Format der Dissertation

Die Promotionsordnung macht keine Vorgaben das Layout der Arbeit betreffend (z.B. Schriftart, Schriftgröße etc.). Bitte orientieren Sie sich an den Vorgaben der jeweiligen Betreuer*innen und sprechen diese Frage mit ihm/ihr ab.

Kumulative Dissertation

Am Fachbereich 03 ist eine kumulative Dissertation grundsätzlich möglich, sofern diese einer monographischen Dissertation qualitativ gleichwertig ist. Eine kumulative Dissertation besteht aus einer Einleitung, mindestens drei Aufsätzen sowie einer Abschlussdiskussion. Dabei sind die folgenden Bedingungen einzuhalten:

1. Aufsätze

(1) Die kumulative Dissertation umfasst die Einreichung von mindestens drei thematisch eigenständigen, in Alleinautor*innenschaft verfassten Aufsätzen der/des Kandidat*in, die in wissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften mit Begutachtungsverfahren publiziert bzw. nachweislich zur Begutachtung eingereicht worden sind. Die Aufsätze müssen in einem engen fachlichen Zusammenhang zu den Gebieten der Soziologie, der Politikwissenschaft oder der Didaktik der Sozialwissenschaften stehen und durch eine übergeordnete Fragestellung verbunden sein, die durch das Thema der Dissertation ausgewiesen ist.

(2) Mindestens zwei der Aufsätze müssen in wissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften mit Begutachtungsverfahren zur Publikation angenommen sein, die zum Zeitpunkt des Einreichens im Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) gelistet waren.  Bei Aufsätzen, die bei Einreichung der Dissertationsschrift noch nicht im Druck bzw. online erschienen sind, ist die entsprechende Annahmebestätigung der jeweiligen Zeitschrift vorzulegen.

Zusätzlich zu diesen beiden Publikationen in SSCI-gelisteten Zeitschriften kann mindestens ein weiterer Aufsatz auch bei einer nicht SSCI-gelisteten Zeitschrift zur Begutachtung eingereicht sein.

(3) Mindestens einer der Aufsätze muss in Alleinautor*innenschaft verfasst sein. Für Aufsätze in Koautor*innenschaft gilt, dass jeweils einer der als Mindestzahl geforderten drei Aufsätze in Alleinautor*innenschaft durch zwei nach den Regeln aus Abs. 1 und Abs. 2 äquivalente Aufsätze ersetzt werden kann, an welchen die/der Kandidat*in in Koautor*innenschaft maßgeblich mitgewirkt hat. Koautor*innen von Publikationen, die für die kumulative Dissertation vorgelegt werden, können nicht als Gutachter*innen der Dissertation auftreten. Die weiteren Regeln aus Abs. 1 und Abs. 2 gelten entsprechend.

Bei Publikationen in Koautor*innenschaft ist von der/dem Kandidat*in zusätzlich der jeweilige Eigenanteil in Bezug auf Inhalt und Umfang schriftlich darzulegen.

2. Einleitung und Abschlussdiskussion

Die kumulative Dissertation umfasst zusätzlich zu den Aufsätzen eine Einleitung und eine Abschlussdiskussion. Darin stellt die/der Kandidat*in den inhaltlichen Zusammenhang der vorgelegten Aufsätze im Rahmen einer übergeordneten Fragestellung dar und macht deutlich, welche Aspekte der übergeordneten Fragestellung durch die einzelnen Manuskripte jeweils abgedeckt werden.

Die Abschlussdiskussion soll die Einzelergebnisse der Aufsätze zusammenführen. Die/der Kandidat*in muss darstellen, was die Aufsätze zur Beantwortung der Fragestellung der Dissertation beitragen und die Arbeit in einen größeren fachwissenschaftlichen Kontext einbetten. In diesem Teil soll ebenfalls die theoretische bzw. methodologische Reflexion des eigenen wissenschaftlichen Vorgehens geleistet sowie eine zusammenfassende Darstellung und Bewertung der inhaltlichen Ergebnisse gegeben werden.

Um eine substanzielle Diskussion und Darstellung der Ergebnisse der Forschung zu gewährleisten, müssen Einleitung und Abschlussdiskussion einen Gesamtumfang von mindestens 90.000 Zeichen (inklusive Leerzeichen) aufweisen.

