This is a time of the year to mend old broken bridges and forgive past mistakes of the passing year. It offers a new chance of gratitude and forgiveness. 7 tips  for a memorable New Year speech.

7 tips  for your New Year speech.

New Year is one of those pivotal moments. This is an ideal opportunity to stop, leave a bad things behind, reinforce beliefs, (re)unite people, and reenergize for the future. No matter if you are CEO of a large corporation, coach of your son’s football team, or granddad to an abounding offspring, if you are a leader, you are expected to say something. So, you’d better seize this golden opportunity and say something memorable.

Everyone has their own style and every talking opportunity is different. There are no fixed rules, but here are a few tips for your New Year speech. I’d appreciate if you let me know how it went.

7 tips for your New Year speech

  • Prepare to be short
  • Tell them what they know
  • Focus on why
  • Make it personal
  • Sprinkle with emotion
  • Be memorable
  • Do it with style

1. Prepare to be short

You need at least 3 minutes to get a message across, and boredom will strike if you talk longer than 10. Accept that people will only remember 2-3 things of what you say, and even less if you talk longer.

Being short requires preparation and hard work. So, prepare well. Think about the one thing you would like to achieve with your New Year speech. What do you want them to remember? What is your key message? Structure your talk, find some anecdotes, a metaphor, quote or joke. Possibly write out your speech but make sure to use your own honest words; not some kind of formal, wooden language.

“If I am to speak ten minutes, I need a week for preparation; if fifteen minutes, three days; if half an hour, two days; if an hour, I am ready now.”― Woodrow Wilson, 28th president of the United States from 1913-1921

2. Say what they already know

Unless you are getting married or if you’re 6 weeks pregnant, the end-of-year season is not the moment to announce something totally new. People are in festive mode, and potentially under the influence of a drink or two. Therfore, avoid announcing new things that require their full attention or a substantial effort.

A New Year speech is a moment to reinforce things. Reinforce the values, the team spirit, the positive vibes,… And don’t be afraid to repeat yourself. We all like to hear familiar things that we agree with. Children all love to hear the fairy-tales they already know. And grown-ups are only tall children, especially after a drink or two.

You can simply start by enumerating what happened last year, how that impacted us, and how that made you feel… You will see and hear the Yeaahhh’s in the room. It will get them in a positive and agreeable mood.

3. Focus on the why

People don’t believe in you because of what you do, but because of why you do it. It is not the product that unites the employees of a company, but their love for innovative technology, their creative pride, or their dedication to the customer. It is not Uncle Phillip’s new Ferrari that will make his nephews adore him, but his love for Italian design and technology, his craving for speed, or his success as a business man. In fact, the Ferrari is merely a metaphor, or a shiny but superficial expression of a far deeper drive.

So, focus on why you do what you do. Why do you get up in the morning? Why are you in business? Why do you feel like one big family? Why are you different compared to others? It is all about purpose, belief, vision, feeling, drive, values or fundamental happiness. That is what your New Year speech should be about.

4. Make it personal

Your story is about you and the others. So talk about others, but don’t omit to talk about yourself.

Most things in life only become meaningful when in relationship to others: business, sport, family, success and even money. Without others they are meaningless. So, talk about your colleagues, your customers, your suppliers, your children, your parents, your opponents,… And thank them. The worthiest people always give credit to the others. Especially talk about your audience and how much you appreciate them. Put individuals in your audience in the leading role of your anecdotes.

But people will only believe you when they feel the words come from your authentic self, right from your heart. So don’t avoid speaking about yourself either. Tell them how you feel about what you’ve achieved, why you are proud… There is nothing as arrogant as fake humility.

To-the-point presentations, impactful, time-saving, clear, and concise, 5. sprinkle with emotion.

Emotion moves people. It makes them think. It makes them decide. It makes them change, and most importantly it makes them remember. It is the emotion you evoke that will make your words stick in their minds.

Evoking emotion can be done in many different ways. It is partly in what you say, and partly in how you say it, in letting them feel your own emotion. How you do this is highly dependent on the culture and the occasion.  You can openly express your emotions or just vaguely suggest them. Here are a few things to consider.

Don’t avoid the negative. There can’t be ups without downs. There can’t be positive without negative emotions. Expressing negative emotions rids us of their negative effects. So don’t avoid the things that went bad last year. Name them and honestly tell your audience how it made you feel. At the same time show that you can put things in perspective and see the positive things in the most negative experiences.

Be positive overall. Your audience wants to be left with a positive feeling. They want to see that you are positively, happily, confidently looking towards the future. Give them that. Make sure that the positive moments in your talk outweigh the negative ones.

Have fun. Since beginning of mankind, jesters and clowns helped us forget misery. People who laugh more, live longer. We laugh when we are happy, and laughing also makes us happy. Even if you’re not a born joker, use a funny anecdote, or a funny metaphor. Just make sure it is appropriate for the occasion and for your relationship to the audience. If you feel unsure about it, test it with someone beforehand. At least try to laugh and make them laugh. It will make your talk memorable:

New Year Speech for Students in English 200 Words

The commencement of a new year symbolizes an opportunity for individuals to leave behind adverse experiences and embrace a fresh start. It’s a time when hopes soar for happiness, health, and prosperity for oneself and loved ones. Across the globe, diverse customs and traditions mark the advent of the New Year. Families unite to decorate New Year trees, bedecked with an array of ornaments and radiant lights, creating a joyous atmosphere within homes.

Celebrations unfold uniquely in various cultures on New Year’s Day, from cherished family gatherings to prepping for vacations. It’s a period marked by gift-giving, home adornment, and acquiring new attire. In India, while the New Year’s dates vary across religious beliefs, many also embrace January 1st due to Western influences. Vibrant events like Kavi Sammelan and Bhajan Sandhya dot the country, accompanied by prayers, house embellishments with saffron flags, and temple rituals.

