The peanut butter and jelly sandwich (affectionately called a PB&J) is a tasty American staple and makes a quick, easy lunch or snack . [1] X Research source You can have it the traditional way or you can get creative put lots of fun, tasty treats in it. See Making a Basic Sandwich to get started with your delicious sandwich!

Ingredients

  • Bread (usually one or two slices per sandwich )
  • Peanut butter
  • Jelly or jam

Making a Basic Sandwich

Step 1 Collect your ingredients.

  • Lots of types of peanut butter come with lots of added sugar and partially hydrogenated oils that are bad for your health. [2] X Research source If you're looking for a healthier option, try an organic peanut butter. Ideally, peanut butter should only contain peanuts and no other ingredients, like sugar or salt. Natural peanut butter may have a layer of oil on top, but if you carefully stir it in when you open the jar and then keep the jar of peanut butter in the refrigerator, the oil will not separate out again. You can also store the jar upside down to prevent separation.
  • There are lots and lots of flavors for jellies and jams. The two most commonly used are grape and strawberry. However, you could branch out to a sharper taste like raspberry, or a mixture of several different kinds.
  • For your bread you'll probably want something that doesn't overwhelm your other flavors (like a rye or sourdough), so you'll probably want to use white bread. [3] X Research source
  • Stir your peanut butter beforehand to soften it and make it easier to spread on the bread slice. Another tip for spreading peanut butter, especially the kind with peanuts in it, is to put some of the peanut butter in a bowl and microwave it on high for about 20 seconds. It will spread on the bread like soft butter.
  • If you do use butter, you'll put the butter on the same slice of bread as the peanut butter before you put the peanut butter on.

Step 6 Enjoy your easy and yummy looking sandwich!

Getting Creative

Step 1 Add crunch.

  • You could also try using biscuits instead of bread, because the peanut butter and jelly would spread really nicely and there would be a little different taste.

Step 4 Use french toast for the bread.

  • Mix together cinnamon, egg, milk, and brown sugar. Dip your slices of bread into the mixture, making sure you don't coat it too much. Put bread in skillet and cook for a couple of minutes. Flip the bread and cook a couple more minutes. Remove from skillet and spread with peanut butter and jelly and return to skillet, cooking for about a minute on medium heat. Put on plate, cut in half, and eat! [8] X Research source

Step 5 Use banana bread...

  • If too much time goes by between the application of the jelly and consumption, the jelly can soak into the bread and make it soggy. So, if you plan on enjoying your creation later on, spread peanut butter on both sides then spread the jelly in the middle, thereby protecting the bread from being made soggy by the jelly. Be sure to spread the peanut butter thinner than usual. A very thin layer of softened butter spread on the bread before the jelly or jam will also help keep the bread from getting soggy. Serious Eats / Jordan Provost

The Ingredients

Strategies to ward off sogginess.

I beg your pardon, but you'll have to allow me a second to process what I'm realizing is an existential moment for me. Apparently today, right now—this second—is the point in my career when I sit down to write about how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Is this how Orson Welles felt when he had to deliver, straight-faced and in his trademark erudite tone, an endorsement for junky supermarket wine? Who am I kidding—he was compensated way better and was at least able to get drunk on that gig. Here I am, sober as a stone and (I'm willing to admit) no Orson Welles. But if Orson could buck up and do it, so can I, so let's go!

The PB&J is as American as it gets, and its story is spread across the internet from web page to web page as if by digital butter knife, each as recognizable to the next as the sandwich itself. I'll spare you too much of a regurgitation here, except in the broadest strokes: It supposedly started as a fancy-ish tea sandwich at the turn of the 20th century, but quickly became a popular lunchtime snack as an increasingly industrialized food system made sliced bread and store-bought jam and peanut butter a common and affordable option to Americans of all economic stripes.

