One-man show

Film: Pushpa The Rise Cast: Allu Arjun, Rashmik Mandanna, Sunil and Fahad Fasil Director: Sukumar Rating: 3

Pushpa Raj (Allu Arjun) is a coolie raised in the world of red sandalwood smuggling. His rags-to-riches story unfolds along both distinctive and predictable lines.

Review: First things first – It’s heartening to see ace director Sukumar moving away from contemporary urban plots and touching upon a burning issue –red sanders smuggling in the Seshachalam forest in Andhra Pradesh.

What’s even more welcome is that the director has designed a unique character for Allu Arjun. The actor’s rustic makeover as a daily labourer, a smuggler, and also a hunchback have made him stand out. However, what Sukumar delivers is a mixed bag. At times the film falters, but it does deliver what it promises.

The first half of the film that shows the protagonist’s rise from being the underdog to a position of power has been well shot. Allu Arjun’s dialogues, his fearless attitude and body language are near perfect. He aced the Chittoor slang too.

The director showcases the nitty gritty of red sanders smuggling, and the modus operandi.

Pushpa’s romance with Srivalli (Rashmika) is another layer in the plot. His ignorance of the art of flirting, the way he approaches Srivalli, and a few episodes in their romance evokes laughter. The interval episode where Pushpa challenges the villain (Sunil) is riveting.

But once the second half begins, most of the scenes are predictable. That’s where the film falters. We have seen several gangster-based films which show the rise of the underdog. So, the scenes where Pushpa bypasses villains and strikes a deal with others are not new.

Length-wise, the film isn’t the best. Samantha’s special song does not provide a high, and the Sami Sami song comes without context.

The altercation between Pushpa and Shekawat (Fahad Fasil) in the climax also lacks the required punch. In fact, it looks as if the filmmaker is leaving room for a second part.

Devi Sri Prasad’s music scores big and his background score elevates the intense scenes.

Performance wise, Allu Arjun breathes life into the character. He has evolved a lot as an actor and this is one of his career-best performances. Rashmika Mandanna is convincing as a village belle; she too pulled off her role well. While Sunil and other character actors were adequate, it’s the lag in the second half and the run time that become hurdles. Also, the second half is short of ‘defining’ moments, which could prove costly.

Overall, Pushpa The Rise , is a one-man show! It’s Allu Arjun all the way!

Pushpa: The Rise — Part 1 Movie Review: Allu Arjun is all swagger in a film that falters

Rating: ( 3 / 5).

Let it be said clearly and loudly that the foremost attraction in Pushpa: The Rise – Part 1 is the characterisation of the protagonist, Pushpa, and in equal parts, the performance of Allu Arjun that’s so casually charismatic. Come to think of it, it’s quite strange that we can’t keep our eyes off Pushparaj. The man has unkempt hair, a peculiar manner of walking with the shoulders rather lopsided, clothes that seem barely washed, and when this man does speak, he aims to sting. And yet, Allu Arjun has internalised this character and plays it with such effortless style that it’s impossible not to buy him, quirks and all. It’s strange that the man radiating this charm is a violent, selfish brute who believes in shortcuts. When he seeks to escape from the police, he bribes them. When he seeks a woman, well, he bribes her.

Director Sukumar tries to make him accessible by showing him as an underdog at the very bottom of a vicious power hierarchy. He also, rather manipulatively, establishes that Pushpa is an illegitimate child, chiefly, it seems, to win our support. But he perhaps doesn’t realise that we are already invested in Pushpa, largely on account of terrific dialogues, delivered with the rough bite of the Chittoor dialect. Watch when he willingly participates in a dangerous mission, and someone warns him that there’s a good chance he may not return home that evening. Pushpa climbs into the truck, but not before saying, “I have no plans for the evening anyway.” It’s to Sukumar’s credit that this character never strays from this casual arrogance that defines him.

Director: Sukumar

Cast: Allu Arjun, Fahadh Faasil, Sunil, Rao Ramesh, Rashmika

Also to Sukumar’s credit is how he manages to pull off the unenviable job of making a rather dry subject—red sanders-smuggling—so entertaining in unexpected ways. Who would have thought that the visual of tree logs floating by in a river would result in such entertainment? A vast part of this film’s enjoyment is contained in the pre-interval portions when the filmmaker, whilst ensuring every scene explodes with wit and humour, introduces us to the power hierarchy and the impossibility of rising in such a rigged system. In Wasseypur -esque fashion, we also see that there are barely any decent men in this universe (a police inspector is an exception). Unlike in the Kashyap films though, there’s just a single protagonist here and played by a celebrated star to boot. I felt the uncomfortable dissonance of watching a murderous smuggler being presented as a mass hero worthy of adulation. Sure, he’s comparatively kind to women (and that’s barely saying anything), but does it necessarily make him worthy of cinematic adoration? Does the film love him because he’s so full of smarts? Perhaps it’s because he’s fearless? Or maybe on account of his unquenchable thirst for power, which Srivalli (Rashmika) bemoans? What does it say of this film that across its indulgent three-hour runtime, there’s no real exploration of this man’s flaws, of his emotionally stunted nature, which Srivalli assumes the best of?

