Sydney water threatened with lawsuit over cancer-linked chemicals in drinking water, by carrie fellner, save articles for later.

Add articles to your saved list and come back to them any time.

A former NSW Australian of the Year has accused authorities of an “appalling” failure to protect citizens from cancer-linked forever chemicals in drinking water and has threatened to lead a class action against the government unless Australian standards are overhauled.

The threat follows the shock closure that a Blue Mountains dam which forms part of the drinking water catchment showed elevated levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFAS).

The delay in shutting down a contaminated dam has outraged former Australian of the Year Jon Dee.

Authorities belatedly tested drinking water supplies following pressure from a Herald investigation in June .

The discovery has outraged Jon Dee, a former Australian of the Year for NSW and founder of Planet Ark, who lives in the Blue Mountains.

“What shocks everybody locally is that if The Sydney Morning Herald had not really, really pushed this, we would still be none the wiser, drinking water with PFAS four times higher than what is allowed in America and 300 times higher than what is in Warragamba Dam,” Dee said.

“That’s totally unacceptable.”

When asked why it was not carrying out routine monitoring of the drinking water supply in June, a Sydney Water spokesperson said there were “no known PFAS hotspots in our drinking water catchments”.

NSW authorities’ handling of the issue has angered people such as Dee, who feel they have been unnecessarily exposed to elevated levels of the chemicals.

“The failure to properly monitor these forever chemicals in our water supply has put the health of the Blue Mountains population at risk. It has put our tourist visitors at risk,” Dee said.

“This failure in the duty of care towards the public is appalling.”

WaterNSW revealed on Wednesday that Medlow Dam has been taken offline after it was found to contain elevated levels of the PFAS, exceeding both Australian and more stringent US safety standards.

Raw water from the dam is fed into other dams and diluted before it reaches the Cascade Water Filtration Plant, which supplies tap water to more than 49,000 Blue Mountains residents and millions of tourists who visit the region’s world-famous peaks.

Testing in June showed levels of forever chemicals in the tap water fell within Australia’s drinking water guidelines.

However, they were about quadruple what the US will permit its citizens to be exposed to, after it concluded there was no safe level of the “probable carcinogens”.

‘What we don’t want to end up with is a potential cancer cluster in the Blue Mountains for people like me and my family and my friends.’ Jon Dee

Dee called on the Australian government to immediately adopt the US safety thresholds, which experts say are based on the most comprehensive scientific evaluation of forever chemicals ever undertaken by a global health authority.

The US considered more than 130 studies that didn’t exist when Australia finalised its guidelines in 2018.

America is ground-zero of the global forever chemicals crisis as the home of chemical giant 3M, which is accused of masterminding a decades-long campaign to hide the dangers of its stain-repellent and water-proofing products from the world.

A review of Australia’s guidelines is expected to be completed next year.

Dee was incensed by what he perceived as attempts by the NSW government to play down the matter.

“I think essentially the authorities are gaslighting the public by trying to make them think there’s nothing to worry about,” Dee said.

“We should take the precautionary principle and ensure the water quality is meeting the US standard because that’s the world’s best standard.”

Dee called on Premier Chris Minns to take personal charge of the matter.

“If the Minns government cannot guarantee this, then my view is that a class action should be launched against Sydney Water or WaterNSW.

“What we don’t want to end up with is a potential cancer cluster in the Blue Mountains for people like me and my family and my friends.”

Minister grilled

NSW Environment Minister Penny Sharpe was grilled in parliament on Thursday by Greens MLC Cate Faehrmann about the discrepancies between US and Australian standards.

Sharpe pointed out it was a matter for the federal government and was currently being dealt with by a National Health and Medical Research Council review.

“So I am aware of it, and I am concerned, of course, but we’re taking steps in relation to that, and it’s just going to take a little bit of time,” she said.

Asked on Thursday how concerned he was about the discovery of the chemicals in Medlow Dam, NSW Health Minister Ryan Park said he was confident that agencies would do stringent work to monitor the situation.

Park added he believed Sydney’s drinking water was “the best drinking water on the globe”.

In June, Sydney’s drinking water supply was also found to contain trace levels of PFAS, but readings were within Australia’s safety thresholds.

As a Teenager in Europe, I Went to Nudist Beaches All the Time. 30 Years Later, Would the Experience Be the Same?

Image may contain Princess Antonia of Luxembourg Sandro Botticelli Art Painting Adult Person and Wedding

In July 2017, I wrote an article about toplessness for Vogue Italia. The director, actor, and political activist Lina Esco had emerged from the world of show business to question public nudity laws in the United States with 2014’s Free the Nipple . Her film took on a life of its own and, thanks to the endorsement from the likes of Miley Cyrus, Cara Delevingne, and Willow Smith, eventually developed into a whole political movement, particularly on social media where the hashtag #FreeTheNipple spread at lightning speed. The same year as that piece, actor Alyssa Milano tweeted “me too” and encouraged others who had been sexually assaulted to do the same, building on the movement activist Tarana Burke had created more than a decade earlier. The rest is history.

In that Vogue article, I chatted with designer Alessandro Michele about a shared memory of our favorite topless beaches of our youth. Anywhere in Italy where water appeared—be it the hard-partying Riviera Romagnola, the traditionally chic Amalfi coast and Sorrento peninsula, the vertiginous cliffs and inlets of Italy’s continuation of the French Côte d’Azur or the towering volcanic rocks of Sicily’s mythological Riviera dei Ciclopi—one was bound to find bodies of all shapes and forms, naturally topless.

In the ’90s, growing up in Italy, naked breasts were everywhere and nobody thought anything about it. “When we look at our childhood photos we recognize those imperfect breasts and those bodies, each with their own story. I think of the ‘un-beauty’ of that time and feel it is actually the ultimate beauty,” Michele told me.