Eventually the PB&J was the brown-bag lunch item to beat; it certainly was when I was a kid in the 80s. I have to imagine it rose in the packed-lunch ranks at least in part because none of its ingredients are prone to spoilage. Little Timmy's sandwich could sit unrefrigerated in his public schoolroom cubby until he finished his numerals, recitations, and spitball attacks for the day and finally got around to shoving the forgotten sandwich into his mouth on the way home. There's a Norman Rockwell of this scene, or at least there ought to be.

Unfortunately for the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, those heights could only last so long before an eventual decline, something that Orson Welles and I understand all too well. As good as the ol' pea-bur was at not giving you a nasty case of the runny peanut-butters, it was just as good at sending unfortunately allergic kiddos into anaphylactic shock. Plus, we all became aware that a sandwich packed with that much sugar probably isn't the best to eat daily.

No matter the trend cycle, the PB&J is still a delicious sandwich, and one that brings back pleasant childhood memories for those of us lucky enough not to have been raised on SunButter. I'm sure you can guess that, as simple as the sandwich is, I still have a few things to say about what goes into making a good one. I know you all do too—we asked you, our readers, on Instagram what makes a great PB&J tick and y'all did not disappoint. Actually, I take that back. You did disappoint. Because, while the responses were numerous, they were exceedingly thin on insight. "Ratio," my friends, is not a sufficient answer. But thank you anyway.

So let's talk about PB&Js and ratios and which sides should be slathered with what in a bit more detail. I don't really think I'm going to teach you anything useful, but it'll be fun trying.

This section is here because Google seems to think recipe headnotes are better with it. I tell you, I wake up every morning and say, "Thank the Lord for the how much better the tech industry has made our cultural output ! I definitely don't miss the days when people just wrote cool stuff." Anyway, you need:

  • peanut butter - and!–

I trust you to pick the peanut butter and jam* you prefer, and to infer that this recipe involves bread despite me not listing it. Because I still have faith in this audience.

*Did you catch that? Yeah, that little switcheroo is because the correct answer is jam. Strawberry jam, if you asked me, but...did anyone ask for any of this?

(Marginally useful tip buried at the bottom because I'm on a tear: A little sprinkling of salt in the sandwich goes a long way, don't skip it.)

Alright, let's actually get into something substantive: the relative amounts of substance in this sandwich. I ran a few tests, if smearing peanut butter and jam on some bread and eating it can be called a "test." I tried three ratios of peanut butter to jam: twice as much peanut butter to jam; the same amount of each; and twice as much jam as peanut butter. This can also be described using the advanced mathematical notation of: 1:2, 1:1, 2:1.

To my taste, either equal parts or more jam than peanut butter is better, though double the amount of jam to peanut butter is a bit much. My personal preference is right in the middle, about 50% more jam than peanut butter by volume, but if that's too sweet for you, a 1:1 ratio will work too. But also, please don't measure, this is a freaking PB&J.

This ratio is scaled specifically to a standard slice of supermarket sandwich bread, which takes me to my next observation: Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches do not scale well. I had visions going into this of taking a beautiful loaf of shokupan and slicing gloriously thick slabs from it, smearing those with lusty amounts of peanut butter and jelly and just gettin' personal with it. Then I did it and wow was it a bad idea . The problem is that as you add to the amount of bread in the sandwich, you need to also increase the filling quantities to prevent each bite from being too bready, and that leads to adding too much peanut butter.

Too much peanut butter—as any person who's tried to silence their midnight hunger as quickly as possible with a whopping spoonful of peanut butter knows—is a very real, very serious thing. I don't just mean this on a taste level, I mean it on a medical level. Too much peanut butter will glue your mouth shut, cause you to gag as it cements your tongue to your soft palate, and eventually kill you. There is nothing pleasant, or even safe, about an oversized PB&J. For your own longevity, I urge you to stick with standard slices of sandwich bread and the appropriate quantities of peanut butter and jam that go with them.

If there is one technical challenge to a peanut butter and jelly, it's the dreaded soggy bread, an issue that can turn a lovely little packed lunch into gags of revulsion. The most common solution to this is to put peanut butter on both slices of bread and the jam in the middle, so that the peanut butter acts as a buffer between the jam and the bread. Another tactic is to toast or griddle the bread to crisp the exterior and delay sogginess.