The historical roots of New Year’s Day trace back to the ancient Roman calendar. Initially starting with 10 months, the calendar’s evolution led to the Julian calendar, resembling the modern Gregorian one. Caesar, seeking counsel from leading scholars, designated January 1st as the New Year, a homage to Janus, the Roman deity of beginnings. Romans celebrated with gift exchanges, sacrifices to Janus, and lively festivities.

New Year’s Day universally signifies the onset of a fresh calendar cycle. Celebrated on January 1st in the Gregorian calendar, it echoes the beginnings marked in both the Julian and Roman calendars. Across cultures, it’s a momentous occasion observed diversely but universally heralded as a time for new beginnings.

We celebrate by coming together with loved ones, sharing laughter, and counting down to the possibilities that lie ahead.

New Year’s signifies a chance to reflect on where we’ve been and where we wish to go. It’s a time for introspection, contemplating the things we’ve learned, the changes we hope to make, and the adventures awaiting us. We jot down resolutions—promises to ourselves—to improve, grow, and seize opportunities in the upcoming year. The spirit of celebration is infectious, spreading joy and optimism as fireworks light up the sky, music fills the air, and toasts are raised to new beginnings.

Beyond the revelry, New Year’s serves as a reminder of the precious gift of time. Speech on New Year Resolution 2024 For Students

As humans, we’re a mix of virtues and flaws bundled together. It’s crucial to shed unwanted habits and nurture new, positive ones as an integral part of our lives. Embracing New Year’s resolutions stands as a means to rejuvenate ourselves annually.

What defines an ideal New Year’s resolution ? It’s an idea that molds and mirrors a better version of oneself. As students, refining our thoughts, fostering positive habits, and evolving our personalities each year is paramount.

The widely embraced belief is that the new year presents an opportunity for many to bid farewell to old habits and usher in positive, constructive changes in their daily lives. Individuals from diverse backgrounds set targets and make resolutions aiming to lead fulfilled, content, serene, and thriving lives.

Resolutions usually focus on stopping things that waste time and don’t help. We swap those useless activities for new ones that make a real difference. It’s tough to avoid bad habits that harm our lives.

As a student, time holds immense value to me. Wasting time today can cost me dearly tomorrow. Here are my New Year’s resolutions:

  • Prioritize mental and physical well-being through regular exercise and mindfulness practices.
  • Dedicate time each day to learn something new, whether it’s a skill, a language, or a hobby.
  • Cultivate a healthier diet by incorporating more fruits, vegetables, and balanced meals.
  • Practice gratitude and positivity, aiming to find the good in every situation.
  • Foster stronger connections with friends and family by spending quality time together.
  • Dedicate time for self-reflection and personal growth, aiming for continuous improvement.
  • Manage time more efficiently, setting realistic goals and sticking to a productive schedule.
  • Contribute positively to the community through volunteering or acts of kindness.
  • Reduce screen time and embrace more moments of unplugged relaxation and leisure.
  • Set clear financial goals and work towards achieving greater financial stability and responsibility.

To achieve these resolutions and goals, I’ll implement various changes in my daily routine. Excessive use of social media, particularly platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Twitter, is a primary cause of procrastination. Hence, I’ll limit my time spent on these platforms.

Rather than indulging excessively in television, I’ll explore a sport or work on my hobby I enjoy and engage in it to stay happy, physically fit and sharp. I’ll prioritize respect toward my parents, teachers, and elders, as it’s an integral part of ones life.

Good manners shape our personality. These adjustments will contribute to enhancing my character. My New Year’s resolutions won’t just help in shedding bad habits and adopting good ones, but they’ll also pave the way for a brighter future and success at every walk of life.

New Year’s day is followed by different other customs and traditions in every household across the globe. Each culture celebrates this day in its own unique way. Some people start planning for a mini-vacation beforehand while some plan to spend quality time with their loved ones. The preparation begins with buying gifts, decorating houses, and purchasing new clothes.

India's New Year's Eve Celebration

Everyone in India celebrates New Year on different days depending on their religion. Nonetheless, due to the influence of Western civilization, most people now celebrate New Year's Day on January 1 st as well.

The advent of the New Year in India is marked by vibrant and diverse celebrations that resonate with cultural richness. It is a time when people extend heartfelt congratulations to their friends and family, sharing the joy of a fresh beginning. Hindus, in particular, embark on a tradition of thorough house cleaning, adorning their homes with saffron flags that symbolize auspiciousness.

The religious fervor escalates as bhajans echo in temples, creating a serene atmosphere. Special prayers are offered, fostering a spiritual ambiance across various religious sites. The New Year becomes a canvas for cultural expression, with events like Kavi Sammelan, Bhajan Sandhya, and Kalash Yatra captivating audiences in different locations. These festivities underscore the unity in diversity as India welcomes the promise of a new year with enthusiasm and reverence.

January 1 as New Year’s Day

The early Roman Calendar has 10 months and 304 days, and each new year begins on the spring equinox; according to tradition, it was created by Romulus, the founder of Rome, in the eighth century B.C. Numa Pompilius, the second king of Rome, later added the months of Januarius and Februarius to the Roman Calendar in 1713 B.C.

Over the centuries, the calendar has been out of sync with the Sun. The emperor Caesar then decided to solve the mystery in 46 B.C. by consulting with the most prominent astronomers and mathematicians of the time. Caesar introduced the Julian calendar, which was very similar to the modern Gregorian calendar, which is still used by the majority of countries around the world.

Caesar established January 1 as the first day of the year, partly to honour Janus, the Roman god of beginnings (whose two faces allowed him to seem back to the past and forward into the longer term which was a part of his reforms). To commemorate the New Year, the Romans exchanged gifts and offered sacrifices to God Janus. They also went to loud parties and adorned their homes with laurel branches.

Traditions for the New Year

Many countries celebrate New Year from the evening of December 31 (also known as New Year's Eve) until the early hours of January 1 st , often with several meals and snacks to bring good fortune in the coming year. Grapes are known as a symbol of hope for the coming months and are thus used by people in Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries.