Indeed, I felt the same way. My relationship with toplessness was part of a very democratic cultural status quo. If every woman on the beaches of the Mediterranean—from the sexy girls tanning on the shoreline to the grandmothers eating spaghetti al pomodoro out of Tupperware containers under sun umbrellas—bore equally naked body parts, then somehow we were all on the same team. No hierarchies were established. In general, there was very little naked breast censorship. Free nipples appeared on magazine covers at newsstands, whether tabloids or art and fashion magazines. Breasts were so naturally part of the national conversation and aesthetic that Ilona Staller (also known as Cicciolina) and Moana Pozzi, two porn stars, cofounded a political party called the Love Party. I have a clear memory of my neighbor hanging their party’s banner out his window, featuring a topless Cicciolina winking.

A lot has changed since those days, but also since that initial 2017 piece. There’s been a feminist revolution, a transformation of women’s fashion and gender politics, the absurd overturning of Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction in New York, the intensely disturbing overturning of Roe v Wade and the current political battle over reproductive rights radiating from America and far beyond. One way or another, the female body is very much the site of political battles as much as it is of style and fashion tastes. And maybe for this reason naked breasts seem to populate runways and street style a lot more than they do beaches—it’s likely that being naked at a dinner party leaves more of a permanent mark than being naked on a glamorous shore. Naked “dressing” seems to be much more popular than naked “being.” It’s no coincidence that this year Saint Laurent, Chloé, Ferragamo, Tom Ford, Gucci, Ludovic de Saint Sernin, and Valentino all paid homage to sheer dressing in their collections, with lacy dresses, see-through tops, sheer silk hosiery fabric, and close-fitting silk dresses. The majority of Anthony Vaccarello’s fall 2024 collection was mostly transparent. And even off the runway, guests at the Saint Laurent show matched the mood. Olivia Wilde appeared in a stunning see-through dark bodysuit, Georgia May Jagger wore a sheer black halter top, Ebony Riley wore a breathtaking V-neck, and Elsa Hosk went for translucent polka dots.

In some strange way, it feels as if the trends of the ’90s have swapped seats with those of today. When, in 1993, a 19-year-old Kate Moss wore her (now iconic) transparent, bronze-hued Liza Bruce lamé slip dress to Elite Model Agency’s Look of the Year Awards in London, I remember seeing her picture everywhere and feeling in awe of her daring and grace. I loved her simple sexy style, with her otherworldly smile, the hair tied back in a bun. That very slip has remained in the collective unconscious for decades, populating thousands of internet pages, but in remembering that night Moss admitted that the nude look was totally unintentional: “I had no idea why everyone was so excited—in the darkness of Corinne [Day’s] Soho flat, the dress was not see-through!” That’s to say that nude dressing was usually mostly casual and not intellectualized in the context of a larger movement.

10 Years In, Amal Clooney Still Channels Bridal Fashion for Date Night

But today nudity feels loaded in different ways. In April, actor and author Julia Fox appeared in Los Angeles in a flesh-colored bra that featured hairy hyper-realist prints of breasts and nipples, and matching panties with a print of a sewn-up vagina and the words “closed” on it, as a form of feminist performance art. Breasts , an exhibition curated by Carolina Pasti, recently opened as part of the 60th Venice Biennale at Palazzo Franchetti and showcases works that span from painting and sculpture to photography and film, reflecting on themes of motherhood, empowerment, sexuality, body image, and illness. The show features work by Cindy Sherman, Robert Mapplethorpe, Louise Bourgeois, and an incredible painting by Bernardino Del Signoraccio of Madonna dell’Umiltà, circa 1460-1540. “It was fundamental for me to include a Madonna Lactans from a historical perspective. In this intimate representation, the Virgin reveals one breast while nurturing the child, the organic gesture emphasizing the profound bond between mother and child,” Pasti said when we spoke.

Through her portrayal of breasts, she delves into the delicate balance of strength and vulnerability within the female form. I spoke to Pasti about my recent musings on naked breasts, which she shared in a deep way. I asked her whether she too noticed a disparity between nudity on beaches as opposed to the one on streets and runways, and she agreed. Her main concern today is around censorship. To Pasti, social media is still far too rigid around breast exposure and she plans to discuss this issue through a podcast that she will be launching in September, together with other topics such as motherhood, breastfeeding, sexuality, and breast cancer awareness.

With summer at the door, it was my turn to see just how much of the new reread on transparency would apply to beach life. In the last few years, I noticed those beaches Michele and I reminisced about have grown more conservative and, despite being the daughter of unrepentant nudists and having a long track record of militant topless bathing, I myself have felt a bit more shy lately. Perhaps a woman in her 40s with two children is simply less prone to taking her top off, but my memories of youth are populated by visions of bare-chested mothers surveilling the coasts and shouting after their kids in the water. So when did we stop? And why? When did Michele’s era of “un-beauty” end?

In order to get back in touch with my own naked breasts I decided to revisit the nudist beaches of my youth to see what had changed. On a warm day in May, I researched some local topless beaches around Rome and asked a friend to come with me. Two moms, plus our four children, two girls and two boys of the same ages. “Let’s make an experiment of this and see what happens,” I proposed.

The kids all yawned, but my friend was up for it. These days to go topless, especially on urban beaches, you must visit properties that have an unspoken nudist tradition. One of these in Rome is the natural reserve beach at Capocotta, south of Ostia, but I felt a bit unsure revisiting those sands. In my memory, the Roman nudist beaches often equated to encounters with promiscuous strangers behind the dunes. I didn’t want to expose the kids, so, being that I am now a wise adult, I went ahead and picked a compromise. I found a nude-friendly beach on the banks of the Farfa River, in the rolling Sabina hills.

We piled into my friend’s car and drove out. The kids were all whining about the experiment. “We don’t want to see naked mums!” they complained. “Can’t you just lie and say you went to a nudist beach?”

