How Technology Affects Communication
Three can be no possible doubt that humankind has made a tremendous breakthrough in advancing global communication in recent years. These changes have seeped quickly into every domain and area, causing people to change their manner of interactions and explore new possibilities. Of all the ways in which technology affects communication, one may distill three key trends, which are diversification, ease of access, and speed of data processing.
The rise in the quality and extent of the multicultural dialogue is one of the most evident and notable changes that technology has brought to the communication field. The existing evidence of the intercultural discourse and the focus on diversity proves that the described effect of technology on communication has been tremendous (Gut et al., 2017). Specifically, social networking is currently one of the crucial manifestations of technology diversifying communication and expanding the bandwidth of opinions and knowledge sharing online (Gut et al., 2017). Thus, a flood of new ideas and experience sharing opportunities are the primary effects of technology on communication.
The ease of access is another doubtless change that technology has brought into the communication context. Individuals with impairments that may have prevented them from participating in communication before, such as hearing issues, nowadays have the tools that can help them receive information and produce responses without a significant effort (Alper & Goggin, 2017). Moreover, with innovative tools that have become particularly easy to handle in almost any circumstances, the conversation process can continue seamlessly without the physical presence of the participants. The outlined change has provided both improvements and certain sources of discomfort since distancing oneself from an unwanted or untimely communication has become nearly impossible. The observed change may have become one of the contributors to the increasing communication fatigue that has been gaining momentum globally (Yim, 2019).
Additionally, apart from being easily accessed, communication becomes increasingly more difficult to erase. Since data concerning any online exchange remains stored in corresponding directories for decades, every word uttered online is immediately woven into the tapestry of one’s digital interactions with the global community. The described phenomenon leads to people becoming wary of the opinions and ideas that they express online since they may be held accountable for the beliefs of which a particular community may disapprove (Ng, 2020). At the same time, the observed phenomenon has led to the identification of problems and biases within communities, informing the measures aimed at increasing diversity and promoting collaboration and tolerance.
That being said, claiming that technology produces either solely positive or negative effects on communication would imply stretching the truth. Instead, the impact of technology on communication represents mostly the emergence of new tools that can be utilized either for the benefit of the participants or to the detriment of the communication process. Therefore, in itself, the effects of technology on communication are mostly neutral, with the evident trend toward expanding the concept of communication, in general (Akram & Kumar, 2017). Consequently, it would be more legitimate to represent the effects of technology on communication as mostly neutral phenomena that can be utilized both to enhance the effectiveness of the conversation and to reduce it.
Overall, three main effects that technology has produced on communication, namely, multiculturalism, accessibility, and speed of information transfer must be listed first. The specified outcomes have determined the essential characteristics of the modern communication process and the choices that people make during conversations, including the amount and quality of information to convey. The observed changes have played an especially prominent role with the introduction of restrictions on personal communication due to the rise in pandemic rates and the global transfer to the digital communication setting. Although the effects that technology has produced on communication cannot be coded as either negative or positive unambiguously, they have clearly offered a plethora of new opportunities.

Modern Communication Impacted by Technology Essay
Technology has fundamentally altered how people connect with one another globally compared to prior generations. The alterations have been so profound, in fact, that conventional methods of communication like letters, telegraphs, and even phone conversations are disappearing. People today have more alternatives and influence over how they interact than ever before because of technological improvements (Kanki, 2019). The purpose of this writing is to examine how communications have evolved as a result of technological advancement.
Individuals now have additional options for communicating with people because of technology. People today have a wide range of alternatives for communicating on both a personal and professional level. The glorious thing about all of these choices is that people may select the one that best suits their requirements without being restricted to a single strategy. Video chats, messaging, and conferences may be the most prominent technology development that has altered how people connect with others. Talking to friends and relatives becomes more intimate as a result. Video conferencing helps businesspeople observe what is happening, study graphs and statistics, view lectures, and more. In the past, customers were forced to use one of the few remaining classic phone providers and pay their rates, particularly for international roaming. Let them not forget that incurring roaming fees when leaving their nation is another possibility. In the modern era, consumers do not even have to be concerned about any of these expenses because they have choices for interaction like WhatsApp.
