Who Is Daniel Radcliffe?

Daniel Radcliffe’s parents initially refused to let him audition for the role of Harry Potter, but a chance meeting with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone director Chris Columbus led to an audition. The books' legions of fans seemed to agree that Radcliffe was perfect as the boy wizard, and he starred in each installment of the immensely successful eight-part film series. Moving on from Harry Potter , the actor performed on Broadway in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying , and showed his versatility via films like Kill Your Darlings and Imperium .

Early Life and Career

The only child of a literary agent and a casting director, Daniel Radcliffe achieved international stardom for his work in the Harry Potter films, adaptations of the beloved best-sellers by J. K. Rowling .

Radcliffe made his acting debut in the 1999 television movie David Copperfield , playing the young version of the title character. He soon landed a role on the big screen in 2001's spy thriller The Tailor of Panama , with Pierce Brosnan and Jamie Lee Curtis .

But even before this film's release, Radcliffe made headlines when he was cast as the lead in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone . The 11-year-old actor joined fellow unknown performers Rupert Grint and Emma Watson as Harry's friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, in one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2001.

'Harry Potter' Fame

Released in November 2001, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone proved to be a box-office smash. Audiences adored Radcliffe as the lead character, an orphaned boy who attends a special school for wizards in training. And the fever surrounding the series simply seemed to grow with each new film.

The eight-film series spanned more than a decade of Radcliffe's life, showing him growing from a tween to a young man. And they provided him with the opportunity to work with many distinguished actors, including Gary Oldman , Alan Rickman , Emma Thompson and Helena Bonham Carter. Radcliffe found Oldman's and Rickman's careers particularly inspiring, telling Backstage that "They never, ever stop trying to get better and working with people they think are going to bring something new out of them."

While some may wonder whether he lost a part of his youth to the fame and success of Harry Potter , Radcliffe seems to have no regrets about the nearly all-consuming project. "They've been great. For the most part I've been happy every single day. And all the times I've been unhappy, it's never been anything to do with Potter ," he told Details magazine.

In later interviews, however, Radcliffe admitted that he had a drinking problem during his teens and occasionally went to film scenes as Harry Potter still drunk from the night before. He has been sober since 2010.

In 2011, the Harry Potter series ended its run with the then-record-breaking Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 , which brought in roughly $168 million during its opening weekend. But with this final film came some sad goodbyes. Radcliffe told Time Out New York what he would miss most about no longer playing Harry Potter: "It's very rare in your career that you get to play an action hero. I'm not the natural frame and stature of an action hero, so I may not get to play one again." He also lamented that the film series did not receive more critical recognition, especially in terms of Academy Award nominations.

Film, TV and Stage Roles

'equus,' 'how to succeed in business'.

Striving to break free of the Harry Potter typecasting, Radcliffe poked fun at his image in Ricky Gervais' comedy series Extras in a 2006 special spot. The following year, Radcliffe showed his dramatic acting chops and more than just a bit of skin on the Broadway stage in Equus , playing a disturbed teenager. In 2011, he took on a very different part—an ambitious young man—in the musical comedy How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying .

'The Woman in Black,' 'A Young Doctor's Notebook'

After hosting Saturday Night Live in early 2012, Radcliffe headlined in the gothic horror thriller The Woman in Black as a widowed lawyer and father who gets mixed up in supernatural trouble. Late that year he starred in the British TV show A Young Doctor's Notebook , his title character shadowed throughout each episode by an older version of himself, played by Jon Hamm . The series was such a success with audiences that it was renewed for a second season.

'Kill Your Darlings,' 'Victor Frankenstein'

Continuing to shed his wizard boy image, Radcliffe portrayed famed Beat poet Allen Ginsberg during his younger years in Kill Your Darlings (2013), alongside Elizabeth Olsen , Michael C. Hall and Ben Foster. In 2014, he took on the role of Ignatius Perrish, the prime suspect in the rape and murder of his girlfriend, in the supernatural thriller Horns . He also starred opposite Zoe Kazan in the rom-com What If , before playing the loyal assistant Igor to the titular doctor of Victor Frankenstein the following year.

'Now You See Me 2,' 'Imperium'

A trio of films released in 2016 showcased Radcliffe's desire to push his range as an actor: He played a corpse-turned-best friend of a suicidal castaway in Swiss Army Man ; appeared as a conniving tech executive in Now You See Me 2 ; and starred as an FBI agent attempting infiltrate a white supremacist group in Imperium . That year the actor also returned to the stage in the off-Broadway production of Privacy .

'Jungle,' 'Miracle Workers'

Along with starring in the 2017 survival thriller Jungle , Radcliffe remained immersed in the theater community with roles in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead in 2017 and The Lifespan of a Fact in 2018. In 2019, he returned to the small screen with a leading role in the anthology comedy series Miracle Workers , playing a low-level angel assistant to God in its first season.

Personal Life

Radcliffe has been dating actress Erin Darke since the two met while filming Kill Your Darlings in 2012.

Daniel Radcliffe Biography

While there may be a number of people in the world who do not recognize the name of Daniel Radcliffe, many millions do know the name of the character he plays: Harry Potter, boy wizard and hero of the best-selling books and blockbuster films. Radcliffe had minimal experience as an actor—he had scored small roles in a television movie and one feature film—when he was chosen, at the age of eleven, to portray on film one of the most popular characters in the history of literature. The Harry Potter films have been record-breaking successes, with each earning close to $1 billion at box offices worldwide. Radcliffe, meanwhile, has gone from childhood to adolescence in front of the camera, a transition that has paralleled the increasingly adult situations Harry must confront. While some observers have wondered whether Radcliffe will mature too quickly to be convincing as the young Harry Potter in the final movies of the series, millions of fans cannot imagine any other actor wearing Harry's trademark round glasses and brandishing his magic wand.

Debut role: monkey

Daniel Jacob Radcliffe was born in London, England, in 1989, less than ten years before the publication of author J. K. Rowling's first Harry Potter novel. His parents, Alan Radcliffe and Marcia Gresham, had been involved in the entertainment industry, both having worked as actors at one point. Alan went on to become a literary agent, helping authors get publishing deals, and Marcia became a casting director, helping filmmakers find performers for film and television roles. Alan would later put his own career on hold to manage that of his son. Daniel Radcliffe, an only child, wanted to be an actor from an early age, but his parents would not allow him to audition for professional roles. He did perform in a school play at age six—cast as a monkey—and enjoyed the experience so much that he continued to ask his parents to let him try out for other shows. When casting began for a film adaptation of nineteenth-century English author Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist, Radcliffe renewed his pleadings with his parents. They initially refused to let him audition, concerned that he was too young. By the time they had changed their minds, it was too late—the film had been cast.

"I like playing someone who is a complete underdog. Harry is a huge hero, but he's not perfect. He's completely awkward around girls. He's not a perfect student. He just scrapes by."