I set up another little "test" where I made sandwiches with bread that was toasted in a toaster oven, crisped lightly in oil, and crisped lightly in butter, and for each of those bread preparations I did a double-sided peanut-buttering and a single-sided peanut-buttering. I kept the sandwiches wrapped in plastic baggies, just as they might be in a packed lunch, and tasted them every 2 hours over the course of the day to see how they held up. Here's what I found:

Bread toasted in a toaster oven made a pleasant enough sandwich when eaten right away, with some added texture from the surface dehydration of the bread slices and slight Maillard flavor development from a light toasting. I don't really prefer this to a PB&J made with fluffy and fresh bread, but it's fine. Dry-toasted bread held up the worst over time, growing increasingly stale as the sandwich sat. I would rather pull a soggy sandwich from a lunch bag than one of these.
Toasting the bread in a skillet with just a fine sheen of neutral oil made it possible to crisp the surface without introducing any off flavors. The result when eaten fresh was bread that had a light crispness that gave way to a fluffy interior. But it also had a slightly oily texture that didn't really help things. This sandwich held up well over the course of the day: The bread never got soggy, nor did it grow stale. But as it sat and got cold, that oily texture on the surface of the bread became more noticable. The result was alright, but I wasn't totally sold on it.
Griddling the bread in butter until lightly golden is undeniably delicious, and makes for a fancier PB&J when eaten fresh. The caveat is that it also makes a damned rich PB&J. I wouldn't want to eat a whole one of these, but a mini version is kinda fun, if you want to do something mildly cheffy. Nothing good happens as the butter-griddled sandwich sits. The butter congeals in ways the neutral oil doesn't, leading to a pretty gross sandwich that's also too rich.
As mentioned, I tested this out with all of the above toasting and griddling preparations of bread as well as on plain fresh slices. When eaten fresh, this method makes no difference, because sogginess takes time when jam and jelly are involved. In my samples, the sogging of bread was a slow and gradual affair. I tried them all at two hours, then again at four, and finally at the six-hour mark. Through most of those tastings, none of my sandwiches were all that soggy, so it didn't matter much (worth noting, I used my preferred strawberry jam, not something wetter like—shivers!—grape jelly). By six hours, there was some sign that the one-sided sandwiches were beginning to feel the effects of their direct exposure to the jam, while the double-sided peanut-buttered sandwiches weren't. So yeah, it's a good little insurance policy if you think your sandwich is going to sit for a while.

The takeaway? Toasting/griddling bread is mostly not worth it, but putting peanut butter on both slices of bread can be.

Is any of this a shock?

K, I'm ready to leave it there. Scroll down for the recipe if you want, but don't get your hopes up. It's peanut butter and jelly. You can do this all by yourself.

Recipe Details

Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Recipe

Ingredients.

  • 2 slices sandwich bread (see notes)
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter, plus more if desired
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons jelly or jam, plus more if desired
  • Flaky sea salt or kosher salt, if desired

Evely spread the peanut butter on both slices of bread. Evely spread the jam or jelly on one of the peanut-buttered slices.

If desired, sprinkly jam/jelly with salt, then close sandwich and serve or pack for lunch.

Toast the bread, if desired. Regular toast using a toaster oven works well if eating the sandwich right way, but in our tests, we found that it grew overly firm and stale as the day progressed, so it's less ideal for a packed lunch. Alternatively, you can lightly griddle the bread in butter or neutral oil, though again please note that bread griddled in butter is not as delicious once the bread has cooled and the butter had congealed, so not ideal for a packed lunch.

How to Make a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich : Did you know that there’s a certain way to make a pb&j even better? It’s true. Keep reading!

peanut butter and jelly sandwiches stacked on top of one another

Do you know that 2400 people search google a month, asking:

How do you make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?

