‘Samajavaragamana’ movie review: Sree Vishnu and Naresh shine in this humorous family drama

Director ram abbaraju’s ‘samajavaragamana’ offers plenty of laughs that override the film’s shortcomings. sree vishnu and naresh are a riot.

Published - June 29, 2023 05:23 pm IST

Sangeetha Devi Dundoo

Vennela Kishore, Naresh, Sree Vishnu, Srikanth Iyengar and Reba Monica John in the Telugu comedy movie ‘Samajavaragamana’

The makers of the Telugu comedy-drama Samajavaragamana revealed just a sliver of the storyline in the trailer. Watching it, one might think there is nothing remarkable. But then more fun plot points unravel in the theatres and what follows is a hilarious ride. Director Ram Abbaraju has written the screenplay for the story by Bhanu Bogavarapu which revolves around a good-hearted middle-class family. The opening scene looks like it is from any other Telugu or Tamil film. The father (Naresh) wakes up in the morning and laments that the son, Balu ( Sree Vishnu ), is still asleep when there is an examination to be written. It would be unpardonable to reveal what happens next. Let’s just say expect the unexpected and it sets the stage for several comic moments.

There are these usual scenes one would see in a movie — a wastrel character who does not pass exams, a family member chiding him, a doting mother and sister, nosy relatives and so on. But the story cleverly turns the tables on two of the characters to offer a different familial equation. Even the chiding and the resulting humour come from a place of underlying respect.

Sree Vishnu plays the unassuming, good-natured man next door part with familiar ease and pulls off the comic moments with a poker face. It is Naresh’s character that is a revelation and he is a treat to watch. Much of the first hour happens within the unassuming household and there is a lived-in quality to the production design.

Samajavaragamana doesn’t aim too high. It wants to narrate a story of family ties and romance and has its heart in the right place. The story contrasts Balu’s warm family with that of his aunt’s, a stereotypical rich milieu that is distant and cold to family bonds. But these broad strokes aren’t much of a bother since the crux of the story is about the father and son and the romance between Balu and Sarayu (Reba Monica John).

A backstory is thrown in to explain why Balu shies away from falling in love. It seems whimsical and unimportant until a key pre-interval twist makes us look at his predicament in a new light.

Samajavaragamana (Telugu)

All through this transition, the humour (dialogues by Nandu Savirigana) keeps resurfacing at regular intervals aided by characters played by Sudarshan and later, by Srikanth Iyengar and a host of others. There are plenty of relatable jokes — like the ones about exorbitant food and drinks at multiplexes and even the social equation between those working in different multiplexes. The Asian Cinemas Vs. PVR segment, for instance, had the audience in splits.

When the scene shifts to Rajahmundry, the film opens up to several new characters and a merry-go-round of confusion. One character remarks that the situation is more complex than the names of the characters in Ponniyin Selvan! The writing also references several older Telugu movies, from Murari to Athadu and Jersey , in appropriate contexts to keep the jokes coming. And yet, the story begins to feel stretched in the later half. The songs don’t stand out and the picturisation in foreign locales doesn’t help either.

But despite these missteps, Samajavaragamana has several things working in its favour. The brief appearance by Vennela Kishore works to mirror the caste prejudice that is deeply entrenched in some people. The final twist can be described as a convenient cinematic liberty but, oh well, it works in a film that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Samajavaragamana is not perfect but is an entertaining laugh riot.

'Samajavaragamana' review: A family-above-all kind of film with solid, crowd-pleasing writing

Reba Monica John and Sree Vishnu in 'Samajavaragamana'.

When Sarayu (Reba Monica John) asks the family she is living with as a paying guest to treat her as one of their own, it feels odd for the next fifteen minutes or so, till we get a reason in the form of Balu (Sree Vishnu), the boy she eventually falls in love with. The answer snowballs into an ongoing theme when we meet her Rajahmundry-based family in the second half and have their proclivity for familial bonds be driven home, only for it to circle back to Balu and Sarayu.

There is a lot of love and family in the film, just not in the ways one can imagine them together. As the film unfolds over its two-hour odd runtime, Balu’s relationship with Sarayu is but the catalyst that enables many of the film’s other love stories to emerge — the love for families, the love for love marriages (and the loops they go through to find acceptance in India) and the love for rhyme-y, dialogue-heavy, observational comedy specific to Telugu cinema — that makes the film stand out as a noteworthy example in the family entertainer genre with writing that refuses to take anything, most of it itself, for granted.

