NOUNS Words that you use to name a: person place thing idea

CONCRETE NOUNS • Things you can see: • Person • Place • Thing

ABSTRACT NOUNS • Things you can not see • ideas • feelings • emotions

PROPER NOUNS • A specific name for a person, place or thing • Always begins with a capital letter Statue of Liberty Spot Janice and Tania

COMMON NOUNS • Generic name for a person, place or thing • Begins with a smaller letter (lower case) chair palace doctor

SINGULAR NOUNS • A noun that names one person, one place, or one thing

PLURAL NOUNS • A noun that names more than one person, place, or thing

1 • To form the plural of most nouns, just add –s Examples: sticks, cows, cars, girls

2 When the singular noun ends in: s, ch, sh, x, or z -----add –es Examples: lunches, foxes, classes, arches

3 • When the noun ends in “o” then, add –s or –es • Examples: piano ---pianos studio---studios echo---echoes hero---heroes potato---potatoes

4 When the noun ends in “y”, with a consonant before it, change “y” to “i” and add –es Examples: fly ---flies penny---pennies candy---candies

5 • For most nouns ending in “f” or “fe”, add –es For some nouns ending in “f” or “fe”, change the “f” to a “v” and add –es or –s Examples: belief ---beliefs roof---roofs thief---thieves knife---knives life---lives elf---elves

6 • Some nouns are the same for both singular and plural Examples: deer, trout, sheep, moose, salmon

7 • Some nouns form their plural in special ways Examples: mouse---mice goose---geese tooth---teeth foot---feet ox---oxen

8 • Some nouns are always in plural form Examples: scissors mumps thanks trousers

Making Nouns Show Possession • Possessive Nouns show ownership • It shows possession of the noun that follows Examples: sister’s skates Sally’s mom

Making Singular Nouns Show Possession • Add an apostrophe and –s Examples: mechanic---mechanic’s James---James’s or James’

Making Plural Nouns Show Possession • If a plural noun ends in “s”, add an apostrophe after the “s” • workers--workers’ rights • nurses---nurses’ coats

Making Plural Nouns Show Possession • If the plural noun does not end in “s”, add an apostrophe and –s men---men’s women—women’s children --- children’s