We parked the car and walked across the medieval fairy-tale woods until we reached the path that ran along the river. All around us were huge trees and gigantic leaves. It had rained a lot recently and the vegetation had grown incredibly. We walked past the remains of a Roman road. The colors all around were bright green, the sky almost fluorescent blue. The kids got sidetracked by the presence of frogs. According to the indications, the beach was about a mile up the river. Halfway down the path, we bumped into a couple of young guys in fanny packs. I scanned them for signs of quintessential nudist attitude, but realized I actually had no idea what that was. I asked if we were headed in the right direction to go to “the beach”. They nodded and gave us a sly smile, which I immediately interpreted as a judgment about us as mothers, and more generally about our age, but I was ready to vindicate bare breasts against ageism.

We reached a small pebbled beach, secluded and bordered by a huge trunk that separated it from the path. A group of girls was there, sharing headphones and listening to music. To my dismay they were all wearing the tops and bottoms of their bikinis. One of them was in a full-piece bathing suit and shorts. “See, they are all wearing bathing suits. Please don’t be the weird mums who don’t.”

At this point, it was a matter of principle. My friend and I decided to take our bathing suits off completely, if only for a moment, and jumped into the river. The boys stayed on the beach with full clothes and shoes on, horrified. The girls went in behind us with their bathing suits. “Are you happy now? my son asked. “Did you prove your point?”

I didn’t really know what my point actually was. I think a part of me wanted to feel entitled to those long-gone decades of naturalism. Whether this was an instinct, or as Pasti said, “an act that was simply tied to the individual freedom of each woman”, it was hard to tell. At this point in history, the two things didn’t seem to cancel each other out—in fact, the opposite. Taking off a bathing suit, at least for my generation who never had to fight for it, had unexpectedly turned into a radical move and maybe I wanted to be part of the new discourse. Also, the chances of me going out in a fully sheer top were slim these days, but on the beach it was different. I would always fight for an authentic topless experience.

After our picnic on the river, we left determined to make our way—and without children—to the beaches of Capocotta. In truth, no part of me actually felt very subversive doing something I had been doing my whole life, but it still felt good. Once a free breast, always a free breast.

Essay on Water | Water Essay for Students and Children in English

Essay on Water in English: Water, the very reason for the existence of living beings on earth, constitutes of more than 70% of the planet. Water is that magical liquid, that provides life to animals, plants, trees, bacteria and viruses. Water is the very reason why earth can support life and other planets cannot.

Up to 60% of the human body is made up of water. While there is an abundance of water on the planet, not everything can be consumed by human beings and animals. It is unfortunate that only 3% of the water on earth is freshwater, which is portable and safe to consume.

Hence, when such a valuable resource is scarce and non-renewable, it becomes of utmost Importance of Water judiciously.

Long and Short Essay on Water in English for Students and Children

In the article, we have provided a 600-word essay on water for kids, students, and schoolchildren for their usage in assignments, tests, and project work. We have also provided a 200-word essay on water for kids to use in exams and tests and learn everything about the water.

Long Essay on Water in English

Water, the pivotal ingredient in the essence of life, is the most important non-renewable resource, other than oxygen, for life to exist and thrive on our planet. Water which makes up almost one-third of the face of the planet has only 2.75% to 3.1% of fresh after that can actually be used by human beings, animals and plants.

This small percentage of fresh water is used by all living beings for their growth and survival. Plants and trees use it to for photosynthesis to grow. Animals and human beings use water to drink and bathe every day. Hence, judicious use of after should be followed since water is non-renewable and depleting at an ever-increasing rate. At this rate, water will become redundant for future generations, which is to say that life will become non-existent on earth. Experts say that those unimaginable days are not very far from us if we don’t use water with responsibility.

Water that is present in oceans and seas, that is saltwater, is not consumable by human beings and land animals. But this water acts as a lifeline for certain aquatic life.

There are various types of water resources, both potable and non-potable, in the world namely, surface water, rainwater, groundwater, well water, lake water, river water, glaciers, snow etc. All these water bodies form the main source of water on the planet. And to keep these water bodies replenished all the time, a healthy water cycle should be maintained in our ecosystem. Any little disturbance in the water cycle can lead to global warming, floods and droughts.

Usages of water

  • Human beings use water for drinking bathing, cooking, washing, watering etc.
  • Industries and factories use water for manufacturing purposes
  • Animals use water for drinking and bathing
  • Plants and trees use water to grow and produce food
  • Farmers use water to cultivate the land and fulfil the population hunger
  • Power plants and nuclear plants use water to produce energy and power

Why is Water Important for the Human Body?

  • More than 70% of our body is made up of water. Without it, the human race will not survive
  • Water in our body helps in regulating body temperature
  • It keeps our organs and tissue moist and functioning
  • It helps in digestion and breaking down of the food we take inside our bodies
  • It keeps our skin healthy and nutritious

Scientists and engineers are working on projects and research, from many years, to convert saltwater into freshwater. If they succeed in doing that, then water will not be scarce anymore, but nevertheless, people should learn to use water judiciously, because we never know what nature might throw at us if we play with it. But till then, the only way out to survive is to use water very irresponsibly and strategically.

It is also predicted that the next world war will be fought for water. The symptoms of that are already being seen in the world nowadays, with examples like India and Pakistan fight over the Indus river, Turkey, Syria and Iraq fighting over Tigris-Euphrates river water, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu fighting over Kaveri river in India. These symptoms, if not taken care now itself, will easily lead to world war having catastrophic effects on humankind.

Before all these leads to the extinction of mankind, all the governments of different countries, people, businesses and organisation should come together and formulate proper policies and laws for responsible usage of water in the future.

Short Essay on Water in English

We have provided a 150 to 200 words essay on water which can be used by school students and children for their assignments and projects.