Family entertainers are technically not a genre, if anything they can be characterised by its inability to adhere to the norms of a single genre, crunching action, comedy, romance and drama into one standalone feature. In other words, family entertainers are the cinematic equivalent of multi-cuisine restaurants, the proverbial jackfruit of all, master chef of none. Full disclosure, Samajavaragamana does not fare entirely well either with its all-too-obvious Ramoji Film City sets or cut-to-foreign location songs (this time it is the Sultanate of Oman), all of which serve as reminders of how this genre is practically a relic. But there are some surprises in store — like when we see Bala’s father (A very funny Naresh) struggle to pass his degree exams for three decades. There are enough jokes on how a man at his age is still struggling to pass college (“shashtipoorthi cheskune vayasu lo degree poorthi chesthunaaru enti”) but this is followed with some due urgency. Being a college graduate is what stands between him and a large inheritance, which his other siblings have gotten long back, an event that results in Balu’s extended family sharing haves vs have-nots dynamic on full blast.

Balu is seen as the sole breadwinner of his middle-class unit, working as a manager in a multiplex. In typical breadwinner fashion, he does not switch on lights when they are not needed, frowns upon buying multiplex popcorn and rarely takes leaves (he is seen at his workplace two hours after attending a wedding). Here is where the director takes his time through the first half to voice his support for the men who choose responsibilities over overarching displays of romance. In another part of the film, there is also some bawdy humour that mocks teenage girls falling in love with auto drivers and chaat bandi guys, to add on to the film’s stance against the love that treads the path of impulsiveness and irresponsibility.

While this is arguably the inner voice of this filmmaker (and many men), it also provides narrative padding to Sree Vishnu’s inability to come off as a boyfriend convincingly. One would not have questioned the actor here, for not turning into 90s Shah Rukh Khan when the occasion demanded him to, but it is nice to know that we get explanations that are actually just a part of the story.

Samajavaragamana turns into a different beast in its second half, when Balu and Sarayu can neither sell their union as a love marriage or an arranged one. Here is where the film’s themes take centrestage, as we witness the comical yet commonplace phenomena of love-cum-arranged marriages and its undoing. The latter portions of the film also opt for some commentary on caste, through the characters played by Vennela Kishore and Rajeev Kanakala. Much like 2019’s Evarikee Cheppodu (whose main lead Rakesh Varre bears some resemblance to Sree Vishnu), there are no caste names mentioned out loud. One can say they are playing it safe here (even K Viswanath and Srikanth Addala never mentioned the castes of their characters in Swayamkrushi and Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu, deploying subtext instead) but, choosing against citing certain castes also serves a particular (well-intentioned but debatable) message well. Discrimination is as discrimination does. As of now, this is the furthest Telugu cinema can move forward in its depiction of angst against the evils of caste-based prejudice.

Samajavaragamana’s comedy is one of its biggest strengths, playing to the gallery while being extremely self aware. Just when you think for the umpteenth time about the ubiquity of rhyming dialogues in Telugu cinema, the film’s writers also join you for a moment, by referencing Trivikram himself — with a gleeful clapback to the “rendu chethulu jebulo pettukuni… dialogue. Lakshman Tekumudi, whose very claim to fame is reviewing films outside the Prasads multiplex in a series of rhyming lines, weighs in as well, featuring in a meta appearance in the film as an eve-teaser.

There are gleeful clapbacks to films and memes, in addition to observational humour, satire and your classic blue comedy, all of which makes this film a strong contender for a theatre watch. Samajavaragamana’s writing really makes one wonder. If this is what can be achieved with a genre so familiar and choc-a-bloc with cliches, then why aren’t people doing it more often? Why is good writing rare? If writing is what can make or break a film…if proper screenwriting is less serendipitous and more in one’s control than star power or extravagant budgets, then why are writers so underpaid? Why are writers on strike in another part of the world? In a film with so much to say about many social issues, this is yet another message that comes off without much effort.

Samajavaragamana Movie Review: A Delightful Subversion of The Family Entertainer Genre

Samajavaragamana Movie Review

Director: Ram Abbaraju

Writers:  Bhanu Bogavarapu, Nandu Saviriganam, Ram Abbaraju

Cast: Sree Vishnu, Reba Monica John, Naresh VK, Srikanth Iyengar, Vennela Kishore

Samajavaragama puts the family in the family entertainer genre. For decades, Telugu cinema has produced numerous films in the name of ‘family entertainers’. Some of them can be family-friendly, meaning they are free of obscene content and are suitable for all ages. However, the majority of them—take two of the biggest hits of the year,  Waltair Veerayya   and  Veera Simha Reddy , for instance—are not family entertainers in any way. Samajavaragamana , on the other hand, is a true-blue, top-tier ‘family entertainer’ because the very core of the story is about family ties and relationships. Let me tell you, the film is not about  kutumba viluvulu  (family values), but about practical concepts like the Indian family tree, bloodlines, and familial relationships, quite literally. There hasn’t been a Telugu film that dealt with this central conflict, making Samajavaragamana a refreshing Telugu outing in a long time. I’m refraining from revealing the core conflict because the entire second half of the film rests on this single thread, and it’s best enjoyed going in with as little information about it as possible.