Legumes, such as lentils in Italy and black-eyed peas in the southern United States, have been a traditional New Year's dish in many countries and places because they are thought to resemble coins and future financial success. Pork is also a popular New Year's dish in some countries, including Austria, Hungary, Cuba, and Portugal, and it is believed that pigs represent progress and prosperity.

Rice pudding with an almond hidden inside it is served on New Year's Eve in many countries, including Sweden and Norway. It is said that whoever finds the almond will be blessed with 12 months of good fortune. In contrast, ring-shaped cakes and pastries are served during the New Year in the Netherlands, Greece, Mexico, and other countries. It denotes that the year has completed a full circle.

The Importance of the New Year

New Year's Eve is like a big, happy party that everyone in the world joins! It's a special time when we say goodbye to the old year and welcome the brand-new one with excitement. The New Year is like a magical reset button; it encourages us to start fresh, try new things, and bring more happiness into our lives.

In the New Year, we look back at the things we did in the past year and learn from them. If we make any mistakes, it's okay because the New Year gives us a chance to do better. We make promises to ourselves, called resolutions, to be kind, work hard, or learn something new. It's like setting goals for ourselves.

The New Year is a bit like a festival, but instead of lights and decorations, it's full of positive vibes and energy. This energy helps us tackle challenges and reach our goals. So, New Year's Eve is not just a date on the calendar; it's a special time that fills us with enthusiasm and makes our lives even more exciting!

New Year’s Short Essay

On New Year's Day, everyone puts on new clothes and congratulates one another. On the occasion of the New Year, many different types of programmes are held in schools. The event of the New Year retains various fireworks, dance competitions, singing competitions, and so on. At New Year's, the market is ablaze with colour, with colourful lights, and other decorative items adorning every surface. On the occasion of the New Year, some countries have a state holiday, so people go on picnics. The New Year brings with it new hopes; we should always be happy in any situation, good or bad.

On this day, everyone reflects on the significant events of the previous year and evaluates the circumstances under which the entire year was spent. And, to make amends for the shortcomings of the previous year, take a new oath on the auspicious occasion of the New Year and get involved in doing that work for the coming year with full hard work and dedication. The Western Civilization's New Year was celebrated in Babylon 4000 years ago, but it was held on March 21 st at the time. However, since the introduction of the Julian calendar, New Year's Day has been celebrated on January 1 st every year. Every year has 365 days, at the end of which the New Year is celebrated with great zeal. Because of the influence of Western civilization throughout the world, everyone now celebrates January 1 as New Year's Day.

a speech on new year

Writing A New Year’s Speech: Your Checklist (VIDEO)

Are you planning a New Year’s speech, but are you experiencing a writer’s block?

Know that’s completely normal. Writing a memorable New Year’s speech is tough. Because it’s a milestone speech, it can seem like an overwhelming task.

Still, it is the perfect occasion to look back and look forward together, and thank the members of your team.

1. Define your speeching intention

There are unavoidable elements to a New Year’s speech, which we’ll look into below.

But to start off, ask yourself: What do I want people to take away, say one week after the speech?

Think not only in terms of what you want people to know, but also what you want them to feel and do .

For example:

  • What will they know ? That even if this felt like our best year ever, they can prepare for an even better one
  • What will they feel ? Proud, excited and curious
  • What will they do ? They will act motivated and keep the objectives clearly in mind.

This way, you get one clear message that gives your speech direction.

 2. First, look back

New Year’s is the time to review the past year. There are different angles you can mix and match:

  • Spot trends:  As a leader, people look to you to paint the bigger picture. What are remarkable developments in the world? Your industry? Your organisation?
  • Tell stories:  Every year has its good stories. Which can you use in your speech, that illustrate your main point? Or maybe they are just plain funny.
  • Give credit:  In true holiday spirit, call out those that have accomplished valuable things. You will win hearts and confirm your image of a leader who is well aware of the value of their team. Try to include people on every level — not just your management team.

3. Then, look forward

New Year’s is also the time to formulate resolutions. Leaders have a vision. What are the big goals you are setting for your organisation or team?

These can be numeric (growth in sales, staff or offices, for example), but it might be appropriate to formulate ‘softer’ goals such as what you as an organisation will make happen in the world.

People love to have a direction to work towards, and this is your occasion to provide it as a leader. This is your ‘I have a dream’ moment!

4. Keep it light

Every speech has a context.

In the case of a New Year’s speech, that context is: your people have the holidays just behind them. They’ve had their fair deal of family dinners and receptions. They’ve probably eaten and possibly drank more than was good for them.

The message here is: a New Year’s speech that is too serious or too long is a bit like a cold shower at this point. Better to inject some warm feelings and a sense of humour.

5. End clearly and on a high note

As always, the end of your speech determines the final impression you make.

Ever had a splendid meal at a restaurant, but the dessert was disappointing? Then you know what I mean. So don’t waste that chance.

In the case of a New Year’s speech, it’s good practice to bring out a toast.

You could prepare your audience by using a ‘bridge phrase’ toward the then of your speech, such as:

“So, as I close this toast and we bring in a new year…”

And then you bring out your toast. Here are a few of our favourite ones:

  • “For last year’s words belong to last year’s language, and next year’s words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning.” — T.S. Eliot
  • “Here’s to a bright New Year and a fond farewell to the old; here’s to the things that are yet to come, and to the memories that we hold.”
  • “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” — Dan Millman
  • “Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365-page book. Write a good one.” — Brad Paisley
  • “May all your troubles during the coming year be as short as your New Year’s resolutions.”  (a funny one – ideal for keeping it light 😉 )

You can of course find another quote about change or gratitude that you like, or write your own.

Good luck writing your New Year’s Speech! Which tip will you implement? Do you have additional tips? Let me know in a comment.

Anchoring Script for the New Year Celebration in English

History of the new year.