Another opportunity arose when, in the late 1990s, a television production based on another classic Dickens novel, David Copperfield, was searching for an actor. Radcliffe auditioned for the role of the young David Copperfield, and he won the part, thus beginning his career as a professional actor. The film, which was jointly produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) in the United States, aired in 1999 and earned positive reviews. Radcliffe's performance was praised, in a review at the Web site culturevulture.net, for being believable and down-to-earth: "Daniel Radcliffe has a naturalistic presence—rare enough in child actors—and he seems like a real boy." Radcliffe later earned a small role in the feature film The Tailor of Panama (2001), portraying the son of characters played by Geoffrey Rush (1951–) and Jamie Lee Curtis (1958–). Starring Pierce Brosnan (1953–) and directed by John Boorman, the film—which was based on a book by esteemed spy novelist John LeCarré—was modestly successful at the box office and earned the admiration of a number of reviewers.

The Other Kids: Ron and Hermione

While not as front-and-center as Harry Potter is, his best pals Ron and Hermione are nonetheless critical elements of the stories. Rupert Grint plays the part of Ron Weasley, Harry's anxiety-ridden redheaded friend. A huge fan of J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter books, Grint desperately wanted to be chosen to portray Ron when casting began for the first film. He felt they shared much in common: both have red hair and come from big families; both love sweets and are terrified of spiders. His passion paid off when Grint was selected from among thousands of boys to play the part.

Grint was born August 24, 1988, in the small English town of Hertfordshire. He is the eldest of five children and, when not filming, attends an all-boys school. He loves studying science and playing sports and videogames. For his fourteenth birthday, Grint asked for and received a unicycle. He has told reporters that he loves making films and would like to continue in the role of Ron for as long as possible. As for life beyond Harry Potter, Grint speculated in an article in People magazine: "When I was a kid I wanted to be an ice-cream man. That still seems like a cool job."

While she shares Hermione Granger's tendency to be a bit bossy as well as her self-confidence and intense loyalty to friends, Emma Watson also points out that there are many ways in which she departs from the character she portrays. She performs well in school but is not nearly as academically disciplined as her on-screen counterpart. Watson's friends are mostly girls, unlike Hermione's, and she spends her free time hanging out with friends, playing such sports as field hockey and rounders (similar to American softball). Watson pointed out another difference in an interview with Time for Kids: "I am also much more obsessed with clothes and shopping whereas Hermione has no fashion sense at all."

Born April 13, 1990, Watson lives in Oxford, England, home of the famed Oxford University. Before auditioning for the role of Hermione, she had acted in several school plays but had not performed professionally. Just as her costars did, Watson beat out thousands of other hopefuls trying out for her role. She loves the camaraderie on the set, joining in with her costars to play pranks on the other actors. In an article for the Asia Africa Intelligence Wire, Watson insisted that her life has not changed dramatically since winning the part of Hermione: "I mean, obviously I'm recognized on the way from home a lot more and, let's face it, I have an action figure of myself. But apart from that I'm just trying to keep my life as normal as possible."

When Curtis, Radcliffe's costar and screen mom in The Tailor of Panama, initially met the young actor, she made a connection between him and the ultrapopular character Harry Potter, immediately imagining Radcliffe portraying the boy wizard in the yet-to-be-made first film. She told Entertainment Weekly in 2000: "The first time I laid eyes on this kid, I said, 'He's Harry Potter. He should be Harry Potter.' He's the perfect choice." The man chosen to direct that upcoming film, Chris Columbus, also had his eye on Radcliffe, having seen the boy's performance in David Copperfield. Concerned about the intensity of attention their son would certainly receive if he portrayed Harry Potter, Radcliffe's parents at first declined. Then one evening the Radcliffes, accompanied by their son, ran into their friend David Heyman at the theater. Heyman was sitting with Steve Kloves, the writer who had written the screenplay for the first Harry Potter film. Radcliffe could not help but notice that the two men repeatedly turned around to look at him during the performance. Heyman, who also happened to be the film's producer, took one look at Daniel Radcliffe and felt the long search for an actor to portray Harry Potter was over. "Right then," Heyman told Terry Lawson of Knight Ridder/Tribune News Service, "I knew I had found our Harry." He spoke to the Radcliffes about his feelings, and they eventually reconsidered, allowing Daniel to try out for the role. In spite of the director and producer's hunch about Radcliffe being right for the role, the actor still had to go through three rounds of auditions before being cast. Radcliffe was taking a bath one evening when his father told him he had won the role. "I cried," he recalled to Stephen Schaefer of the Boston Globe. "It was so cool."

Instant fame

Radcliffe went overnight from being a boy who dabbled in acting to the instantly famous actor who would embody Harry Potter in a highly anticipated film adaptation. The first Harry Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in England and Canada), had made a literary superstar of author J. K. Rowling. Millions of fans all over the globe were ready to shower their intense Potter devotion to the film—or to condemn it to obscurity if it betrayed the spirit of the beloved novel. To the relief of the book's fans, Rowling was involved in the film's casting and other aspects of production. As reported by Dana Harris in Variety, the author gave Radcliffe her seal of approval: "Having seen Dan Radcliffe's screen test, I don't think Chris Columbus could have found a better Harry." In the midst of his newfound celebrity, Radcliffe began shooting the first film, joined by a cast of notable English actors and fellow novices Rupert Grint and Emma Watson portraying Harry's best pals Ron and Hermione.

Released in November of 2001, the first film in the series scored a huge success at the box office, earning close to $1 billion worldwide. The movie chronicles Harry Potter's journey from his unhappy life with an emotionally abusive aunt and uncle to his enchanted existence as a young wizard learning his trade at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Thrilled at the prospect of seeing Rowling's vividly described world come to life on the big screen, millions of fans in countries all over the world flocked to theaters. Some fans, and many critics, left theaters somewhat disappointed, complaining that the film was competent and faithful to the book but lacked sparkle and imagination. Mindful of the importance of staying true to the much-loved book, the filmmakers had tread carefully, creating a film that many described as a slavish imitation. Time magazine's Richard Corliss expressed the feelings of several reviewers when he wrote, "The film lacks moviemaking buoyancy—the feeling of soaring in space that Rowling's magic-carpet prose gives the reader." Even many who found the film lacking approved of the casting and praised the actors' performances, including Newsweek 's David Ansen: "His eyes dancing with intelligence, Daniel Radcliffe is a mercifully unsentimental Harry Potter, likable and inquisitive but slightly aloof, his self-possession the necessary defense of an orphan raised by hostile Muggles [non-magical humans]."

Time to change

A year and a half after the release of Chamber of Secrets, the third installment of the film series was released, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban signalled a number of significant changes. A new director, Alfonso Cuaron, had taken over, replacing Columbus, who needed a break after the intense workload of the first two films. Cuaron had achieved fame—and won an Academy Award—for his racy Mexican coming-of-age film Y Tu Mamà Tambièn (2001), but he won the Harry Potter job in part because of his direction of the film A Little Princess, a 1995 children's film that happened to be one of Rowling's favorites. While Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson were initially devastated by Columbus's departure from the series, they eventually embraced Cuaron and credited him with expanding their acting abilities. Cuaron began his acquaintance with the young actors by asking them to write an essay about their characters, prompting them to think about their characters' personality and motivation in ways they had not done with the first two films.