Water, the life-saving universal solvent is the most important element for the existence of living beings on earth.

Water is usually found in three states of matter, namely liquid, solid and gas. All three forms of water are important for the survival of the human race. Water, being a non-renewable resource is depleting at a very faster rate without any source of replenishment. The only way drinking water can be replenished and regenerated is through a healthy water cycle in the atmosphere. And for this water cycle to be maintained well, human beings need to learn to use natural resources like forest, coal and natural gas efficiently without harming the cycle of life.

Since water supports all forms of life, from surface animals and plant to aquatic plant and animals, the water resource belongs to every being on this plant and human beings should not be selfish in their greed for the usage of water.

The unplanned building of damns and man-made reservoirs, and being a thorn in the natural way of life has all affected the actual cycle of water. This has lead to massive drought and floods in various parts of the world.

All human beings should come together and join hands to use water efficiently and not indulge ourselves in the natural cycle of life and let nature thrive on their own.

10 Lines on Water Essay in English

  • Human beings use water for drinking, bathing, washing, in agriculture, industries and factories
  • More than 60% of the human body is made up of water
  • Animals use water for drinking and bathing purposes
  • Plants, trees and various other living beings use water for its growth and survival
  • It is predicted that the next world war will be fought for water if man does not learn how to use it judiciously

Introduction

Essay on Water Scarcity - Class 9

Causes of Water Scarcity

  • Global Warming:  It is one of the major reasons for many problems like pollution, a rise in temperature, water scarcity, etc. Due to global warming, the icebergs are continuously melting due to the increase in temperature. These icebergs are melting into the sea and as a result, the salty water is increasing day by day instead of freshwater sources.
  • Climate Change:  There is a drastic decrease in the percentage of rainfall these days, which has directly affected our water bodies. Rain is one of the best sources of freshwater. We harvest rainwater and use it in multiple ways but due to the change in climate sometimes we face drought whereas sometimes we also face floods.
  • Reduced Ground Water:  Due to the increased population and excess extraction of groundwater many water bodies like well, lakes have dried. Their number is decreasing day-by-day. At first, it was seen in urban areas but now a day’s villages are also facing this issue. And if groundwater is available somewhere it is polluted.
  • Pollution:  We don’t care much about our rivers and lakes that is because we throw our waste in rivers. The very first thing is there is no water and what so ever is available we have polluted it. The very best example is the Yamuna River. It is nothing more than a drain now.

How to Overcome Water Scarcity

  • Jal Shakti Abhiyan:  For the conservation of rainwater and proving fresh water to everyone. To conduct various camps to teach people the importance of water.
  • Atal Bhujal Yojana:  This is made for protecting the dying water bodies like wells, ponds, etc which also focus on the groundwater management system.
  • Jal Jeevan Mission: This scheme is to focus on water availability in the urban and local areas. And they also focus on the management of household wastewater for agricultural purposes.

Essay on Water Scarcity - Class 9

  • Water ATM: Nowadays these water ATMs are quite famous; they will give you a liter or a glass of water as per your requirement. These machines are customized in such a way that they won’t let extra water to fall. This helps to reduce the wastage of water, especially on the railway stations and public areas.
  • Rain Water Basins:  Nowadays the government is concentrating on harvesting rainwater and big basins are made in villages and outer areas to save rainwater. These water basins are helpful in many ways. They increase the groundwater; they are also helpful in agriculture and in many other ways.

Essay on Water Pollution for Students and Children

500+ words essay on water pollution.

Water is the most important resource for survival on a planet. It is the essence of life on our planet – Earth. Yet if you ever see a river or lake around your city, it would be evident to you that we are facing a very serious problem of Water pollution. Let us educate ourselves about water and water pollution . Two-thirds of the Earth’s surface is covered by water , seventy-six perfect of your body is made up of water.

essay on water pollution

Water and Water Cycle

As you already know water is everywhere and all around.  However, we have a fixed amount of water on earth. It just changes its states and goes through a cyclic order, known as the Water Cycle. The water cycle is a natural process that is continuous in nature. It is the pattern in which the water from oceans, seas, lakes, etc gets evaporated and turns to vapor. After which it goes through the process of condensation, and finally precipitation when it falls back to earth as rain or snow.

What is Water Pollution?

Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (like oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, aquifers, and groundwater) usually caused due to human activities. Water pollution is any change, minor or major in the physical, chemical or biological properties of water that eventually leads to a detrimental consequence of any living organism . Drinking water, called Potable Water, is considered safe enough for human and animal consumption.

Sources of Water Pollution

  • Domestic Waste
  • Industrial effluents
  • Insecticides and pesticides
  • Detergents and Fertilizers

Some of the water pollutions are caused by direct Sources, such as factories, waste management facilities, refineries, etc, that directly releases waste and dangerous by-products into the nearest water source without treating them. Indirect sources include pollutants that infuse in the water bodies via groundwater or soil or via the atmosphere through acidic rain.

Get the huge list of more than 500 Essay Topics and Ideas

Effects of Pollution of Water

The effects of Water Pollution are:

Diseases: In humans, drinking or consuming polluted water in any way has many disastrous effects on our health. It causes typhoid, cholera, hepatitis and various other diseases.

Eradication of Ecosystem: Ecosystem is extremely dynamic and responds to even small changes in the environment. Increasing water pollution can cause an entire ecosystem to collapse if left unchecked.

Eutrophication: Chemicals accumulation and infusion in a water body, encourages the growth of algae. The algae form a layer on top of the pond or lake. Bacteria feed on this algae and this event decreases the amount of oxygen in the water body, severely affecting the aquatic life there

Effects of the food chain: Turmoil in food chain happens when the aquatic animals (fish, prawns, seahorse, etc) consume the toxins and pollutants in the water,  and then the humans consume them.