You have several possibilities to publish your dissertation: Your faculty may have further requirements. Please note the regulations of the departments

• Text part as 1 PDF/A document, for multi-volume works 1 PDF/A document per volume. The abstract (preferably German and English) may contain a maximum of 5000 characters; this will be entered into the form on the university publication server during the upload process. It is not necessary to submit it as a separate file.
• The file names of the PDF/A or PDF documents must not contain any umlauts, special characters or spaces. The file name is displayed in the university publication server; it is no longer possible to change the file name once the document has been published.
• PDF/A or PDF documents must not have any security settings (password protection). This is of the utmost importance for long-term archiving.
• JPG bzw. JPEG

Monographie und kumulative Dissertation: Unterschied

Ein einzelner, Hunderte Seiten starker Text, in dem jahrelange Arbeit steckt – so stellen sich die meisten Menschen eine Doktorarbeit vor. Diese sogenannte Monographie ist auch die häufigste Form der Dissertation, sowohl bei der strukturierten Promotion als auch bei der Individualpromotion .

Doch es geht auch anders: In vielen Fachbereichen, vor allem in den Naturwissenschaften, können alternativ einzelne, meist in Fachzeitschriften veröffentlichte Artikel zusammengefasst und eingereicht werden. Was ist eine Monographie: Definition

Der Begriff Monographie leitet sich vom griechischen „monos“ (alleine, einer) und „graphein“ (schreiben) ab. „Einzelschrift“ heißt aber nicht, dass das Werk nur von einem einzigen Autoren stammen darf – es können auch mehrere Autoren zusammenarbeiten –, sondern dass hier nur ein einziges, streng umrissenes Thema von allen Seiten erschöpfend und kritisch beleuchtet wird. Vor allem in den Geisteswissenschaften sind Monographien die übliche Variante. 

Für den Umfang einer Monographie gibt es regulär keine Vorgaben. Der Aufbau ist aber in der Regel standardisiert, es gibt

• eine Einleitung,
• einen Hauptteil mit Methoden- und Diskussionskapiteln sowie
• eine Reflexion oder ein Fazit. 

Zusammenarbeit von zwei oder mehr Autor:innen

Arbeiten mehrere Autor:innen zusammen, gilt das Werk nur dann als Monographie, wenn die Texte gemeinsam verfasst werden . Achtung: Wer eine Monographie zusammen mit einem oder mehreren Ko-Autor:innen schreibt, muss exakt benennen, welche Passagen und Erkenntnisse von ihm oder ihr stammen . Die Promotionsordnung gibt Aufschluss, wie das zu geschehen hat, wie viele oder welche Ko-Autor:innen zulässig sind und wie hoch der Eigenanteil sein muss.

Kumulative Dissertation: Wie funktioniert die Promotion auf Raten?

In einigen Fachbereichen, vor allem in der empirischen Forschung, bietet es sich an, die Forschungsergebnisse nicht als Gesamtwerk, sondern in Teilergebnissen zu veröffentlichen – beispielsweise dann, wenn diese Ergebnisse bis zum Erscheinen der Monographie bereits veraltet wären oder wenn verschiedene Methoden („mixed mode“) angewandt werden. 

Unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen können diese einzelnen Fachartikel kumuliert (lateinisch cumulare: an- oder aufhäufen) und von Einleitung, Überleitungen und Fazit umrahmt als Dissertationsschrift eingereicht werden. 

Ob eine solche Sammeldissertation möglich ist, schreibt die Promotionsordnung vor, ebenso nennt sie die weiteren Bedingungen. Festgelegt ist hier beispielsweise:

• wie viele Artikel publiziert werden müssen – in der Regel je nach Fachbereich zwei bis sechs
• ob die Paper bereits veröffentlicht sein müssen oder ob es genügt, wenn sie angenommen wurden oder sich zumindest im Prüfverfahren befinden
• wo sie veröffentlicht oder angenommen sein müssen – in der Regel muss es sich um renommierte Fachzeitschriften handeln 
• ob Ko-Autoren zugelassen sind und wenn ja, welche und wie viele: Dürfen auch Betreuer Ko-Autoren sein? Dürfen sie dann noch betreuen? Wie hoch muss der Eigenanteil sein? 
• wie lang die Artikel sein müssen
• wie die Dissertation aus den einzelnen Artikeln formal gestaltet werden muss. 