Other major changes involved Radcliffe and his fellow "child" actors, all of whom had grown up considerably during the time between Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban. In spite of the filmmakers' best efforts to complete the films quickly, the young actors were maturing faster than the characters, causing tremendous speculation about whether they would be able to continue in their roles for all seven films. For the time being, however, the actors' plunge into adolescence suited the darker material in Prisoner of Azkaban, which brings to the fore the sense of frustration and isolation felt by so many during the transition from childhood to adulthood. In Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry is forced to confront complex and sometimes unpleasant realities—about himself, his parents' murders, and the possible betrayal of his parents by their friend Sirius Black. Radcliffe explained to Jeff Jensen of Entertainment Weekly that his deep discussions with Cuaron about Harry's emotional state helped him immeasurably. "I'll forever be in his debt," Radcliffe told Jensen. "It [Cuaron's guidance] basically affected the way I approached everything after that."

The series' new direction earned a higher degree of praise from critics and continued to draw in record-breaking crowds at theaters around the world. Opening on June 4, 2004, Prisoner of Azkaban earned nearly $100 million in its first weekend alone. Radcliffe's fame continued to swell, with his every move making headlines. The press wrote that he had surpassed singer Charlotte Church to become the second wealthiest teenager in Britain, behind Prince Harry, grandson of the queen of England. Asked by the Cincinnati Post how it feels to grow up in the public eye, Radcliffe shared his strategy for retaining normalcy: "I never read the articles or read what people are saying about me on the Internet. If you read all that you just become so self-conscious." Instead of fretting about the lack of privacy that accompanies fame, Radcliffe focuses on the benefits of his association with Harry Potter. He has had the opportunity to meet and work with many actors he admires, he learned from Prisoner of Azkaban costar Gary Oldman (1958–) how to play the bass guitar, and his grades have actually improved since he became a film star. He has developed a passion for movies and thinks about one day becoming a writer or director. Cuaron speculated to Jensen that Radcliffe would grow up to be either an actor, a director, or a rock star. When asked which career he thought he might choose, Radcliffe displayed the self-confidence he has acquired in recent years, querying, "Can't I be all three?"

Daniel Radcliffe - Biography

The harry potter star had a meteoric rise to fame after being cast in j.k.rowling's fantasy series .

Daniel Radcliffe chatting during an interview.

"I'm just going to enjoy it. After all, I might do this film and then disappear. Or something might go horribly wrong and I'll never act again." So said 12-year-old Daniel Radcliffe before the release of Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone .

He needn't have worried, of course; within eight years he was one of Britain's wealthiest teenagers and the spell-binding star of the Harry Potter movie franchise. Although he owes much to the boy wizard character created by author JK Rowlin g , Daniel once admitted that when as a child he read her first two books, he found them hard to get into.

Daniel Radcliffe's early career

Born on July 23 1989 in Fulham, London, to literary agent father Alan and casting director mother Marcia, Daniel Jacob Radcliffe was the opposite of the typical extrovert child star. He was put up for the role of the young David Copperfield in a 1999 version of the Dickens classic by his mum, in an effort to boost his confidence. Daniel landed the part and made an impressive debut opposite Bob Hoskins. It was while filming his second acting job in August 2000 Pierce Brosnan flick The Tailor Of Panama , that he heard he'd won the role that would change his life forever.

"I thought it would be really cool just to be able to say I auditioned for the part – I never thought I would get it," he said at the time. Between shooting the four Harry Potter movies he continued to study at the private City of London School, but had little in common with boys his age and academia held little appeal for him. Growing up on screen meant he mingled mainly with adults and in a 2007 interview he admitted his best friend was 40-something Will Steggle, his dresser on set.

At 16 his influence in the world of showbiz was indisputable. He became the youngest non-royal ever to have an individual portrait hung in the National Portrait Gallery. And by 2007 he, along with cast-mates Rupert Grint and  Emma Watson , had been recognised on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As the success of the Harry Potter films snowballed, so did Daniel's pay packet, with him reportedly earning £8 million for the fifth film.

Daniel Radcliffe's career after Harry Potter

The down-to-earth actor insisted money had not changed him, though, and he was certainly not tempted by the shopping sprees some young stars indulged in. "Even when I was very young and before any of this had happened, I remember being repulsed by ostentatious displays of wealth," he told one magazine. His decision at 17 to appear as the lead in Peter Shaffer's Equus , before the fifth Potter film was released, was a chance to show the world what he was capable of beyond Hogwarts. "To some people, I will only ever be Harry," he said in an interview with The Sunday Times  in February 2007.

"I know that, I don't fight it. I don't want to distance myself from him. I'm proud of that work. But I do want to show them that I am not Harry Potter. I am an actor." Daniel earned rave reviews for his first major stage work, although he admitted the nudity it calls for was terrifying to begin with and that he'd asked his friend and idol Gary Oldman for advice. What the production did make clear was that Daniel was all grown up. His first non-Potter movie, meanwhile, was the Australian film December Boys  – about four orphans competing for a family. He also won the role of Rudyard Kipling's tragic son in 2007 ITV drama My Boy Jack .

Well-read, with a passion for poetry and Keats he achieved good AS results but decided not to finish school, choosing instead to focus on his acting. Recognising that he owes his start to the wizarding series, Daniel also acknowledged that Hogwarts school of magic had become an integral part of who he is. He was very emotional when the franchise came to an end, explaining: "Harry Potter has provided my friends, seen me through my exams. I've had my first girlfriend, my first kiss. It's been my life."

Daniel Radcliffe's partner Erin Darke

Daniel Radcliffe and girlfriend Erin Darke pose at the opening night after party for the new hit play "The Lifespan of A Fact" on Broadway at Brasserie 8 1/2 on October 18, 2018 in New York City

Daniel welcomed his first child with longtime girlfriend Erin Darke in April . Daniel has been in a relationship with Erin, 38, since 2012 after they met on the set of Kill Your Darlings , where they also played love interests. They are notoriously private about their relationship but have both collaborated and supported one another's ventures over the years.

While the pair intend to keep their son out of the limelight, the actor has shed some light into what his life as a father has been like thus far. "It's great. It's crazy and intense, but he's wonderful and Erin is amazing – it's a real privilege also to have this time with him," he told ET.

Daniel continued: "I was always going to take some time off, which not everyone is able to do, and so I'm able to kind of just be here with him a lot, which is lovely. So, we're having a great time."

The British star also opened up about the balance of juggling work and fatherhood, revealing he is being selective about what roles he takes in case it means being away from his son. "I'm sure I'm going to probably, for at least a few years, become a little more selective about how much I work just because I really enjoy spending time with him and I'd like to continue doing that," he told E!.

He talked about his alcohol addiction when he made a guest appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs in March 2020. Moreover, he said that the problem started while he was filming Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince . Also, he said that his performance in the film was affected by his addiction.

