3. Teaching Nursing Informatics for Educators

Nursing Informatics has been officially named a specialization in nursing by the American Nurses Association (ANA) since 1992 (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018, p. 107) and has been integrated in most important educational standards and initiatives, including that of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials of Baccalaureate, Master and Doctoral Education (AACN 2008, 2011, 2006), Quality and Safety Education of Nurses (QSEN, 2005), and the seminal report, To Err is Human (Institute of Medicine, 1999), regarding the importance of the use of technology to minimize medical errors & fatalities.

All over the world, the importance of educating nurses & other healthcare professionals on the requisite concepts, theories and applications of nursing informatics is palpable & imminent. Technology is moving in leaps and bounds, transforming every facet of how we do things in health care & in other industries. It is even more evident during this pandemic as we move to distance education, telehealth, and other data analytics apps & programs.  As we require our nursing students to take nursing informatics in their undergraduate programs, there is a dearth of faculty who are adept or confident to teach the course. This certificate program in nursing informatics is specifically structured and geared to help Master’s prepared nurses gain the knowledge & confidence to teach this course appropriately in the undergraduate programs. The certificate program is to be offered for eight weeks over half of a regular semester. Three synchronous online classes will be held.  All the other coursework will be done asynchronously, with a project that is innovative and informatics-related as a final course requirement.

  • Define nursing informatics and explain data, information, knowledge and wisdom as the meta structures of nursing informatics
  • Discuss the various disciplines that influenced nursing informatics and its evolution into a specialization
  • Discuss some relevant theories and concepts used in nursing informatics
  • Describe some ethical, moral and legal considerations in nursing informatics
  • Explain what decision support systems are and provide some examples
  • Identify some applications of nursing informatics in nursing education, research, practice and administration

For more information, you may email us at [email protected]

4. Principles of Good Clinical Practice and Health Research Ethics

With the increasing number of health researches and clinical trials being conducted in the Philippines and Asia, there is a need to address issues related to health research ethics and good clinical practice. The stakeholders – investigators, sponsors and members of ethics review committees/ institutional review boards – need to develop the capacity to cope with the demand for trained human resources and continuing systems improvement. With support from multi-sectoral partnerships and international networking, capacity strengthening in health research ethics must be anchored on a clear national governance framework leading towards a good ethical review system. The training workshops serve as a platform that brings together stakeholders to discuss practical solutions for emerging challenges in health research through lectures and case studies. Through transdisciplinary expertise, the training workshops help promote an environment of cooperation to sustain improvements in the quality of health research.

  • To apply principles of good clinical practice and research ethics in the evaluation and approval of health research protocols
  • To demonstrate an operational understanding of various types of health research and  their related ethical issues
  • To address ethical issues in protocol development
