How to Choose a Thesis Topic
Selecting a fitting and feasible thesis topic is a crucial first step for any graduate student. The choice of a thesis topic not only determines the direction of your academic journey but also impacts your motivation, career trajectory, and the contribution you will make to your field of study. Therefore, understanding how to effectively choose a thesis topic is foundational to your success both as a student and as a budding scholar.
What Makes a Good Thesis Topic
- Relevance: A good thesis topic should be relevant to current issues or questions in your field. It should aim to fill a gap in knowledge or contribute to ongoing debates among scholars. Relevance ensures that your research findings will be of interest to others in your discipline and could potentially influence future research, policy, or practice.
- Originality: Originality involves bringing new insights or proposing a novel approach to a problem. It doesn’t necessarily mean venturing into a completely unexplored territory but can involve taking a fresh perspective on existing questions. A thesis that introduces original concepts or challenges established norms tends to stand out and captivate the interest of the academic community.
- Manageability: A feasible thesis topic is one that can realistically be researched and completed within the constraints of your resources, time frame, and academic requirements. Manageability requires careful consideration of the scope of the research and the availability of data and methods needed to conduct it effectively.
- Interest and passion: Passion fuels perseverance, which is crucial in the long and sometimes daunting process of completing a thesis. Choosing a topic that genuinely interests you will keep you engaged and motivated during your research journey. It also often leads to more profound and insightful scholarly work because you are more likely to go above and beyond in exploring something you care deeply about.
Moving from a Thesis Idea to a Thesis Topic
- Initial brainstorming techniques: Begin by jotting down various ideas that spark your interest. This initial phase is about exploring broadly and creatively without restricting your thoughts. Use mind mapping, lists, or free-writing techniques to generate and record ideas as they come to you.
- Narrowing down ideas based on research feasibility and interest: Once you have a list of potential ideas, evaluate each based on how interesting they are to you and how feasible they are in terms of research scope and resources available. Discard ideas that are too broad, too narrow, or not sufficiently supported by available data or methods.
- Importance of preliminary research: Conducting preliminary research is essential to determine if there is enough existing material to support your topic. This research can also reveal whether your idea has already been extensively covered, prompting you to adjust your angle or approach to ensure originality.
Connecting a Specific Thesis Topic to a Bigger Idea
- Aligning the topic with broader themes and research questions: Your thesis should not only address a specific issue but also connect to larger conceptual or empirical questions in your field. This alignment helps to position your research within broader scholarly conversations and enhances its impact and relevance.
- Ensuring the topic contributes to the field: The best thesis topics are those that contribute something valuable and substantive to their disciplines. Your topic should promise to provide insights, solutions, or new understandings that will add to the knowledge base of your field.
How to Refine Your Thesis Topic
- Seeking feedback from advisors and peers: Regular feedback is invaluable in refining your topic. Advisors can provide perspective on the significance and feasibility of your topic, while peers might offer fresh ideas or pose questions you hadn’t considered.
- Refining research questions: As you delve deeper into your topic, refine your research questions to ensure they are clear, focused, and answerable within the scope of your study. This might involve narrowing or sometimes slightly broadening the scope of your inquiry.
- Adjusting the scope of research: Based on feedback and preliminary findings, adjust the scope of your research as needed to ensure that it remains manageable and within the bounds of available resources, time, and academic requirements.
Choosing and refining a thesis topic is a dynamic and iterative process that requires thoughtful consideration, preliminary research, and ongoing adjustments. The journey from a broad idea to a refined research question involves not only identifying a subject that is relevant, original, and manageable but also one that ignites your passion and curiosity. By following these steps and continually seeking feedback, you can ensure that your thesis will be a meaningful and rewarding endeavor.