Daniel Radcliffe Religion

Radcliffe is an atheist. However, he said he’s proud of being Jewish. He revealed that while growing up there was no religious faith in their house during an interview in 2012. Moreover, he referred to himself as a militant atheist if religion started affecting legislation. Further, he said that his family were “Christmas tree Jews.”

He revealed that he was an atheist in 2009 and said that he does not preach his atheism but has respect for people like Richard Dawkins who are outspoken about their atheism. In 2019, he depicted himself as an agnostic leaning toward atheism.

Daniel Radcliffe Twitter

Radcliffe is not active on social media thus he does not have a Twitter account. He said that not having the platforms makes things easier because if he posts what he’s doing one moment and the next asks for privacy people would not take his request seriously.

Welcome To Hogwarts

In 2001, the cinematic world was introduced to the ‘Wizarding World of Harry Potter’ in Chris Columbus’ film, ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’ — over the next decade, audiences were captivated by all that was this magical wonderland. From quidditch to butterbeer, fanatics of the novels turned film series embraced and marveled over the most minute details of the series. Supporting characters of the series grew to have their own followings such as the late Alan Rickman’s character Severus Snape or Gary Oldman’s Sirius Black.

Fans fawned over the blossoming relationship between Rupert Grint and Emma Watson’s characters, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Beneath the conversations of Hogwarts houses and Patronus Charms was a crucial element of the films that were not getting the love I expected it to — that of the magnificent portrayal of the film’s titular character by Daniel Radcliffe .

Daniel Radcliffe does not get the credit he deserves as the wonderfully talented actor he is. After leading one of the most financially successful film franchises of all time in ‘The Harry Potter Series’, captivating in his performances as the character from a very early age, he still isn’t one of the most discussed elements as to why the series worked — but he should be. So often do we get wrapped up in all our favorite subtleties of films and forget to give credit to those leading the charge.

Since wrapping up his stint as the Boy Who Lived, Radcliffe has proved his versatility as a performer dipping his toe into several different genres such as his comedic role as the dog walker in ‘Trainwreck’ , which also starred Bill Hader and Amy Schumer , or in an action film such as the recent ‘Guns Akimbo’ , a film that paired Radcliffe opposite Samara Weaving . Despite spending a decade as one character, Radcliffe has carved out a unique career for himself. Only by highlighting some of his key performances can we truly appreciate his exemplary talent as an actor.

‘The Harry Potter’ Series

Much has been said already about the magical eight-film story that began in 2001 and concluded in 2011 so I won’t waste time recounting what has already been covered. What I would like to focus on instead is that of Daniel Radcliffe’s performance as the character. Without an actor to perfectly balance all the joy, pain, confidence, self-doubt, and heart that went into the character of Harry Potter, the series wouldn’t have had a leg to stand on. Cast at just eleven years old, Daniel Radcliffe embodied the hero fans grew to love in the series of novels, immaculately portraying all that was Harry Potter. Not enough credit is given to Radcliffe for giving some of the best child actor performances in the history of film — audiences have seen times when young actors have been overwhelmed by the moment, Radcliffe was not.

There are many moments in the series one can point to when highlighting Radcliffe’s talent, but for time’s sake, I will limit it to just one. The first being from the third act of the fifth film, ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’ where, just after suffering a tragic loss, Harry is succumbing to Voldemort’s influence. As Harry writhes on the floor, Radcliffe putting his entire body into his performance, you can feel in his eyes the pain of the character and all that he has been through.

But suddenly, there is a moment where that pain turns to hope. Harry fights off the Ralph Fiennes played villain as he is reminded of the good in his life. This scene is emblematic of who Harry Potter is as a character, someone who has had terrible things happen to them but still remains trying to do good, and Daniel Radcliffe completely nails the scene. From his body language to the tone of his voice, Radcliffe is Harry Potter in this scene proving to be one of the best castings in the history of Hollywood.

‘The Woman In Black’

Following the end of his most iconic role, Daniel Radcliffe opted to step into the horror genre opposite Ciarán Hinds in 2012’s ‘The Woman in Black’ . Radcliffe portrayed widower and single father, Arthur Kipps, who on business visits a marsh house that is home to all kinds of supernatural presences. While it is commendable how seamlessly Radcliffe stepped into a new genre, selling all the spooks and scares of the film, what always stood out to me was the subtlety of his performance. In the hands of other actors, his character’s traumatic past and love for his son may have led to a bigger, more boisterous performance; yet Radcliffe gives a soft-spoken and quiet performance that heightened the tension of the film, making it feel more emotionally resonant. While the film was criticized for its implementation of common horror tropes, what clearly stood out as the strength of the film was that of the performance of Radcliffe.

In 2016, Radcliffe shined in his most dramatic role yet starring alongside Toni Collette in the crime-drama ‘Imperium’ . In the film, Radcliffe, portraying a young undercover cop, infiltrates a white supremacist group that is intending to commit an act of domestic terrorism. Radcliffe perfectly portrays the weight this character holds on his shoulders and maintains an intensity throughout the entire film. The conflict in Radcliffe’s character to maintain this persona of a white supremacist despite having strong feelings against them is palpable in his performance. By the end of the film, there is a sympathy for Radcliffe’s character after the disgusting journey he embarked on that is only highlighted by the performance. This is the film that truly shows Daniel Radcliffe’s prowess as a dramatic actor and alludes to what he is capable of in the future.

‘Swiss Army Man’

Released in the same year as ‘Imperium’, Daniel Radcliffe starred in a very different kind of film playing a talking, farting dead body in A24’s ‘Swiss Army Man’ . This is easily the oddest film Radcliffe has ever been a part of and that oddity carries over into Radcliffe’s unique performance. With slurred speech and little facial movement, Radcliffe pulls off portraying a talking dead boy scarily well opposite Paul Dano . The role of Manny the dead body may be the most Radcliffe has ever been asked to do as an actor and he sells it completely in the most endearing way. There is a child-like innocence to his performance that feels like the key to why the film and the character work so well. Manny is the heart of the film and his chemistry with Dano propels the story forwards.

Not every actor has what it takes to play a dead body, an undercover cop, and a youthful wizard. It takes a high degree of versatility, charisma, and talent to be able to put together the career Daniel Radcliffe has for himself. It is clear to me that Radcliffe is the reason for so many film’s successes yet does not always get the credit for it that he deserves. Daniel Radcliffe is one of Hollywood’s greatest talents and one we should be praising for all the smiles, laughs, and tears he has brought us over the years.

The Untold Truth Of Daniel Radcliffe

Daniel Radcliffe glances to side

In 2001, the world waited with bated breath to see Hollywood's first film adaptation of the "Harry Potter" series of children's fantasy novels by J.K. Rowling. The literary phenomenon had enjoyed a once-in-a-generation kind of popularity around the globe, and fans were anxiously waiting to see which young actor would portray the titular "Boy Who Lived," and whether he would be able to meet their formidable expectations.

That boy was then-12-year-old British actor Daniel Radcliffe. At an age when most children's biggest priorities are passing a test or playing the latest video game, Radcliffe was thrust into the global limelight as the face of one of the biggest movie franchises of all time. For the next 10 years, the budding actor grew up in the glare of the public eye where all his triumphs and tribulations were on full display, all the time.