For a film that banks too much on one single idea,  Samajavaragamana  is cautious enough to avoid monotony. It’s a learning director Ram Abbaraju might have picked up from the experience of his debut, the humourous yet frustrating  Vivaha Bhojanambu (2021), which operated only on one idea: an orphan who wants to get married creates a fake family to win the approval of his girlfriend’s father and the chaos that ensues when both the families get stuck together when the lockdown is announced. It was an uproarious idea that, I felt, got tedious after a point. Ram Abbaraju ensures there is no room for redundancy this time by weaving multiple, hilarious subplots within the narrative.

The motive for the large part of the first half in  Samajavaragamana , for instance, is Balu (Sree Vishnu), the man of the house, forcing his father (Naresh VK) to complete his graduation. Yes, you read that right. A legal clause states that only his father’s graduation lets them inherit their ancestral properties and seeing Balu compel his father to study is a hilarious recurring gag. The son is the father of this house and this smart, witty subversion results in some of the most playful moments we have seen in Telugu cinema in recent times. For instance, when Balu drops his father off at the examination centre, he promises his father he’ll gift him a new bike if he passes the exams this time. The roles and responsibilities of the father and son are interchanged in so many sequences and every single gag lands perfectly. Naresh VK, sporting cool t-shirts, is undoubtedly the MVP of the film and he brings the roof down in numerous sequences—with Jersey ’s iconic train scene recreation and an engagement sequence being the most amusing ones of the lot. Sree Vishnu, who is very much in his comfort zone here, is a joy to watch as the dutiful son who is always uneasy, creating countless laugh-out-loud moments. The beauty is that this wonderful father-son element is only a subplot, with most of the fun being spun around the complicated love story between Balu and Sarayu (Reba Monica John). Ram Abbaraju clearly has a zone. He puts his confused, helpless protagonist among well-meaning but oddball characters in a madhouse. Samajavaragamana thrives in this space.

The biggest strength of  Samajavaragamana  is its writing. While Bhanu Bogavarapu’s story is quirky and charming, to begin with, Ram Abbaraju’s screenplay creates a narrative that has ample scope to set up numerous set pieces and impressionable characters, which Nandu Savirigana further uplifts with his dialogues. The conversations flow like a breeze, and so many times, a joke is followed by another joke; Nandu hits it out of the park with a gag about PVR. And then there’s an exchange about overpriced F&B in multiplexes. You see, the dialogues and situations work because they manage to crack the fine balance between being relatable and over-the-top.

Samajavaragamana  is not flawless. The gags do start to become a tad redundant because they are overdone towards the end, and the film doesn't know where to stop. The resolution and a sudden twist at the end feel conveniently placed. A serious monologue at the end feels like it belongs to a different movie. Thankfully, these shortcomings don’t taint  Samajagavaragamana  at all because the laughs it delivers overpower them. The film is truly one of the funniest films to come out of Telugu cinema in a long time. I’d rather let you enjoy it instead of explaining why it’s great because we all know what EB White said about humour. “Explaining a joke is like dissecting a frog. You understand it better but the frog dies in the process.” Samajavaragamana is a film that needs to be enjoyed in a packed house.

Samajavaragamana Movie Review: The Sree Vishnu, Naresh, Reba Monica John starrer is a hilarious family drama filled with clean comedy

60-year-old Uma Maheshwara Rao(Naresh) belongs to a rich family but to inherit his ancestral property, he needs to complete his graduation. So, he joins special coaching classes at a reputed training center. There, he meets Sarayu(Reba Monica John) and becomes good friends with her. He even suggests that Sarayu stays at his home as a paying guest. Things change when Sarayu falls in love with Uma's son, Balu(Sree Vishnu) who is not into love and relationships. Sarayu tries hard to convince Balu and when thing seems to go fine, the family of the girl's side ends up saying that Balu and Sarayu are first cousins and distant siblings in relation. Well, how Balu and Sarayu face this tricky situation and end up tying the knot is the basic story of Samajavargamana.

Right from the day, the film's trailer was launched, we got an idea that Samajavaragamana is going to be high on tongue-in-cheek humor. The same happens as the film has some of the best dialogues in recent times when it comes to comedy. The usage of slang words that we use in our daily lives is so nicely engraved into the proceedings. Some of the best lines are written for Sree Vishnu who plays a responsible son for a reckless father who is playing around in life and this evokes solid comedy.