New Year is the first day of the year on the Gregorian calendar and Julian calendar . It is celebrated on January 1 yearly. The earliest recorded celebration of the new year is recorded back some 4,000 years to ancient Babylon. For Babylonians , the first full moon following the vernal equinox , the day in late March with full sunlight and darkness, was the start of the new year. Later on, January became the first day of the new year at some point after 153 BC. When the second King of Rome Numa Pontilius added the two months of January and February. As a result, the new year was moved from March to January. However, it took little time and effort for January to become the first day of the year. In essence, New Year is the most celebrated public holiday. This day is celebrated with fireworks, making a resolution or calling friends and family. Here, the article below covers the Anchoring Script for the New Year Celebration in English.

Good evening and a warm welcome to you all, ladies and gentlemen.

Therefore, New Year brings us all a new opportunity to benefit from. So, don’t dishearten yourselves, stand up, and march ahead.

With that being said, once again, I would like to welcome you all to our today’s tremendous evening held to welcome the new year of 2018 .

Welcoming the guests

We feel honored to have personalities such as, (names of the guests). You hardly need any introduction, sir/madam; you have made us all proud of your distinguished works.

May 2018 bring you joy, peace, and propriety.

Moving forward, we have planned a lot of activities such as music and dance, games, and a new year’s special dish. Furthermore, at 11:59 we will start the countdown on the big screen right in front of us to welcome the new year.

Calling musicians on the stage

As you all know, new year’s eve is all about celebration, so chill and put your hands together for our band.

After the music

I hope you all are having fun. And, may you crown the year with your goodness, and your paths drip the abundance.

Concluding the function

We are a few minutes away from the moment for which we all have gathered here, tonight. So, please, let’s gather near the screen.

Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of the old; make a way in the wilderness, river in the desert, and become lovers of truth. To you be glory and honor, in this year, and forever. (At 11:59) Ladies and gentlemen, count with me, 10, 9, 8, …  HAPPY NEW YEAR!

How people celebrate the New Year

People all around the world celebrate the New Year in different ways. Followings are some of the common ways to celebrate the New Year.

Fireworks Displays

One of the most popular ways to celebrate the New Year is with big fireworks displays. These take place all over the world, as different countries hit midnight.

Smashing Plates

If you came out of your front door and find a load of smashed plates, you might be a bit puzzled. But that is exactly what people in Denmark hope to find out of their front door, as it means good luck in Denmark.

Eating lentils

In Brazil, there is a tradition to eat lentils at New Year, as these represent money – meaning good fortune for the year ahead!

Dropping things

In New York, huge crowds of people head to Times Square to count down to midnight. But the thing that everyone is looking forward to is the ball drop, which is when a glowing ball is lowered down, to signal the start of the new year.

However, other cities in the United States, have their own tradition of dropping things down such as watermelon.

Visiting Friends and Family

In Scotland, people go “first-footing”, which is where they aim to be the first person to step foot in their friends or family’s homes after midnight.

Fortune telling with metal

In countries including Finland, people melt a special metal and drop it in cold water. The metal will make a shape in the water when it cools. Then, they try to read the shape of the metal to tell them something about their future.

Eating grapes

When the clock has struck midnight in Spain, people reach for grapes. This is because there is a tradition to eat one grape each time the clock strikes midnight.

In Romania, there’s a tradition for people to dress up as dancing bears to chase away any evil spirits. This is because bears are special according to old Romanian stories and are able to protect and heal people.

24 Inspirational New Year's Toasts to the Future, Friends, and Family

While New Year's Eve parties are bound to look a bit different in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic ( the CDC recommends keeping indoor celebrations to just your household—which means big bar bashes and large gatherings are likely off the table), there are still a few time-honored traditions you can count on, namely a late night filled with copious food and plenty of bubbly , a countdown to midnight, and some sort of toast to new beginnings and a more auspicious 2021 .

If that last bit has you shaking in your booties (and not from that whipping winter weather), chances are you're the one who has to give said toast. And trust us, we get it: Few things—excluding swimming with sharks, skydiving, and watching The Shining —cause us more fear than what to say while raising a glass and toasting the New Year. So to take your stress level down a few notches, we asked a speech writer to share their best tips for giving a good New Year's toast, whether you're going for a sentimental blessing, a funny ode to friendship and family, something inspirational , a nod to the group's success and accomplishments, or a classic quote about gratitude , just pour yourself some champagne, and we'll take care of the rest.

It all boils down to five simple steps...

1. Know your audience.

Like writing a meaningful wedding speech , "be sure to talk directly to those in the room, using familiar phrases and even stories that almost everyone can identify with," says Zakiya Larry , a media coach and former speech writer. "This draws your audience in and holds attention."

2. Use what's trending, not what's trite.

"Sprinkle in some trending terms or even slang words to get smiles and deepen connection," says Larry. "Don't you want people talking about how 'lit' your toast was, instead of hearing, for the millionth time, to get ready for a 'new year, new you'?"

3. Don't give advice.

People don't respond well to being told what they should do, plus it can come across as preachy or self-promoting, says Larry. "Instead, try to include a point to ponder in the new year, or a call to action," she says. "This gives the power to decide and act back to your audience."

4. Include crowd participation.

Make your toast unique by including the audience, says Larry. "Consider leading them in shouting a fun one- to three-word affirmation ." Try something like, "on the count of three, yell 'Best Year Yet!'"

5. End clearly and on a high note.

"We've all experienced a good toast that started to drag on, then fizzled out at the end," says Larry. "Like a gymnast or pilot, it's how you land it that makes all the difference." If it helps, Larry suggests writing down a verbal cue like "So, as I close this toast and we bring in a new year..." Then, simply pop in your closing sentence.

Ready to get started?

You can do this—and whether you lift them word-for-word or use them as thought starters, these sample toasts can help.