Despite the challenging nature of the fame he was forced to deal with from his tweens, Radcliffe has since gone on to establish himself as one of the most successful actors in the world. The man who fronted among the biggest blockbusters in the history of Hollywood also lent his star power to offbeat indie projects with up-and-coming filmmakers. Here are 14 lesser-known facts about Radcliffe that fans need to know.

Radcliffe wasn't originally a Harry Potter fan

Young Daniel Radcliffe smiles

In the 2000s, it was hard to come by any kid who did not love the "Harry Potter" novels. J.K. Rowling's magical blend of fantasy, mystery, humor, and school-age hijinks cast an irresistible spell on children and grown-ups alike. But just like Harry himself could overcome the Imperius curse, Daniel Radcliffe initially proved quite immune to the charms of the boy wizard's saga.

In an interview with Business Insider , Radcliffe admitted he had not jumped on the "Harry Potter" bandwagon when the craze was first picking up steam. "I only read the first two and I wasn't really as into it as everyone else in my class was just because I wasn't really a reader," explained Radcliffe. "I was like oh books, I'm not ready." The young actor's reservations remained even when he was cast as Harry in the first movie in the series; as he told "Harry Potter" co-star Emma Watson (via The Huffington Post ), "I like WWF better."

Fortunately, Radcliffe got over his hang-up with time and, once he was in the thick of making the films, began to appreciate the level of imagination and creativity with which Rowling had imbued her novels. Radcliffe went on to star in the adaptations of each book in the series, and will forever be the definitive face of Harry for millions of fans.

He pranked Hagrid, then wrote a letter of apology

Harry and Hagrid talk

While the "Harry Potter" series is full of heart-warming friendships, none hit us in the feels harder than the bond between Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) and Rubeus Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane). Coltrane is also one of the original actors with whom Radcliffe began his journey in "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone."

While Radcliffe was an intelligent and eager actor right from the start, he was also a 12-year-old kid who desperately needed some release from the long hard slog of making a big-budget movie. According to an article by Contactmusic.com , Radcliffe once played a prank on set where he changed the language settings on Coltrane's cell phone so all the messages were translated into Turkish.

The prank caused Coltrane more than a little inconvenience, because he was unable to make phone calls. Eventually, it took the help of a crew member who was well-versed in Turkish to change the phone's language settings back to English. "I think Daniel was so upset at what had happened that he wrote me that note," Coltrane recalled. "[It read,] 'Dear Mr. Coltrane, I'm sorry I changed your mobile telephone into Turkish ...'"

Daniel Radcliffe is the Boy Who Raps

In the books and movies, Harry Potter was one of the best seekers the game of Quidditch had ever seen. In real life, Radcliffe's talents lie more in the realm of art than sports, with a genre bent that long-time fans might not expect.

In an interview with Jimmy Fallon , Radcliffe revealed that he is a big fan of rap music and was introduced to the genre by Eminem's songs. "I've always had an obsession with memorizing complicated, lyrically intricate, fast songs," said the actor, further admitting, "It's a disease." Radcliffe then proceeded to belt out a flawless rendition of 1999 rap duo Blackalicious' hit tongue-twister "Alphabet Aerobics."

In case you thought that was a one-off thing, the actor also sang and danced his way through the Broadway hit "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," which ended up getting nominated for a Tony. It seems when Draco Malfoy mockingly asked Harry, "Training for the ballet, Potter?" Radcliffe took the insult deeply to heart and spent the next few years learning to become a singing, dancing showstopper.

He's an atheist

Daniel Radcliffe smiling on couch

Daniel Radcliffe is a private person by nature and rarely offers any insight into his personal life until specifically asked, but over the years, he's revealed a bit about his personal life and history and how they've impacted his views on politics and religion.

The actor grew up in an Irish family with a protestant father and a Jewish mother. When speaking out about the need to separate religion from education, particularly sex education, Radcliffe revealed (via Yahoo! News ), "I'm not religious, I'm an atheist, and a militant atheist when religion starts impacting on legislation." In the past, Radcliffe has also expressed his admiration for well-known atheist thinkers like Richard Dawkins .

Still, despite describing himself as a "militant atheist," Radcliffe appeared to have softened his stance in later years, telling The New York Post , "I personally am agnostic leaning toward atheism. I don't expect there to be a God and an afterlife — I would be pleasantly surprised if there was." Still, despite keeping a distance from organized religion, Radcliffe does see his Jewish heritage as an  important part of his identity.

He has learned to accept his vertical shortcomings

The thing about being a child actor is that at some point you have to grow into an adult actor in the full glare of the public eye, where everyone is ready to endlessly pick apart your insecurities and perceived shortcomings. In the case of Daniel Radcliffe, much has been said about the fact that he is on the shorter side as an adult.

In an industry as obsessed with looks as Hollywood, the fact that Radcliffe often does not physically measure up to his co-stars has been commented upon time and again. Naturally, Radcliffe himself has had to come to terms with the fact that he is one of the shortest leading men in the film industry.

The actor once commented on his vertical woes as his "Harry Potter" co-stars Emma Watson and Rupert Grint shot up in height past him in later years. "I was worried on a personal level because I wanted to be slightly taller than I am, ideally," Radcliffe admitted (via Yahoo! News). "But I've now accepted it. Basically, I've came [sic] to the conclusion a while ago that you can either be really bitter about it or you can make loads of funny jokes."

Radcliffe is bit of a people pleaser

Daniel Radcliffe with fans

One thing that gets commented upon the most regarding Daniel Radcliffe's transition from tween star to adult actor is how well-adjusted he has managed to stay throughout the entire process. Far from being involved in any scandals or letting the fame go to his head, Radcliffe has always tried to act humble and accommodating towards his fans and the people he works with.

In fact, it could be argued that Radcliffe is a bit too accommodating, even when his fans behave in a less-than-exemplary manner. In an interview with Graham Norton , Radcliffe admitted that he has "worked really hard to not be [seen as a jerk] and be as far away from that as possible." In pursuit of this endeavor, Radcliffe described how he sometimes overcompensates in front of rude fans.

"That's sometimes meant you can be really rude to me, kind of, and I'll just be like 'Yeah, fine,'" Radcliffe continued. The actor then went on to implore his fans to be a bit more considerate in meetings, and to "just say a nice thing, it's so easy." But he also revealed that he is learning to stand up for himself more and not let his polite habits be taken advantage of by pushy individuals.

He's not a fan of all his past work

Harry speaks with Ginny

It is often a strange thing for an adult actor to watch a hugely popular work that they starred in as a kid, before they had any real idea of what "acting" actually entails. Daniel Radcliffe is no different when it comes to judging his own performances in the "Harry Potter" films.

In an interview with The Daily Mail , the actor explained that those movies are full of acting choices that he regrets making, especially in such well-known projects. "The moments I'm not as proud of, mistakes other actors get to make in rehearsal rooms or at drama school, are all on film for everyone to see."