Director Ram Abbaraju pens scenes in such a way that the son is being strict towards his playful father played by Naresh. The scenes between Sree Vishnu and Naresh are hilarious, to say the least. In a way, more than the romantic angle between the lead pair, the confrontations between the father and son are the biggest highlight and evoke superb fun.

Samajavaragamana

Samajavaragama is made on a light note and has clean comedy which is a rarity these days. The film has a good supporting cast and the family drama is decent. There are not many moments that are melodramatic for no reason. The writing is simple and has nothing new to showcase. A lead pair being mistaken as siblings sounds weird but has been handled on a decent note in the film.

Samajavaragamana

Samajavaragaman clicks mainly because of its fine performance from the least cast. Sree Vishnu, who was experimenting with serious roles comes back to the boy next door role and is amazing. His dialogue delivery and the fun antics he showcases in the film are a laugh riot. He entertains the audience till the end and shares very good chemistry with the female lead Reba Monica John. The young actress looks beautiful and gets a key role. She plays a key part in the first half and her diction and screen presence are impressive.

image_item

Yet another major highlight of Samajavaragamana is Naresh, the senior actor. Just a few days back, Naresh was seen in the controversial Malli Pelli where he played a very complex role. Here, he plays a college-going student and his comedy timing is superb. His role as Uma Maheshwara Rao will get the biggest cheer in the auditorium. There is a scene where Naresh reprises the euphoric train episode from Nani's Jersey. The audience in the theatre erupts with laughter and there are many such moments in Samajavaragamana which keep the audience entertained.

sree-vishnu

The songs are decent and the production design for this low-budget film is neat. The family visuals and camera work are handled on a decent note. The director Ram Abbaraju should be appreciated for holding the attention of the audience with his comedy. Though the lead paid being termed as siblings sound weird in the film, the scenes that follow create such humor that one does not pay much attention to it.

Samajavaragamana's runtime is also a bonus and none of the scenes are dragged to give the audience the scope to look at the exit door. After a long time, here comes a film that provides good comedy even though the story is simple. As there are not many big films that have impressed in the recent past, Samajavaragamana will have solid prospects at the Tollywood box office as well.

Samajavaragamana is a hilarious comedy caper that is filled with fun-filled relatable moments throughout the film. The performances of Sree Vishnu and Naresh are an added bonus. Though the premise is predictable, the clean comedy and engaging dialogue make this film a very entertaining watch with your entire family.

samajavaragamana movie review

2 Hr 30 mins   |   Family   |   29-06-2023

Cast - Sree Vishnu, Reba Monica John, Naresh, Sudarshan, Srikanth Iyengar, Vennela Kishore and others

Director - Ram Abbaraju

Producer - Razesh Danda

Banner - AK Entertainments

Music - Gopi Sundar

Sree Vishnu previously tried his hand in the action genre. After some futile attempts, he returns to comedy which is his forte. The teaser and trailer of Samajavaragamana garnered good interest. Will the film live up to the expectations? Will Sree Vishnu break the jinx and make a solid comeback? With no further delay, let’s find out.

Plot:

Balu (Sree Vishnu), a responsible middle-class son working at a multiplex, is the sole bread-winner of his loving family. He hates love and relationships. Thus, he ensures the girls interested in him tie him Rakhi. He meets Sarayu (Reba Monica John) whom he is obliged to accept as a paying guest house. Sarayu initially falls for Balu. Things change and Balu reciprocates. Sarayu’s family and the past turns out to be a major hurdle. But this is not. Things complicate further when an unexpected problem surfaces. How Balu and Sarayu win their love is Samajavaragamana all about.

Performances

Sree Vishnu performed well as Balu. He played to his strengths – humour. The mannerism and body-language of Vishnu prove that he is the perfect choice for the role. Some lengthy dialogues mouthed by him seem to be delivered hastily. The trick may not have worked well, but his lengthy dialogues on girls get claps from guys. Naresh VK is the highlight of Samjavaragamana. His examination scenes and classroom scenes bring ROFL moments. Heroine Reba Monica does her part well. She slips into modern outfits while doing jigs in the songs and she is easy on the eyes there. Srikanth Iyengar, who got stereotyped with serious and villain roles, gets a refreshing role in this film. Nellore Sudarshan is alright as the hero’s friend. Vennela Kishore in the latter-half deserves better comedy. He sticks to his usual style. All the actors have justified their roles.

Technicalities

Writing and direction of Samajavaragamana scores brownie points. Despite being a debutante, Ram Abbaraju pulled it off well. Production values are adequate. Songs are shot well. But Gopi Sundar’s songs failed to entertain. The placement of songs is also put off as it obstructs the story flow. Camera work and editing work are decent. The film has an adequate run-time. Technically, there is nothing much to grumble about.

