A wise man once said that “Any one woman or girl dying or becoming disabled from an unsafe abortion is one too many”. It goes without saying that abortion is one of the most important issues facing us today, especially in this democratic country and civilized society we have. Some may consider it as something immoral, and some may not. But have you ever considered how many women's lives could be changed simply by making this procedure legal? Just by having this as an option, they could have taken advantage of countless opportunities. Yet, because of the barriers or limitations imposed by the government, these women would no longer be able to have the one and only hope that abortion might provide—having this hope would no longer be available.

The abortion ban in the Philippines has been truly difficult for women as they have to endure and grasp the pain they have been feeling on their own. The legalization of abortion could significantly benefit and have a greater impact on women in many ways. To begin with, it would greatly affect the deduction of deaths and morbidities caused by complications done by unsafe abortions or procedures. According to the Lancet Regional Health, 1000 Filipino women die each year from post-abortion complications. There are significantly more fatalities as a result of illegal abortions, which is hence why abortion should be legalized and must be put into law to save the lives of women. These restrictions have only resulted in an epidemic of unsafe abortions that has claimed the lives of several Filipina women in silence. The government shouldn't be authorized to interfere with a woman's body; hence abortion should continue to be a choice for women. Women expose themselves to unsafe abortions, which could lead to multiple risks, not only to the woman herself, but to their own maternal health too. With access to safe abortion and post-abortion care, deaths & disabilities caused by unsafe abortion complications can be prevented.

In addition to that is the women’s human rights to bodily autonomy. Each individual has the right to defend their bodily autonomy, which same goes to these poor women as well that suffers from public taboo of putting abortion as an option. No one other than the woman carrying the fetus needs to know the precise reasons behind her decision to continue or end her pregnancy. Again, it’s her body, which means she has the rights to do whatever she decided to do on her own body. It is also not easy for women to create such a huge decision like doing abortion, however, considering the consequences and responsibilities affiliated in this matter, abortion is the only safest option to be executed. Parenting requires not only the emotional responsibilities and the financial resources to continuously sustain the child needs through their life but also, the time investment needed to raise them. According to the 2022 SWOP, the Philippines ranked 56th out of 150 countries in the number of unintended pregnancies at 71 per 1,000 women annually. Unintended pregnancies can further lead to cycles of high fertility, as well as lower educational and employment potential and poverty. Bringing a new life into the world when you're unable to provide for it in the manner that it deserves is infinitely more

selfish. Let us not force woman to carry a fetus in her womb if she’s not willingly to do so and has no intention on raising one. In the end, only the baby would suffer if the woman failed to sustain its basic needs. Isn’t it murdering the child as well if we let them suffer from the poverty when in the first place, they weren’t intended to be born? Let us not put pressure on women to deliver and raise a child if they cannot do it. Forced motherhood is equivalent to human enslavement.

Lastly, the women's human rights are violated because of the societal stigma in regards of abortion. As per CNN’s report, The Catholic Church hierarchy has a significant impact on society on the Philippines and greatly opposes the idea of abortion. Most Filipinos tend to think or consider abortion as a malicious topic as they consider it something sinful and is strongly condemned. Getting rid of this negative provision would make a huge difference to the society, as this gives a huge impact on women on how they decide for themselves. Women feels the pressure from people, which has forced them to resort to unsafe methods or abortions to end their unintended pregnancies or just continue to raise the child out of pressure. It is said to be that the church not only condemns abortion but forbids the use of modern contraceptives. If sex education can’t be an option, then why can’t abortion be one? Due to public stigma, we can’t assume that people already have a knowledge regarding about contraceptives and such as it is considered as a taboo in this country, and that is why the legalization of abortion makes it more plausible.

As for the individuals who opposes the idea of abortion or known as “Pro-life”, they think that unintended or unwanted pregnancies often results to a happy family and loved children, which hence why they think that abortion is something that shouldn’t be done or be considered as an option. However, that doesn’t mean that there is certainty that the woman was happy during the time the baby was delivered. Just because the woman continued to push through her pregnancy doesn’t guarantee that it was a convenient decision for her. According to BMC, Unintended pregnancy and motherhood contributed to increased risks of maternal depression and parenting stress. Women shall still be given access to maternal care and abortion by the government, so that they won’t be pressured to choose the latter choice, which happens in this modern day in the Philippines. Government should not take part or be given rights to dictate women on what they should do, whether they choose to opt for abortion or not. Moreover, "Pro-lifers" also believe that abortion is unethical and that murdering a fetus, who they think is a living human being, constitutes an unlawful killing. However, according to biology, Humans are complex organisms made up of trillions of cells, each with their own structure and function, and so are fetuses. Basically, by doing an abortion, we’re only exterminating the pregnancy tissues/cells and not entirely the elements that what makes up a human.

In conclusion, Abortion is a personal choice and not something that debated about. In all circumstances, I believe abortion should be permitted and accessible to all women or anyone who wishes to do so. These poor women need support, not
