Understanding Voters' Preference for Candidates in the Philippine Presidential Elections
2023, Cognizance Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies (CJMS)
Background: Philippine presidential elections have traditionally been characterized by the dominance of political popularity, populism, and financial interests, often marred by incidents of violence and electoral fraud. In this context, higher education is recognized as a pivotal tool for mitigating voter naivety and fostering informed political engagement. This study seeks to assess the preferences of voters, specifically 108 students from BiPSU (the research population), and to identify the significant sources of information that influence their decision-making about the election. Methods: The research methodology employed descriptive statistics, including frequency distribution and cross-tabulations, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the voters' preferences and their sources of information. The study was conducted on a sample of 108 students from BiPSU, allowing for a focused examination of their perspectives. The researchers used descriptive statistics to analyze the data to provide a meaningful and understandable visualization of the sources of information of respondents and their preferred candidates for the Philippine presidential election. Results: The findings of this study revealed that among the students of BiPSU, the most influential sources of information related to the election are social media and family. Additionally, the study identified specific candidate attributes that resonate with this demographic: a male lawyer with prior experience in elected office, aligning with liberal ideologies, prioritizing education, and possessing a doctoral degree emerged as the most preferred qualities for candidates in the future Philippine Presidential Election. Conclusion: This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by shedding light on the demographic variances in voter preferences. It supports and substantiates previous claims and research on Philippine politics, influential sources of information, and preferences regarding election candidates. The research also suggests potential enhancements for future studies, such as more refined time settings and a more evident diversification of demographic profiles, which could yield further insights into the dynamics of Philippine Presidential elections.

Despite the limits of elections as a mechanism to secure accountability and ensure substantive representation, the 2016 elections drew the highest turnout across elections held since the political transition in 1986, a clear indication of electoralism. The high turnout may be a result of a relatively tightly contested race, with each of the main contenders appealing to constituencies that they symbolically represent. Nonetheless, the 2016 Presidential elections remained personality-oriented, media driven and political clan dominated. The eventual winner, Rodrigo Roa Duterte, garnered the presidency given a combination of factors: the clarity of his campaign message – focused on curbing a single problem (criminality, in general, and the illegal drug trade, in particular) that he elevated as the most serious concern that the next president should address; significant support from a geographic area (Mindanao) and associated ethno-linguistic groups (i.e., Bisaya); and, serious questions...

This paper attempts to trace, using survey evidence, the electoral behaviour of Baguio City voters during two years beginning with the 1986 Presidential election contest between Ferdinand Marcos and Corazon Aquino. The revolutionary aftermath to this election issued in a new political regime, which held a series of elections. By January 1988 there had been a plebiscite to ratify a new Constitution, Congressional and Senatorial elections, and finally local elections for the Mayor and City Council. For all of these elections, local surveys were conducted in the City of Baguio.
This investigative report discusses how Timpuyog, a political group in the Philippine Cordillera specifically in the City of Baguio, is perceived by its constituents and how this perception affects the political landscape of the city.

While the May 2022 Philippines national and local elections will be the first to be held under a global pandemic, its outcome will likely be shaped by social media. The 2016 presidential contest was already widely considered as the first mainstream “social media election” in the Philippines.
Elections are essential to a democracy. Analyses of elections are typically directed toward understanding electoral outcomes rather than the electoral process. The electoral process shapes the dynamics and outcomes of elections.
How do voters behave before the election? And what Policy Recommendation on Electoral Reforms can be proposed based on the findings of the study? This study made use of purposive sampling.