"May love and laughter light your days, and warm your heart and home. May good and faithful friends be yours, wherever you may roam." — Irish Proverb

"May the best day of your past be the worst day of your future." — Irish Blessing

"May luck be your friend in whatever you do and may trouble be always a stranger to you." — Irish Blessing

"May good and faithful friends be yours, wherever you may roam." — Irish Blessing

Inspirational toasts

"Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man." — Benjamin Franklin, 1755 edition of Poor Richard’s Almanac

"This year, take Betty White's advice : 'Accentuate the positive, not the negative. It sounds so trite, but a lot of people will pick out something to complain about, rather than say, ‘Hey, that was great!’ It’s not hard to find great stuff if you look.'"

"As Willie Nelson said , 'When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around.' This year, I challenge you start each day by writing down one thing you're grateful for. "

"We're so hard on ourselves. Think about common New Year's resolutions: to eat less, to do more. But what if we resolved to just be kinder to ourselves. Wouldn't the world be a better place? Wouldn't we be happier? As Meghan Markle said in a 2015 interview : 'If we treated ourselves the way we treated our best friend, can you imagine how much better off we would be?'"

" Oprah said : 'Focusing on one thing that you are grateful for increases the energy of gratitude and rises the joy inside yourself.' Here's to a more joyful year for all."

"All those things that you're worried about are not important. You're going to be OK. Better than OK. You're going to be great. Spend less time tearing yourself apart, worrying if you're good enough. You are good enough. And you're going to meet amazing people in your life who will help you and love you." — Reese Witherspoon

"One of the first steps to happiness is deciding that you want to be happy and knowing what that means. I have had many full-on conversations about what that looks like for me. To be happy is a choice you make every day, every hour. And refining and renewing that state is a constant pursuit." — Julia Roberts

"The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” — Dan Millman, Way Of The Peaceful Warrior: A Book That Changes Lives

"New year—a new chapter, new verse, or just the same old story? Ultimately we write it. The choice is ours." - Alex Morritt, Impromptu Scribe

"Past and Present I know well; each is a friend and sometimes an enemy to me. But it is the quiet, beckoning Future, an absolute stranger, with whom I have fallen madly in love." — Richelle E. Goodrich, Slaying Dragons

"As Eckhart Tolle once said , "Acknowledging the good that is already in your life is the foundation for all abundance." This year, my wish for us all is that we'll have the strength to see the glass as half full, not half empty."

"Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365-page book. Write a good one." — Brad Paisley

"There are far better things ahead than any we leave behind." — C.S. Lewis, The Collected Letters of C.S. Lewis, Volume 3

"The new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written." — Melody Beatty, The Language of Letting Go

"Let's promise ourselves one mantra I learned from Oprah this year: "Good riddance to decisions that don’t support self-worth.'"

Toasts to friends

"Tonight, I am grateful to ring in the New Year with you, my best friends. As Lois Wyse said , "A good friend is a connection to life—a tie to the past, a road to the future, the key to sanity in a totally insane world." “Remember that life’s most valuable antiques are dear old friends.” — H. Jackson Brown, Jr., Life’s Instructions for Wisdom, Success, and Happiness " Oprah said : 'Family should be the place where you can be your most complete self.' Tonight, I want to toast to friends I am lucky to call family ."

Funny toasts

As Oscar Wilde wrote , 'After a good dinner one can forgive anybody, even one's own relations.' So let's feast and have a hefty dose of bubbly. Sounds like it's the easiest way to start the new year with a nice, clean slate—and, I don't know about you, but I'm good with that!"

"Here's a thought from Elizabeth Gilbert : This year, 'Embrace the glorious mess that you are.'"

Long Speech on New Year’s Eve

Happy New Year’s Eve, everyone!

As we stand on the cusp of a new year, it is natural to look back on the past year and reflect on all that has happened. For many of us, the past year has been filled with joys and accomplishments, as well as challenges and setbacks.

But no matter what the past year has brought, it is important to remember that every day is an opportunity for growth and change. As we welcome the new year, let us embrace the promise of a fresh start and the chance to make a positive impact on the world around us.

One of the most common ways that people celebrate New Year’s Eve is by making resolutions. These are often personal goals that we set for ourselves in order to improve our lives or make a positive impact on the world. Some common New Year’s resolutions include getting in shape, saving money, learning a new skill, or volunteering our time and resources to help others.

But while it is important to set goals and strive for self-improvement, it is also important to be realistic and to remember that change takes time. Rather than setting unrealistic goals that we may not be able to achieve, let us focus on making small, achievable changes that can add up to big improvements over time.

In addition to making resolutions, many people also celebrate New Year’s Eve by attending parties or gatherings with friends and family. These celebrations can be a great way to bring people together and create memories that will last a lifetime.

As we ring in the new year, let us also remember to be grateful for all that we have. No matter what challenges we may face, there is always something to be thankful for. So let us take a moment to appreciate the people and experiences that have enriched our lives and look forward to all the new year has in store.

Here’s to a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year for us all! May we all find the strength, courage, and determination to pursue our goals and make the most of every day. Happy New Year!

Ladies & gentlemen, New Year, is another chance for us to get it right, and we are just a few hours away from that fresh chance. Things don’t always go the way we want but don’t get disheartened, stand up and march ahead.

Hello, family and friends. It is a New Year eve once again, let us take this eve as an opportunity to thank and appreciate each other. We ignore this in our daily life; we get targets, deadlines, and assignments to achieve. In all this, we forget to look around and appreciate those who keep us running.

Shops on this day are loaded with the swarm. 1 st January is a celebration of New Year in India and is fun-packed with ceremonies, skip and sustenance. People praise it with songs and dance. Children are joyful on this day as they get great nourishment and endowments to appreciate.

This year, let us make resolutions to acknowledge them who stand behind us no matter what who loves us unconditionally. On this Eve of New Year celebration, I would like to thank my family, loved ones, especially my wife, who not only take care of home and kids, preferably has a successful career too.