In fact, there is one particular "Harry Potter" movie that Radcliffe feels represents his lowest point as a child actor, and that is "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." As the actor explains, "My acting is very one-note and I can see I got complacent and what I was trying to do just didn't come across." Radcliffe was kinder towards his performance in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," deeming it a "progression" from his work in the previous four movies.

Crushing on his co-star?

Harry Potter cast at event

Considering that Daniel Radcliffe spent his entire adolescence making the "Harry Potter" movies, it is understandable that he got his first taste of romantic attraction on the sets of the franchise. And considering how much time Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint spent together, it was only natural for feelings to develop between them.

In the past, both Radcliffe and Grint have been romantically linked to Watson. "Emma's a pretty girl," Grint said in an interview with The Telegraph . "Have Daniel or I ever hit on Emma? Well, she's quite popular with the cast. As for who has the worst crush on her — me or Radcliffe — I'd rather not say." From the actor's comments, it seemed both he and Radcliffe tried to start something with Watson at some point.

In another interview reported by The Independent , however, Radcliffe declared that he would never date Watson, considering the very idea itself "something really incestuous." On her part, while Watson has been mostly mum about her romantic history , there have been rumors that she was dating Draco Malfoy actor Tom Felton at some point. Guess that's one area where Malfoy finally (allegedly) managed to beat Harry Potter.

Why the color of Harry's eyes was different

Harry with his wand

While Daniel Radcliffe is the perfect Harry Potter for most fans, there is one crucial area where the actor differs from his novel counterpart . In the books, it is repeatedly emphasized that Harry's eyes are a bright, arresting shade of green just like his mother's. In reality, Radcliffe's eyes are an equally arresting shade of blue.

This difference in eye color proved problematic during the adaptation of the first novel. Any creative choices made at that time would have to be stuck to for every future film. In an interview with Empire (via Wizarding World ), producer David Heyman explained that they made an effort to stay truthful to the books. To that end, Radcliffe was given green contact lenses. Unfortunately, the actor suffered an allergic reaction to the them, resulting in red, swollen eyes.

"Dan's eyes were puffy and red [during the scene]," Heyman explained, though "oddly it was quite appropriate for the scene where he was saying goodbye to Hagrid." Still, the filmmakers had to resolve the problem of Radcliffe's allergy to contact lenses. Fortunately, J.K. Rowling allowed that Harry's specific eye color from the books had no impact on the larger plot of the series, and so Radcliffe was permitted to play Harry as a blue-eyed character without any need to change his appearance.

He's a secret poet

Daniel Radcliffe signing autographs

After dabbling in acting, singing, dancing, and rapping, you'd think Daniel Radcliffe would have had his fill of creative pursuits. But the star has yet another talent up his sleeve as a poet, even though he has tried to keep this particular talent under wraps with a pseudonym.

In a 2009 interview with The Guardian , Radcliffe let slip a few hints that he had secretly published poems under a false name in his late teens. The young actor also explained why he felt an affinity for the world of poetry and short stories. "As an actor, there is room for a certain amount of creativity," Radcliffe stated. "but you're always ultimately going to be saying somebody else's words. I don't think I'd have the stamina, skill, or ability to write a novel, but I'd love to write short stories and poetry, because those are my two passions."

Naturally, the media jumped on the info and quickly dug up four poems that Radcliffe had published online under the pen name Jacob Gershon. One of the poems, titled "Away Days," is an exploration of the narrator's affair with a sex worker. Another one pays homage to rock star Pete Doherty. The third critiques the world of TV talent competitions, and the fourth is about a guy attempting to seduce women. Radcliffe has since expressed interest in writing even more poetry and short stories after becoming an adult.

He has some rather unusual medical conditions

Harry finds his wand

We've already seen how Daniel Radcliffe suffered an allergic reaction to the green contact lenses he was supposed to wear for the "Harry Potter" films. But that was not the only time Radcliffe's body betrayed him in an unexpected manner. It turns out the actor also suffers from an allergy to nickel, a common metal used in the manufacturing of glasses.

Radcliffe revealed in an interview for Digital Spy that his allergy was set off the first time he put on the iconic round "Harry Potter" glasses. "These two rings of whiteheads and spots had come up around my eyes," the actor explained. "It took us about a week to realize that it was actually the glasses." After that, Radcliffe had to wear specially manufactured specs that did not irritate his skin.

In 2008, Radcliffe also revealed in an interview with The Daily Mail that he suffers from a neurological disorder that affects coordination known as dyspraxia. While the actor has a mild form of the condition, it has caused certain problems in his life, from having trouble in school and in sports to having difficulty tying his shoelaces. But it looks like he manages to wield a wand just fine — maybe the role of Harry Potter helped him hone his skills.

Radcliffe stays away from social media

Daniel Radcliffe speaks with reporter

While most people would be thrilled to have social media followers numbering in the millions, celebrities who actually pull off such a feat often have to deal with the resulting lack of privacy and negative public discourse. Daniel Radcliffe is one celebrity who is very suspicious of social media — in fact, he prefers to avoid it altogether.

The actor famously does not have any official social media accounts with which to engage directly with fans. In an interview with First We Feast , Radcliffe admitted that the main reason behind is his lack of faith in his own patience with online trolls, commenting, "I 100% know that if I did [join Twitter], you all would be waking up to stories of like, 'Dan Radcliffe gets into fight with random person on Twitter.'"

The actor also admitted that he has looked up people saying negative things about him on social media in the past, which he deemed a mistake. Finally, Radcliffe concluded that he was not mentally strong enough to face the torrent of criticism and abuse that celebrities have to deal with on a regular basis online, and he has made his peace with that fact.

On using alcohol to deal with fame

Harry and Ron drink butterbeer

Despite how normal and down-to-earth Daniel Radcliffe can seem, the fact is that he's had anything but a normal life. As one of the most famous faces on the planet before even hitting puberty, Radcliffe had to deal with the constant public scrutiny his job as a blockbuster actor entailed. While the actor has done a commendable job dealing with the fame, there was a time when he felt the need to rely on alcohol to get him through the tough times.

"The quickest way of forgetting about the fact that you were being watched was to get very drunk," Radcliffe explained during an interview for  Off Camera with Sam Jones . "Then as you get very drunk, you become aware that, 'Oh, people are watching more now because now I'm getting very drunk, so I should probably drink more to ignore that more.'"

Radcliffe's dependence on alcohol spiraled out of control at one point, and he credits his close friends with helping him come out of the tunnel at the other end with a much stronger control over his use. Despite the issues the fame caused, Radcliffe has stated that he ultimately does not regret the role of Harry Potter.

He's not interested in blockbusters anymore

Daniel Radcliffe as a corpse

After the runaway success of the "Harry Potter" movies, the world was waiting with bated breath to see how Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint would handle their adult careers after having already become some of the most successful actors of all time.

While Grint has put in some solid work over the years as an adult actor, and Emma Watson has had many critical and commercial successes to her name, it is Radcliffe's career that has raised the most eyebrows. The actor seems to take an almost perverse delight in shedding his boy wizard image for a series of bizarre roles in small indie movies. From playing surprisingly useful farting corpse to a man who has guns nailed to his hands, Radcliffe's post-Potter filmography has been anything but predictable.

