Rounding Word Problems Worksheets

In these free math worksheets, students practice how to use rounding to estimate and check the answers to word problems.

How to use estimation or rounding? Estimation or rounding is a useful tool for checking answers because it allows you to quickly determine if an answer is reasonable or not.

Here are some steps you can follow to use estimation to check an answer: Step 1: Make sure you understand what you are being asked to find and what information you have been given. Step 2: Round any numbers given in the problem to the nearest whole number, or to the nearest ten, hundred, or thousand, depending on the level of accuracy needed. Step 3: Use mental math to perform calculations quickly. For example, if you need to add 23 and 45, round them both to 20 and 50 and add those instead. This will give you an estimate that is close to the actual answer. Step 4: Once you have an estimate, compare it to the actual answer you calculated. If the estimate is close to the actual answer, you can be confident that your calculation is correct. If the estimate is significantly different from the actual answer, you may need to review your work and make corrections.

By using estimation to check your answers, you can catch errors early and avoid making mistakes that could lead to incorrect results.

Rounding to the nearest 10 100 and 1000 at a glance

Rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000 is a form of approximating numbers, making numbers easier to read and work with. Calculations using rounding will lead to an estimated answer.

For example, to round a 4 digit number to the nearest thousand we can use a number line to see which thousand it is nearest to. Any number with a hundreds digit of 5 or more will round up to the next thousand and any number with a hundreds digit of 4 or less will round down to the previous thousand. 

We can also round numbers to the nearest whole number, a given number of decimal places or a given number of significant figures. 

Looking forward, students can then progress to additional number worksheets , for example a n equivalent fractions & ordering fractions worksheet or simplifying fractions worksheet .

Maths Resource Description

This Maths Teaching Resource is designed for Year 5 students to master the concept of rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000. The objectives of the lesson are twofold: firstly, to enable students to confidently round numbers to these specified place values, and secondly, to enhance their reasoning and problem-solving skills through practical questions. Rounding is explained as a process of simplifying numbers while keeping their value close to the original. It's particularly useful when estimating, when exact answers are not possible, or when simplification makes numbers easier to work with.

The lesson introduces a mnemonic to help students remember the rounding rule: "Five to nine – climb straight up the vine! Zero to four – slide back down to the floor!" This helps them determine when to round up or down. For example, with the number 234,506, students learn to round to 234,510 (nearest 10), 234,500 (nearest 100), and 235,000 (nearest 1,000), paying close attention to the place value they are rounding to. The resource also encourages students to discuss and explain their thought process, such as looking at the digit to the right of the one they're rounding to decide if it should be rounded up or down. The lesson culminates with practical exercises and problem-solving activities, where students apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios, thereby solidifying their understanding of rounding in a fun and interactive manner.

Rounding to the nearest 10 Worksheets

When you are rounding a number to the nearest 10, you are trying to find out which multiple of 10 your number is closest to.

The golden rule with rounding is that if a number is exactly halfway between two multiples of 10, you always round up.

How to round a number to the nearest 10

Look at the ones digit.

• if it is less than 5 then round the number down by changing the ones digit to zero;
• if it is 5 or more then round the number up by adding one on to the tens digit and changing the ones digit to zero.
• 37 rounds up to 40 because the ones digit is 7.
• 63 rounds down to 60 because the ones digit is 3.
• 145 rounds up to 150 because the ones digit is a 5.