The women are largely bystanders and victims, and while that might well be a commentary of the oppressive world around them, some of the film’s choices show that its view isn’t perhaps so well-intended. The big item song, ‘ Ooh antaava ’, is hardly the subversion many imagined it to be. The lyrics pretend to attack, but the song, the video, the situation… it all aims to please. Srivalli, meanwhile, is defined by the speed at which her saree falls off, each time she comes into focus. There’s a late half-hearted attempt in the film to force some agency into Srivalli’s character, but the weak monologue from her only seems like a crafty excuse. Pushpa meanwhile revels in his celebration of masculinity by rescuing her, and Srivalli responds by worshipping the sand that he walks on, whilst calling him ‘ Saami ’. There’s a scene in which a tearful Srivalli readies herself for incoming exploitation by taking bath and dressing up. On some level, it only ends up seeming like a metaphor for roles like this.

Many of these issues raise their ugly head after the interval, with the story losing its sense of direction, as it hurtles into a bizarre end featuring Fahadh Faasil who comes in from nowhere. The subplots stand unresolved, the high of Pushpa’s rise has already been forgotten, and yet, this film goes on and on, like a derailed train that’s a danger to both itself and everyone else. Even if films are part of a bigger whole, standalone films must still have their unique resolutions and exist as artwork with their own organic end. This film itself seems to recognise that it’s barely complete and dubs its end a ‘second interval’—which feels like a misstep at best and an insult at worst.

And yet, let it be said loudly and clearly that Pushpa isn’t a bad film or even a lazy film for that matter. You can see evidence of this largely in—allow me to re-emphasise this—its terrific dialogues. One pre-interval scene comes to mind. Pushpa has just soundly defeated an adversary and the latter, like in many a film, reels off some parting dialogues, including the threat that life will come full circle and that he will eventually get his chance at revenge. Pushpa hears him out patiently, and finally says one line that decimates his opponent: “Every loser says something like this.” It’s impossible not to laugh out loud—and that’s another strength of this film: all the effortless humour. A terrific central performance from Allu Arjun and plenty of sharp dialogues, and yet, Pushpa: The Rise – Part 1 should have done better. It’s impossible to shake off the feeling that the promise was not quite realised in this film, and now, the question is, will the makers be allowed another stab at it with a follow-up film? For all its flaws, I do think director Sukumar, on evidence of some inspired filmmaking during the pre-interval portions, deserves a chance to complete his vision. Perhaps that way, we might find some fulfillment too.

What’s it about?

The 1990s. The film begins with a coolie named Pushpa Raj transporting Red sandalwood, a valued wood. His friend Keshava narrates Pushpa Raj’s rise from a coolie to a don.

Pushpa Raj (Allu Arjun), born out of wedlock, is seething with rage as people humiliate him for not having a surname. Naturally, his urge to earn big money and name becomes his ultimate goal. Where does he live? In a forest, where red sanders are smuggled. So, joining this business is a natural choice for him. As his nature, he is not satisfied with the small successes in the business. He wants to become a don. How does he achieve this is the main story.

Moving away from contemporary urban stories, director Sukumar reinvented himself with ‘Rangasthalam’, by delving into rural themes and period dramas. The film’s massive commercial success inspired him to tread the same path. His latest film ‘Pushpa The Rise’, the first in the two-part drama, is set in Seshachalam forest in Andhra Pradesh, where the smuggling of red sanders is prevalent. While ‘Rangasthalam’ was set in the 1980s, ‘Pushpa The Rise’ has the 1990s as the period.

Sukumar has a unique style of writing interesting characters. Pushpa Raj’s characterization is one such. The characterization has a lot of depth. He is Pushpa Raj but prefers to be called Pushpa. The humiliation he faces for his birth is what drives him to be a king of his place. The protagonist is not a typical hero. He is an illegitimate child, a smuggler, and he is a person with a slight hunchback. None of these characteristics are associated with a regular commercial hero in movies. Sukumar has dared to add them. He has also set the story in the Seshachalam forest and takes us into the deep forest with his narrative.