Remember, a New Year signifies a new opportunity to start over. Forget the failures, backlashes and aim towards excellence. Lets always be with our near and dear ones on the journey towards success. I am fortunate to find myself among such a beautiful family, friends, and colleagues. Let us grow together. I hope this year will bring success and happiness in all our lives.

They will leave the event with a big smile on the face. You can also share previous year performance and New Year plans with us. Try not to have negative discussions; there is a whole year to take care of that. So, keep it fun and light.

Speech on Happy New Year Celebration for Students and Children

These days, every school and college celebrate New Year. So, being the Principal, I want to share my last year’s achieves and plans for the next year. Allow me to wish you a happy New Year first.

Being the principal of the ‘XYZ’ College; as we start a new year and a new semester, I would like to extend my warm welcome to our students and faculty members. They have contributed to making ‘XYZ’, the vibrant center of intellectual, cultural and sporting activity that it is all year round.

We are actively pursuing opportunities to develop new programs and also expand existing programs. We have also been channelling our energy into the development and establishing a world-class school.

It is our belief and mission to develop a student’s dedication, self-discipline , integrity, and responsibility. This is our major goal, but hard to achieve as we are faced with selfishness and materialism all around us.

We hope to render a massive number of bursaries to our needy students this year and initiatives. It has played a pivotal role in supporting our fundraising efforts. It is just one of several creative ways in which the campus continues to work towards meeting the needs of our students.

  • "Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every new year find you a better man." — Benjamin Franklin
  • "We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day." — Edith Pierce
  • "For last year’s words belong to last year’s language, and next year's words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning." — T.S. Eliot

  • "Here’s health to those I love and wealth to those who love me."
  • "May all your troubles during the coming year be as short as your New Year’s resolutions."
  • "Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow ye diet."

  • "Here’s to those who’ve seen us at our best and seen us at our worst and can’t tell the difference."

Drinking Toasts for New Year’s Eve

Some believe that your toast for New Year’s Eve is only as strong as your drink. If your countdown comes in the form of cocktails and champagne, look over these quotes and sayings before giving your champagne toast:

  • "In victory, you deserve Champagne, in defeat, you need it." — Napoleon Bonaparte
  • "Stir the eggnog, lift the toddy, Happy New Year, everybody." — Phyllis McGinley
  • "There comes a time in every woman’s life when the only thing that helps is a glass of Champagne." — Bette Davis
  • "Always do sober what you said you’d do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut." — Ernest Hemingway
  • "Take everything in moderation, including moderation." — Oscar Wilde
  • "Too much of anything is bad, but too much Champagne is just right." — F. Scott Fitzgerald

The Best New Year’s Toast

If none of the above tempts you, consider perennials such as "To you!" and "All the best." A classic quote can tie any New Year’s toast together. For emergencies, memorize this bonus quote from Wallace Irwin:

  • "I used to know a clever toast, but pshaw! I cannot think of it—so fill your glass to anything and, bless your souls, I’ll drink to it!"

A New Year’s Eve speech is a speech given on the last day of the year, typically at a party or other gathering to celebrate the transition from the current year to the new year. The purpose of the speech is usually to reflect on the past year and to look forward to the coming year, expressing hope and optimism for the future.

Here are some tips for giving a New Year’s Eve speech:

  • Keep it short and sweet: A New Year’s Eve speech is typically not a long, formal affair. Keep your speech to a few minutes so that you don’t lose the attention of your audience.
  • Reflect on the past year: Take a few moments to reflect on the events and experiences of the past year. This could include both the highs and lows, as well as any lessons learned.
  • Set the tone: A New Year’s Eve speech is an opportunity to set the tone for the coming year. Consider what you want to achieve in the coming year and how you hope to make a positive impact.
  • Be positive and hopeful: A New Year’s Eve speech should be upbeat and positive, focusing on the potential for growth and change in the coming year. Avoid dwelling on negative events or problems from the past year.
  • End with a call to action: Finish your speech with a call to action, encouraging your audience to embrace the coming year and make the most of it. This could be as simple as urging them to set goals for themselves or to take on new challenges.

Overall, a New Year’s Eve speech should be a time to celebrate the past year and look forward to the future with hope and optimism.

Here is a sample short happy New Year’s Eve speech:

“Good evening everyone, and happy New Year’s Eve! As we gather here tonight to say goodbye to the old year and welcome in the new, I wanted to take a few moments to reflect on the past year and look forward to what the coming year has in store.

It’s been a tough year, with many challenges and setbacks. But through it all, we’ve come together as a community and supported each other in ways that have truly been inspiring. I’m grateful to be here with all of you tonight, and I’m excited to see what the new year has in store for us.

So let’s raise a glass to the past year, and to all the lessons we’ve learned. And let’s look forward to the coming year with hope and optimism, embracing new challenges and opportunities with open hearts and minds.

Here’s to a happy and healthy new year for us all! Cheers!”

Here is a sample Long happy New Year’s Eve speech:

Happy New Year, everyone!

As we stand on the cusp of a new year, it’s a time to reflect on the past year and all that we’ve accomplished. It’s also a time to look forward to all the possibilities and opportunities that the new year will bring.

As we bid farewell to the old and welcome in the new, let’s take a moment to think about all the things we’re grateful for. Whether it’s the love and support of our family and friends, the accomplishments we’ve made in our personal and professional lives, or the simple joys of everyday life, there is always something to be thankful for.

But let’s also remember that the new year is a time for renewal and for setting new goals. It’s a time to reassess our priorities and to make the changes necessary to achieve our dreams and aspirations. Whether it’s learning a new skill, traveling to a new place, or simply taking better care of ourselves, there are endless possibilities for growth and self-improvement.

As we embark on this new journey together, let’s remember to be kind and compassionate towards ourselves and others. Let’s strive to be more understanding, more open-minded, and more inclusive. Let’s work to create a world that is more just, more equitable, and more loving.

