PHOTOSYNTHESIS Photosynthesis is a process used by plants and other organisms to convert light energy into chemical energy that can later be released to fuel the organisms' activities (energy transformation). This chemical energy is stored in carbohydrate molecules, such as sugars, which are synthesized from carbon dioxide and water – hence the name photosynthesis, from the Greek φῶς, phōs, "light", and σύνθεσις, synthesis, "putting together". In most cases, oxygen is also released as a waste product. Most plants, most algae, and cyanobacteria perform photosynthesis; such organisms are called photoautotrophs. Photosynthesis is largely responsible for producing and maintaining the oxygen content of the Earth's atmosphere, and supplies all of the organic compounds and most of the energy necessary for life on Earth. Although photosynthesis is performed differently by different species, the process always begins when energy from light is absorbed by proteins called reaction centres that contain green chlorophyll pigments. In plants, these proteins are held inside organelles called chloroplasts, which are most abundant in leaf cells, while in bacteria they are embedded in the plasma membrane. In these light-dependent reactions, some energy is used to strip electrons from suitable substances, such as water, producing oxygen gas. The hydrogen freed by the splitting of water is used in the creation of two further compounds that serve as short-term stores of energy, enabling its transfer to drive other reactions: these compounds are reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the "energy currency" of cells. In plants, algae and cyanobacteria, long-term energy storage in the form of sugars is produced by a subsequent sequence of light-independent reactions called the Calvin cycle; some bacteria use different mechanisms, such as the reverse Krebs cycle, to achieve the same end. In the Calvin cycle, atmospheric carbon dioxide is incorporated into already existing organic carbon compounds, such as ribulose bisphosphate (RuBP). Using the ATP and NADPH produced by the light-dependent reactions, the resulting compounds are then reduced and removed to form further carbohydrates, such as glucose.

Revision at your fingertips -- we've come a long way from relying just on big heavy textbooks. Now all you need is a laptop, tablet or smartphone; and an Internet connection, of course. Find out how you can still do revision on the go.

SPM is just two weeks away…. You’re probably studying day and night till you eat, sleep and breathe mathematical formulas, science equations and historical facts. While you revise and build a steady momentum, do you sometimes feel as if you’re gripped by anxiety just because you can’t remember a fact or formula? The good news is that you no longer need to lug a sack of books with you everywhere you go for the next month.

If you need quick access to revision notes, practice questions or even a cyber lesson, try out these websites that can help you in your SPM revision.

1. SlideShare

SlideShare is a great way to review what you know. Presented in slides, this information are short, concise and sometimes includes attractive mind maps. Besides notes, you can also get tips on how to answer questions and practice questions.

If you haven’t tried Astro Tutor TV, now would be a good time to try it out. You don’t have to be in front of the TV to do your revision (but it’s on Channel 603 in case you’re home). Instead, you can get the mobile app on Google Play and the App Store .

There are notes, mind maps, quizzes and video tutorials. You can track your progress, and best of all, you can revise several topics in a single app. Got a question? You can key in your question and ask them here .

3. Pusat Rujukan Persuratan Melayu - Online dictionary

Whether you’re practising writing karangan or need a quick check in the dictionary while doing a BM paper, you can depend on Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka without having to heave a heavy Kamus Dewan with you. You can check out the meaning and usage of a word right here . Just key in a word in the search field – you will get its meaning in BM and English, and there’s also a thesaurus.

4. iTTV – Learn through videos

If you learn best by having a teacher explain a concept to you then you could try iTTV . Although iTTV requires a subscription in order for you to enjoy its full benefits, you can still access many useful videos on YouTube. Just key in ‘ ITTV SPM ’ in the search bar to see a full list of videos available or add other keywords like ‘ chemical bonds ’, ‘ elect '.

5. Various resources you need to check out

Here are some websites that provide resources like notes and past year papers for a range of subjects:

How to Effectively Prepare for SPM Biology?

I am currently preparing for my SPM exams and I could use some advice specifically for Biology. I want to make sure I’m studying efficiently and effectively. Can anyone share some strategies or study techniques that worked well for them?

I have been trying to cover all the chapters, but I am finding it challenging to retain all the information. Here are a few specific areas where I could use some help:

• Understanding Concepts: How do you ensure that you understand the core concepts rather than just memorizing facts?
• Answering Techniques: Are there any tips for answering structured and essay questions effectively? What do examiners usually look for in a good answer?
• Revision: What are the best ways to revise Biology? Are there any particular resources or revision books that you found helpful?
• Practice Papers: How often should I be doing practice papers, and how should I be using them to improve my performance?