It’s true! But I love it because even though there are many tricks and different ways to make one, I’m sharing my favorite way with you today. So keep reading because you may find one of my favorite tricks is your new favorite!

However, if you’re wanting the best way to make a peanut butter and jelly, you’ll love this fried pb&j and may never go back.

What is the correct way to make a peanut butter and jelly?

My mind was blown the other day when I stumbled upon a post on Facebook of someone arguing with another person when asked,

“What is the correct way to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?”

…and I promise you, there were hundreds… HUNDREDS of comments on this thread of people backing one another up, arguing with who was right, wrong and why.

But I’ll tell you… I DID learn something from that thread and even though there’s a part of me that wishes I had that 15 minutes of my life back, I kind of feel like I owe it to those who taught me something that day.

So here are TWO of the most popular ways to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich:

  • Apply peanut butter to both sides first and then jelly on top of both peanut buttered sides – Why? Because that way it keeps the jelly from soaking through the bread, especially if you’re making a pb&j for someone to take with them for the day, and they can’t eat it until later. (School, work, field trip, etc.) Ok ok… so that’s something I didn’t know until I spent 15 minutes of my one life here on Earth, reading these Facebook comments.
  • Apply peanut butter to one side and jelly to the other – Why? Because the jelly sticks MUCH better to the sandwich creation, whereas when you put peanut butter on both sides, sometimes it’s hard to get the jelly to stick inside of the sandwich and it can seep out.

So from above, there is no wrong or right way… unless you discuss it in a Facebook group and then someone will surely tell you you’re wrong. However, here’s my favorite tip for making a peanut butter and jelly the best:

Should you use a spoon or knife to spread peanut butter?

A spoon? Hear me out…

Our assignment in college was to prepare a speech on giving a tutorial for the class. I remember one speech — and one speech only — from that day, and it wasn’t mine. A fellow classmate stood up and said,

“Today I’m going to teach you how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.”

We all chuckled because we didn’t know how he was going to make an entire speech on this topic. But to my surprise, my classmate taught me something that day. I was making a peanut butter and jelly ALL wrong.

Ingredients:

You only need three ingredients to make a classic peanut butter and jelly.

  • peanut butter (Crunchy or creamy)
  • jelly (Your favorite flavor. We prefer strawberry or grape.)
  • bread (White, wheat, or your favorite type of bread.)

How do you make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich better?

I’ll show you below what I learned that day, and how it changed my peanut butter and jelly sandwich making life.

If only I would have known back then that in 15 years I’d have little boys at home who want a pb&j every single day for lunch, I’d probably give that guy a big hug.

hand spreading peanut butter on bread with spoon

1. Use a Spoon:

So many people that I know use a butter knife to spread their peanut butter and jelly, and it rips their bread and gets so messy.

  • A spoon scoops the peanut butter and jelly out easier than a knife.
  • Using the back of the spoon, spread the peanut butter and jelly onto each piece of bread.

I promise, if you’re still using a butter knife to make your pb&j’s, use a spoon next time to see if it works better for you. It’s just one of those little life hacks that is so simple, but incredibly helpful!

hand using spoon to spread jelly on bread

Place the two pieces of bread together, making sure the peanut butter and jelly are touching.

2. Criss-Cross Cuts:

With a house full of little boys, I’ve learned that cutting their sandwiches diagonal both ways helps keep the mess down. Their little hands hold on to the small triangles MUCH easier than a whole sandwich, or even half of a sandwich.

If you choose to cut this way:

  • Cut from corner to corner, in a diagonal way, twice.

If you can’t have peanut butter, you may love this almond butter recipe !

You can also use something such as Nutella or even omit the peanut butter completely or even the jelly!

What is Your Favorite Way to Make a PB&J?

When we had a big family gathering a few weeks ago, and I was thinking about this blog post… I asked everyone in the room how they make and prefer their pb&j. It was hilarious how different everyone prefers a simple pb&j.