Sukumar begins the film with a bang. The first half of the film is quite engaging. All the introduction of characters, Pushpa Raj’s playfulness, and couple of comedy scenes hold our interest. One of the best scenes in the first half is Pushpa Raj’s rage when he was humiliated at the Pelli Choopulu scene. Another interesting scene: Pushpa Raj stepping into the house of the main villain (played by Sunil) and challenging him.

But once everything is established, it fizzles. Because Sukumar has tried to play the same elements in the second half as well. It turns out to be the rise of the underdog, a regular formula.

The biggest trump card he has in the film is Allu Arjun’s characterization. Allu Arjun has also owned the role and has given the best performance. But other than Allu Arjun’s role, other characters don’t have the same arc. Sunil, Ajay Ghosh, Anasuya, Shatru, Rao Ramesh, and Dhananjay have a predictable character arc.

Each of the characters sports a different getup. But the depth in their roles is superficial.

The first half of ‘Pushpa’ has similarities with the Netflix series, Narcos. Many scenes are inspired by it, and that is where the story holds our interest. But the second half goes on and on with no strong conflict. The twist comes minutes before the arrival of Fahadh Faasil. He is the nemesis for Pushpa Raj.

The other mistake is that the film begins with the voiceover of Pushpa Raj’s friend Keshava. But the voiceover ends much before the climax. Some roles may get their due in the second part of the film, but they don’t make much impact here. The runtime is an inexcusable flaw. With a template story, it is three hours long. Plus, had the film made as one part, it would have been different.

The biggest strength of the film is Allu Arjun. His performance is brilliant. He has completely surrendered himself to the role and played with conviction. There is little doubt that the film rates as his best performance in his whole career thus far, and his acting will be discussed in the following days and may win accolades and awards. His Chittoor dialogue delivery needs applause. Fahadh Faasil leaves a strong impression with just 15 minutes of his presence. He may get a full-length role in the second part.

Rashmika Mandanna has played her role well. Her Chittoor slang is also believable. But scenes like she agreeing to kiss to hero for Rs 5000 are not in good taste at all. The rest of the actors don’t make much impression.

Devi Sri Prasad has given another terrific album. All his songs have become popular. “Saami Saami” and “Hey Bidda” stand out. But the background score is not up to the mark. The cinematography is also superlative. But tacky visual effects and jarring sound mixing are glaringly visible.

Bottom-line:  ‘Pushpa The Rise’ is completely Allu Arjun’s show. His performance is his main strength. The ‘fire’ is missing in the latter part of the film, and the lengthy runtime is a major issue.

Pushpa: The Rise Movie Review: The Film Does More For Its Sequel Pushpa: The Rule Than Itself

Director: Sukumar Cast: Allu Arjun, Rashmika Mandanna, Fahadh Faasil, Suneel, Anasuya Bharadwaj, Ajay Ghosh, Dhananjaya, Shatru Language : Telugu

First, director Sukumar was conspicuously missing from the promotions. They said he was busy with the film's post-production work. No one knew whether it was last minute hustle or a filmmaker painstakingly sculpting his magnum opus frame by frame. Then, there is Allu Arjun who's been on the verge of breaking into the topmost tier of stardom. Yes, he's already a big star, but not yet the unquestioned superstar he is capable of becoming — one whose success or failures do nothing to dent the stardom.

There is also the issue regarding Devi Sri Prasad's music, which hasn't seen big highs in a long time, given he reserves his best for Sukumar — case in point Rangasthalam . And finally, the decision to break the film into two parts after announcing it as a single film has been most curious. Would the film have enough meat for two parts or was it trying to cash in on the success formula of KGF and Baahubali ? Given how much buzz there is around the production and release of the film, it is almost impossible to see it as an independent work of art alone. But one must try.

Pushpa tells the story of a coolie Pushparaaj who is denied a surname because of his bastard status. He is constantly disrespected by his 'brothers' and the society around him in Chittoor District. But Pushpa has a super-power to smuggle red sanders which earns him a place in the good books of a local smuggler. Pushpa: The Rise, like a diligent biopic, chronicles the rise of its eponymous hero to the top of the pyramid… until something happens, but I'm getting ahead of myself.

The comparisons to Sukumar's previous work Rangasthalam are easy to make because these are both rural dramas and both have themes of upper-caste men abusing their power. And the music and songs have parallels too. Sukumar has a habit of correcting one film's mistakes in the next one. Whether they were the screenplay loopholes in 1 Nenokkaidine that made way for a more straightforward screenplay in Nannaku Prematho or the 'psychopathic' nature of Aarya in Aarya 2 being replaced with a more palatable egotist in 100% Love 's Balu.

