Business Presentations in German – Your Ultimate Vocabulary List

Business Presentations in German – Your Ultimate Vocabulary List

Delivering business presentations is a stressful and challenging task in itself. Even more so if you have to do it in German! In order to help you with this task, we prepared an ultimate list of business German vocabulary and some additional phrases to help you put them in practice. Below you will also find a couple of tips that will help you prepare before the big day comes! We are sure you will rock it!

Some tips for delivering presentations in German

  • Send the agenda beforehand – this will help you make sure that all attendees know what to expect, and have the chance to prepare the right questions, or research the topic in advance.
  • Measure the presentation time – if you have a specific time allocated to your presentation, make sure to measure exactly how long it takes you, and shorten it if you don’t have enough time. German business culture is known for keeping their time and there is no worse thing than having to stop the presentation mid-way due to time constraints!
  • Leave time for questions – don’t assume that everything in your presentation will be crystal clear to your audience. Give them a chance to ask for additional explanations, whether it’s during the presentation itself or right afterwards.
  • Deliver the presentation in front of the mirror, ideally more than once – this exercise, although may seem tedious and uncomfortable, will help you improve the flow and boost your confidence during the actual presentation. Especially if you will be presenting in a foreign language, such as German, it’s a perfect opportunity to polish your grammar and pronunciation before facing the audience.

Learning business German?

Numbers In German From 0 To 1 Billion: Essential List

Numbers In German

Alright, here we go! It’s time to learn numbers in German. Which is just as important as knowing your ABCs or  colors.  This is one of the first steps to learning German, or any new language, for that matter.

Counting is one of the fundamentals of language learning and will help you read and write numbers and speak them. It will help you communicate in Germany while shopping. Knowing numbers in German can make you feel more confident that you’re being charged the correct prices for things. Thankfully, learning German numbers is easy once you get beyond numbers 0-19.

Let’s start learning to count in German and learn the basics and the rules for reading, writing, and speaking numbers in German.

Understand Pronunciation First

Numbers In German Speak Vowels Properly

How To Speak German Vowels Properly

Just like many languages, German uses vowels that, at first glance, seem similar to their English counterparts. However, their pronunciation is quite different and may seem odd or difficult.

We’re looking at German vowel pronunciation because they are an essential part of learning numbers in German. All German numbers have vowels in them.

First, let’s look at the A vowel. It’s common to see it written with two dots above it like this Ä. The two dots indicate a change in sound, and the symbols are called  umlaut.  When you see Ä, it indicates you should make either a long A sound like in ‘gang’ or a long E sound like in ‘seed.’

Next is O. This one is strange because instead of saying oh, you’re going to make the long E sound apparently while keeping your mouth in the same shape as if you were going to make the long O sound. Try it! Ö

Lastly, there’s the long U sound. Ü might seem familiar if you live in North America and have Über. But get this! Americans have the pronunciation completely wrong! The Ü in German doesn’t make a long U sound at all! It makes the long E sound like the word ‘see.’ Funny, right?

How To Pronounce German Diphthongs

Okay, so what on earth is a  diphthong ? Is it a type of flip-flop? Is it some sort of weird underwear? No! It’s when two vowels are joined together to form a single sound or syllable. Here are some diphthongs you must know to read and say numbers in German.

  • IE say it like a long E as in been, keen, seen
  • EI will sound like long I as in mine, fine, dine
  • EU will sound like OI, as in boil, toil, foil

How To Say German Consonants Properly

If you’ve ever studied Spanish before, you’re familiar with how ‘V’ actually sounds like ‘B’. German is similar, and this will take some quick memorization to pick up and apply to learning your numbers in German.

  • Ch is pronounced J
  • H is pronounced J
  • J is pronounced LL
  • PH is pronounced F
  • R is similar to R in French
  • TION is pronounced TSION
  • W is pronounced V
  • V is pronounced F
  • Z is pronounced TS
  • ẞ is pronounced S

Numbers In German 0 to 12

German Numbers From 0 – 12

Okay, now we’re ready to learn German numbers! We’ll start with the first 12 numbers in the German language because they only consist of a single word making them the easiest to practice.