113 Great Research Paper Topics
General Education
One of the hardest parts of writing a research paper can be just finding a good topic to write about. Fortunately we've done the hard work for you and have compiled a list of 113 interesting research paper topics. They've been organized into ten categories and cover a wide range of subjects so you can easily find the best topic for you.
In addition to the list of good research topics, we've included advice on what makes a good research paper topic and how you can use your topic to start writing a great paper.
What Makes a Good Research Paper Topic?
Not all research paper topics are created equal, and you want to make sure you choose a great topic before you start writing. Below are the three most important factors to consider to make sure you choose the best research paper topics.
#1: It's Something You're Interested In
A paper is always easier to write if you're interested in the topic, and you'll be more motivated to do in-depth research and write a paper that really covers the entire subject. Even if a certain research paper topic is getting a lot of buzz right now or other people seem interested in writing about it, don't feel tempted to make it your topic unless you genuinely have some sort of interest in it as well.
#2: There's Enough Information to Write a Paper
Even if you come up with the absolute best research paper topic and you're so excited to write about it, you won't be able to produce a good paper if there isn't enough research about the topic. This can happen for very specific or specialized topics, as well as topics that are too new to have enough research done on them at the moment. Easy research paper topics will always be topics with enough information to write a full-length paper.
Trying to write a research paper on a topic that doesn't have much research on it is incredibly hard, so before you decide on a topic, do a bit of preliminary searching and make sure you'll have all the information you need to write your paper.
#3: It Fits Your Teacher's Guidelines
Don't get so carried away looking at lists of research paper topics that you forget any requirements or restrictions your teacher may have put on research topic ideas. If you're writing a research paper on a health-related topic, deciding to write about the impact of rap on the music scene probably won't be allowed, but there may be some sort of leeway. For example, if you're really interested in current events but your teacher wants you to write a research paper on a history topic, you may be able to choose a topic that fits both categories, like exploring the relationship between the US and North Korea. No matter what, always get your research paper topic approved by your teacher first before you begin writing.

How to Write a Great Research Paper
Even great research paper topics won't give you a great research paper if you don't hone your topic before and during the writing process. Follow these three tips to turn good research paper topics into great papers.
#1: Figure Out Your Thesis Early
Before you start writing a single word of your paper, you first need to know what your thesis will be. Your thesis is a statement that explains what you intend to prove/show in your paper. Every sentence in your research paper will relate back to your thesis, so you don't want to start writing without it!
As some examples, if you're writing a research paper on if students learn better in same-sex classrooms, your thesis might be "Research has shown that elementary-age students in same-sex classrooms score higher on standardized tests and report feeling more comfortable in the classroom."
If you're writing a paper on the causes of the Civil War, your thesis might be "While the dispute between the North and South over slavery is the most well-known cause of the Civil War, other key causes include differences in the economies of the North and South, states' rights, and territorial expansion."
#2: Back Every Statement Up With Research
Remember, this is a research paper you're writing, so you'll need to use lots of research to make your points. Every statement you give must be backed up with research, properly cited the way your teacher requested. You're allowed to include opinions of your own, but they must also be supported by the research you give.
#3: Do Your Research Before You Begin Writing
You don't want to start writing your research paper and then learn that there isn't enough research to back up the points you're making, or, even worse, that the research contradicts the points you're trying to make!
Get most of your research on your good research topics done before you begin writing. Then use the research you've collected to create a rough outline of what your paper will cover and the key points you're going to make. This will help keep your paper clear and organized, and it'll ensure you have enough research to produce a strong paper.

Throughout your college and graduate school career, you will be required to write hundreds of academic papers across myriad subjects. Choosing good thesis topics is just one of the major factors necessary to achieve academic excellence. This article does not tell you how to write a good thesis but focuses on the process of developing great senior thesis topics that are challenging yet don’t leave you feeling overwhelmed.