Pushpa, however, borrows from Sukumar's first mis-hit Jagadam. There too a young man rises up the ranks in the criminal world at great personal cost. That film, while labelled 'ahead of its time,' suffered from an inability to stay focused on its character. In Pushpa , Sukumar corrects that mistake and delivers some stunning set pieces. The sequence where Pushpa saves the day when it looks like the smugglers are done for is a stellar example. The interval sequence sets the screen on fire.

Much of the credit should go to Allu Arjun. If in Ala Vaikuntapurramloo he deliberately played to the gallery, in Pushpa , he earns more whistles as Pushparaaj than as Allu Arjun. He pulls off the costumes, makeup and accent with ease. It is a breath of fresh air to see Allu Arjun, the actor, on screen. In fact, look at his face when he begins to discover his true worth before he proceeds to confront Mangalam Sreenu (Sunil). Allu Arjun effortlessly embodies a little bit of feeling wronged — or as Pushpa would say not being a 'partner'— a little bit of ambition, and a whole lot of anger. But he gets this right without playing to the gallery.

But barring a few such sequences the film struggles to justify its length — it feels too long for one film, I can't imagine why we need a second part. I understand the temptation to create an epic saga like Nayakan did for Velu Naicker or Narcos for Pablo Escobar but do we need the boilerplate romance portions? These might have been fresh in another film, but in Pushpa , they are a drag. Even when Sukumar tries to involve her in the plot, it feels forced. Although Rashmika does her best to imbue bubbliness and the innocence required in these testosterone-charged surroundings, her brown-facing is unnecessary and ineffective.

The red sanders, which has driven the people mad after power, gives Pushpa a sense of identity and respect. But the story settles for using it as a mere theme to stack set pieces on, instead of exploring what Pushpa might be willing to sacrifice for it. The music is uneven. It adds precious little to take the proceedings on the screen to mass levels. Sunil, Ajay Ghosh, Anasuya, Shatru, Dhanunjay needed a little more bite to them; they almost always seem tepid compared to Pushpa.

And then, there's the matter of Fahadh Faasil. The film takes its own sweet time to get him involved – like a video game where the final boss comes. Worse, it is awkward to see him play Bhanwar Singh Sikhawat because his Malayalam-tainted Telugu eats away at the ferocity the background music hints at. The climax, though, risky and non-mainstream, begs for better.

The most unsatisfying thing about Pushpa is that it only tells half of the story. While Baahubali: The Beginning left us with one big question (Why did Kattappa kill Baahubali?), it also gave us a complete story. Even the ill-fated NTR biopic Kathanayakudu gave us a clear distinction of the man's life and it was easy to judge the first part.

But Pushpa is merely a series of slowly built setups rather than one complete story so it feels more like I'm writing this review during an inordinately long interval.

‘Pushpa - The Rise’ movie review: But for a few sparkling moments

The first edition of the two-part gangster drama is a mixed bag, despite a few riveting segments. allu arjun is impressive, but did an over-the-top and caricaturish opponent require a fahadh faasil.

Sangeetha Devi Dundoo

Actor Allu Arjun in a still from the film Pushpa

An hour into director B Sukumar’s Telugu film Pushpa - The Rise , set in the Seshachalam forest bordering Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, a character makes a frenzied announcement to Pushparaj (Allu Arjun) that the cops are on their trail, with their eyes on the red sandalwood stocked in the godown. What follows in the next few minutes shows yet again why Telugu filmmakers excel in making masala segments that capture viewers’ imagination. How Pushpa hoodwinks the cops and secures the red sandalwood might seem tough in reality, but a larger-than-life Telugu film will make the audiences give into that suspension of disbelief.

  • Cast: Allu Arjun, Rashmika Mandanna, Fahadh Faasil
  • Direction: B Sukumar
  • Music: Devi Sri Prasad

After Rangasthalam , Sukumar presents another story in a raw and rustic tone, this time in the Chittoor belt, complete with a smattering of Tamil lingo. The cat and mouse game between the cops and the smugglers in the opening segment serves to show what makes Pushpa stand out from others of his ilk. We see him through the eyes of daily wager Kesava (Jagadeesh Prathap Bandari makes a mark) who goes on to be his loyal apprentice. It’s a sort of a ‘meeting story’ when we are introduced to Pushpa’s audacity to want a lot more than the pittance that the coolies are doled out.

The origin story unravels in greater detail by and by and often harks back to Pushpa being questioned about his family name. It’s a trope that several mainstream films have overused, particularly with a wayward protagonist. Pushpa’s only vulnerability is when someone mocks him of his origins.

