How to Teach P Sound: Articulation Activities, and Word Lists for Effective Speech Therapy

How to teach m sound: articulation activities, and word lists for effective speech therapy, how to teach b sound: articulation activities, and word lists for effective speech therapy.

The “b” sound is a voiced bilabial plosive, which means that it is produced by briefly stopping the airflow from the lungs using both lips (bilabial) and then releasing it in a sudden burst (plosive). The vocal cords vibrate during the production of this sound, which creates a buzzing or humming sensation in the throat.

To produce the “b” sound, you need to bring your lips together and then release them while simultaneously pushing air out of your lungs. This creates a sudden burst of sound that is characterized by a brief, low-pitched hum or vibration. You can try producing this sound by saying the word “ball” or “baby” and paying attention to the way your lips and vocal cords work together to create the sound. In phonetics, this sound is represented by the symbol /b/.

Here are few tips you can follow to teach the “B” sound:

Demonstrate the sound: Start by demonstrating the “B” sound for your child. Make the sound and have your child watch your lips and mouth movements. You can also have them feel the vibrations on your throat as you make the sound.

words with b for speech therapy

Visual Cue: Begin by showing the child how to produce the “b” sound with a visual cue. Demonstrate how to make the sound by placing your lips together, and then releasing them with a puff of air. You can also use a mirror to help the child see how their lips are moving.

Understand the sound: Help your child understand how the “B” sound is made by explaining that it is a voiced bilabial plosive. This means it is made by completely closing the lips and then releasing air with a small burst while using their voice.

Practice Blowing: Help your child get used to the sensation of stopping and releasing air with their lips by having them practice blowing air out of their mouth without making any sound.

Practice Tongue Placement: Show your child how to place their tongue behind their teeth and keep their lips closed while making the “B” sound. You can make it more fun by having them imitate animal sounds, such as a buzzing bee or a big, brave bear, while using the “B” sound.

Practice in Isolation: Once your child has mastered the correct tongue and lip position, have them practice making the “B” sound on its own without any other sounds.

Add Syllables: After your child has mastered the “B” sound in isolation, have them practice using it in different syllables, such as “ba,” “be,” and “bo.” You can make it more fun by having them say silly words like “bubble,” “banana,” and “butterfly.”

Practice in Words: Once your child has mastered the “B” sound in syllables, have them practice using it in different words such as “ball,” “bat,” and “boat.”

Practice in Phrases: After your child has mastered the “B” sound in words, have them practice using it in phrases like “big blue ball,” “busy bee,” and “beautiful butterfly.”

Practice in Sentences: Finally, have your child practice using the “B” sound in different sentences such as “Billy bought a big blue ball,” “I love to eat bananas,” and “My boat is big and blue.”

Practice Everywhere: Encourage your child to practice using the “B” sound in different contexts, such as during playtime, mealtime, or while reading books. You can also make it more fun by having them use the “B” sound in different accents or dialects.

Each list of articulation sounds contains words with the target sound in the beginning, middle, and end position, including blends when applicable, as well as words that...

  • are common and functional (words we use all day...everyday)
  • are mostly 1 syllable (multi-syllabic words are more difficult)
  • have a phonemic context that don't interfere with production of the target sound (most words)

If "R" is the problem sound using the word "Rope" makes saying the "R" sound harder because the "O" sound is considered a round vowel.

A round vowel is one where you round your lips to say it. Go ahead...try it by saying "O" as in "boat". You rounded your lips didn't you? I thought you might.

Children who have difficulty with the "R" sound tend to say the "W" sound...they say "Wabbit" instead of "Rabbit".

The "W" sound is considered a rounded sound too. Try saying the "W" sound without rounding your lips...you can't because that is how the sound is made.