Sree Vishnu & Naresh

Hilarious Scenes

Conflict Point

Thumbs Down

Stretched Out Drama In Second-Half

Right from the word go, Samajavaragamana is entertaining. The very introduction of the characters and set-up of the film is funny. Even as audiences settle in theatres, the film turns out to be a laugh riot. Comedy is something that everyone would enjoy. But it is hard to write and tough to create on screen. Kudos to the writers for churning out good humour without any vulgarity and actors who made it.

The first half tickles the funnybones of audiences. The scenes are fresh and the chemistry between the lead pair ably supports the film. Father-son duo scenes are hilarious in the first-half. Naresh VK gets the room in splits. The humour is imbibed organically into the story and narrative. This is where the director made his mark. The interval twist is really worth the watch. This gives a spin to the story. Revolving around a simple point on the relationship of hero-heroine, debutante director Ram Abbarajau managed to hold the interest in the film till the end. The conflict of the film is intriguing. It is unusual but holds well and credit goes to the director here.

The second-half is where Samajavaragamana’s real story unfolds and also faces some issues. It has both highs and lows. The director made sure the film has laughable moments spread evenly. In the latter half, it worked in parts. Dialogues are clapworthy.

Having said the above, Samajavaragamana still has scope to improve. Particularly, the stretched out drama in the latter-half is somewhat irking at portions. Vennela Kishore thread is cliched. It has become too routine. Probably, better writing of Kishore’s comedy would have taken the film to the next level. Barring its shortcomings, Samajavaragamana delivers. It caters to what it aims for. Go for this out-and-out entertainer and you won’t complain much. It gives a satisfying feeling of watching humour in cinemas after a longtime.

Bottom-line: A Breezy Entertainer

Rating: 3/5

Director Ram Abbaraju of Vivaha Bhojanam (2021) fame has come up with Samajavaragamana (Walking with a Giant of an Elephant) this time.

Starring Sree Vishnu and Reba Monica John in the lead roles, the story revolves around a relatable subject — marriage.

Even as the film is set to hit the screens on 29 June, here’s our review:

Reba John Samajavaragamana

Reba John’s ‘Samajavaragamana’. (Sree Vishnu/ Instagram)

Balu (Sree Vishnu) works in a cosy multiplex while fighting the typical travails of running a middle-class family.

The property that his father Uma Mahesh (VK Naresh) inherits can only be transferred if the latter obtains a degree certificate. And it remains a mission unaccomplished for the last 25 years.

Given the distant implications, Balu develops thrifty, honest and aspirational qualities. He decides upon saying no to love proposals from girls. Being the sole breadwinner of his family, Balu couldn’t afford this luxury. He would turn every girl into his sister and make them tie rakhi.

Here’s when Reba Monica’s character Jaan steps into his life, takes him in her arms and plants a resounding kiss, thus awakening all his sensual points.

The latter half of the movie explores the impediment to the hero accepting Reba’s marriage proposal. Will his father pass Uma Mahesh his degree exam to inherit the property to the family’s name is the story that awaits you.

A rib-tickling watch.

Sometimes you wouldn’t know where to start while describing a film when it gives deep, loud and hearty laughter to almost every sequence – from the word go to the end frame.

Samajavaragamana is one rare film that leaves your stomach hurt, especially as you observe your giggle turning into a guffaw. However, the intensity of laughter differs from individual and you can’t help when you’re so immune to the jokes.

The father-son comedy track works big time. Your rib cage starts contracting whenever Sree Vishnu and VK Naresh appear on the screen. Sree Vishnu’s characterisation as an annoyed middle-class employee and his endless attempts to get his father to sail through the degree exams is a rib-tickling episode.

You may feel that Sree Vishnu’s “Godavari” dialect probably gave him the edge in perfectly nailing the comedy timing. But you know the credit for the freshness in dialogues should go to writer Nandu Savirigana.

Director Ram Abbaraju should be duly credited for connecting the dots to get the perfect picture in the end.

Sree Vishnu and Reba John in Samajavaragamana

Sree Vishnu and VK Naresh take over the control of the entire first half dishing out unlimited laughter.

Samajavaragamana comes as a fresh breeze for Sree Vishnu who is grappling with a flop streak after Raja Raja Chora (2021).

For senior actor VK Naresh, the film is another rewarding experience as a supporting actor.

Nellore Sudarshan is another acting talent who has this knack for emoting audiences with his expressions and voice. He plays Box Office Badshah. His combination scenes with Sree Vishnu are another highlight of the movie.

Debutante Reba Monica bagged a hit with her debut. Her role as a fun, college-goer is impressive.