Sukumar gives Pushpa a characteristic gait with a raised right shoulder and an ever-present swagger, but never actually makes him vulnerable. Not even when he is taking on supposedly ruthless kingpins at every step of the smuggling syndicate. The three smuggler brothers hardly pose a threat to Pushpa. Mangalam Sreenu (Sunil) appears menacing on a comparative scale. The supposedly brave cop Govindappa (Shatru) is forgotten soon enough and gets a blink-and-miss appearance towards the end. The lack of a staunch opponent makes Pushpa’s rise fairly simple.

What makes Pushpa so ruthless and ambitious? We will never know. The story wants us to be content with the argument that he has never gotten his due since childhood, neither in terms of money nor dignity, and now he wants it all. He knows a thing or two about the predator-prey cycle (the ‘ Daakko Daakko Meka’ song is a catchy, rousing number on screen) and wants to be on top of it. Can he?

Despite the want of more depth in the characterisation, Allu Arjun makes Pushparaj striking. He owns the swagger and is in control of things. He exudes the shrewdness required for his part and brings in restraint in the emotional portions.

Much of Pushpa happens in the forest and the atmospherics add to the immersive quality of the film. Mirosław Kuba Brożek’s camera pulls us into the wilderness, bringing alive the interplay of deep greens and stark browns of the land and its people, contrasted by the sparkling waters. Devi Sri Prasad’s music and background score accentuate the rustic setting.

Pushpa begins as an absorbing tale before it meanders with a silly romance track and crawls post intermission to an underwhelming finish. The less said about the characterisation of women in this film, the better. As Srivalli, Rashmika is required to exude rustic exuberance and nothing more. And who thought it is humorous to have the hero ask the woman to kiss him for ₹5000? Later, Srivalli tells him that she still fell in love with him and thought his actions stemmed from the fact that he did not know better. For a moment, I had hoped this scene was going to set things right, but what she said soon after dashed all hopes.

The much-hyped special song featuring Samantha Ruth Prabhu elicits the expected response in the theatre but you can’t help wondering if someone of her stature and calibre needed to do this. Isn’t it high time item numbers are done away with?

The women in this film range from a weepy, good mother at one end to a paan -chewing, venom-spewing bejewelled wife (Anasuya Bharadwaj) of a smuggler at the other end, both cliches. After Rangamma in Rangasthalam, Anasuya deserved better.

But the biggest disappointment is Fahadh Faasil. The second part will see a lot more of him, but the little we get of him in this film is a dampener. You don’t need a Fahadh Faasil for an over the top opponent.

Pushpa - The Rise is riveting in some segments and bland in others. Allu Arjun shoulders the film, but his coming together with Sukumar should have been for a more absorbing narrative. Perhaps the second part, Pushpa - The Rule , will be better.

Pushpa Movie Review – Allu Arjun the only positive

Pushpa Movie

Pushpa Movie review

Telugu360 Rating  : 2.75/5

Pushparaju is a daily wage worker with the ambition and attitude to win big. Set in the forest backdrop of the Seshachalam forest, the film follows Pushpa’s rise from a coolie to that of a red sandalwood syndicate leader.

The film opens with a voice over describing the demand for red sandalwood in the international market, via graphics in an interesting reverse flow from the consumer in Japan to the Seshachalam forest from where it is smuggled via Chennai & China. Pushpa’s introduction as a coolie in the gang is rustic and seemingly authentic. Pushpa’s character is well established through the first half as a realistically greedy youth who aims to reach the next level of success with just his guts and foresight. The rustic Chittor Forest village set up, people and dialect are done effectively. For most part director Sukumar maintained the subtle narration without over-the-top heroism. However, it borders the line of a flat narrative. The lack of a proper villain does not help the movie either. Ajay Ghosh, Suneel and Rao Ramesh played villains and honestly there isn’t much conflict here to generate rugged action scenes of any sort. Heroine Raskmika’s characterization as a routine village girl in a deglamorized role has nothing to talk about.

Given the smuggling background and hype built around the extravagant budget, any audience expecting action episode will be surely disappointed. The red sandalwood syndicate has Suneel as its lead – a poor casting choice, the Reddy brothers – nothing to offer in terms of villainy. Samantha’s item song is a commercial add on.

Songs Dakko Dakko Meka, Chupe Bangaramaayene , Oo Antava songs are in first half, superhit audio Saamy song is into second half.

Second half shows Pushpa try to win his lady love, his humiliation around the circumstances of his birth, minister’s attempt to deescalate the rift within the smuggling syndicate. As expected, Pushpa becomes the smuggling syndicate kingpin. When all seems well for Pushpa both professionally and romantically, Sukumar introduces Shekawat (Fahaad Faazil) as a new police office and gives the audience 30 minutes of filler scenes ending with Pushpa preaching to Shekawat.