Wie bei einer Monographie muss auch hier eine Promotionsprüfung abgelegt werden. Der dann verliehene Doktortitel ist gleichwertig .

Was sind die Vorteile einer kumulativen Dissertation?

Eine kumulative Dissertation oder Publikationspromotion bietet gegenüber einer monographischen mehrere Vorteile. So verteilt sich die Schreibarbeit der Promotion auf mehrere kleine Projekte statt auf ein großes . Dies kann grundsätzlich zur Motivation beitragen und eine Erleichterung sein, wenn aufgrund anderer Verpflichtungen eine längerfristige, dauerhafte Arbeit an der Dissertation nur schwer möglich ist. 

Zudem erreichen Artikel in einem angesehenen Journal schneller ein wesentlich größeres Fachpublikum als eine Monografphe – das fördert die Sichtbarkeit und Reputation des Promovenden und kann der akademischen Karriere einen entscheidenden Schub bringen. 

Ein weiterer Pluspunkt der kumulativen Dissertation: Bei interdisziplinär angelegten Arbeiten kann in Journalen verschiedener Fachrichtungen publiziert werden. Dies kann von Vorteil sein, wenn der oder die Promotionsbetreuende nicht in allen Teilgebieten Experte ist: Die Prüfenden der Fachzeitschriften haben die nötige Expertise. Es sollte aber mit dem oder der Promotionsbetreuenden vorher abgesprochen werden, ob dies den Regularien der Fakultät entspricht und ob die einzelnen Paper formal einander angeglichen werden müssen oder im Original – wie veröffentlicht bzw. angenommen – in die Dissertation aufgenommen werden können.

Kann eine kumulative Dissertation auch Nachteile haben?

Ein paar Artikel veröffentlichen und fertig ist die Dissertation? So einfach ist es nicht. Im Gegenteil: Um als Teile einer Dissertationsschrift anerkannt zu werden, müssen die Paper in der Regel von renommierten, international bekannten Fachzeitschriften veröffentlicht werden (mehr dazu: Tipps für die wissenschaftliche Publikation ).

Das gelingt nur bei außergewöhnlich guten Arbeiten ; bei manchen Journalen sogar nur dann, wenn ein namhafter Wissenschaftler an der Erstellung beteiligt ist. Ein zweischneidiges Schwert, denn ein bekannter Ko-Autor kann zwar die Veröffentlichung vereinfachen, möglicherweise kommt der Aufsatz dann aber nicht mehr für die Dissertation infrage. Grundsätzlich gilt bei Publikationsdissertationen wie bei der Monographie: Der Eigenanteil muss bei Ko-Autorenschaften klar erkennbar sein. 

Peer-Review-Verfahren vor der Publikation

Die Auswahl der zu veröffentlichenden Texte erfolgt in den Redaktionen nach strengen Maßstäben: In sogenannten Peer-Review-Verfahren werden die eingereichten wissenschaftlichen Texte von unabhängigen Gutachter:innen gelesen und bewertet. Danach entscheidet sich, ob ein Text für eine Veröffentlichung im Journal geeignet ist.

Diese Verfahren können monate- oder sogar jahrelang dauern , vor allem, wenn noch Überarbeitungen nötig werden; es folgt das Warten auf die Veröffentlichung, die Voraussetzung für die Dissertation sein kann. Dieser energie- und nervenraubende Prozess muss bei einer kumulativen Dissertation in der Regel mehrfach durchlaufe n werden – bei einer Monographie nur einmal. 

Hinzu kommt, dass gemäß formaler Vorgaben oft zusätzlich zu den Artikeln eine Einleitung, überleitende Texte, ein Diskussionsteil und ein Fazit erstellt werden müssen. Unter dem Strich ist es durchaus möglich, dass der Aufwand in Summe größer ist als bei der Erstellung einer monografischen Dissertation.

Kosten: Welche Dissertationsform ist günstiger? 