Prevention of Water Pollution

The best way to prevent large-scale water pollution is to try and reduce its harmful effects. There are numerous small changes we can make to protect ourselves from a future where water is scarce.

Conserve Water: Conserving water should be our first aim. Water wastage is a major problem globally and we are only now waking up to the issue. Simple small changes made domestically will make a huge difference.

Treatment of sewage: Treating waste products before disposing of it in water bodies helps reduce water pollution on a large scale. Agriculture or other industries can reuse this wastewater by reducing its toxic contents.

Use of environment-friendly products: By using soluble products that do not go on to become pollutants, we can reduce the amount of water pollution caused by a household.

Life is ultimately about choices and so is water pollution. We cannot live with sewage-strewn beaches, contaminated rivers , and fish that are poisonous to drink and eat. To avoid these scenarios,  we can work together to keep the environment clean so the water bodies, plants, animals, and people who depend on it remain healthy. We can take individual or teamed action to help reduce water pollution. As an example, by using environmentally friendly detergents, not pouring oil down the drains, reducing the usage of pesticides, and so on. We can take community action too to keep our rivers and seas cleaner. And we can take action as countries and continents to pass laws against water pollution. Working together, we can make water pollution less of a problem—and the world a better place.

Essay on Save Water 1000 Words

As we all know that water gives life to us and other living things on the earth. It is very essential for the survival of human race and other species on earth. Without water, we cannot imagine the existence of life on any planet. Earth is the only known planet till date which has water and life, hence it becomes essential for us to conserve this resource which is the base of life.

The earth is covered with around 71% of water however only 1% is fit for drinking. The normal cycle of water balance runs naturally like evaporation and rain. However, the problem is with the availability of safe drinking water on the earth which is available in a very less amount and here is what the conservation of water comes in the picture.

Why we should Save Water?

In order to know the answer of why we should save water, first we should know the importance of water and how water is valuable to us in our lives. Life is not possible without air, water and food. But most importantly, after air, water is the second most precious in all the three necessities for survival of life.

Now the question is how much pure water we have on earth. According to the statistics, it has been estimated that less than 1% of water on earth is suitable for drinking. If we estimate the ratio of drinking water and total population of the world, it would be, more than a billion of people all across the world are surviving on 1 gallon of water per day. It has also been estimated that more than 3 billion people would suffer water shortages by the year 2025.

Though people have started understanding the value of clean water, but they have still not started to save water. Saving water is a good habit and every one of us should try their best to save water for the continuation of life on this planet. Few years back no one imagined that water would be sold on shops but today it has become a common scenario. We can clearly imagine that, in the near future there would be shortage of clean water all over the world so water conservation is the only solution if we want to avoid this situation.

Some Facts about the Importance of Clean Water

Below are some facts which will help you to know how valuable the clean water is:

  • Around 3.4 million people in the world die every year due to water related diseases.
  • Developing countries are more prone to water borne diseases.
  • Printing of newspaper for a single day consumes around 300 litres of water.
  • Every 15 seconds a child dies due to water born disease in the world.
  • The packaged drinking water business is expected to reach $216 billion by 2025 globally.
  • People in the rural villages of India, Africa and Asia have to go long distances in order to get drinking water.
  • People in India highly suffer from various water born diseases which costs the economy to a great extent.

Ways to Save Water

There are few easy ways which helps to save water without changing your lifestyle. Single person in a home consumes around 60-100 litres of water per day in the household activities. Only 2.5% of the total water consumption is used for drinking and cooking on daily basis and rest of the water is used in other activities like watering plants, toilet use, bathing, laundry, showering etc and if we slightly reduce our consumption in these activities then we can definitely save a good amount of water.

Some of the water saving tips are as follows:

  • Everyone should understand their individual responsibility and try to save water as much as they can in their daily activities.
  • Rainwater Harvesting is one of the best way by which we can use rain water in various purposes and also help to replenish ground water.
  • Always use washing machines and dishwashers with full capacity as this cuts unnecessary washes in between.
  • Use bucket instead of shower to take bath, it saves around 100-150 liters of water every day.
  • Water the plants in the evening so that it doesn’t get evaporated and is used by the plant.
  • Turn off taps tightly wherever you see it running and immediately report water leakage to the concerned department.
  • Celebrate ‘Dry Holi’ with ‘gulals’ by avoiding water colors and save a huge amount of water.
  • Spread the ‘Save Water’ initiative in your neighborhood, localities and schools.
  • We should encourage our family members, children, friends, neighbors and co-workers to do the same from their end to get the positive result.

These tips will definitely help to save water but the most important thing is that it has to be followed strictly. Apart from these things we should also educate people and make them aware about the importance of water. We should also make them realize that water is scarce in nature and it has to be conserved and not wasted for a better tomorrow.

After air, water is the most vital resource which our Mother Nature has given to us. It is not only important to us but it is also essential for all the living species, plants and trees. It is also important for the sustenance of biodiversity of our planet and for food chain. The quantity of clean water is very limited and it is majorly available in lakes, rivers and ground water. Hence it becomes important for us that we conserve it so that it remains available in the future also.

The contamination and pollution of water is a common scenario nowadays which reduces the quality of water and makes it unfit for drinking. It is our prime responsibility that we should stop this and also spread the word of ‘SAVE WATER’ so that we can conserve one of the most valuable and vital resources not only for today but also for our future generations.

Water – A Wonder Liquid: Sources, Importance of Water, Water Cycle

The surface of the Earth is a complex zone in which the three main components of the environment meet, overlap and interact with each other. These are the land, the air, and the water in all three forms. Water is one of the most wonderful gifts of nature that constitutes the maximum part of the biosphere. Like air, water is vital to life as it regulates the physiological activities of animal and plant life. It is rightly phrased “Water: A Wonder liquid” as no living thing; neither plant nor animal can survive without this precious liquid. Do you know that water makes up 70% of our body and more than 80% of fruits and vegetables? Let us learn about the importance of water in sustaining life. For knowing the sources, daily uses of water, physiological significance and more, let’s read this article.