3drei Play
4vier Play
5fünf Play

Numbers In German 13 to 19

German Numbers From 13 To 19

Next up are numbers 13-19 because they all end with the same final sound,  zehn.  Zehn means 10.  The order of these is the unit digit followed by  zehn. It  means that when directly translated, 13 is 3 and 10. Let’s take a look.

13dreizehn Play

Numbers In German Between

What About The Numbers In Between?

How do you say 31 in German or 67? Not to worry, we’ll walk you through a few examples, and we know you’ll pick up on the pattern pretty quickly. If you are familiar with numbers in English, then you’re used to the tens unit being stated before the units place like twenty-one.

However, as you may have noticed, with numbers in German from 13-19, the order is the opposite in the German language. Rather you say one and twenty, and the number is written all as one word – no spaces!

Here are some examples to help you see what we mean:

How To Count In Hundreds In German

Thank goodness learning to count in hundreds in German is really easy! Once you learn the numbers 1-9, this will be easy to memorize. All you need to do is put the German word for numbers 1-9 before the word  hundert,  which, you guessed it – means 100. Take a look.

100hundert Play
200zweihundert Play
300dreihundert Play
400vierhundert Play
500fünfhundert Play
600sechshundert Play

Numbers In German Thousands

Counting By Thousands In German

The exact same rule that applies to counting in hundreds applies to counting in thousands. You just add the word  tausend  after the 1-9 digit.

1000tausend Play
2000zweitausend Play
3000dreitausend Play
4000viertausend Play
5000fünftausend Play

8000achttausend Play

Numbers In German Millions And Billions

Higher Numbers In German

You likely won’t be purchasing anything for these amounts if you are a tourist, but if you’ve settled down and are looking to buy a car, an apartment, or a house, then you’ll definitely need to know the numbers from 10,000 through the millions.

Once again, you’ll see the number organization is the same as counting in 100s or 1000s.

10000zehntausand Play
20000zwanzigtausend Play
100000hunderttausend Play
1000000eine Million Play
2000000zwei Millionen Play
1000000000eine Milliarde Play

Okay, But How Do You Read Other Numbers In German?

If you thought writing numbers in words in other languages was difficult , wait until you see large numbers in German! The words turn into one giant long word that goes on forever. Here’s an example:

What?! Yup, that’s one number. How about another example that’s not too intense:

Finally, another longer example:

Can you tell now where the numbers begin and end in these words? Make that your challenge for the next few moments.

Sentences to start a presentation

I am trying to prepare a presentation. I need to find some good starting sentences. I will present this to my teachers and they won't know the topic of presentation. I should explain it. I used:

Heute möchte ich über ... sprechen. Zuerst möchte ich Ihnen ... erzählen.

What can I use instead of or in addition to this sentences?

  • Welcome to German.SE. Can you describe a bit the setting of this presentation? E.g. a students group is something else than a customer. And the time constraint is also interesting to avoid a long opening or don't care. –  Shegit Brahm Commented Aug 11, 2020 at 19:50
  • Actually it is some kind of homework. I'm gonna present this to my teachers –  Özgür Arslan Commented Aug 11, 2020 at 19:52
  • 1 Please include any clarification into your question. –  Shegit Brahm Commented Aug 11, 2020 at 19:54

"Ich möchte ..." means "I want ..". But nobody is interested in your desires when you start a presentation. People want you to present something. So, better beginnings are:

Heute spreche ich über ... Ich erzähle Ihnen heute etwas über ...

But the audience already knows that you are here to talk to them. So, there is no need to tell them that you talk to them. They are clever enough to realize this very conspicuous fact.

I think the best beginning is a question. There are closed questions that need to be answered with yes or no:

Did you know, that ...?

But much more interesting are open questions: questions that start with "What" or "How" or similar question-words:

What will happen, if ...? How does a ... work?

But even better: include the audience! Ask them what they think:

What do you think will happen, if ...? How do you think does a ... work?

And you can ask the very same questions in any language, also in German:

Was glauben Sie passiert, wenn ...? Wie vermuten Sie, dass ein ... funktioniert?