In the second half, Vennela Kishore’s character Kula Sekhar draws whistles from the crowd. This will remain one of the memorable on-screen performances in his career, though he delivered a long list of rib-tickling performances in the past.

Kula Sekhar is a caste fanatic who wants his clan to grow and outperform other humans on the planet. He would even ask a beggar his caste before he has to offer anything. Even in his life-death situations, Kula Sekhar would seek help only from his caste!

Srikanth Iyengar and Rajeev Kanakala impress us with their roles.

Raghu Babu as principal Saraswathi looks good. Imax Lakshman grabs some screen time in the film and does well.

Technicalities.

Sree Vishnu Samajavaragamana

Sree Vishnu’s ‘Samajavaragaman’. (Sree Vishnu/ Twitter)

Apart from the humour, Samajavaragamana banks big on its story and the screenplay that makes you glued to the screen.

Cinematographer Raam Reddy does well in giving rich visuals and music from Gopi Sundar does enough to elevate the story.

The party number “ Ee life eh choti choti re ” and the song “ Ithade Naa Humsafar ” are placed at the right time in the plot. However, you may feel the singles are just fillers for this commercial family entertainer.

Nevertheless, the film’s minor setbacks won’t show up because of the humour quotient.

For example, Sree Vishnu’s sister doesn’t fit into the space when she speaks the Telangana dialect. The character seems an oddball in the entire family who mostly has the roots of Andhra nativity.

In a scene, Goparaju Ramana gets preachy at the Registrar’s office when a bride arrives too early from the scheduled time and waits for her fiancé. This appears as if it’s forcibly inserted into the story to make the female protagonist realise how important it is to select a responsible groom.

Such sequences look outlandish and superficial, non-synch with reality. But the intensity of laughter and suspense in the story until the last minute overshadows these not-so-glaring blunders.

But in the end, you may experience a sense of lightness in you because of two hours of continuous laughter.

In all, Samajavaragamana is like a fresh breeze of entertainment for Tollywood which hasn’t witnessed any all-round entertainer in the recent past. Watch it and laugh your lungs out.

Samajavaragamana Review – Hilarious, But Stretched

Samajavaragamana Review

BOTTOM LINE Hilarious, But Stretched

OUR RATING 2.75/5

U/A, 2h 20m

Sree-Vishnu-Samajavaragamana-Movie-Review

Sarayu (Reba Monica John) becomes Balu’s (Sree Vishnu) paying guest in his house under a unique circumstance. She falls in love with Balu’s nature and his family. However, Balu is averse to love and ties Rakhi to anyone proposing to him.

How do Balu and Sarayu fall in love? The movie’s core story is the bigger problem of their marriage and how it ends.

Performances

Sree Vishnu has, in the past, proven his comic abilities in a few movies like Brochevarevarura, Raja Raja Chora etc. His timing and delivery in landing the punches work the most. Samajavaragamana is another demonstration of his ability in that department. The movie is filled with it from the start to the end.

Reba Monica John looks good on screen and has a charm going on about her, which works decently during rom-com moments, however less they are. The beauty isn’t the mass-appealing variety but the trendy urban type, which fits neatly here.

Director-Ram-Abbaraju

Ram Abbaraju of Vivaha Bhojanambu fame provides the screenplay and directs Samajavaragamana. It is a family entertainer with a rom-com angle at its core.

A girl loves a boy – first, they have a problem, and then together have a bigger issue to deal with. It is a routine plot seen many times, but Ram Abbaraju gives it a minor tweak to make it seem fresh. And it works, to his desired intention.

The basic story provides a neat platform to pack it with comic gags continuously. The comedy is of silly variety full of rhymes and punches. It is self-aware, which gives them the edge, and then the actors deliver.

Consider these – ‘Calm,B.com’, ‘Sadism-Buddhism-Pawanism’, ‘Bariselu, Varasalu’, ‘Jaki-Raki-Muki’, ‘Abcd-KCPD’, etc. and many more such rhyming punches. Then there are multiple gags, all of which keep the narrative busy.

The initial stretch involves a lengthy track with Naresh. The comedy is silly to the core but works because of the actors and the predictable yet relatable situations. Most of the fresh-sounding bits appear in the first half.

The real twist in the story arrives around the interval mark. The hook is such that one instantly knows where things will head post-intermission.

As expected, the entire comedy is centred around the hook/twist. One scene after the other, milk it to the maximum possible level. However, it also leads to a feeling of repetitiveness after a point. Still, the comedy works that makes it all okay.

Even a new addition (Vennela Kishore in a role and situation seen before millions of times) track seems fine at the start but feels repetitive soon. And that’s the main issue with Samajavaragamana.