Sources of Water

Water is a colourless, odourless, tasteless universal solvent. It is a compound of two molecules of hydrogen and one molecule of oxygen. Water occupies about 71% of the total Earth surface. 97.5% of the total water is the ocean. About 1.9% occurs as ice caps and glaciers. The remaining 0.6% of the hydrosphere supports life. It is called freshwater. Freshwater can be obtained from two main sources. These are: 1. Surface Water: Approximately 10% of the total freshwater occurs in the form of surface water. Rainwater that runs off on the surface of Earth is called surface water. It remains stored in small water bodies like ponds, pools, lakes, rivers, and streams. 2. Underground Water: Some of the rainwater seeps into the soil and accumulates down under the Earth’s surface. It is called underground water or subsoil water . It is pumped out using hand pumps and tube-wells for supply in towns and cities for domestic and agricultural use.

Uses of Water

We need water for various purposes. The main uses of water can be classified into household , agricultural , and industrial . 1. Household Use: Water is required in our daily life. We use water for drinking, bathing, cooking, cleaning, gardening. This makes us realise how much we depend on water in our daily activities. 2. Agricultural Use: A large amount of water is required for crop production. It is because a large amount of water is lost through transpiration. The amount of transpired water is, in fact, several hundred times greater than that is used by crops. 3. Industrial Use: Industries are often set up near the water bodies. It is because they need a huge amount of water. In a hydroelectric power plant, water is used to generate electricity. It is also used as a coolant.

Why is Water a Wonder Liquid?

Water is important not only to humans but for almost all living organisms in the world. Let us look at some examples to understand this better

Importance of Water in Plants

Water plays an essential role in plant life that can be mentioned under the following points: 1. Water contributes to plant growth and development as it is one of the main natural resources required for the germination of seeds. Seeds require an adequate amount of water and oxygen and germinate under suitable environmental conditions. 2. Water serves as a medium of transport for various dissolved substances like gases, minerals, organic substances through the xylem and phloem. 3. Water takes part in several metabolic reactions in plants, such as photosynthesis. 4. Water dissolved nutrients in the soil can be easily absorbed by the roots of the plant. 5. Water is the main constituent of the cell protoplasm. Therefore, it helps to maintain the shape (turgidity) of the cell. 6. Water also serves as a medium of heat transfer and therefore regulates the temperature. 7. A continuous water column is formed due to the transpiration pull that prevents the wilting of leaves.

Importance of Water in Humans

Potable water is safe to drink and maintain the proper functioning of the body that can be described as follows: 1. Water constitutes 83% of our blood, 75% of our brain, 22% of our bones, and 75% of our muscles. 2. Water is the main component of saliva. Our body produces enough saliva by the intake of water and other essential fluids. 3. Water helps to regulate the body temperature by the process of perspiration. During summers, the sweat glands release a large amount of water mixed with body salt (sweat); the evaporation of sweat causes cooling effects and helps to maintain a healthy temperature of the body. 4. Water is an essential medium for carrying all the metabolic reactions in our body. A healthy metabolism boosts the energy level of our body. 5. Water serves as a lubricant and cushion for our joints and spinal cord and protects them from external injury. 6. Water helps to excrete the wastes through urination, perspiration. Adequate intake of water keeps our kidneys healthy. 7. Water facilitates bowel movements and prevents constipation. 8. Water improves the circulation of oxygen through the blood and keeps the skin healthy. 9. Water maintains the osmoregulation and body pH.

Water Cycle

The percentage of usable water is less than 1%. With such a limited supply of freshwater, why does our Earth not run out of fresh water? The secret behind this is the continuous circulation of water that is called the water cycle. The constant circulation of water from Earth’s surface to the atmosphere and from the atmosphere to Earth’s surface is called the water cycle.

essay on water class 9

Fig: Water Cycle

1. The heat from the sunlight evaporates the water from the water bodies. 2. The air containing water vapour is heated by the sun. Hot air is lighter, rises high in the sky. 3. Water vapour present in this air becomes condensed at high altitudes and converts into tiny water droplets. 4. The tiny water droplets join together to form large water droplets in the cloud. 5. These water droplets fall on the Earth in the form of rain. In this way, the water which was taken from the Earth returns to the Earth. Although water keeps circulating in the biosphere, still the level of available water steadily goes down on the Earth. Keeping in view the shortage of usable water, we must put the greatest possible effects to conserve water. Rainwater harvesting is the best technique to save water.

Pollution of Water

Definition: Any undesirable change in the physical, chemical and biological properties of water that makes the water unfit for use is called water pollution. Causes: The causes of water pollution include: 1. Sewage: Wastes from domestic activities such as detergents, human excreta are called sewage that is discharged directly into the water bodies and pollutes them. 2. Fertilisers & Pesticides (DDT, Polychlorinated biphenyls): These seeps into the groundwater through the soil pores and pollute the subsoil water. 3. Heavy metals: These metals mainly include mercury, cadmium, lead, and nickel. These metals disturb the normal pH of the water and make the water toxic. 4. Biological pollutants: These are microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, protozoans, helminths, algae. These microorganisms consume oxygen dissolved in water. Hence the water becomes oxygen-depleted. 5. Oil spills: An accidental discharge of petroleum in the ocean is one of the major causes of water pollution.

