they did previously? And, if so, what should educators be doing to help them?

In recent years, Jones has increasingly adjusted her teaching style and syllabi to accommodate what she sees as a decline in students’ reading ability. Her approach involves a “constant dialogue” with her classes, she says. This approach comes with some sacrifices, but as Jones sees it, those are ultimately overshadowed by benefits. “I’d much rather discuss a short story by Julio Cortázar that is extremely dense but only 10 pages long and know that everyone has read the entire 10 pages so that we can talk about the whole work," she explains. "I’d rather do that than teach a 300-page Cortázar novel that maybe one or two students will read entirely.”

Jones is far from alone. While some educators who speak with Teen Vogue say they have not seen a difference in students’ willingness to read, several professors across higher education institutions disagree, echoing worries their peers have expressed online about drops in reading stamina and efficacy among today’s undergraduates. Adam Kotsko, a faculty member of the Shimer Great Books School at North Central College, a private institution in Naperville, Illinois, wrote about the issue for Slate. He tells Teen Vogue that for years he assigned around 25 to 35 pages of reading per session in entry-level classes, but “now it seems like if I write down on my syllabus a 20-page reading, I start to get tense.”

As students return to campus this fall, some humanities professors are wondering whether their students’ learning needs will differ from their counterparts of 20, 10, or even five years ago. As a result they are taking a harder look at some of their instructional practices.

One likely reason behind this recent trend is hardly a secret: As some states rush to ban phone use in schools, more than 70% of high school teachers call cellphones distracting students a “major problem” in classrooms, according to a Pew Research Center survey. John Edwin Mason, a history professor at the University of Virginia who has been teaching in the US since 1990, tells Teen Vogue that his impression is “students are less eager to read, and they’re certainly less eager to read academic writing.” Digital technology and social media have taken a toll on attention spans, he says, adding, “I feel it myself.”

Or as Jeff Dolven, an English professor at Princeton University, puts it: “All of us, the faculty, have noticed that students’ attention spans have diminished. We’ve probably noticed that our own attention spans are under assault and diminishing. And clearly the reason for that is the kind of rapid consumption of media that’s encouraged by having a phone in your pocket.”

Casey Boyle, an associate professor of rhetoric and writing at the University of Texas at Austin, says it's hardly surprising that his colleagues are noticing a drop among today’s students in the reading practices he and his peers grew up with. “What is surprising," he notes, "to be honest with you, is… how few of my colleagues recognize that it’s not really the students’ fault, right? They’re interacting in media ecologies that we never did when we were growing up.”

To some instructors the notion of trimming syllabi or increasingly excerpting assigned reading feels like an insult to the intelligence of students — not to mention their tuition money. Jennifer Frey, a philosophy professor and the dean of the Honors College at the University of Tulsa, says she sees such moves by colleagues as a “tyranny of low expectations.” “It is actually incredibly important that students just read a massive amount,” she tells Teen Vogue. “Reading widely and deeply is incredibly important… in terms of building the skills that are necessary, no matter what you’re going to go on to do.”

At the same time, other educators point to the challenges many students face and urge colleagues to exhibit empathy in constructing their expectations. Antonio Byrd, who teaches writing at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, says that his experience teaching many first-generation college students and those juggling jobs and other personal responsibilities has shown him the importance of accommodating the reality of student lives outside the classroom. “I think it comes down to… priorities,” he says. “By giving them, say, one reading or two readings, they can be a little more deeply engaged with that reading for that week.”

It remains to be seen whether there will be a widespread shift toward educators cutting down on assigned reading. In a range of syllabi from 2009 to this year, shared with Teen Vogue by the English departments at Texas A&M University and the University of Central Florida, the volume of reading asked of students has remained largely comparable. Anecdotally, though, some professors say they are reworking the length of the texts they assign. Jones includes fewer books but more short stories for the same course than she did a decade prior. Dolven and Kotsko both mention being more selective and intentional about what they include on their reading lists.

Whether or not professors choose to change the syllabi themselves, they are facing a host of decisions in building out workable strategies to support their classes in reaching the reading goals they set for them. Says Boyle, “If you want students to be able to read a novel a week, then you’re going to give them some kind of structure to be able to do so."