And that is the way the actor seems to like it, now that his "Harry Potter" career has completely removed the need to do certain roles for the paychecks. Radcliffe describes it as "liberating" to have already done the most financially successful project he will ever be a part of. While he hasn't completely shut the door on doing blockbuster cinema again, he's stated that he prefers working with directors who have a unique voice, even if that voice is not considered very "commercial" within the film industry.

Daniel Radcliffe: The Biography Hardcover – January 1, 2015

The true story of the Half-Blood Prince who has become a fullblooded actor and level-headed young adult

Danielle Radcliffe went from shy schoolboy to the world's most famous boy wizard overnight. Just 10 when he won the iconic role of Harry Potter, Daniel has often had to beat his own demons as he met the challenge of combining childhood with being a child star. No one could have envisaged just how huge Harry Potter would be, or how dramatically life-changing it would be for the little boy teachers once wrote off as having no prospects. Daniel won the part out of a staggering 16,000 boys who auditioned. Now it is hard to believe that anyone but him could have ever played the role. Daniel became a film legend before he was out of his teens. In a bid to detach himself from being simply the boy with a wand, he bravely took on projects which were often controversial and challenging—but never dull. His courage at diversifying has won him a new army of fans. Now established as a leading young actor with a fame that is literally worth a fortune, having managed to conquer drinking issues, he is wiser, happier, and looking forward to a future of fulfilled dreams and ambition.

Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter

Daniel Jacob Radcliffe was born on 23 July 1989 in West London , England , the only child of Alan George Radcliffe, a literary agent, and Marcia Jeannine Gresham (née Marcia Gresham Jacobson), a casting agent who was involved in several films for the BBC, including The Inspector Lynley Mysteries and Walk Away And I Stumble. [1] Alan Radcliffe and Marcia Gresham, discouraged their only child from show business when, at age five, he said that he wanted to perform.

However, his parents decided to let him audition for the role of young David Copperfield to boost his confidence after he told them that he 'wasn't good at anything', as in December 1999 , he made his first on-screen appearance as the young David Copperfield in David Copperfield , the BBC's televised version of the Charles Dickens ' novel David Copperfield . This was followed in 2001 by his first film appearance, as Mark Pendel in The Tailor of Panama . In 2001 he starred in his most remembered role; that of Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets . In 2002 he had a role in the play The Play What I Wrote directed by Kenneth Branagh ; a production well known for their "surprise guest".

In 2004 and 2005 he returned to the Potter franchise in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire . Radcliffe starred in the independent Australian film December Boys directed by Rod Hardy within the next year and in 2007 he once again put on the famous lightning-bolt shaped scar and round glasses in the fifth Harry Potter film Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix . In 2009, he was in its sequel, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince . He appeared in the final two Harry Potter movies, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 , in 2010 and 2011 respectively. In 2012 he portrayed Arthur Kipps in the horror film The Woman in Black alongside his Harry Potter co-star Ciarán Hinds . His on-screen son is played by his real-life godson. [1]

Radcliffe also stars in the romantic comedy What If which has gained attention, ultimately getting on the iTunes top 25 movies. In 2013, he portrayed American poet Allen Ginsberg in the thriller drama Kill Your Darlings , directed by John Krokidas. He also starred in The F Word and Alexandre Aja's Horns . Radcliffe's starred as a revised character of Igor in Victor Frankenstein and will be starring as American reporter Jake Adelstein in Tokyo Vice .

In 2000, producer David Heyman asked Radcliffe to audition for the role of Harry Potter for the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone , the best-selling book by British author J. K. Rowling. Rowling had been searching for an unknown British actor to personify the character; however, Radcliffe's parents did not want him to audition for the role, as the contract required shooting all seven films in Los Angeles, California, and so they did not tell him. The movie's director Chris Columbus recalled thinking, "This is what I want. This is Harry Potter", after he saw a video of the young actor in David Copperfield . Eight months later, and after several auditions, Radcliffe was selected to play the part. Rowling also endorsed the selection saying, "I don't think Chris Columbus could have found a better Harry." Radcliffe's parents originally turned down the offer, as they had been told that it would involve six films shot in Los Angeles. Warner Bros. instead offered Radcliffe a two-movie contract with shooting in the UK though, when signing up, Radcliffe was unsure if he would do any more pictures.

In his GCSE examinations he got seven B's, a couple of A's and an A*and in his AS-level exams and he got A grades in 2006 but decided to take a break from education and did not go to college or university. Part of his reasoning was that he already knew he wanted to act and write, and that it would be difficult to have a normal college experience. "The paparazzi, they'd love it," he told Details magazine in 2007." If there were any parties going on, they'd be tipped off as to where they were.

Radcliffe prefers being called Dan. He plays the bass guitar and once had a bass lesson from Prisoner of Azkaban co-star Gary Oldman . A passionate guitar rock music fan, some of his favourite bands include The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Libertines, The Strokes, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. His personal favourite band is The Hold Steady, Out of Brooklyn. [2]

Radcliffe has also been a supporter of various charities. Fans have, on his request, repeatedly donated to various organisations, including the Demelza House charity.

In 2006, Radcliffe spoofed his Harry Potter image in an episode of the comedy series Extras starring Ricky Gervais. In the episode, Radcliffe plays himself, but a warped version who womanises and keeps coming on to Dame Diana Rigg, also appearing as herself. In the film, Radcliffe appears in several scenes spoofing Harry Potter, only with Radcliffe playing a Boy Scout (with Potter glasses) who comes upon an elf in the forest (played by his Potter co-star Warwick Davis ). The DVD release of the episode included outtakes in which Radcliffe couldn't keep a straight face whenever Davis uttered a line of dialogue about his flute.

In 2007, Radcliffe starred, along with his Harry Potter co-star Richard Griffiths , in the London West End stage production, Equus. Leading up to his performance, the 17 year old star received much criticism about the adult content in the production. Radcliffe appears nude in the production and publicity materials portrayed a much grown-up and nude Radcliffe. Radcliffe also smokes in the play, upsetting some Harry Potter fans and anti-smoking advocates. [ citation needed ] He reprised his role in the US production in September 2008. It ended on February 8, 2009.

In August 2008 Radcliffe revealed that he has dyspraxia , which is a developmental issue that make it hard for him to do certain things.

In an interview in Entertainment Weekly, he has said that he cannot wait to film the seventh Harry Potter movie. After rereading the chapter in which Harry encounters Dumbledore in King's Cross , he was surprised to find out Harry is completely naked during the scene, to which he replied, "It's old hat for me now," referring to his role in Equus, in which he is naked on stage for a period of time. However that scene was changed for Part 2, so that Harry and Dumbledore have the conversation from the book, but Harry isn't naked.