Computer Science Thesis Topics
Psychology thesis topics, art history thesis topics, sociology thesis topics, economics thesis topics, psychology dissertation topics, architecture thesis topics, criminal justice thesis topics, philosophy thesis topics, history thesis topics, ms thesis topics, where you can find thesis writing help for your topics.
Our list of 170 free thesis statement topics is broken into 12 of the most popular subjects. These are only suggestions and you’re certainly encouraged to modify them as you deem appropriate. Keep in mind that good dissertation topics should aim to push the envelope of academic research while answering important scholarly questions within the field. Don’t feel constrained by what these thesis topics attempt to explore – what inspires your curiosity is the most important aspect of writing a thesis that warrants readership and appreciation.
How to Develop and Choose Great Thesis Topics?
Your thesis statement should be interesting.
You’ve likely heard over and over that the best master thesis topics should always be on something interesting – but does not take this to mean that it only applies to what a reader thinks is interesting. You should genuinely be curious about the topic you want to explore. This will invariably lead to more effective research, writing, and presentation of the chosen topic.
Make Sure You Can Find Enough Resources
Time is limited, and so too are resources. If your topic is too narrow you may not have access to all the resources you need to adequately answer the questions you seek. Ask the resource librarian for some dissertation topic examples to get a sense of the number of resources you will need to include in the bibliography and then triple that number. This is the average amount of research materials you will need to locate in your study.
Meet with Your Advisor to Discuss Options
Finally, you will need to meet with your academic advisor throughout the process of finishing your capstone project, so you will benefit from meeting with him or her as you consider your topics to discuss options. If, for instance, you are going over art history thesis topics , an advisor can point you to previous studies, research, resources, and more. You may find early that your topic may not be doable – and save yourself time by choosing altogether different.

If you’re struggling to get started, this step-by-step video tutorial will help you find the perfect research topic.
Research Topic FAQs
What (exactly) is a research topic.
A research topic is the subject of a research project or study – for example, a dissertation or thesis. A research topic typically takes the form of a problem to be solved, or a question to be answered.
A good research topic should be specific enough to allow for focused research and analysis. For example, if you are interested in studying the effects of climate change on agriculture, your research topic could focus on how rising temperatures have impacted crop yields in certain regions over time.

What constitutes a good research topic?
A strong research topic comprises three important qualities : originality, value and feasibility.
- Originality – a good topic explores an original area or takes a novel angle on an existing area of study.
- Value – a strong research topic provides value and makes a contribution, either academically or practically.
- Feasibility – a good research topic needs to be practical and manageable, given the resource constraints you face.

What's the difference between a research topic and research problem?
A research topic and a research problem are two distinct concepts that are often confused. A research topic is a broader label that indicates the focus of the study , while a research problem is an issue or gap in knowledge within the broader field that needs to be addressed.
To illustrate this distinction, consider a student who has chosen “teenage pregnancy in the United Kingdom” as their research topic. This research topic could encompass any number of issues related to teenage pregnancy such as causes, prevention strategies, health outcomes for mothers and babies, etc.
Within this broad category (the research topic) lies potential areas of inquiry that can be explored further – these become the research problems . For example:
- What factors contribute to higher rates of teenage pregnancy in certain communities?
- How do different types of parenting styles affect teen pregnancy rates?
- What interventions have been successful in reducing teenage pregnancies?
Simply put, a key difference between a research topic and a research problem is scope ; the research topic provides an umbrella under which multiple questions can be asked, while the research problem focuses on one specific question or set of questions within that larger context.
How can I find potential research topics for my project?
There are many steps involved in the process of finding and choosing a high-quality research topic for a dissertation or thesis. We cover these steps in detail in this video (also accessible below).
How can I find quality sources for my research topic?
Finding quality sources is an essential step in the topic ideation process. To do this, you should start by researching scholarly journals, books, and other academic publications related to your topic. These sources can provide reliable information on a wide range of topics. Additionally, they may contain data or statistics that can help support your argument or conclusions.
Identifying Relevant Sources
When searching for relevant sources, it’s important to look beyond just published material; try using online databases such as Google Scholar or JSTOR to find articles from reputable journals that have been peer-reviewed by experts in the field.
You can also use search engines like Google or Bing to locate websites with useful information about your topic. However, be sure to evaluate any website before citing it as a source—look for evidence of authorship (such as an “About Us” page) and make sure the content is up-to-date and accurate before relying on it.
Evaluating Sources
Once you’ve identified potential sources for your research project, take some time to evaluate them thoroughly before deciding which ones will best serve your purpose. Consider factors such as author credibility (are they an expert in their field?), publication date (is the source current?), objectivity (does the author present both sides of an issue?) and relevance (how closely does this source relate to my specific topic?).
By researching the current literature on your topic, you can identify potential sources that will help to provide quality information. Once you’ve identified these sources, it’s time to look for a gap in the research and determine what new knowledge could be gained from further study.
How can I find a good research gap?
Finding a strong gap in the literature is an essential step when looking for potential research topics. We explain what research gaps are and how to find them in this post.
How should I evaluate potential research topics/ideas?
When evaluating potential research topics, it is important to consider the factors that make for a strong topic (we discussed these earlier). Specifically:
- Originality
- Feasibility
So, when you have a list of potential topics or ideas, assess each of them in terms of these three criteria. A good topic should take a unique angle, provide value (either to academia or practitioners), and be practical enough for you to pull off, given your limited resources.
Finally, you should also assess whether this project could lead to potential career opportunities such as internships or job offers down the line. Make sure that you are researching something that is relevant enough so that it can benefit your professional development in some way. Additionally, consider how each research topic aligns with your career goals and interests; researching something that you are passionate about can help keep motivation high throughout the process.
How can I assess the feasibility of a research topic?
When evaluating the feasibility and practicality of a research topic, it is important to consider several factors.
First, you should assess whether or not the research topic is within your area of competence. Of course, when you start out, you are not expected to be the world’s leading expert, but do should at least have some foundational knowledge.
Time commitment
When considering a research topic, you should think about how much time will be required for completion. Depending on your field of study, some topics may require more time than others due to their complexity or scope.
Additionally, if you plan on collaborating with other researchers or institutions in order to complete your project, additional considerations must be taken into account such as coordinating schedules and ensuring that all parties involved have adequate resources available.
Resources needed
It’s also critically important to consider what type of resources are necessary in order to conduct the research successfully. This includes physical materials such as lab equipment and chemicals but can also include intangible items like access to certain databases or software programs which may be necessary depending on the nature of your work. Additionally, if there are costs associated with obtaining these materials then this must also be factored into your evaluation process.
Potential risks
It’s important to consider the inherent potential risks for each potential research topic. These can include ethical risks (challenges getting ethical approval), data risks (not being able to access the data you’ll need), technical risks relating to the equipment you’ll use and funding risks (not securing the necessary financial back to undertake the research).