The movie banks heavily on silly comedy based entertainment. The writing is filled with one-liners from the start to the end. As things progress, one feels that there is nothing else in the movie. The entertainment starts to wear out in the second half as the narrative becomes more formulaic.

Additionally, the dramatic thread is highly predictable and is resolved too quickly for its own good with far-fetched and illogical scenes. One can easily understand that they were put forcibly to make the comedy work (the situations) and end things quickly without going into the drama much. Strangely, Naresh’s character, the major asset of the first half, is entirely sidelined in the second half, with only brief appearances.

Overall, Samajavaragamana is designed as a non-stop entertainment ride with silly and rhyming writing for comedy. It works big in the first half but gets repetetive in the second half stretched comedy blocks. However, it’s worth a one-time watch for all the fun it offers.

Actor Naresh

Naresh and Sudarshan easily stand out among the crowd. Naresh drives a large chunk of the narrative in the first half, and Sree Vishnu and the senior actors nail it. He is an asset to the film in the first half. Sudarshan is seen intermittently initially but gets more prominence during the second hour, he is alright.

Among the rest, Srikanth Iyenger is his usual self. Vennela Kishore has a routine role but a unique character and does his job. There is a plethora of actors, and some have a moment or two here and there, but that’s it.

Music-Director-Gopi-Sundar

Gopi Sundar provides music to the film, and it’s disappointing. The background score is comparatively better, but it is also a serviceable type at best and nothing more. Raam Reddy’s cinematography is alright, whereas Chota K Prasad’s editing is neat, keeping things simple and basic.

The writing is the highlight, as mentioned previously. Nandu Savirigana’s dialogues provide non-stop fun even though the punching power sees a slow fade during the second hour.

Final Report:

Samajavaragamana is a comedy entertainer that delivers big in the first half. It gets repetitive in the second but has enough going for it to make a decent one-time watch. Go for it.

First Half Report:

Samajavargamana’s first half is thin on plot but has nonstop (silly/prasa) comedy which keeps things afloat. A twist in the tale occurs at the interval to resume the entertainment flow in the second half. We have to see how well it delivers.

Samajavaragamana Review: Out And Out Comedy

Movie: Samajavaragamana Rating: 3/5 Banner: Ak Entertainments, Hasya Movies Cast: Sree Vishnu, Reba Monika John, Naresh VK, Vennela Kishore, Sreekanth Iyengar, Raghu Babu, Rajeev Kanakala, Devi Prasad, Priya and others Music: Gopi Sundar Director of Photography: Raam Reddy Editor: Chota K Prasad Art Director: Brahma Kadali Producers: Razesh Danda Screenplay and Direction: Ram Abbaraju Release Date: June 29, 2023

Sree Vishnu has recently suffered setbacks following a string of flops. After experimenting with various film genres, he has returned to the comedy genre.

Let us weigh its advantages and disadvantages.

Story: Balu (Sree Vishnu) works as a ticketing clerk in a multiplex theater and lives with his parents. His father (Naresh) has been attempting to pass his degree exam for decades. According to Balu's grandfather's will, they will inherit crores of rupees only if his father passes the graduate exam.

Through his father, Balu meets Sarayu (Reba Monika), who is also not good at studies and is attempting to pass supplementary exams. She eventually becomes a paying guest in their home. Balu and Sarayu fall in love.

The plot twist is that they learn that Balu's brother-in-law is marrying Sarayu's cousin, which complicates their relationship. What exactly is the problem?

Artistes’ Performances: Sree Vishnu has always been good at playing middle-class youngster roles. He has superb comic timing. After a long wait, he landed a role that is right in his wheelhouse, and he nailed it with ease. Reba Monika looks suited for the role.

VK Naresh also does a lot of comedy. The senior actor is in top form here. In the role of a caste fanatic, Vennela Kishore brings the house down in the second half of the film. Srikanth Aiyynger is okay.

Technical Excellence: Songs serve as roadblocks in comedy movies. Gopi Sundar's only one romantic song is catchy but the other numbers do not work and, as previously stated, obstruct the flow. The cinematography in the film is adequate. Nandu Savirigana's dialogue writing is very good.

Highlights: Comedy dialogues Srivishnu's performance Naresh's track  Hilarious first half Interval twist

Drawback: Simplistic climax Not so tight second half

Analysis "Samajavaragamana" is a fam-com, or a romantic comedy with family elements. Although the film is primarily a rom-com, the plot twist makes it different from the regular.

In general, lovers face opposition from their parents, caste issues, class differences, or ego issues. However, the lovers in "Samajavaragamana" face an unusual problem. The film's strength stems from this novel concept. This twist not only stands out, but it also generates a lot of laughter.