  • The crust cut off
  • Mix together peanut butter & jelly and then apply to the bread
  • Eat whole, cut diagonally or cut down the middle
  • Fried (That’s my husband’s favorite way, and I’ve shared how to make a fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich !)
  • Peanut butter with syrup or honey instead of jelly

Ingredients

  • ▢ 2 slices bread white, wheat or favorite type of bread
  • ▢ 1 tablespoon peanut butter creamy or crunchy
  • ▢ 1 tablespoon jelly or jam – any flavor

Instructions

  • Using a spoon, scoop about a tablespoon of peanut butter and simply spread on one slice of bread. After the majority of the peanut butter is on the bread, turn the spoon over, and using the back of the spoon, spread the peanut butter to the corners. (Using a knife for this can cut the bread and tear it.)
  • Using a different spoon (or clean the first one) scoop about a tablespoon of jelly or jam, and pour on to the other slice of bread, and spread to the edges using the back of the spoon, as you did with the peanut butter.
  • Place the peanut butter bread and the jelly bread together, so the peanut butter and jelly are touching. Enjoy!
  • If desired, cut in to half or cut in to 4 small triangular shapes.

If you’re worried about accidentally tearing the bread, maybe you should rethink your choice of bread. Cheap breads do tear easily. Either that or don’t put so much peanut butter on the bread. I’ve used knives before and haven’t had any problems with tearing the bread. I imagine that a spoon might hold the ingredients in place better, but a knife is more ideal for spreading the peanut butter and the jelly on the bread. I also put the jelly on top of the peanut butter when making a sandwich and wipe any excess peanut butter and jelly on the blank slice of bread if it’s just peanut butter and jelly on my sandwich. If I add other ingredients, then the jelly goes on the other slice of bread, with excess peanut butter also getting wiped onto it. Within the past two years, I’ve taken a liking to adding banana slices and honey on my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and mmm mmm, they are delicious! I’m even eating one right now! *takes a bite* Mmm, so good.

You’re welcome. Brownberry Whole Grains 100% Whole Whea is my go-to bread, and while soft, it’s also sturdy. I have never had a slice of this bread tear while spreading anything on it. Jif is also my go-to peanut butter, although I prefer their Natural Creamy variety. I also use Smucker’s jams and jellies, with four of their Simply Fruit flavors – Seedless Black Raspberry, Seedless Blackberry, Concord Grape and Seedless Red Raspberry Spreadable Fruit – and their Natural line’s Concord Grape Fruit Spread being my favorite jelly flavors to pair with peanut butter. Stick a layer of Aunt Sue’s Raw and Unfiltered Wildflower Honey between two layers of Jif Natural Creamy peanut butter, place a sliced banana on top of the second layer of peanut butter all on one slice of bread, spread jelly on the other slice of bread, place the jelly-covered bread on top of the peanut butter, honey and banana-covered bread, gently press the two slices together, serve the remainder of the banana as a side item, pour a glass of milk, and you have a meal that is certainly delicious, undoubtedly nutritious, and definitely filling. You won’t be hungry again for hours after eating one. I’m even eating one right now. Jif Natural Creamy peanut butter, Aunt Sue’s Raw and Unfiltered Wildflower Honey, a sliced Chiquita banana and Smucker’s Simply Fruit Seedless Blackberry Spreadable Fruit, all brought together between two slices of Brownberry Whole Grains 100% Whole Wheat Bread. *takes a bite* Mmm, great sandwich! Feel free to try it yourself.