How do you write a topic thesis statement?
Writing a topic thesis statement involves condensing the primary idea or argument of your paper into a concise, clear statement. Here’s how to craft one:
- Identify Your Topic : Begin by clearly defining what you’ll be discussing or analyzing.
- Clarify Your Opinion or Position : What do you want to say about the topic? Your thesis should not merely state a fact, but it should announce your position on the topic.
- Make it Specific : A broad or vague thesis statement will be hard to defend. Ensure your statement is detailed enough to give your readers a clear sense of your argument.
- Ensure It’s Arguable : A thesis statement should be something people could reasonably have differing opinions on. If no one could possibly disagree with your thesis, you might not be presenting a strong enough argument.
- Keep It Concise : Your thesis should be one or two sentences long. If it’s too long or complicated, you might lose your readers.
- Revise As Necessary : As you write and research, your perspective might change. Revisit and revise your thesis statement as necessary.
How do you choose a Topic for Thesis Statement?
Choosing the right topic for your thesis statement is pivotal for crafting a compelling argument. Follow these steps:
- Interest : Choose a topic that genuinely interests you. It makes the research and writing process more engaging.
- Relevance : Ensure the topic is relevant to your assignment or the subject you’re studying.
- Research Scope : Ensure there’s enough information available to support your thesis. Preliminary research can help gauge this.
- Originality : Opt for a fresh perspective or a less explored aspect of a common topic.
- Specificity : Rather than a broad topic, narrow it down to a specific issue or question. This helps in creating a focused argument.
- Seek Feedback : Discuss potential topics with peers, instructors, or advisors to get their input.
What is a thesis statement with 3 topics?
A thesis statement with three topics, often called a three-point thesis statement, introduces three primary arguments or points in support of the central claim. It provides a structured approach, offering a roadmap for the reader about what to expect in the body of the paper.