Sukumar’s mark direction is a clear miss, with exception to adhering to the rustic backdrop. Cinematography is good enough, but the major disappointment is DSP’s background score and the very bad sound design. Perhaps audiography team did not have time to complete the rerecording work. Most of the film appears to have leveraged Spot Dubbing technique. Visual effects are not up to the mark either.

Allu Arjun as Pushpa has put in his best efforts and acted superb. His body language, performance, and diction (complete Chittor dialect) are excellent. He will be appreciated by one and all and is the only saving grace in the movie. His friend keshava role is good as well. Rest of the cast has nothing much to get appreciation.

Positives :

• Allu Arjun’s fantastic performance • Two Songs ( Saamy , Oo Antava ) • Authentic rustic, rural setup

Negatives :

• Slow narration in the first half • Horrible technical values mainly audiography , Visual Effects • Poor casting of villains and lack of strong conflict points • Missing Sukumar’s magic • Unnecessary dragging scenes of 2nd half including the climax

‘Pushpa’ doesn’t live up to the expectations. The story of a Sandalwood smuggler who grows from a ‘Coolie’ to ‘Syndicate Boss’ has been narrated in a flat manner. Allu Arjun characterization, dialogues stand out. Second half is a BIG letdown and audience may keep wondering what the purpose of the last 30 minutes and the climax episode was. As you walk out, you can’t help but think if part 2 will ever be made.

Pushpa Movie Review: Only Color No Fragrance

Pushpa Movie Review: Only Color No Fragrance

Movie: Pushpa Rating: 2.5/5 Banner: Mythri Movie Makers Cast:  Allu Arjun, Rashmika Mandanna, Fahadh Faasil, Sunil, Anasuya, Rao Ramesh, Dhanunjay, Ajay, Ajay Ghosh and others Music: Devi Sri Prasad Cinematography: Miroslaw Kuba Brozek Editor: Karthika Srinivas, Ruben Art: Ramakrishna-Monika Producer: Naveen Yerneni, Y Ravi Shankar Written and directed by: Sukumar Release Date: Dec 17, 2021

Allu Arjun and director Sukumar’s “Pushpa” has been creating waves ever since the first look of the film was released. The pan-Indian film is out in theaters today amidst high expectations and frenzy.

Let’s analyze.

Story: Pushpa Raj (Pushpa) has no surname. He lives in the Seshachalam forest in Andhra Pradesh. He begins as a coolie of Red sandalwood smuggling and wins the confidence of the syndicate headed by the Kondareddy brothers (Ajay Ghosh and others).

The main boss of the syndicate is Mangalam Seenu (Sunil), who is making crores of rupees by transporting the wood to Chennai and giving peanuts to Kondareddy and other syndicate members. Pushpa throws a challenge to Mangalam Seenu and becomes a new don.

When everyone thinks that he is the new ‘boss’' of the smuggling business, police officer Shekhawat (Fahadh Faasil) enters the scene.

Artistes’ Performances: Allu Arjun has given an exceptional performance as Pushpa Raj. His transformation of the physique is perfect. His dialogue delivery with Chittoor dialect is spot on. From the beginning to end, the film is his show all the way. The performance will be one of the best in his career.

Among other actors (there are plenty of characters), none leave any impression.

Rashmika Mandanna as the village belle gets her accent right and is sincere in her effort. But her role is predictable to the core. The romantic scenes between them have generated some laughs, but they are too clichéd.

Sunil as the villain gets a terrific makeover, but his role is also not at all effective. Anasuya’s presence doesn’t make any difference. The guy who played Keshava is okay. So are Ajay Ghosh and Kannada star Dhanunjay. Samantha sizzles in the item song but the song is short.

Fahadh Faasil, one of the best star actors working today in India, makes a late entry into the picture. He makes his presence felt.

Technical Excellence: Cinematography and production values stand out in this film. Miroslaw Kuba Brozek’s camerawork is excellent. He captured the forest sequences so well. He also shot some action episodes aesthetically. The film has rich production values throughout.

Devi Sri Prasad has given viral songs, but he disappoints us with background score. There seems to be some problem with audio quality. Dialogues in Chittoor slang are good.

Highlights: Allu Arjun’s terrific performance

Drawback: Sluggish narration Lack of strong villain(s) Background score Climax

Analysis After delivering a blockbuster like ‘Rangasthalam’, director Sukumar has once again selected a backdrop, which was not explored much on screen. The smuggling of Red sandalwood is a major issue in Chittoor. But not many films were made on this backdrop in Telugu. Sukumar has focused on this backdrop in “Pushpa” by creating the protagonist as a coolie in this smuggling business.