So by pairing the "R" sound with the "O" sound like in the word "Rope", this makes the word extra difficult for a child who has a problem saying the "R" sound because the "O" that follows the "R" will naturally make them want to round there lips.

words with b for speech therapy

How to Pick Vocabulary Words: What words?! Whenever I had a student who needed to work on vocabulary My mind started racing, ‘What words do I pick?’ ‘What are the right words to use? ‘. When writing a goal we need to know what we are tracking. You cannot simply write with ‘classroom vocabulary’, that ain’t gonna fly if your case brought to due process.

You must have a list of the words you are going to target and track progress.

Now, there are lots of resources out there. I have read books like Bridge to Vocabulary , Bringing Words to Life , Building Academic Vocabulary , and Teaching Vocabulary and found them so valuable. These have been wonderful resources and I highly encourage you to check them out. A common theme across them all is to make the vocabulary meaningful for the child.

Explain why these words are so important,

point them out in daily living, show their actual application! Choosing the words to target when it comes to working on vocabulary doesn’t have to be an ordeal either. One of the best and most practical places to find words is to look at their academic worksheets, read the directions, and focus on the verbs. Words like arranging, summarize, incorporate, detail, etc will pop up left and right.

These are examples of tier 2, functional vocabulary words. I do not assume that the students know these words despite having been surrounded for years. So, if you’re stumped on what words to choose, start here.

“Failure to understand instructional verbs and thus what a teacher or textbook is asking of a child has the potential of creating a rift in the child’s engagement with the learning process.” Lowman et al., 2018

Now, one of the most common questions after hearing this, ‘What verbs are the best to target then?’. So here is a list of instructional verbs, common for Kindergarten to 5th grade. Please keep in mind there are soooo many words available that our students are exposed to everyday, but if you need a jumping off point, then take a look at the list below.

How to Pick Vocabulary Words

I have also used these Vocabulary Kits with a lot of success too. I simply pick a word set and that is our focus for the year. The are research based so the vocabulary chosen aligns with the same academic practicality we need. This also includes scaffolded materials as well as a pretest/post-test. You can read more about this my Teaching Vocabulary in Speech Therapy post.

So when it comes to vocabulary, don’t stress. Words your kids need surround them all you have to do is to find the best fit for them.

B Sound Articulation Therapy: A Guide for Parents

Stacie bennett.

Speech-Language Pathologist , Trenton , New Jersey

Feb 12, 2022 B sound is one of the first sounds that babies learn. Here you will find some advice on how to teach your child the b sound, and when is the right time to seek a speech therapist's help!

The /b/ sound is a bilabial sound, which means the lips are pressed together while producing the sound. It is also a voiced sound, which means that the vocal cords are vibrating when the breath is released from the lips. This is different than the unvoiced /p/ sound, for example, which gets its sound simply from the release of air.

This is one of the first sounds that children begin to make. It may start out with babbling, such as “ba-ba-ba” and then progress to “ball” by age 2. Since this is such a foundational sound for your child’s emerging speech skills, it is important to know if your child is on track.

If your little one still struggles with the /b/ sound by age 4 , it is imperative to seek the help of a licensed speech-language pathologist to help correct the delay and prevent future language struggles.

When will your child learn certain sounds?

To produce the /b/ sound, use the following cues with your child.

  • Watch my mouth (this will help him see what your lips are doing).
  • Put your lips together .
  • Make your lips pop .
  • Make your voice hum / Turn your voice on.

Help your child push his lips together with his fingers if he’s having trouble getting them closed.

When teaching sounds, it’s important to start at the syllable level before expecting children to produce entire words or sentences with the correct sound. You have to walk before you can run, right? Try to see if the child can imitate your model of the speech sound, if not, they will need some extra help to get going and figure out correct placement and sound production.

Tactile or Touch Cues for Articulation Therapy

Tactile or touch cues can be used to teach bilabial speech sounds, but giving the child some physical feedback/input around their mouth. While the exact touch cue might vary depending on which resource you use, some generally agreed upon bilabial cues include placing one or more fingers against the same closed lips but do not move it away quickly when you make the sound. The “b” sound does not have the same air escape as the “p.” Remind the child to put “lips together.” You could also just place your finger and tap.