I have actually started using a larger spoon for scooping out the peanut butter as the jar starts to run low. Which is something that I don’t think that I would have considered if I hadn’t happened upon this blog entry. I emptied one earlier while making the PBHBJ sandwich I am eating right now and I got the vast majority of what remained of the peanut butter out of the jar and onto the bread. I still use a knife for spreading, but when the jar runs empty, I will definitely reach for a spoon to get the good stuff out. Thank you so much for suggesting this! *offers you a bite of my peanut butter, honey, banana and jelly sandwich*

Haha! That’s interesting! I’ll have to see if my kiddos want to try it that way next time! 🙂

My kids are teenagers and I still struggle with this!! Just last night in fact—the bread was extra soft which made it extra hard to spread without tearing. But, what I heard a while back is that you should spread the jelly on TOP of the peanut butter—not on the other piece of bread. It will spread easier and not tear the bread. Now, I don’t really do this, because I think “what if I have to go back into the jelly jar? Then there’s peanut butter on my knife (now it will be a spoon) already and it will contaminate my jelly jar 🙂 Of course, this is easily solved by grabbing another knife/spoon, but why make things easy? 🙂

Haha!!!! I love that you shared this Traci! I always freak out about using the same spoon for both too, but never want to use an additional spoon. LOL!! Why do we do this to ourselves!? 🙂

I used a spoon last night! Heck, I went for it and used TWO spoons…I will never go back to a knife. And I will teach my kids to do the same. At 14 and 18 they really should be making their own lunches anyway 🙂 Thank you!

How to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich

how to make a pb&j sandwich essay

By Maggie Downs

  • Gather your ingredients. You’ll need peanut butter, jelly, the bread of your choice, and a clean, sharp knife.
  • Spread peanut butter evenly onto one side of the bread using your knife. Acknowledge the fact that the winner of our constitutionally legitimate but antiquated electoral process is a person who threatens democracy on a daily basis. As Ian Millhiser of ThinkProgress says on Medium , “To declare him illegitimate is to shake the foundations of the American system, but to fail to do so is to risk leveling those foundations to the ground.” Our entire system is under assault. We must be clear about that.
  • Wash your knife before dipping it into the jelly jar. Slow down, pay attention, remain alert. These thoughts pulse through your body so often they have become a mantra, suffusing even the mundanities of everyday life. Accept that resistance is a part of you now, because it has to be.
  • Spread jelly evenly onto the other slice of bread. Strengthen your resolve. Defend journalists. Subscribe to newspapers and magazines. Do your own research. Read books and literature for valuable historical context. Call your elected officials and use your voice while you still have one. Learn from those in other countries. Defend facts. “To abandon facts is to abandon freedom,” says Yale history professor Timothy Snyder in his guide to defending democracy . “If nothing is true, then no one can criticize power, because there is no basis upon which to do so. If nothing is true, then all is spectacle.”
  • Press the two slices of bread together. Recognize that in order to prevent the next Donald Trump, we must find fierce leaders who are not just willing to reject the damaging policies from the last few decades, but those who will actively pass progressive legislation that furthers equality, strengthens civil liberties, and works to the benefit of every American, particularly those in marginalized groups.
  • Cut the sandwich diagonally to form triangles. Enjoy! Know that without pushing the lever of justice forward, there is no victory. Without addressing the culture that brought us Trump, we are simply waiting for the next deranged figure to rise to power. Without hacking away at the roots of white supremacy, authoritarianism, and xenophobia, that toxic plant can bloom again.
  • Hang on to the knife.

Essay title: To Make a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich

To make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich you must follow these steps in order. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are delicious and can be eaten as a snack or as a meal. Some people have a unique way of making these sandwiches, I am going to show readers how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich my way.

First, you must acquire the materials needed for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. To get the materials needed you will have to go to the grocery store for most of the materials. These materials are two slices of pre-sliced bread any brand you prefer, a butter knife, a jar of smooth peanut butter, a jar of strawberry jelly, a hard and clean flat surface, someone who is going to make the sandwich, and a regular knife. Drive to the grocery store in a car or you can take the bus. Once you have arrived at the grocery store you must go into the grocery store and go to the bread aisle. Choose either the best price of bread or whatever brand you prefer. After obtaining the bread walk to the aisle where the jelly is at, get a strawberry flavored jelly. When you have the bread and the jelly, go to the aisle where the peanut butter is kept and get the smooth kind not the crunchy kind. If you want to commit a crime walk out of the store without paying, but if you don't want to commit a crime go to the cashier or self-checkout and pay for the items you want. Then, go to your kitchen, if you are already not there, and find a butter knife and a regular knife. These objects will most likely be found with the rest of your utensils. Or if you cannot find any of these items you can always improvise and use a spoon or you can go to the grocery store and buy plastic utensil by going down the aisle where the employees keep the plastic utensils and pay the total for the utensils.