He has chosen a backdrop of Seshachalam forest to tell the story of a coolie’s rise in the smuggling business and created a world with peculiar characters, but the graph is pretty familiar.

If we observe the screenplay, director Sukumar is not in the best form here. In the beginning, we see the fight between Pushpa and a police officer. The task police officer expectedly fails and leaves the place. Then, we see a lot of build-up for Sunil and Ajay Ghosh’s characters. But they turn out to be weak villains. All the rivals for Pushpa – a task police officer, Sunil, Ajay Ghosh, and Dhananjay, appear to fill the drama till he comes face to face with his nemesis IPS officer Shekhawat (Fahadh Faasil).

Shekhawat comes into the picture 20 minutes before the climax. So, the entire film looks like preparing the ground for the second part. Perhaps, the decision to split the story into two parts and extend the movie to nearly 3-hour long is not a wise choice.

The pre-interval sequence of the hero’s smartness in the smuggling business is one of the main highlights. Similarly, we see a long episode before the ‘Hey Bidda’ song, which is riveting. Fahadh's humiliating Allu Arjun is also a mark of Sukumar’s direction.

Despite these moments, the film doesn’t engage much in the second half. The songs by Devi Sri Prasad are huge hits. But they lack the same impact on screen. The much-hyped item song also comes in the first half and quickly goes out.

All in all, “Pushpa” belongs entirely to Allu Arjun and his commendable performance. Director Sukumar has shown his mark at many places, but he has not woven it in a watertight manner, making it a pretty predictable rise of a don’s story.

Bottom-line: Needed More Fire

Pushpa: The Rise movie review – Allu Arjun is perfect in a film that is too long for its own good

Pushpa: The Rise movie review – Sukumar and Allu Arjun film promise craft and thought

Pushpa: The Rise movie review – Allu Arjun is perfect in a film that is too long for its own good

Language: Telugu

Sukumar’s  Pushpa: The Rise , the first installment of a two-parter, begins in Japan. A well-made animation clearly and succinctly informs the viewer about the film. The macro—why red sandalwood is worth killing/dying for—and the micro—the man at the middle—are swiftly established. Even in a short period, Sukumar promises craft and thought . Keshava’s voiceover takes us further into the world of Seshachalam. But who is Keshava narrating the story to? And why would a film that is, anyway, going to drown itself in DSP’s BGM need Resul Pookutty to design its sound? Apart from the chirps of a bird and the little jingle of a stray anklet, I don’t remember much. That’s my problem with  Pushpa: The Rise . The film that could’ve been.

Pushpa Raj, the titular character, is an illegitimate child of a dead man whose sons would do anything to disown/disrespect him and his mother. This is his only weakness and he is always at the edge of breaking when his linage is under question. What happens when this otherwise perfect human being decides to take over the illegal smuggling of red sandalwood in Seshachalam hills (apparently the only place on earth where this wood is available)?

Sukumar has a vision for who Pushpa is, both the character and the film.

With Pushpa Raj, it all comes down to respect: for him, his mother, and, most importantly, his birth. The scenes that establish this aspect of his character are wonderfully written. The call-back to Sunil’s technique shows that Pushpa is learning on the job and he is one quick learner. But since Sukumar writes Pushpa as a masala hero, he isn’t given the luxury of a fall. He’s never known a danger that he can’t fight his way out of—he goes through a whole fight sequence with a t-shirt covering his face. I understand the temptation to create a superhuman hero. A hero who can hurt someone in creative ways gets whistles. But three hours is a long time and claps and whistles can only take you so far.

With the film, Sukumar mostly struggles to wriggle out of the limitations he’s created for himself. In any tale of rags to riches, the protagonist slowly climbs the proverbial ladder by using the skills at their disposal. For the highs to be enthralling, the lows need to be equally soul-crushing. Maybe, the second part is going to be all about the lows, but as a standalone entity, this film needed to go through something to avoid monotony. As far as filmmaking goes, it never takes the star worship as an excuse to take the viewer for granted. Miroslaw Brozek’s camera moves purposefully and, even within the visual grammar of a commercial film, it finds ways to impress. The vertical tracking shot that shows us the bark of a tree that is about to be cut is particularly rememberable. Antony L. Ruben and Karthika Srinivas’ editing, too, shines in unexpected places like the songs and well-choreographed action sequences. The VFX could’ve been much better, even if I’m going to give him the benefit of doubt.