Effects of Water Pollution

1. The solid wastes in the water (sewage) facilitate the growth of disease-causing microorganisms. When we drink this contaminated water, microorganisms enter the body and cause diseases such as cholera, typhoid, dysentery. 2. Fertilisers and pesticides accumulate in the groundwater and make it inappropriate for plants and therefore affect the growth and development of plants. 3. Heavy metal contamination of water can cause serious health problems. Mercury poisoning causes Minamata disease due to the consumption of mercury-containing fish. The metal wastes are also harmful to humans when they get absorbed in our bodies. They can damage the kidney, nervous system etc. 4. Organic wastes released in the water facilitate the multiplication of bacteria in the water that consumes the dissolved oxygen and, in turn, causes the death of other aquatic animals due to the lack of oxygen. 5. Oil spills in the water lead to the death of aquatic organisms and cause an imbalance in the aquatic ecosystem. These are extremely harmful to coral reefs and can severely damage marine biodiversity. 6. Thermal pollution is a type of water pollution in which the temperature of water bodies rises mainly due to the industrial effluents that adversely affect the health of aquatic animals.

Water is an inexhaustible natural resource that occupies the maximum part of the Earth. Water is the basis of our life. We cannot imagine our life without water. Apart from using water in our household activities, water supports several biochemical processes in living beings and delivers the substances to their target organs inside the organism’s body.

Moreover, water not only fulfils the purpose of daily activities and metabolic activities but itself is the main component of the plant and animal body. Due to these amazing facts, the title Water: A Wonder Liquid is wholly justified for this natural liquid.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Water: A Wonder Liquid

Water Cycle

Last Updated on July 3, 2023 By Mrs Shilpi Nagpal

Question 1 What are biochemical cycles?

Question 2 Give diagrammatic representation of water cycle?

Question 3 What is water cycle?

Question 4 Explain water cycle?

Biochemical Cycles

The abiotic and biotic component of biosphere constantly interact with each other to form a dynamic but stable system. These interactions consist of a transfer of matter and energy between the different components of the biosphere.

water cycle

The process in which water evaporates and falls on the land as rain and later flows back into the sea via rivers is called water cycle.

(1) Water evaporates from hydrosphere(oceans, seas, river, lakes, ponds)with sun’s heat and form clouds.

(2) By the help of wind, clouds are blown over the land, where they are cooled enough to drop water as rain.

(3) Rain may fall directly into the ocean also. Some water from rain and melting snow soaks into ground, but some flows in rivers and then to seas.

(4) The ground water comes to surface again by springs and pumps. It is used in agriculture, industry, home. Water then evaporates into the atmosphere. It also evaporates from snow, reservoirs, ground.

(5) Water vapour added by evaporation to atmosphere again form clouds.

As water flows through or over the rocks containing soluble minerals, various soluble minerals get dissolved in it and transported to distant places. Many nutrients are carried by water from parent rock to river and then to the seas. Hence these minerals are used by marine organisms.

Paragraph on Save Water - Check Samples for Various Word Limits

Water is the most essential and life-saving natural resource. It is the most precious gift given by the Earth to humans. Water is important for human beings and necessary for the entire ecosystem. God has gifted us with plenty of water, but only a small part of it is safe drinking water, and that is why we need to spread awareness about saving water.

As humans, we might not realise the importance of water, but pollution and waste have created a severe scarcity of freshwater available to us. Therefore, there have been a lot of awareness campaigns and agitations to save water.

Water is the most important natural resource. It is a necessary component of all life on earth, whether human life, plants, animals, or any living being. No living organism can ever survive without water. Water is also required for agricultural and industrial activities, other than for routine tasks. Today, we are unaware of the dangers posed by water wastage. We make only a feeble attempt to conserve water. Water is wasted in social gatherings, programmes, and celebrations. Every day, we waste water in our homes as well. We have this habit of leaving the tap open while brushing, washing, bathing, etc. So, significant actions must be taken to conserve water.

Water is the most important and valuable resource, and our body contains approximately 70% of water. We require water every day for our personal uses like cooking, washing, bathing, drinking, etc. Our body also requires approximately 4-5 litres of water every day. Water is not only essential for human beings but also for animals, plants, birds, etc. That is why we need to save water. It is as essential to life on Earth as air. Water has become scarce due to overuse and misuse of water. Human beings and other living creatures might face life-and-death situations due to a lack of access to water. Low precipitation and excessive groundwater consumption are causing water scarcity in many parts of the world. The groundwater is either polluted or wasted in some areas. Dry conditions result from the wastage of natural water. High population expansion also plays a crucial role in causing water scarcity. Due to overpopulation, the misuse of water has increased, and according to WHO, approximately 844 million people do not have access to fresh drinking water.

Water is the most basic resource without which no life can exist. Despite the fact that water covers 75% of the earth’s surface, only 2% of it is fresh water. As a result, fresh water is becoming increasingly valuable and should not be wasted. For life on the earth, water is as important as air. Water scarcity has been caused by the misuse and overuse of water in a few locations. People and other living species may face life-or-death situations if water is inaccessible. Freshwater is the resource we utilise the most, yet it is also the resource we waste the most. Another factor that wastes water is industrialization. It pollutes the water by discharging chemical waste into water bodies. When water is mixed with harmful substances, it becomes dangerous to use. The biggest causes of water waste are a lack of awareness among individuals and the thoughtlessness of the authorities. Water is a fundamental resource, and as a result, we must conserve it for future generations as well as ourselves.

For humans and other living beings, water is the most valuable natural gift. It is impossible to imagine a world without water. Freshwater makes up only 2% of the total water on Earth, which humans use every day. This indicates that it is extremely rare and shouldn’t be squandered under any circumstances. Because of human activities, the Earth’s freshwater reserve is rapidly depleting each day. The most important reasons for water usage are contamination and the wastage of water. We can survive without food for longer periods of time than we can go without water. A few plants can’t live without water for more than a day. Water also supports a large number of aquatic organisms. It is now the perfect time to make a full-fledged effort to conserve water. We need to make people more aware of the value of water and the harm we are causing by wasting it. We are making coffins for humanity and all creatures by continuing to waste water. While individuals like us to feign ignorance, the planet continues to get closer to a dry end. We claim that we have control over the situation, but we are not prepared to respond immediately. We don’t admit how dreadful a situation is until we are confronted with all its after-effects. If we don’t want to be accused of making the world dry and lifeless, it’s time to start acting on it. As It is already late to spread awareness, now it is time to take preventive measures.