And as we celebrate the new year, let’s do so with joy, with hope, and with a sense of possibility. Let’s embrace the unknown and embrace the challenges that lie ahead. Let’s make the most of every moment and make this new year one to remember.

Here’s to a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year for all of us! May all your dreams and goals come true, and may this be a year filled with joy, love, and endless possibilities.

Cheers to a new year and a new beginning!

New York Fed chief says it's time to lower rates with inflation cooling and the labor market slowing

  • Federal Reserve Bank of New York President John Williams said the economy is "now in equipoise."
  • He pointed to easing inflation and historically low unemployment, despite an uptick in recent months.
  • Williams spoke after the highly-anticipated August jobs report came in line with expectations.

Insider Today

In remarks following the August jobs report release, Federal Reserve Bank of New York President John Williams said economic conditions call for interest rate cuts.

Williams pointed to easing inflation, adding in a moderated discussion that the US is seeing a historically low unemployment rate.

"With the economy now in equipoise and inflation on a path to two percent, it is now appropriate to dial down the degree of restrictiveness in the stance of policy by reducing the target range for the federal funds rate," Williams said in a speech on Friday.

Williams spoke after the highly anticipated August jobs report, which showed the unemployment rate ticked down even as fewer jobs than expected were added in August. US employers added 142,000 jobs for the month, bringing the unemployment rate down to 4.2% from 4.3%.

Williams said those numbers are "consistent with what we've been seeing — a slowing economy and a cooling off in the labor market."

While unemployment has risen in recent months, particularly with a surprise uptick in July, Williams said the current rate is still historically low. He forecasts the rate will end the year at about 4.25% before falling to a longer-term rate of about 3.75%.

All eyes have been on the labor market following Fed Chair Jerome Powell's remarks at the central bank's Jackson Hole conference, in which he said the Fed does not welcome any further slowing of the job market.

The sentiment reflects a shift in the Fed's focus on inflation and toward the labor market, which is the other side of the Fed's dual mandate.

"The risks to our two goals are now in better balance, and policy needs to adjust to reflect that balance," Williams said.

Williams did not indicate how deep rate cuts will ultimately be, but said the time has come, echoing Powell's Jackson Hole speech.

"The stance of monetary policy can be moved to a more neutral setting over time depending on the evolution of the data, the outlook, and the risks to achieving our objectives," he said.

This year, I’ve been speaking with everyday Americans to hear their ideas about the purpose of public schools and how to improve them. One aspiration cuts across all perspectives: Everyone wants their children to feel a sense of belonging in school. Parents can’t understand why this isn’t more of a priority in education policy, and they are right. Research and experience establish that belonging is essential for addressing the most vexing educational challenges, including lagging academic achievement, chronic absenteeism and student mental health.

Truly preparing young people to thrive as adults and stewards of American democracy means focusing on fostering belonging in schools.

When students experience belonging in school, the benefits are both immediate and long-lasting . In the short term, it improves attendance, grades and graduation rates. Long-term benefits are observable even 20 years later, including lower rates of drug abuse, mental health problems and involvement in violence, either as victims or perpetrators.

As compelling as these findings are, data reveal a crisis of student belonging. Recent data from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that only 55% of young people feel connected to people at their school, with LGBTQ+ students, those with disabilities and students of color faring the worst. This disconnection is fueling a mental health crisis. In 2022, 20% of all American high school students seriously considered suicide ; 21% of female students made a suicide plan and 13% actually attempted it. This magnitude of alienation and despair shocks the conscience and ought to provoke a robust response. Banning cellphones and adding therapists in schools may be necessary, but definitely are not sufficient; America needs a proactive agenda to make schools healthier places for learning and connection.

Chronic absenteeism further illustrates this crisis. Over 30% or more of students were chronically absent in more than half of U.S. high schools in 2021-22. This instability makes building a sense of community nearly impossible.

Despite the clear link between belonging and positive outcomes, it has been largely overlooked in education reform efforts of the past 40 years, barely registering in school quality metrics. Belonging is often dismissed as being soft, despite its crucial role in student success. Research shows that having at least one caring adult , access to clubs and sports and culturally inclusive curricula are key to creating a sense of belonging. However, these are opportunities often unequally distributed or even restricted in some states. Welcoming parents in schools also boosts student belonging, yet fewer than 50% of Colorado parents report feeling a sense of belonging in their child’s school — the lowest of any surveyed setting.

Education leaders often tell me they value belonging but wonder whether it’s possible to measure it accurately. Doing this is actually very straightforward: Ask people. Students and teachers can reliably assess school life quality, and school climate surveys strongly predict student outcomes . Policymakers should use these to create a baseline understanding of where schools stand and then implement research-backed strategies that build belonging:

Start with physical safety. The latest CDC data reveal that teens feel less safe in school and report more bullying than a couple of years ago, and teachers increasingly are raising alarms about disciplinary problems that aren’t being addressed. Restorative practices , such as the ones implemented in Chicago Public Schools, can reduce suspensions and improve climate.

Then, situate schooling in the context of community. Structuring lessons about the places students are from validates that their communities are worthy of study and helps forge connections between kids’ lives inside and outside of school. Curricula like BMore Me in Baltimore ground students in their city’s history, fostering a sense of belonging; partners like Community Share help identify assets and potential mentors in the surrounding area. A full-time community schools coordinator can integrate local leaders and partners into the educational experience, creating coherence between students’ lives inside and outside of school.

Making schoolwork meaningful is also critically important. Strategies for building students’ belonging won’t work if they don’t run directly through academic learning experiences. In a recent focus group I conducted, a student lamented that her middle school mostly prepares her to succeed at more school when she wants to be getting ready for work and life. Students want to be challenged and for their classwork to model real work that is valued out in the world. Project-based learning, like EL Education’s expeditions are a great resource — and are open source!