What that “structure” looks like means many different things for different people. Byrd says that since 2020, right before the pandemic began, he has been putting students into “reading teams,” with each student choosing a couple of the assigned readings for the week and providing their teammates with summaries. He also uses digital annotation tools that enable students to comment online about the reading as they make their way through it and engage with comments from classmates. Kotsko asks students to take photos of their text annotations and submit those as assignments, an approach he says has been working quite well. Boyle encourages his classes to adopt an “ overview procedure ” for reading, understanding how the text is organized and skimming the text’s introduction and conclusion before diving into the core of it.

Says Mason, he has started making requirements for written assignments “much more directive,” designing questions to check whether the students made it through the entire text. (“My assignments used to be much more open-ended,” he notes.) Now he’s thinking of leveling up from that: “I’m very, very much considering going back to quizzes, even though I resented them as a student.”

Reading-check quizzes have worked well in her classes, Jones says, especially as students who do the reading feel grateful for the weekly chance at an easy A.

One question Mason finds himself asking again and again of students struggling with assigned reading: “Do you turn off your phone?” They usually respond with shock — and Mason empathizes. After all, “previous generations didn’t have phones to turn off.”

Dolven talks about the culture of attention and mindfulness that he wants to cultivate in his classes. To him, that doesn’t mean being unreasonable by expecting students to commit to reading for four-hours straight without once looking up; however, putting the phone in another room or even leaving it at home when they go to the library can be a reasonable expectation — and perhaps become a cultural norm to which students can hold one another. “I don’t mean to do that as a complete ‘You should change your life,’” he adds, “but I do want students to have a feeling for what that can be like.”

Dolven also serves on the faculty of the Strother School of Radical Attention , a nonprofit educational group dedicated to cultivating attention, and finds value in working on these skills with and around others. “It makes it quite a bit easier to pay attention, I think, if you’re doing it with a community,” he says.

Similarly, Frey feels that the core ingredient in fostering a commitment to reading in her classes is creating a culture around the practice. That starts with professors actively helping students “understand what’s at stake,” she says. “The biggest problem that students have is a problem of imagination. They’re just not sure how they can do this. You have to help them imagine themselves getting it done.”

A High School English Teacher Reviews FX’s New Show English Teacher

The show raises an important point about how we portray teachers in the media.

About 10 minutes into the first episode of FX’s new show English Teacher , a childhood memory came rushing back …

I’m 8 years old, and we’re watching E.R. as a family. Something happens on the screen—a gurney comes rushing through as people in white lab coats yell—and amid all this drama, I hear my dad, who spent part of his medical residency in an emergency room, groan loudly, “No, you can’t do that !” While my dad knows this is all entertainment, they hit a nerve so close to his real-life experience that it was temporarily hard for him to suspend disbelief.

This is the distinct feeling I had around 10 minutes into the pilot of English Teacher .

The series features Brian Jordan Alvarez as Evan Marquez, a high school English teacher in Austin, Texas. Evan faces the same daily juggling act many of us do: trying to get kids to talk about “unreliable narrators” in a world shaded with fake news and polarized worldviews while managing hot-button topics with young people as they figure out their place in the world. Oh, and someone needs to plan homecoming.

While at first glance, the show’s premise is easy to compare to ABC’s Abbott Elementary , a show beloved by many teachers, English Teacher knows it is on a different network (FX shows tend to be more forthright with cursing and sexual imagery) and considers the teaching profession with a very different lens.

The pilot’s opening conflict centers on a kiss Evan shared with his then-boyfriend and then-fellow teacher Malcolm. A parent complains about the kiss—described at one point as a “peck”—and Evan calls out the seemingly blatant homophobia at play.

Then, in a flashback of the kiss, we learn that it was much more than a peck. It actually included Malcolm grabbing Evan’s backside … in front of a room full of students. It’s an action that, when done in front of kids, I’d argue is incredibly inappropriate, regardless of gender or orientation.

And this is where, like my father, I wanted to yell at the screen, “Oh, Evan, you can’t do that !”

I sat with this moment, trying to figure out why I had struggled. It is fiction, after all. Then, I realized that I had come to the show with unmatched expectations. As most of my adult life has been as a real-life English teacher, I, perhaps unfairly, wanted the “English teacher” on TV to be one we could categorically root for. I wanted a character who showed the most noble side of our struggles.