In this example, the three topics that will be explored further in the paper are balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and adequate sleep. You may also be interested to browse through our other health thesis statement .
Tips for Selecting a Topic for Thesis Statement:
- Stay Curious : Your enthusiasm for a topic will shine through in your writing. Choose something that you’re curious about.
- Consider the Length : If it’s a longer paper, ensure the topic has enough depth to explore. Conversely, for a shorter paper, avoid topics that are too expansive.
- Check Credibility : Ensure that the sources available for your topic are credible and varied.
- Avoid Overly Polarizing Topics : While controversial topics can be intriguing, they can also be challenging. Ensure you’re comfortable navigating both sides of the argument.
- Test Your Topic : Try writing a preliminary thesis statement or an introduction. If you struggle, the topic might be too broad or too narrow.
- Stay Updated : If you’re choosing a current event or a recent development in your field, stay updated with the latest news or research related to it.
- Brainstorm : Write down all potential topics and narrow them down based on interest, relevance, and feasibility.

Thesis Topics That Will Propel Your Research Forward
No matter how much you dig into research, picking perfect thesis topics is always a tough nut to crack for students. With countless paths to explore, it's common to feel swamped and unsure how to begin.
We understand the struggle you're going through, which is why our thesis writing service experts gathered a bunch of solid topics for you to mull over. These thesis ideas span various fields of study, ensuring every student can find their own groove!
How to Choose a Good Thesis Topic?
Selecting a good thesis topic can be the trickiest part of the thesis-writing process. However, remember that your topic doesn't have to be flawless initially. The goal is to start with ideas that catch your interest and then shape them into captivating topics you'll be eager to delve into. Here are some steps to guide you:
- Pose the Right Question
Kick off by asking the right research question. Your thesis essentially responds to this question. But, steer clear of questions with simple 'yes' or 'no' answers. Instead of asking, 'Does technology impact communication?' broaden it to, 'How does technology influence interpersonal communication?' This opens up avenues for exploring different angles and crafting a more detailed thesis.
- Consider Three Key Aspects
Phenomenon: Pin down a specific subject, like 'online shopping habits' or 'work-from-home productivity.'
Point of View: Decide how you want to approach the subject, whether from a cultural or economic standpoint.
Context: Specify a particular time frame or circumstance for your research, such as 'during a pandemic' or 'in rural communities.'
- Collaborate with Peers and Instructors
Great ideas often stem from collaboration rather than working solo. Share and discuss your interests with classmates and teachers. Don't worry if your ideas are still vague – that's normal. Ask for insights on your topic and suggestions for relevant sources. This collaborative process helps narrow your focus and uncover potential avenues for exploration.
7 Tips for Writing a Decent Thesis
Before you dive into the topic suggestions, take a moment to go over these writing tips. We get it, you might be tired of hearing them, but don't brush them off. Even though they're kind of cliché, they're still important!
- Break It Down: Instead of trying to tackle your entire thesis in one go, break it down into smaller, manageable tasks. Set deadlines for each section or chapter to keep yourself on track.
- Back It Up: When making arguments or claims in your research thesis, always provide evidence to support them. Use reliable sources such as peer-reviewed articles, books, and reputable websites.
- Revise and Refine: Understand that your first draft is just the beginning. Pay attention to clarity, coherence, and flow. Trim unnecessary words or sentences, restructure paragraphs for better organization, and refine your arguments for maximum impact.
- Stay Organized: Keep all your research materials, notes, drafts, and references organized from the start. Use tools like folders, digital apps, or note-taking software to categorize and store your resources efficiently.
- Seek Feedback: Don't work in isolation. Share your research with peers, instructors, or advisors and actively seek their feedback. Constructive criticism can help you identify blind spots, strengthen weak arguments, and improve overall clarity.
- Be Clear and Concise: Aim for clarity and simplicity in your writing. Avoid unnecessary jargon, complex sentences, or convoluted language that may confuse your readers. Use straightforward language to communicate your research ideas effectively.
- Take Breaks: Writing a research thesis is mentally demanding, so it's essential to take regular breaks to rest and recharge. Schedule short breaks throughout your writing sessions to prevent burnout and maintain focus. Engage in activities that relax and rejuvenate you, whether it's going for a walk, practicing mindfulness, or spending time with loved ones.