Radcliffe has also revealed that he is Jewish, on his mother's side, and "is very proud to be Jewish". However, he also claims that he is an atheist . [3]

In 2009, Radcliffe was nominated and voted in eighteenth place in Portrait Magazine, Top 30 Under 30 2009 List . [4] Some of Radcliffe's fellow Harry Potter costars were also nominated. Bonnie Wright who plays Ginny Weasley was second place, Evanna Lynch who plays Luna Lovegood was third place, Rupert Grint who plays Ron Weasley was fifth place, Emma Watson who plays Hermione Granger was eighth place, and Tom Felton who plays Draco Malfoy was fourteenth place.

When Equus first hit the stage many parents were concerned due to Radcliffe smoking in the production, and the effect this behaviour may have on their children. Radcliffe assured his fans that the cigarettes he smokes in the play are fake, and that he does not smoke in real life. However, Radcliffe was photographed with a cigarette in hand, and has since confessed that he does indeed smoke. Speculation continues as to what the cigarette actually contained; as the picture was snapped at a celebrity party - in London - it was unlikely to consist solely of tobacco. [ citation needed ]

In March 2011 Radcliffe enraged executives of Warner Bros. when he decided to appear in a showing of his play How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying on the same night as the London premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 . Warner Bros. was forced to pay the play's production company $300,000 to cancel the performance and ensure Radcliffe's attendance at the premiere. [5]

Radcliffe's first post- Harry Potter project was the 2012 horror film The Woman in Black , adapted from the 1983 novel by Susan Hill. The film was released on 3 February 2012 in the United States and Canada, and was released on 10 February in the UK. Radcliffe portrays a man sent to deal with the legal matters of a mysterious woman who has just died, and soon after he begins to experience strange events and hauntings from the ghost of a woman dressed in black. He has said he was "incredibly excited" to be part of the film and described the script as "beautifully written".

In 2013, Radcliffe portrayed American poet Allen Ginsberg in the thriller drama Kill Your Darlings , directed by John Krokidas. He also starred in The F Word and Alexandre Aja's Horns . Radcliffe played the character Igor in Victor Frankenstein and American reporter Jake Adelstein in Tokyo Vice . Radcliffe also performed at the Noël Coward Theatre in the stage play revival of Martin McDonagh's dark comedy The Cripple of Inishmaan as the lead, Billy Claven, for which he won the WhatsOnStage Award for Best Actor in a Play.

Radcliffe starred as the main antagonist, Walter Tressler Mabry in Now You See Me: The Second Act. In November 2014, the film was officially titled Now You See Me: 2 and was released on June 10, 2016.

In November 2015, he joined the ensemble cast of Shane Carruth's third film, The Modern Ocean alongside Anne Hathaway , Keanu Reeves , Tom Holland , Chloe Grace Moretz , Asa Butterfield , Jeff Goldblum and Abraham Attah . Around the same year he also starred as Rockstar Games co-founder Sam Houser in the BBC docudrama The Gamechangers , which was a dramatised account of the controversies faced by Rockstar Games and their Grand Theft Auto video game franchise.

In November 2023 , Radcliffe released a documentary film about his former stunt double David Holmes which he produced, titled David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived on Max . [6] [7]

Behind the scenes [ ]

  • Before the Harry Potter films, Radcliffe starred in David Copperfield as young David Copperfield with Maggie Smith as Betsey Trotwood . It was, after seeing this movie that Chris Columbus discovered the young boy and knew that he would be the perfect Harry.
  • Radcliffe's on-screen first kiss was not Harry's kiss with Cho Chang , played by Katie Leung in Order of the Phoenix , but was with Teresa Palmer in the Australian film December Boys , which had been filmed earlier.
  • In the "Seven Potters" scene of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 , Radcliffe also played Ronald Weasley , Hermione Granger , Fred Weasley , George Weasley , Fleur Delacour and Mundungus Fletcher . According to Radcliffe, the scene took 96 takes to shoot.
  • Radcliffe's character, Harry, has green eyes when in fact Radcliffe has blue eyes. This is due to the fact that Radcliffe cannot stand wearing contact lenses. Ironically, Rupert Grint has green eyes while his character, Ron , has blue eyes.
  • Radcliffe can rotate his arm in a 360 degree angle.
  • Radcliffe's favourite colour is yellow.
  • Radcliffe said the third book was his favourite.
  • Radcliffe's character in the 2011 film The Woman in Black was played by Adrian Rawlins in the 1989 film The Woman in Black . Rawlins plays his father in the Harry Potter films.
  • Radcliffe starred alongside Ciaran Hinds in The Woman in Black , who portrayed Aberforth Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 .
  • During the days when they were shooting the early films, both Radcliffe and Rupert Grint had a crush on Emma Watson .
  • Radcliffe knows all of the elements in the periodic table and has the ability to sing Tom Lehrer's song, "The Elements". [8]
  • Radcliffe can count to three with his tongue, which he once demonstrated in Ellen DeGeneres' talk show.
  • Radcliffe did an impressive 'Blackalicious' rap on the Jimmy Fallon Show, as of April 2020, the video garnered over 102 million views. [9]
  • Heyman spotted Radcliffe in a theatre audience at a West End production of Stones In His Pockets . Radcliffe, already an actor, had been on the casting director's wish list from the start but his parents had turned down the audition. "I didn't pay any attention to the play, I was just looking at this boy," Heyman recalled. "He had big round eyes and an air of an old soul in a young body."
  • On the wall of Heyman's Soho office is a poster for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone , signed by its three young stars. If proof were needed that the actors and their characters are not dissimilar:

"You're a WICKED producer!" writes Grint. "To David, thank you is not a strong enough word for my gratitude," is Watson's neatly written message. And from Daniel Radcliffe? "Thank goodness I went to the theatre. Love, Dan." [10]

  • In 2008, Radcliffe revealed that he had a mild form of the neurological disorder developmental coordination disorder. The motor skill disorder sometimes prevented him from doing simple activities, such as writing or tying his own shoelaces. "I was having a hard time at school, in terms of being crap at everything, with no discernible talent," Radcliffe commented.
  • In August 2010, Radcliffe stopped drinking alcohol after finding himself becoming too reliant on it.
  • In 2012, Radcliffe revealed he was undergoing cluster headaches at a press conference in France. The A-list actor revealed in 2014 that he was prescribed the high-blood pressure medication in a bid to control the longrunning issue and also underwent regular electrocardiograms to monitor his heart. [11]
  • In April 2023, Radcliffe became a father for the first time when his partner, actress Erin Darke, gave birth to a baby boy. [12]
  • Both Radcliffe ( Harry Potter ) and Emma Watson ( Hermione Granger ) speak in Modernised Received Pronunciation, an accent associated with prestige and wealth, but in the story, most characters that speak in RP are pure-bloods .
  • Radcliffe said in an interview that Daphne de Beistegui , who plays his on-screen daughter Lily L. Potter , kind of "adopted him as her father" when they were on set. [13]
  • The actor has expressed his excitement over the upcoming Harry Potter TV series, however when asked in a quick interview with E! News at the Drama League Awards if he would appear in it, he replied with "I don't think so" and added "I think they very wisely want to [have] a clean break. And I don't know if it would work to have us do anything in it." [14] [15]