Die Frage, welche Dissertationsform kostengünstiger ist, lässt sich laut der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) nicht eindeutig beantworten . So können sowohl Fachartikel als auch Monographien klassisch veröffentlicht werden – oder aber im sogenannten Open Access . Hierbei wird ein Buch oder ein Artikel im Internet kostenlos öffentlich zugänglich gemacht. Der Verlag stellt daher die anfallenden Kosten, die sonst üblicherweise von Abo- oder Nutzungsgebühren gedeckt werden, in vielen Fällen dem Verfasser oder dessen Einrichtung in Rechnung.

Die Kosten können dabei je nach Verlag sehr unterschiedlich hoch ausfallen. Doch nicht immer ist die Open-Access-Publikation kostenpflichtig: Die DFG verweist auf zahlreiche Open-Access-Journale, die keine Gebühren verlangen. Eine Übersicht bietet das Verzeichnis Directory of Open Access Journal (DOAJ) .

Die klassische Publikation als Artikel (gedruckt im Heft oder mit Bezahlschranke im Internet) ist dagegen in der Regel kostenfrei für den Autor oder die Autorin, bestenfalls gibt es sogar Tantiemen. 

Bei Monographien lässt sich laut DFG ebenfalls keine pauschale Aussage über die Kosten treffen. So könnten bei einer traditionellen Publikation der zuweilen vorgeschriebenen Pflichtexemplare durchaus mehrere Tausend Euro anfallen. Doch auch hier gibt es Verlage, die gebührenfreie Publikationsmöglichkeiten anbieten.

Ist ein Wechsel zwischen kumulativer Dissertation und Monografie möglich?

Beim Schreiben der Monographie bietet sich plötzlich die Gelegenheit, Teilergebnisse in einem angesehenen Fachjournal zu veröffentlichen. Ist es möglich, noch auf eine kumulative Dissertation umzusatteln? Die Antwort auf diese Frage lautet: Ja, wenn eine Sammeldissertation laut Promotionsordnung grundsätzlich erlaubt ist und der Promotionsbetreuende zustimmt. 

Auch im gegenteiligen Fall ist ein Umschwenken in begründeten Fällen meist möglich. Sollte sich während des Forschungsprozesses herausstellen, dass eine Aufsplittung in einzelne Artikel doch nicht umsetzbar ist, nicht alle veröffentlicht werden oder aus anderen Gründen die Publikation der – auch bereits erschienenen – Artikel in Form einer Monographie wünschenswert ist, kann in Absprache mit dem Promotionsbetreuenden die Art der Dissertation geändert werden.

Wichtig: Sind bereits Artikel erschienen, müssen die rechtlichen Vorgaben des Verlagsabgeklärt werden : Dürfen die publizierten Artikel in einer Monographie verwendet werden? Dürfen formale Anpassungen vorgenommen werden? Der Hinweis auf die entsprechende Ausgabe des Fachjournals, in der der Artikel erschienen ist, ist in der Regel verpflichtend.

Looking for a Supervisor

Procedure for the search for a supervisor

1. first decide on the topic

You should first think about the topic you would like to write about. Ideally, you should then summarize the topic in an exposé.

2. search for the first supervisor

You should look for a supervisor/first reviewer for your thesis one to two semesters before you start writing it. If you are unsure who is suitable for a topic, please contact the Student Counseling Service. Pay particular attention to the information about theses on the professorships' websites. There you will usually also find information on how best to apply for a thesis. If there is no information on this, we recommend that you always visit the office hours of the potential supervisor. If you make a request by email, you should make it very clear in writing exactly what you want to do for your thesis.

Please note that some examiners want to know their candidates, so you should have taken a final module examination with them. Please also refer to the information on the pages of the professorships.

You should look for your first examiner or supervisor yourself. 

If you cannot find anyone, you still have the option of being assigned a supervisor by the examination committee. However, we only recommend this procedure in an emergency. If you want to use this option, write an informal application in which you ask to be assigned a supervisor. The application should include the desired topic and also details of who has already rejected you. The application should be submitted to the Examinations Office by email. The examination committee will then assign someone to you.

3. Search for a second assessor if necessary

You can also look for a second assessor yourself, although the supervisor can recommend someone. If you register your thesis without a second assessor, the examination committee will automatically appoint someone. Please also note the specific requirements regarding your degree program and your study regulations.

