Postdoctoral Research

The University of Galway is host to postdoctoral research projects through the Moore Institute , where researchers also have a dedicated office space.

Through the Research Office, the University of Galway supports applications for postdoctoral study from all national and international funding bodies, including (but not limited to) the Irish Research Council and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions .

Daniela Toulemonde, current PhD candidate

“I decided to apply for funding for a PhD because I wanted to continue the research I began in M.A. at NUI Galway. I received a lot of support from my supervisor, Mel Boland, and other lecturers in the Spanish Department during my masters and for all the applications needed. That is how I got the Galway Doctoral Scholarship and then the year after the Irish Research Council Scholarship.

My research focuses on the translation of US drag media into Spanish for Hispanic America. The intersection between Translation Studies and Queer Studies is the main focus, but I am also interested in Latin American queer cultures, and LGBTQ+ historical memory building in Colombia.

In addition to doing research, I have been teaching for the last two years, 2-3 hours a week teaching Spanish and translation and I gave two guest lectures for the module Introduction to Translation Studies about my research topic.”

To be admitted to the PhD programme in economics, you must:

  • Identify, and secure the agreement of, an academic supervisor in economics at University of Galway
  • Explore funding options
  • Submit a research proposal to the Director of the PhD programme in Economics
  • Submit an application through the online Postgraduate Admissions Applications System

Note that only applicants who have a relevant Masters degree may normally be admitted to the structured PhD programme in Economics. Overseas applicants may be required to submit the results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

Step by step

We need to ensure that your coursework and research proposal form an appropriate basis for research, and that a suitable supervisor is available. Students are therefore advised to:

1. Identify, and secure the agreement of, an academic supervisor in economics

We can only accept students for a PhD if an appropriate member of academic staff is available to supervise them. Initial informal enquiries can be made to individual staff directly, or to the director of the PhD programme in Economics.

Prospective students must have identified a supervisor before they apply through the Postgraduate Admissions Applications System.  Students can have one or more supervisors, with joint supervision involving staff from other university departments.‌

2. Explore funding options

Fees are set annually by the Governing Body of the University and therefore, vary from year to year. See University information on fees and funding.

There are a number of sources of funding for PhD studies, including University of Galway studentships and fellowships from external agencies. Academic staff in economics at University of Galway have an excellent record in sourcing competitive funding, from a range of sources, to support research. Your supervisor will be of help in preparing a proposal to a funding agency. The PhD research proposal is often used as the basis as a submission for funding.

  • Learn more about funding options for the PhD in economics

3. Submit a research proposal to the Director of the PhD programme in Economics

Prospective students should develop a proposal with their supervisor, which is submitted directly to the director of the PhD Programme in Economics by email.

Your research proposal must follow the format outlined in this proposal form:

  • PhD Economics Proposal Form

Here are some previous completed proposals (the proposal form may differ somewhat from the current version, but the essentials are much the same):

  • PhD economics proposal sample 1
  • PhD economics proposal sample 2

4. Submit an application through the online Postgraduate Admissions Application System

Apply formally through:

  • Postgraduate Admissions Application System

Further information from:

  • University of Galway Postgraduate Admissions Office
  • University of Galway Research postgraduate programmes

Your application will be formally considered by the Economics PhD Programme Committee and by the J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics for final approval. Note your application will not be reviewed until the director of the PhD Programme in Economics has also received your PhD Economics Proposal Form by email.

Learning Outcomes

Entry requirements.

To be eligible for admission to the PhD programme, a candidate must normally have obtained an LL.M or other Master’s degree to honours standard (or equivalent international qualification). However, at a minimum, the candidate must have reached a high honours standard at the examination for the primary degree or presented such other evidence as will satisfy the Head of School and the College of his/her fitness.

Who’s Suited to This Course

Current research projects, current funded research opportunity, work placement, related student organisations, career opportunities, find a supervisor / phd project.

If you are still looking for a potential supervisor or PhD project or would like to identify the key research interests of our academic staff and researchers, you can use our online portal to help in that search

Current Projects

If you are considering applying for a PhD, you should first prepare a research proposal – see this guidance document for more on what this should contain.

You should also consider how you will fund your studies. The two main sources of scholarships in Galway are the Hardiman scheme and the Irish Research Council Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme . The College of Business, Public Policy and Law, the School of Law and the Research Centres will also sometimes have funding for specific projects from time to time – please check our social media presences to stay up to date on those. In general, individual staff will not have funding for new PhD students and sourcing this is your responsibility.