Books on Articulation Therapy

Books are a great way to model and practice speech sounds in context. There are a variety of books that highlight the /b/, /p/ and /m/ sounds. While reading, make sure to pause and model the target sound (a little bit of overemphasis here goes a long way) for the child.

If the rhyme of the book if familiar or there is a repeated line, pause, model the correct placement and encourage the child to attempt the key word with their good /b/, /p/ or /m/ sound (e.g., the ___ (mmmmommy) on the bus goes shh shh shh). This also works for sing-alongs where the child can easily predict and anticipate the upcoming sound.

One of my favorite books to read with my kids is, Baa Moo, I love you. This book shows different animals and the sounds that they make. It’s repetitive, short and easy for young minds to absorb.

The second book I’d recommend is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. This is great for any letters of the alphabet so you can use it over and over again. It goes over the letters and gives words that rhyme for each one. This provides many opportunities for kids to practice the sounds.

When talking to your child’s pediatrician, if you have concerns about your child’s speech and language development, make sure you voice those feelings and thoughts. You know your child the best and can provide valuable insight towards his/her development. They will give you recommendations for a speech-language pathologist who will provide a full-evaluation to determine if speech therapy is needed.

Nancy Pelosi Calls Trump 'Domestic Enemy' In New Jan. 6 Footage

Ryan Grenoble

National Reporter, HuffPost

words with b for speech therapy

New footage of the Jan. 6, 2021 , attack on the U.S. Capitol and its aftermath follows then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) as she’s evacuated from the building and grappling with how to respond.

The video was recorded by Pelosi’s daughter, Alexandra Pelosi, who filmed the footage while producing a documentary for HBO.

HBO turned the footage over to Congress this week in response to a Republican-led House investigation. The GOP committee is attempting to rebut the findings of an earlier ― and bipartisan ― committee that overwhelmingly found Trump responsible for that day’s failed coup.

The clips, obtained by CNN , show Pelosi fully understood the gravity of the moment as they evacuated, telling her staffers and security detail to “consider the worst.”

The speaker asked for regular updates about what was happening on the House floor, showing extreme frustration that the mob succeeded in delaying certification of the vote.

“If they stopped the proceedings, they will have succeeded in stopping the validation of the president of the United States,” she acknowledged at one point.

“If they stopped the proceedings, we will have totally failed,” she said. “And we’ve got to take some responsibility for not holding the security accountable for what could have happened. We have got to finish the proceedings.”

Congress certified the vote hours later, after the insurrectionists were cleared from the building. Asked by Alexandra how it felt “to be done with Donald Trump ” after the vote was finally certified early in the morning of Jan. 7, Pelosi was in no celebratory mood.

“I just feel sick what he did to the Capitol and to the country today,” Pelosi says, staring at her phone as her SUV trundles through the pre-dawn darkness. “He’s got to pay a price for that.”

Another clip, filmed later that day, shows the speaker dialing in her rhetoric while she meets with staff in the office destroyed by Trump’s mob the day before. A shattered mirror appears on the wall behind them.

“We’ve taken an oath to protect our country from all enemies foreign and domestic,” she says. “There’s a domestic enemy in the White House. And let’s not mince words about this.”

Republicans have long attempted to blame Pelosi for the day’s violence, falsely claiming her office was responsible for the security failures. The Capitol Police Board, not the House speaker, is in charge of U.S. Capitol security. And Pelosi wouldn’t have had the authority to summon the National Guard to the District of Columbia. Trump, however, did have that authority.

The video does show Pelosi owning some of the day’s failures.

“Why weren’t the National Guard there to begin with?” she wonders aloud in one clip as she’s being evacuated. “I take responsibility for not having them just prepare for more. It’s stupid that we should be in a situation like this.”

U.S. Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund and House Sergeant at Arms Paul Irving both resigned after the riot.