Why do we need to write about saving water?

How can we stop wasting water and save it for future generations.

Essay on Save Water Save Life

Water is the most important and valuable natural resource on Earth. It sustains all life. There is no life without water. Water is not only important for human beings but for the entire ecosystem. Without enough water, the existence of humans, as well as animals, is next to impossible. After fresh air, water is the second most important natural resource for the survival of any living being.

Water is necessary for the survival of each living creature on this planet, be it a small worm, plant, or full-grown tree.  Animals and plants  cannot survive without water. About 71% of Earth’s surface is covered with water. Unfortunately, only 3% of the water available  is freshwater. About two-thirds of the freshwater lies in the form of frozen glaciers and ice caps. The rest of the small portion is available in the form of groundwater and surface water.

We totally depend on water for multiple purposes. Water is used in agriculture for the irrigation of crops. We use water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, bathing, and other domestic purposes. Water is used for recreational activities. In industries, water is used as a coolant, solvent and also used in other manufacturing purposes. Hydroelectricity is generated with the help of water. Water is also used for navigation and transportation of goods. This tells us how water is the most essential component of life and every drop of water is vital for sustenance. Therefore, water conservation is important to save life on this planet.

Importance of Water:

The basic use of water is drinking, bathing, agriculture, irrigation, hospitality, factories, etc.

Water helps in blood circulation and improves metabolism in the human body

The entire aquatic ecosystem is located in water. It is a home for all the aquatic animals

Water is a major source of transportation after land and air.

Water aids in saliva secretion and oxygen delivery to our bodily cells.

Some countries have abundant water resources for their residents and serve        the people, whereas others lack natural resources even for survival.

Depletion of fresh water has become a threat to our existence. According to some scientists, the quantity and the quality of water are degrading day by day. Although Earth is covered with almost 71% of water, the quality is that we cannot use it in day-to-day life for domestic purposes. Water quality is so poor that people in some places are prone to several water-borne diseases such as Eluru, caused by contaminated water.

These instances are eye-opening examples and should be taken seriously for better living conditions for us and our future generation.

Below are the Reasons for Shortage of Fresh Water:

Growth of population leads to excessive consumption of water.

Daily excessive wastage of water.

The rapid growth of industries has increased the problem of proper disposal of waste material from them. The waste products from these industries contain extremely poisonous elements that are polluting the rivers and other water bodies.

Pesticides and chemical fertilisers that are used to treat crops also pollute the fresh water.

Sewage waste that is dumped into the rivers is making the water unsuitable for drinking and washing causing several water-borne diseases like cholera, jaundice and typhoid.

Use of plastics and disposing them carelessly in the water bodies are affecting aquatic life and further disturbing the entire ecosystem.

Global warming is another major reason for the scarcity of water on earth. According to several types of research, because of global warming, the world will face more stress for water scarcity till the year 2050.

We now need to be aware of the depletion of fresh water and take adequate    measures to stop this.

Saving Water: Need of the Hour

Many places face extreme water scarcity due to extremely bad weather conditions, leading to less rainfall and groundwater depletion. In other parts of the world, groundwater is either unusable or overused. As the world's population is growing, so increase in industries and globalisation, causing groundwater to be overused and resulting in water scarcity.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) data shows that many people on this planet don't have access to clean and fresh drinking water. These situations are becoming worse day by day, and we need an immediate plan to control this situation. Various collective measures have to be taken by every individual on this planet and the government of every country to control water scarcity.

Government should impose some strict rules for the conservation of water. The government and the citizens have to take the initiative to create awareness and promote the “conservation of water.” One such initiative taken by the Modi government in India was “JANSHAKTI FOR JALSHAKTI.” This programme began as a means of working toward a brighter future.

Initiatives taken by Some State Governments:

The Punjab government contributed to saving water resources by avoiding waterlogging and fixing the drain  leakage.

The Rajasthan government has taken the initiative to construct small ponds, which  helped the local people of Rajasthan in many ways.

Villages of Telangana have constructed water tanks to conserve rainwater for future use.

These states are an inspiration, and others should also take a step forward to conserve and clean the water, water bodies, and groundwater.

Water saving should be and is the universal responsibility of every human being, living on this Earth.

There are many ways in which we can save water and reduce their pollution:

Be responsible to save water daily. Use only the required amount of water and avoid wastage. We should use water wisely.

We should use a washing machine to full capacity for washing clothes.

We should not let the tap run while washing hands and face.

We should water plants in the evening or early morning to minimise evaporation.

We should make provisions to store rainwater on rooftops and reuse the water for household purposes.

Bigger Communities and farmers should adapt to the practice of Rainwater harvesting.

The industrial waste should be treated properly instead of dumping it into rivers.

We should stop using plastics and dispose of them in an adequate way.

We can make people aware about water problems by means of social campaigns and other ways.

We should educate our children about water saving from an early age.

Reusing the water is an important way to save and prevent the scarcity of water. Bathing water can be recycled and used for planting or cleaning.

Rainwater harvesting is the method of collecting rainwater and conserving them for future use.

Conservation of groundwater is another important method in the preservation of groundwater and using it in the future.

 Prevention of waterlogging.

We cannot imagine our lives without water. It is unfortunate that mankind has neglected this precious gift from God. Conservation of water is a necessity to save life. All living organisms on this planet need water to survive. If we do not give importance to saving or conservation of water then our future generations will face water scarcity.