The audience will be curious about the correct answer to your question. This creates tension, and the audience will listen to you much more interested than if you told them that you want to do something.

At some point in your presentation you will have to give a clear and understandable answer to your question. The best moment is at the end of your presentation. And everything between the initial question and the answer must be a story that leads from one step to the next. Never forget that your presentation is only good if you tell a fascinating and pulsating story. It begins with an interesting question and ends in an surprising answer.

  • 3 the style depends on the context. in more technical contexts, giving structure can greatly help people, especially people new to the topic. I mean something like a list of contents, so that people know what to expect. When a presentation is more for entertainment (something like science slams comes to mind), a pure chaotic joy ride can be very entertaining and starting with an interesting question is definitely right there! –  Benjamin Commented Aug 12, 2020 at 13:56
  • @Benjamin There are two problems with the table of contents. First, as a speaker, you want to get the attention of the audience, and a table of contents is probably the most boring thing that one can put on the first slide. Second, the table of contents may contain notions and concepts that the audience is not even familiar with, and then starting with the table of contents is just pointless. If presenting a table of contents is useful at all, presenting it after an introduction to the topic is typically more effective. –  Uwe Commented Aug 12, 2020 at 17:14

Starting sentences that are never wrong:

Einen schönen guten Tag, ich begrüße Sie recht herzlich zu (Thema). Herzlich willkommen zu (Thema), mein Name ist (Name).

The first words shouldn't have important content, so the audience is able to adjust to your speaking style and your volume (just like when starting a phone call). After you did such a formal sentence go and try your "unique" intro, followed by the overview and your actual presentation.

ZAHLEN und DATUM (numbers and dates in German)

' src=

Content in this post
1. What are numbers?
2. The two categories of numbers and how they are used
3. Simplified tips to help pronounce the German numbers
4. Types of dates in German
5. How to use dates in German

Numbers as it is called in English, just like the Alphabet , are a key aspect of the German language. Numbers are many and indefinite. This means it has no end. They perform a lot of role which ranges from counting, dating and numbering etc. Numbers can either be in a character form otherwise called figure or in word form . There are two categories of numbers in german as listed below;

  • Kardinalzahlen
  • Ordinalzahlen

Cardinal Numbers

Cardinal numbers otherwise known as Kardinalzahlen in German, are nouns although they can be converted to adjectives. As a matter of fact, they are all feminine nouns. Cardinal numbers range from zero to infinity. They are majorly used for counting and totaling. When counting in English, the numbers are usually accompanied with the word number . For example; number one, number two, number three… etc. This in deutsch is translated as Nummer and the examples become Nummer eins, Nummer zwei, Nummer drei… etc.

The first twenty numbers listed below are regarded as the foundation of German numbers. Although all numbers are important, these I consider the most important. This is because once they are perfectly mastered, knowing the rest is no longer difficult. If pronouncing them becomes a challenge, my previous article on how to pronounce a German word would help you.

0ZeroNullNool
1OneEinsEye-nz/ 👀nz
2TwoZweiTsv-eye
3ThreeDreiDry
4FourVierFear
5FiveFünfFew-nf

13ThirteenDreizehnDryts-hen
14FourteenVierzehnFearts-hen
15FifteenFünfzehnFewnfts-hen
16SixteenSechzehnZekts-hen
17SeventeenSiebzehnZibts-hen
18EighteenAchtzehnActs-hen
19NineteenNeunzehnNoynts-hen
20TwentyZwanzigTsvant-sich

**Note that Dreißig is the only number that uses ß at the suffix. This is probably because the preceding and succeeding diphthongs /ei/ and /ig/ are both long sounds. Hence can not permit a short sound such as /z/ or /s/ in between.

From 21 upwards is formed in such a strategic way. The addition of the end-suffix “-zig” which is likened to the English “-ty” makes them kind of similar except that the positioning of the combined number is reversed and uses the conjunction “ und ” where English uses the punctuation mark (-). For example; 21 is pronounced and spelled in English as twenty-one but in German, it becomes “one and twenty ” literally but without any space in between words and the loss of the s from cc eins . Study the list below.