After obtaining the required materials, you must take the bread out of the bag in which it comes in. Pull out two slices of pre-sliced bread out of the bread bag, but make sure it is not the end slices of the loaf. After pulling out the slices place them both on the hard, clean flat surface. Set the slice aside on the clean surface. You will return to the slices later.

Then, the opening of the jelly and peanut butter comes next. You first open the jar of jelly by placing the hand you use to write with and place it on top of the lid. Then you grip the lid with your writing and with your other hand hold the jar. Pull with the hand you usually do not write with clockwise, and with your writing hand pull counter-clockwise. You will feel the lid loosen from the jar continue twisting off the lid from the jar until it is completely off the jar, and place the jar on the surface and put the lid aside from the jar on the hard surface. Repeat this process to remove the lid of the peanut butter jar.

To keep things organized you must have the materials in the correct position on the flat surface. I would prefer the slices of bread be on the top corner of the opposite side of your writing hand. Place the Butter knife and the regular knife on the side of your writing hand. The jar of peanut butter and jelly should be relatively near the slices of bread. If you have your material in these positions, making your peanut butter and jelly sandwich will be easier.

Now, you will finally begin making your peanut butter and jelly sandwich my way. You begin by taking the regular

Describe How To Make A Pb And J Sandwich

Making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is a straightforward process that requires minimal ingredients and equipment. To begin, gather the necessary items: two slices of bread, peanut butter, jelly or jam, and a butter knife. Ensure that the bread is fresh and soft, as it will enhance the overall texture of the sandwich.

Start by laying out the two slices of bread on a clean surface. Using the butter knife, scoop out a generous amount of peanut butter onto one slice of bread. Spread the peanut butter evenly across the surface, ensuring that it reaches the edges for consistent flavor in each bite. Adjust the amount of peanut butter based on personal preference, whether desiring a thick or thin layer.

Next, it's time to add the jelly or jam. Using the same knife, scoop out the desired amount of jelly and spread it onto the second slice of bread. Similar to the peanut butter, spread the jelly evenly to ensure a balanced taste throughout the sandwich. Some may prefer more jelly for a sweeter flavor, while others may opt for a lighter spread.

Once both slices of bread are evenly coated with peanut butter and jelly, carefully place them together, with the peanut butter and jelly sides facing each other. Press down gently to seal the sandwich and prevent the filling from spilling out. If desired, the crusts can be trimmed off for a neater presentation, although this step is optional.

Finally, the sandwich is ready to be enjoyed. Cut it diagonally for a classic presentation or leave it whole for convenience. Pair it with a glass of milk or your favorite beverage for a satisfying snack or meal. The combination of creamy peanut butter and sweet jelly between two slices of bread creates a timeless and delicious treat that appeals to all ages.

5 Easy Ways To Give Your PB&J Sandwich Some Crunch

The classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich has a deep history that dates back to 1901. It really only requires three ingredients: bread, peanut butter, and jelly. But from there, the sandwich can be effortlessly customized to match your preferences. You can use strawberry jelly or grape jelly, creamy or crunchy peanut butter, and you can spread the toppings on a variety of different breads — which can even be swapped out for waffles . For another twist, you can reinvent the lunchtime favorite -- known for its typically smooth and luxurious sweet-meets-savory filling -- by making it delightfully crunchy and more flavorfully complex.

For starters, if you want to maintain the core ingredients while still adding some crispness, try grilling the sandwich or assembling it on toasted bread. You could also ditch the jelly entirely, or, take some inspiration from Elvis Presleywith rashers of crispy bacon.