But the show belongs to one man and one man only— Allu Arjun . He plays Pushpa with a notorious familiarity that sometimes escapes even the most seasoned of actors. From the minute he enters the screen by pushing some random policeman out of a lorry, he has your attention. Despite the flimsy and repetitive emotional core, we empathise with Pushpa’s pain because the actor playing him is fully convinced by it. From the way, he awkwardly keeps losing his slipper while swaying to  Srivalli ’s tune, to the way he asserts his self-respect when someone asks him to sit appropriately, he is perfect. Rashmika Mandanna, too, is impressive as Srivalli. Again, even if her motives aren’t clear in the writing, the actor manages to distract the viewer with her earnestness and innate sparkle. Jagadeesh Pratap, as Keshava, is great as the righthand man, who both initiates and helps sustain Pushpa’s rise to the top. Sunil and co, as the supporting cast—I say supporting because they don’t have the follow-through to be the central threat—are adequate.

It is too soon to say, but Fahadh Faasil’s psychotic SI needs work. Even if he is introduced as the perfect match for Pushpa, his power soon fizzles out to make way for Pushpa’s invincibility. That’s the problem with writing an infallible hero and his ‘ maha aakali’.  It gnaws at anything that threatens to take the attention away from him.

Pushpa says that he is a better man than Jolly Reddy, a serial rapist. But in the same sentence, he asks Srivalli to kiss him for 5000/-. ‘ Daako Daako Meka ’ discusses the film’s supposed philosophy: if you aren’t feasting, you are probably the feast. Very poignant, except Pushpa is written too powerful to ever be anybody’s food. ‘ O Antava Oo Antava ’ is supposed to be a scathing commentary on men, but I couldn’t hear anything over the cheers and hoots appreciating Samatha’s flexibility. Sukumar expects the viewer to have an immersive experience, but he also wants to randomly insert songs. You can’t have both.

Rating: 3/5

The film is running in theatres.

Pushpa the Rise is an awesome movie.

When the movie was released people said it wasn't good. I watched it and I found it so good. Idk why Telugu people aren't a fan of this movie.

Edit: I loved it more than Ranghastalam. Pushpa had more world building and more eccentric character.

Allu Arjun Reconfirms Pushpa 2 The Rule Release Date

By Devanshi Basu

Allu Arjun has officially set the record straight about the release of his much-anticipated film, Pushpa 2: The Rule . At a recent pre-release event for Maruthi Nagar Subramanyam, the Telugu superstar addressed swirling rumors. For a while now, several reports suggested a delay in the film’s release . Putting all speculation to rest, Arjun confirmed that Pushpa 2 will hit theatres on December 6, 2024 . This announcement has intensified the excitement among fans and film enthusiasts.

Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2 The Rule to clash with Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava

Addressing his fans, affectionately known as the Allu Army, the actor expressed his nervousness about discussing his films before their release. Per a recent report , he reassured them that Pushpa 2 is set to be a massive success. Allu Arjun encouraged his fans to embrace the film with the same enthusiasm and confidence that his character, Pushpa Raj, exhibits.

On stage, he reaffirmed his commitment to the film with the Telugu phrase “Assalu Thaggedhe Le.” It translates to “I won’t back down at all” in English. This catchphrase gained popularity from Pushpa: The Rise and continues to be a defining element of the character’s persona.

The release date for Pushpa 2: The Rule also marks a significant clash with another high-profile film, Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava. Scheduled for the same day, i.e., December 6, Chhaava tells the story of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Rashmika Mandanna, who stars alongside Allu Arjun, will play Yesubai, Sambhaji’s wife. While Chhaava is expected to make a big impact in Maharashtra, the battle at the box office will be intense.

As the release date approaches, the clash of Pushpa 2 with Chhaava is sure to intensify the excitement among moviegoers. With Allu Arjun’s confident declaration and Chhava’s promising trailer, it is gearing up to be a blockbuster clash at the box office.

But tacky visual effects and jarring sound mixing are glaringly visible. Bottom-line: 'Pushpa The Rise' is completely Allu Arjun's show. His performance is his main strength. The 'fire' is missing in the latter part of the film, and the lengthy runtime is a major issue. Rating: 2.75/5.

Worse, it is awkward to see him play Bhanwar Singh Sikhawat because his Malayalam-tainted Telugu eats away at the ferocity the background music hints at. 21. Pushpa the Rise is an awesome movie. : r/tollywood

Rangasthalam (the movie before Pushpa) was one of the best movies till date by Sukumar. Even today it holds up and I'm sure it will for a decade more. People expected something more than Rangasthalam from sukumar. Pushpa as itself is a decent film but it's nothing compared to Rangasthalam. Pushpa also had some pacing issues in the middle.