21Twenty-oneEinundzwanzig
22Twenty-twoZweiundzwanzig
23Twenty-threeDreiundzwanzig
24Twenty-fourVierundzwanzig
25Twenty-fiveFünfundzwanzig
26Twenty-sixSechsundzwanzig

60SixtySechzig
70SeventySiebzig
80EightyAchtzig

100(One) hundred(Ein)hundert

From hundred, the German numbers are usually written like in English. Once you have mastered the numbers from 0 to 100, then the rest becomes simpler. All you have to do is simply follow the sequence. Usually in German, the and that links the hundred to the next number in English is omitted. Hence, 101 which is written in English as one hundred and one, becomes written as (Ein)hunderteins and not (Ein)hundertundeins in German. Remember not to add space between each word. Observe the sequence below.

**Note that the first Ein is optional to use. Einhundert und Eintausend can also be written as Hundert and Tausend respectively.

Ordinal Numbers

They are obtained from Cardinal numbers and are often converted to adjectives and subsequently back to substantive nouns. The range from 1 to infinity. This category of numbers can be used for dating, marking anniversaries and birthdays and equally allocating numbering to individuals. When ordinal numbers are used as adjectives and/or substantive nouns, they must be declined like every other adjective.

Ordinal numbers in German can be expressed in two ways just like in English. They can either be expressed in figures or in words. In figures, ordinal numbers are indicated by placing a dot (.) directly in front of the number. This is equivalent to the superscript “st, nd, rd and th” that are placed above numbers in English. In words, ordinal numbers in German are spelled out like in English.

The first 19 ordinal numbers in German are formed by adding t at the end of the corresponding Cardinal number while from 20 to 99 are rather formed by adding st with exception of the first, third, seventh and seventieth number which are formed uniquely before they are correctly declined using the proper adjective-ending with regards to the grammatical case.

**Note that einhundert and eintausend don’t require a “t” before they ar e declined.

Dates in German are of two types namely;

  • Date of the days & months
  • Date of the century

Date of the days & months is used for occasions such as wedding anniversary, birthdays, appointments making etc. This date usually makes use of ordinal numbers and they are adjectives. It can either be written in full form or in an abbreviated form and in words or in figures. When the are written in figures and abbreviated in words, they are punctuated with a full stop (.) .

**Note that when this kind of date is written in figures, it is usually in twos. That is, second is written as 02 while January is 01. Nevertheless, in spoken German, it is used as on digit where January is simply 1 and second is 2.

English Illustration Illustration
1. “The Party is on Monday the first of may” can be written in three ways as;Die Party ist am Montag, den 01.05.
Die Party ist am Montag, den ersten Mai
Die Party ist am Montag, den 01. Mai
2.The 15th / fifteenth Wedding anniversary.Der 15. Hochzeitstag / Der fünfzehnte Hochzeitstag.
3. His third birthday.Sein dritter Geburtstag.
4. Today is the 21st of May.Heute ist der 21. Mai.
5. The 12th person.Die 12. Person.

Date of the Century on the other hand is used to mark years and Millennials. In German, this date is used in two ways with respect to the year 2000. That is to say, the years before the 21st Century are written in a different way from the 21st century.

The years from the 1st to 20th Century are written in words in tens of hundred while the years from the 21st century are written in units of thousand. They are both written without space in between. For example;

  • B.C —— vor Christus
  • A.D —— nach Christus
  • 1500 —— Fünfzehnhundert.
  • 1501 —— Fünfzehnhunderteins.
  • 1871 —— Achtzehnhunderteinundsiebzig.
  • 1945 —— Neunzehnhundertfünfundvierzig.
  • 1999 —— Neunzehnhundertneunundneunzig.
  • 2000 —— Zweitausend.
  • 2006 —— Zweitausend(und)sechs.
  • 2011 —— Zweitausend(und)elf.
  • 2020 —— Zweitausend(und)zwanzig.
  • 2022 —— Zweitausendzweiundzwanzig.

**Note that the dates of the century are all nouns and must never be punctuated like the dates of the month. Also, they never use the preposition “in” like English.