Areas of expertise include:

  • Human Rights
  • Disability Law
  • Housing Law and Policy
  • Constitutional Law
  • Criminal Law
  • Criminology
  • Refugee and Immigration Law
  • Information Technology Law
  • Lawtech/Legaltech
  • Intellectual Property Law
  • Commercial Law
  • Jurisprudence

Researcher Profiles

Once you have a well-developed proposal and have considered the practicalities, you should review the profiles and expertise of our staff to locate individuals who are a good match for your research proposal. You can also use our  online portal   to help locate a supervisor in a research area. Candidates who are unsure who to contact in relation to supervision, or who wish to obtain more information, should review the current relevant  staff listing or contact Dr. Charles O'Mahony or the School of Law Administration .

A generic message to all staff is unlikely to yield success. Contact an appropriate expert with your proposal and CV, explaining clearly how your project fits with their interests. If your intended supervisor responds positively, they will assist you in finalising your application, which then needs to be submitted through the relevant online platform . Your application will then be considered by the School of Law. Candidates, proposed topic, and intended supervisor of research must be approved by the School.

PhD program at the Centre for Astronomy

Embarking on the journey to obtain a PhD in astrophysics is a serious commitment. This is the premiere way to get into professional astrophysical research as a career. Outside of an academic career, graduates with a PhD in astrophysics are highly regarded as problem solvers, data analysts and IT specialists, which opens a wide variety of lucrative career options in the industrial sector.

The PhD program takes typically 4 years. During these years you will be guided by a staff member of the Centre for Astronomy. The goal of the program is that by the end of the 4 years you are a capable independent researcher. During the program you will learn how to conduct scientific research from the idea for a project all the way to the publication of the results in international scientific journals. You will attend national and international conferences and learn how to communicate your research results to a specialist and non-specialist audience. You will also be involved in teaching and student supervision (with extra remuneration).

The prerequisite for entering the PhD program at the Centre for Astronomy is a completed undergraduate degree in Physics (for example or own Physics program at the University of Galway) or Astronomy, typically with a final grade of at least 2.1 in the Irish system (or equivalent for international applicants).  Alternatively a completed Masters degree in Physics or Astronomy (for example our own Master program at the Centre for Astronomy) is required.

Your first important step is to identify the research area you are most interested in to pursue. The  research page gives an overview of research themes and/or directions within the Centre. If you would like to discuss the possibilities of a PhD project please contact one of our staff members who works on the topic you are most interested in.

Deborah

Deborah Malone |   Postdoctoral Research Associate (Durham University)

My PhD was in Astronomical Instrumentation, focusing on the design and implementation of calibration techniques for telescopes. As part of my research, I was able to participate in an internship at the European Southern Observatory in Garching, Germany, which allowed me to meet and work with the biggest names in the Adaptive Optics community. This opportunity would not have been possible without the good relationship between the Centre for Astronomy and Applied Optics groups at the University of Galway, and ESO.

Notes on Post-Graduate Research Funding

  • Fees:  The University charges fees for postgraduate students, which are outlined  here .
  • College of Science and Engineering Postgraduate Fellowship: These fellowships are awarded by the College of Science and Engineering .  Fellows have the opportunity to get involved into teaching for an extra remuneration during term.
  • Hardiman Research Scholarship: The University of Galway also offers a highly competitive and prestigious scheme which is outlined here . If you are interested to apply, please discuss early on with a potential supervisor.
  • Irish Research Council:  IRC offer an excellent fellowship programme as part of their Embark initiative. The scheme is very competitive and you will almost certainly require a first class honours degree or MSc. If you are interested to apply, please discuss early on with a potential supervisor.
  • Project Specific Funding:  Some supervisors may have research funding for a specific project that can be used to pay postgraduate students. (Funding agencies include HEA, EI, EPA, SFI). Often this support is at the IRC level and may include fees. You should ask individual supervisors if they have such funding, and generally they will advertise the fact. Research funds can also be used to supplement College of Science postgraduate fellowships.
  • Other Funding Sources:  There may be some possibilities for supplementing income by additional laboratory demonstrating, invigilating at exams, giving grinds, etc. However, often these activities are not well paid and you need to be very careful that the involvement does not significantly increase the time it takes you to complete your degree.