4. final determination of the topic in consultation with the supervisor

Together with the supervisor (first reviewer), you then determine the final topic.

5. registration of the thesis

Finally, register your thesis with the Examination Office. The formalities are explained below.

Registering your thesis

There is no fixed period for registering a bachelor's or master's thesis. You can register your thesis at the Examination Office at any time using the registration form . You can post the registration form in the letterbox in front of the Examination Office at any time; it is not necessary to come in person during office hours. Please make sure that you have completed it in full.

You can find the form     in the   download area  under your field of study. 

After submitting the registration form, you will receive a confirmation letter from the Examination Office, which will also indicate the submission date for your dissertation.

To register for the dissertation, you must have completed the following modules or earned the following CP.

​Returning the topic, language, group work

The agreed topic can be returned once only and only within the first third of the processing time. The new topic must differ in content from the returned topic.

As a rule, you must write your thesis in German (exception: M.A. Comparative Democracy). In agreement with the examiners or the chairperson of the Examination Committee, you may write your thesis in English.

Theses in the form of group work can also be allowed if the individual student's contribution to be assessed as an examination achievement is clearly distinguishable and assessable through the indication of sections, page numbers and other objective criteria that enable a clear differentiation.

Processing times and scale

You must submit your thesis to the Examination Office of the Faculty of Social Sciences in due time. If the thesis is not submitted on time, it is deemed to have been failed.

If the first deadline cannot be met for reasons beyond the student's control (e.g. the student or a child cared for by the student is ill), the chairperson of the Examination Committee extends the processing time in accordance with the respective Study Regulations (see above). The student must apply for this informally to the Examination Office before the first submission date.

The thesis can be submitted at the earliest after 50% of the processing time.

Formal Requirements

Bachelor's theses :

• Submission of the thesis in 3 bound copies
• The Declaration on Examination Achievements must be bound in (see download area  under your field of study. ).
• You can discuss further formalities with your supervisor.
• On the cover sheet only the following: degree programme, thesis topic, author's name and submission date.

Master's theses :

• The Declaration on Examination Achievements must be bound in (see download area  under your field of study.).

Reviewers’ reports

The standard time for the reports by both reviewers together is 6 weeks after submission of the thesis. The second reviewer can limit himself/herself to co-signing the first reviewer's report if both award the same grade.

Oral Final Examination

Once you have passed your thesis, you must present it within an oral examination. The subject of the oral examination is the content of the dissertation as well as questions and/or tasks in the context of the topic chosen for it. The examination lasts 30 minutes. The supervisor and an observer are present.

As a rule, the student arranges the date for the oral examination with the supervisor and an observer, whereby there are no fixed time periods for this.

Cumulative dissertations

What’s a cumulative dissertation and what are the rules to consider.

A cumulative dissertation combines different publications in well-respected scientific journals into one doctoral thesis. You do not have to request a specific permission for a cumulative dissertation at the Faculty of Medicine at the LMU. However, you have to fulfill a number of criteria listed below. Most importantly, you have to have at least 2 publications of which at least one is a first-author publication. Both have to be at least accepted for publication. In addition, both papers have to be published in journals, which belong to the top 80% in their field .

Important: The foundation on which a cumulative dissertation is graded are not the papers themselves but the doctoral candidate's contribution to these publications! Thus, it is crucial to give a detailed explanation about the candidate’s contribution to the papers . This is best done in a separate chapter. The candidate should outline in detail, what his or her contribution was as this is the only way to evaluate the dissertation. Such an explanation has to be provided for each paper contributing to the cumulative dissertation, whenever there was more than one author. This means the explanation about the candidate’s contribution is also necessary for papers where the candidate is the first author.

Shared first authorship is also permitted but has to be explained clearly.

Since publications that are to be part of a cumulative dissertation must have been demonstrably produced as part of the doctoral project, the supervisor or at least one of the TAC members must be a co-author of these publications.

The information in these guidelines can be found in the corresponding Examination Regulations or was decided upon by the Doctoral Committees.