There a number of ways to riff on the nostalgic sandwich and elevate your eating experience with maximum crunch -- and it's more than just a textural upgrade. According to gastrophysicist Charles Spence, Ph.D., in conversation with  Mental Floss , "Sound affects the experience of food. The noise draws attention to the mouth in the way something silent does not." So, if you're looking for ways to add crunchiness and character to your peanut butter and jelly sandwich, here are a handful of ideas for tasty inspiration.

Banana Chips Take Things In A Tropical Direction

Banana and peanut butter are a match made in heaven. In fact, it has long been a popular smoothie combination or breakfast toast topping. But what about banana chips? Banana chips are crunchy, dehydrated slices of banana that can be commonly found in grocery stores. By adding them to your peanut butter and jelly sandwich, you can introduce a new flavor to the meal, as well as a crunchy experience. There are options for how this ingredient can be added to the sandwich.

As it falls in the fruit category with jellies and jams, you can simply add the banana chips between the peanut butter and jelly, or you can substitute the jelly for the banana chips — of course, the texture will be a bit drier and the taste less sweet. However, you can enhance and sweeten a peanut butter and banana chips sandwich with a drizzle of honey.

Different Types Of Nuts Offer Different Levels Of Crunch

Is crunchy peanut butter just not crunchy enough? No problem, try adding a handful of nuts to the sandwich. Much like the banana chips option, this ingredient can be used with jelly or in place of jelly, whichever your heart desires.

Simply add the nuts on top of the peanut butter when making the sandwich and then top it with the other slice of bread, or gently crush them up first. When it comes to adding nuts to the sandwich, choose ones that have a distinct flavor and texture, like almonds, pecans, and walnuts, so that they add to the overall experience of the sandwich and stand out from the more traditional taste and consistency of crunchy peanut butter.

Add Bacon Or Bacon Bits

Channel your inner Elvis Presley by adding a few pieces of crispy bacon — which tastes good with everything — to the sandwich! The infamous Fool's Gold Loaf is a sandwich created by cook Nick Andurlakis at the now-closed Colorado Mine Company. The dish is well known for being  the late rock icon's real favorite sandwich .

The sandwich is traditionally made on a loaf of sourdough bread that is covered in butter and placed in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until golden brown. Then, the loaf is sliced horizontally and hollowed out before being topped with entire jars of peanut butter and jelly, along with 1 pound of crispy bacon. The bacon not only adds crunch, but it brings out the saltiness of the peanut butter — and the jelly ensures a sweet complementary kick. For an easier take on this dish, just add bacon bits to your classic PB&J.

Make Your PB&J Pop With Potato Chips

This option is for those feeling a bit more adventurous:  top your PB&J with potato chips . Now, it is a common practice to put potato chips in between the layers of a cold, savory sandwich, particularly one with deli meat or loaded with vegetables. But who said you have to stop there? Try adding a delicious, potatoey crunch to your peanut butter and jelly by adding a layer of plain potato chips in between the two core namesake ingredients. Or if you want to try a new flavor profile, you can use a flavored potato chip, like a cheddar and sour cream potato chip. Jam and cheeses pair together on a charcuterie board, so why wouldn't it work on a sandwich?

Snappy Chocolate Chips Lend Some Personality To PB&J

Who doesn't like dessert for lunch? (And if you think you don't -- don't knock it until you try it.) Add a fun crunch and a sweeter taste to your peanut butter and jelly sandwich by adding a handful of chocolate chips. Similar to the other options, this one can be customized to your taste.

You can use milk chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, or white chocolate chips, and you can decide whether to omit the jelly. Without the jelly, you can channel a Reese's peanut butter cup by adding milk chocolate chips on top of the peanut butter. Or you can experiment with other complementary flavors, like raspberry jelly, peanut butter, and a handful of white chocolate chips. If you don't have chips on hands, chocolate chunks are fine -- you can even break up your favorite chocolate bar. The options are endless when it comes to bringing new life to the classic PB&J!