The narrative is uncomplicated. The director establishes early on that he intends to make audiences laugh no matter what. The first scene itself is hilarious. In order to do well in school and on tests, fathers often encourage their children to wake up early and study hard. In this case, it's the son who takes charge and asks his father to clear the exam.

The film then shifts its attention to the developing romance between the hero and heroine. Even during the typical romantic scenes, the one-liners continue. The jokes are at their funniest at the interval twist. Marriage is forbidden for the couple because their "vavi varusa" is not correct due to some circumstances. Many jokes have been made as a result of this chaos.

The film is hilarious throughout but the first half scores better than the second half in the humor department. Thankfully, the comedic relief of Vennela Kishore's appearance as Kula Sekhar saves the final act.

The title "Samajavaragamana" doesn’t have justification. However, there are a few minor improvements that could have been made, to make this film sit on the top of entertainers.

Overall, "Samajavaragamana" is a family entertainer, with both funny and romantic parts. However, you will laugh out loud when the jokes land. It's popcorn entertainment.

Bottom line: Hasya Varagamana

Samajavaragamana Movie Review : A Good Comedy Film

Samajavaragamana Movie Review

Samajavaragamana Movie Review

Telugu360 Rating: 2.75/5

Middle-class Balu (Sree Vishnu) works at a multiplex ticket sales counter. Balu’s ambition is to make his father (Naresh) pass a degree because only if his father gets the degree the grandfather’s property will get into their hands. After failing the exams for two decades, finally, Dad asks a youngster Sarayu (Reba Monica John) to help him in clearing the exams. Sarayu joins Balu’s home as a paying guest. Sarayu loves Balu but Balu refuses to. The rest of the movie is about whether Balu finally accepted her or not. After accepting her what are the new challenges they encounter?

Analysis: The core strength of the film ‘ Samajavaragamana ‘ is the writing. Right from the word go audience does notice the freshness in the story, Quality of the dialogue writing. Director Ram Abbaraju delivers an engaging and relatable narrative. Dialogue writer Nandu has come up with contemporary youth lingo as well as homely family-oriented dialogues. The first half of the film is one of the best entertainers in recent times. Sree Vishnu and Naresh breathe life into their characters. Reba Monica performs her role effectively. This debut heroine takes time to sync, effective as the movie progresses. Srikanth Iyengar, and Nellore Sudhakar got meaty roles and they did well. In the second half, Vennela Kishore makes an entry as ‘ Kula Sekhar ‘ and delivers satires on those with caste feelings. On the songs front, Gopi Sundar could have done better work. Only one song ‘ Dhak Dhak Duniya ‘ is appealing.

The second half of the film is also appealing but compared to the first half it falls a little short. The main point of the second half is a little stretched. A simple climax effectively closes the film on a Happy note. Production values are decent and more than required for a comedy film. The songs are well filmed but disrupt the narrative.

Positives: Out and Out Comedy Fresh Story Fantastic dialogues Fine performances from all actors

Slightly stretched point in 2nd half

Musically could have been better.

Samajavaragamana offers superb comedy entertainment, engaging scenes, and mainly fresh story after a long time in Telugu. It’s Youthful and appeals to families as well. Go and watch this film on Big Screen with the entire family.

Release date: 29th June 2023 Director: Ram Abbaraju Music director: Gopi Sundar Cinematography: Raam Reddy Language: Telugu Producers: Rajesh Danda, Balaji Gutta, Anil Sunkara

A delightful Telugu comedy hit the screens in 2023! “Samajavaragamana,” directed by Ram Abbaraju and produced by Rajesh Danda under the banners of AK Entertainments and Comedy Movies, charmed audiences with its witty story and engaging performances.

Sree Vishnu, Reba Monica John, Vennela Kishore, Naresh, and Srikanth Iyengar brought the characters to life in this critically acclaimed film. Titled after a Telugu word for “social gathering,” the first look premiered on Valentine’s Day, followed by a teaser released on Sree Vishnu’s birthday in February.

“Samajavaragamana” finally graced theaters on June 29th, 2023, and won hearts with its hilarious moments and heartwarming themes.

Stuck in a multi-generational academic limbo, Balu juggles his job, family responsibilities, and a blossoming romance with Sarayu.

As the sole breadwinner, duty weighs heavily on Balu’s shoulders. He despises romance, yet finds himself falling for the charming Sarayu. Meanwhile, Balu’s father pursues an elusive bachelor’s degree, chasing an inheritance tied to his graduation. When Sarayu becomes a paying guest in their home, hilarious antics ensue as Balu takes on the unexpected role of tutor for both his father and his love interest.

But just as romance seems to bloom, an engagement throws them into disarray. The mystery of this engagement and the obstacles it presents become the heart of the film, leaving audiences wondering: will Balu and Sarayu escape this predicament and find their happily ever after?