English Teacher , though, understands that noble portrayals of educators may not be entertaining. Instead, it uses the premise to explore nuanced questions about navigating adulthood in a space inundated with adolescent growing pains. In doing so, the show repeatedly goes in a direction you don’t expect. English Teacher navigates romantic strife, existential dread about the importance of our work, LGBTQ+ issues, and even the occasional slapstick moment (Evan’s open-palm football smack as he hurries across the field made me audibly laugh) in unexpected and, often, very funny ways. The show, in its first three episodes, is less concerned about how teachers shape young minds and more about how bringing together people with this diversity of experiences, values, and age plays out in interesting, often awkward, occasionally tense, and sometimes revelatory ways.

The show raises an interesting question: What, if any, obligation does a piece have to the subjects it portrays?

Several teachers I spoke with found the show very funny, though there are those who feel that, in reaching for a punchline, the show is a caricature of their daily struggles that doesn’t quite grasp the deep sense of care, heartbreak, and joy found in our profession. In a world where educators already feel devalued, does English Teacher ’s flawed main teacher make it even harder to root for teachers overall?

Yet, English Teacher also raises an important point about how we portray teachers in the media overall: They are often either noble, earnest, and endlessly giving, or they are problematic has-beens who abuse their power. English Teacher considers what it means to show a wider range of a teacher’s humanity, as the protagonist refuses both extreme portrayals; instead, Evan is a guy struggling with all the nuanced and complex situations adults face, like being attracted to your coworker or forging occasionally uncomfortable friendships with people you sometimes see more than your own family. He just has to deal with those issues while also trying to get kids to care about Love in the Time of Cholera— no matter how triggering—and help the football players prepare for the Powderpuff Game. If you watch this show hoping for a teacher-hero you can stand behind categorically, that is not Evan. Evan believes himself to be deeply principled, but he is not a faultless teacher. As an educator, he makes bad choices (please background-check your friends before inviting them into your school). He also, though, clearly cares deeply about his students, from his book club to his honest desire to support them. Evan is not always noble, and he is definitely not perfect, but I’m still rooting for him, and I’m rooting for English Teacher as well.

Not-so-great expectations: Students are reading fewer books in English class

Chris Stanislawski didn’t read much in his middle school English classes, but it never felt necessary. Students were given detailed chapter summaries for every novel they discussed, and teachers played audio of the books during class.

Much of the reading material at Garden City Middle School in Long Island was either abridged books, or online texts and printouts, he said.

“When you’re given a summary of the book telling you what you’re about to read in baby form, it kind of just ruins the whole story for you,” said Chris, 14. “Like, what’s the point of actually reading?”

In many English classrooms across America, assignments to read full-length novels are becoming less common. Some teachers focus instead on selected passages — a concession to perceptions of shorter attention spans , pressure to prepare for standardized tests and a sense that short-form content will prepare students for the modern, digital world.

The National Council of Teachers of English acknowledged the shift in a 2022 statement on media education, saying: “The time has come to decenter book reading and essay-writing as the pinnacles of English language arts education.”

The idea is not to remove books but to teach media literacy and add other texts that feel relevant to students, said Seth French, one of the statement’s co-authors. In the English class he taught before becoming a dean last year at Bentonville High School in Arkansas, students engaged with plays, poetry and articles but read just one book together as a class.

“At the end of the day, a lot of our students are not interested in some of these texts that they didn’t have a choice in,” he said.

The emphasis on shorter, digital texts does not sit well with everyone.

Deep reading is essential to strengthen circuits in the brain tied to critical thinking skills, background knowledge — and, most of all, empathy, said Maryanne Wolf, a cognitive neuroscientist at UCLA specializing in dyslexia research.

“We must give our young an opportunity to understand who others are, not through little snapshots, but through immersion into the lives and thoughts and feelings of others,” Wolf said.

At Garden City Middle School, students are required to read several books in their entirety each year, including “Of Mice and Men” and “Romeo and Juliet,” Principal Matthew Samuelson said. Audio versions and summaries are provided as extra resources, he said.

For Chris, who has dyslexia, the audio didn’t make the reading feel more accessible. He just felt bored. He switched this fall to a Catholic school, which his mother feels will prepare him better for college.