Prerequisites for a cumulative dissertation

• You do not need to apply for submitting a cumulative dissertation. However, only original work published in the top 80% of the subject-related journals will be accepted for cumulative dissertations.
• A minimum of 2 articles must be accepted or published in peer-reviewed, international journals. At least one of these articles must be published as first author. A shared first-author is possible and will be accepted as a regular first-author publication. Please note that as with co-authors, your own contribution must be shown in great detail. Further, you must submit an explanation as to how a shared first-authorship came to be. For dissertations in human medicine and dentistry that were registered after October 1, 2018 , a publication-based dissertation can be submitted even if only a very high-quality publication is available. The prerequisite is that the doctoral candidate is the sole first author of the publication and that it has been published in a journal which, based on its impact factor, is among the best 30% in the respective field .
• The publications must be original work .
• For all dissertations in human medicine, dentistry and human biology (aiming for an Dr. med., Dr. med. dent. and Dr. rer. biol. hum.) that have been registered before October 1, 2018 (under the “old study regulations”) publications used in the cumulative dissertation are not allowed to be part of another cumulative (current or completed) dissertation.
• The following publication forms are not allowed to or can only be used in certain cases for a cumulative dissertation:
• Short Report – if it corresponds to a publication on original work in form and content, then it can be used. Subject to decision on a by-case basis by the Doctoral Committee.
• Letter – if it is published in a journal with a double-digit impact factor and the data presented is equivalent to that of original work, then it can be used. Subject to decision on a by-case basis by the Doctoral Committee
• Methodological Publications . Subject to decision on a by-case basis by the Doctoral Committee.
• Meta-Analysis – you can submit a maximum of one meta-analysis for your cumulative dissertation. The second publication must be based on original work. Cochrane reviews and comparable systematic reviews are treated as equivalent to a meta-analysis.
• The following publication forms may not be used: review-articles, case studies.
• Unpublished manuscripts, review-articles and case studies; as well as short reports, letters and methodological publications, were not found sufficient after case-by-case evaluation by the Doctoral Committee, may nevertheless be included additionally in the dissertation if they are necessary for the understanding of the work, but must be clearly marked as additional contributions and are to be placed as an appendix at the end of the dissertation. These additional contributions can in no case replace the two main articles required under section A2. Additional contributions can only help to provide better scientific context and a more complete picture about the candidate’s scientific work. Please note that the Apendix of the dissertation is not a "collection point" for manuscripts and articles.

Formal composition of a cumulative dissertation

• The dissertation can be submitted either in German or English. Please note: only dissertations written in English are accepted for the PhD!
• Cover page (title, name, place of birth, year)

• Abbreviations
• Publication list
• Confirmation of co-authors The contribution of all co-authors must be confirmed and submitted separately . This is applies also to additional contributions as outlined by section 6A. The forms for the confirmation of co-authors, will be generated for you in your Campus Portal account. Please use these templates. Please do not include the signed lists into your bound thesis but hand them in together with all other documents when you submit your dissertation.
• Introduction The publications must be preceded by an introduction (5 – 10 pages, German or English), which describes the research project, as well as showing which higher problem connects the publications and which aspects are highlighted by the individual papers. In case of co-authorship, your own contribution must be described in detail for every original work (section A2) and all additional contributions (section A6). This also holds true for your first-author publications. For publication-based dissertations with only one very high-quality publication (see A2), the introduction must be very detailed and integrate the work into the scientific context (about 10 pages) . It is highly recommended, to explain your own contribution in a separate chapter.
• Summary The summary must be submitted in both German and English. Please note: for the PhD, points 8 and 9 are combined in an “introductory summary”, which is to be written in English. For publication-based dissertations with only one very high-quality publication (see A2) a detailed summary in your own words must be written (usually 2 pages). This summary must clearly explain the doctoral student's own contribution (ideally in a separate chapter).
• Publication I (including full details on title, authors, journal, year, issue. The publication must be included in your dissertation which you submit for the evaluation, the link to the publication is not sufficient at this point!)
• Publication II (including full details on title, authors, journal, year, issue. The publication must be included in your dissertation which you submit for the evaluation, the link to the publication is not sufficient at this point!) (You are, of course, allowed to submit more than 2 publications for a cumulative dissertation, as long as these fulfil the criteria mentioned under (A.).