Lastly, ask the real experts. Students and families know what it takes to establish belonging; School administrators and teachers should solicit their opinions regularly and act on their insights. Annual school climate surveys provide important data, but shorter surveys can be administered more frequently to give teachers real-time feedback that can inform ongoing improvement. Such tools are most effective when paired with direct engagement, using resources like Aspen’s Coming Back to Climate toolkit for student focus groups and empathy interviews.

Policymakers can fund these strategies and do more, like making school meals free and eliminating activity fees . Policymakers can ensure schools are attractive, inviting and healthy , are equipped with air conditioning and proper ventilation and don’t expose children to toxins . As a former education civil rights lawyer, I saw how squalid school buildings signal to students that they don’t belong.

Optimizing schools for belonging benefits broader society by creating civic connection and commitment, which is crucial to America’s diverse democracy. In the workplace, as artificial intelligence and automation displace rote tasks, skills like teamwork, collaboration and collective problem-solving will be highly valued. Cultivating belonging in schools not only enriches individual lives, but drives economic development and social cohesion.Public schools are one of America’s proudest innovations, embodying the idea of E Pluribus, Unum . Every one of America’s cataclysmic ruptures – the Civil War, the Great Depression, the Civil Rights Movement – has centered on core questions of who belongs, and all have been resolved to expand belonging. Seventy years after Brown vs. Board of Education , this generation is called to renew the promise of public education, and of America, by recommitting to the original, as-yet unmet creed of universal belonging.

Rachael ray avoids slurred speech concerns with new post, declares ‘paella party’.

a speech on new year

Rachael Ray returned to social media but failed to address her fans’ worry after sparking concern by appearing to slur her speech in a recent video.

The professional TV chef, 56, dropped an Instagram post on Wednesday, marking her first since causing frenzy over her health earlier this week.

Ray did not appear on camera, but her hand and yummy homemade paella did.

Rachael Ray's cooking video that sparked worry.

Showing off the colorful dish filled with shrimp and sausage, playfully captioned the post , “Break out the cast iron 🥘 it’s time to put a little pep in Wednesday night’s dinner step with a shrimp 🍤 and chorizo paella party 🎉.”

Seeming to be in good spirits despite the concern from fans, Ray chose to ignore pleas for answers about the state of her health.

The best-selling cookbook author raised eyebrows when she shared a clip from her series “Rachael Ray in Tuscany” via  Instagram  on Monday.

While telling a story about almost killing late icon Tony Bennett at a dinner party, Ray seemed to stammer over her words.

She recalled inviting the “New York State of Mind” singer — who passed away on July 21, 2023 , at 96. after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease — and polishing her floors to impress him. Her grand gesture turned out to be a mistake.

“When I pulled out the chair for Tony to sit down for his starter snacks and aperitivo, the chair slid out from under him and he hit his head on my marble counter behind him, and he fell to the floor,” Ray shared.

“I thought I killed Tony Bennett,” the TV star said. “I thought I killed him, literally. And his wife, Susan – so glorious – he says to me, ‘Rachael, he’s fine. He’ll pop back up. Just let him be.'”

She revealed he did just that and had double portions of her dinner.

Fans couldn’t concentrate on Ray’s story with the happy outcome because they were distracted by her “slurred” speech .

“Is she slurring or am I slurring[?]” one follower asked. “Wait! What’s going on with Rachael Ray?” a second concerned fan wrote.

“I love you but are you ok? I’m seriously concerned,” another commented on her video. “You guys, her mouth is always slanted like that but she is deeeefinitely slurring. I think she had a little too much wine. She is acting like my stepmom when she would drink a bottle,” someone else commented.

Rachael Ray attends Sonya Sklaroff's "A Love Letter To New York City."

Ray has not addressed their concerns or shared any news about her health in nearly a decade. In 2018, rumors started swirling that she was getting surgery for throat cancer.

Her representative later cleared the air , telling fans, “Rachael is the picture of health. She is having very minor surgery to remove a benign cyst on her vocal cord. It’s a common in-and-out procedure that she will have in early December and it will not adversely affect any of her daytime show or Food Network tapings.”

Ray ended her syndicated daytime show  after 17 seasons in 2023.

The Post has reached out to her rep for comment.

Trump Calls for an Efficiency Commission, an Idea Pushed by Elon Musk

Donald Trump, in a speech in New York, said the commission would conduct a sweeping audit of the federal government and recommend “drastic reforms” for cutting waste.

Donald Trump speaking into a microphone, his hand on the edge of a podium.

By Michael Gold and Alan Rappeport

  • Sept. 5, 2024

Former President Donald J. Trump called for the creation of a government efficiency commission in an economic speech in New York on Thursday, adopting a policy idea that was pitched to him by the billionaire businessman Elon Musk.

Mr. Trump said that Mr. Musk would also lead the commission, which would conduct a sweeping audit of the federal government and recommend “drastic reforms” for cutting waste. He said the commission would save “trillions of dollars.”

In a wide-ranging and sometimes meandering speech that lasted more than an hour, Mr. Trump recast his first-term record as an economic miracle and renewed his pitch for lowering taxes and raising tariffs on imports, often disregarding some of the potential implications of his new proposals.

The trade wars that Mr. Trump started had painful consequences for American farmers, and the new tariffs that he called for would also likely trigger backlash and retaliation from other countries. Mr. Trump claimed that his new tax cuts would be paid for by spurring economic growth, but the 2017 tax cuts he enacted increased the national debt and his growth projections never panned out.

Mr. Trump’s embrace of the concept of a government efficiency commission — a favorite Washington solution for delaying dealing with hard problems — comes as he is trying to define how his stewardship of the economy would differ from that of his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris. He has assailed her economic vision as one that would saddle the economy with wasteful spending and burdensome regulations.

During his speech, Mr. Trump also vowed to eliminate 10 existing government regulations for every new regulation added under his potential new administration. Mr. Trump — who during his presidency issued an executive order vowing a similar two-for-one rule — argued that the cost of regulations was being passed onto consumers.