Even outside school, students are reading less

There’s little data on how many books are assigned by schools. But in general, students are reading less. Federal data from last year shows only 14% of young teens say they read for fun daily, compared with 27% in 2012.

Teachers say the slide has its roots in the COVID-19 crisis.

“There was a trend, it happened when COVID hit, to stop reading full-length novels because students were in trauma; we were in a pandemic. The problem is we haven’t quite come back from that,” said Kristy Acevedo, who teaches English at a vocational high school in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

This year, she said she won’t accept that students are too distracted to read. She plans to teach time-management strategies and to use only paper and pencils for most of class time.

Other teachers say the trend stems from standardized testing and the influence of education technology . Digital platforms can deliver a complete English curriculum, with thousands of short passages aligned to state standards — all without having to assign an actual book.

“If admins and school districts are judged by their test scores, how are they going to improve their test scores? They’re going to mirror the test as much as possible,” said Karl Ubelhoer, a middle school special education teacher in Tabernacle, New Jersey.

For some students, it’s a struggle to read at all . Only around a third of fourth and eighth graders reached reading proficiency in the 2022 National Assessment of Educational Progress, down significantly from 2019.

Leah van Belle, executive director of the Detroit literacy coalition 313Reads, said when her son read “Peter Pan” in late elementary school, it was too hard for most kids in the class. She laments that Detroit feels like “a book desert.” Her son’s school doesn’t even have a library.

Still, she said it makes sense for English classes to focus on shorter texts.

“As an adult, if I want to learn about a topic and research it, be it personal or professional, I’m using interactive digital text to do that,” she said.

Teachers fit books in with other ‘spinning plates’

Even in well-resourced schools, one thing is always in short supply: time.

Terri White, a teacher at South Windsor High School in Connecticut, no longer makes her honors ninth-grade English class read all of “To Kill a Mockingbird.” She assigns about a third of the book and a synopsis of the rest. They have to move on quickly because of pressure for teachers to cram more into the curriculum, she said.

“It’s like spinning plates, you know what I mean? Like it’s a circus,” she said.

She also assigns less homework because kids’ schedules are so packed with sports, clubs and other activities.

“I maintain rigor. But I’m more about helping students become stronger and more critical readers, writers and thinkers, while taking their social-emotional well-being into account,” she said.

In the long run, the synopsis approach harms students’ critical thinking skills, said Alden Jones, a literature professor at Emerson College in Boston. She assigns fewer books than she once did and gives more quizzes to make sure students do the reading.

“We don’t value the thinking time that we used to have. It’s all time we could be on our phone accomplishing tasks,” she said.

Will Higgins, an English teacher at Dartmouth High School in Massachusetts, said he still believes in teaching the classics, but demands on students’ time have made it necessary to cut back.

“We haven’t given up on ‘Jane Eyre’ and ‘Pride and Prejudice.’ We haven’t given up on ‘Hamlet’ or ‘The Great Gatsby,’″ Higgins said. But he said they have given up assigning others like “A Tale of Two Cities.”

His school has had success encouraging reading through student-directed book clubs, where small groups pick a book and discuss it together. Contemporary authors like John Green and Jason Reynolds have been a big hit.

“It’s funny,” he said. “Many students are saying that it’s the first time in a long time they’ve read a full book .”

Not-so-great expectations: Students are reading fewer books in English class

Much of the reading material at Garden City Middle School in Long Island was either abridged books, or online texts and printouts, he said.

“At the end of the day, a lot of our students are not interested in some of these texts that they didn’t have a choice in,” he said.

The emphasis on shorter, digital texts does not sit well with everyone.

“We must give our young an opportunity to understand who others are, not through little snapshots, but through immersion into the lives and thoughts and feelings of others,” Wolf said.

Even outside school, students are reading less

Teachers say the slide has its roots in the COVID-19 crisis.

This year, she said she won’t accept that students are too distracted to read. She plans to teach time-management strategies and to use only paper and pencils for most of class time.

Still, she said it makes sense for English classes to focus on shorter texts.

“As an adult, if I want to learn about a topic and research it, be it personal or professional, I’m using interactive digital text to do that,” she said.