In conclusion, technology has significantly changed the way people communicate. There are always new platforms and gadgets available. No matter where they are in the globe, people are already linked to people at a moment’s notice, thanks to video and super-fast communications. Speed will undoubtedly continue to have an influence on the development of communication technology. Humans can hope that holographic interactions will be one of the things that are soon to be made accessible.

Technology – Changing Communication Around the World
Thomas Atkinson
- April 7, 2022
- Reading Time: 4 minutes
In comparison to previous generations, technology has drastically changed the way we communicate with each other around the world. In fact, the changes have been so significant that traditional types of communications like letters, telegraphs and even phone calls are becoming extinct. Through these advancements in technology, we now have more control over how we communicate than ever before, and have more options.
Table of Contents
More Communication Options
Technology has really opened up more ways for us to communicate with others. Whether it’s personal or professional communication , we now have many options to choose from. And, the great thing about all of these options is that we can choose what’s best for our needs without being tied down to just one method.
Video Communication
Perhaps, the most notable technological advancement that has changed the way we communicate with others is video chats, messages or conferences. It makes talking to friends and family more personal. For businesses, video conferences make it easier to see what’s going on, view charts and data, view presentations and more. The following are just a few examples of video communication :
- Skype – this is one of the most popular ways for personal and professional video communication. Talk to other Skype members for free, share information and more.
- FaceTime – the iPhone doesn’t even require an app like Skype to video chat. All you need is another iPhone user to communicate with via video.
- Apps and tools like Slack or Cisco WebEx are great examples of video conferencing at its finest. They can also be used to manage and increase workflow.
Faster Communication
It started with text messaging and has only improved from there. We can now send a text message within seconds and add images, emojis and other effects to friends and family members around the world. If you have compatible smartphones, like two iPhones, you can send iMessages which has plenty of options for personalizing your messages. Other examples of faster communication are:
- FB Messenger – Hundreds of millions of people around the world have Facebook. An easy way to communicate quickly with other FB users is through their FB Messenger app. Send messages, videos, images, emojis and more.
- Voxer – This app is like having your own walkie talkie. It requires that both parties are using this app. With just one tap, your message will be sent lightning fast. Additionally, you can send audio or video messages in a moment’s notice. It’s a great tool for businesses with mobile reps.
Cost-Effective Communication
In the past, we were locked into one of the few traditional phone companies and a slave to their rates. Especially, with regards to international phone calls. Let’s also not forget how traveling outside your country can also rack up roaming charges. Nowadays, we don’t even have to worry about any of these fees because we have communication options like the following:
- WhatsApp – With this app, you can send unlimited messages, enjoy group chats, send messages from your web browser, call friends and family members who also have this app, which includes free international calls.
- WeChat – This app is similar to WhatsApp as it also offers free messages, voice or video calls, group chats, desktop chat, and will even translate messages into your local language.
Social Media
Social Media has not only changed the way we communicate, but it has also revolutionized our daily lives in many ways like web browsing, connecting with others and getting the news. For example, we can get news quicker via Social Media than traditional outlets and we’re always informed on what’s trending throughout the world. Additionally, we can interact with our favorite celebrities and never miss any Hollywood gossip.
Social Media has also taught us how to communicate within a number of characters like Twitter or through video clips like Snap Chat. Additionally, we’ve been taught how to express ourselves and our businesses through images via Instagram. We can’t overlook how hashtags have also impacted the way we express ourselves and look up content, thanks to companies like Twitter and Instagram.
What Does the Future Hold?
One can only imagine how technology will continue to evolve the way we communicate. With video and lightning fast messaging, we are already connected to others in a moment’s notice no matter where they’re located in the world. It’s a safe bet that speed will continue to impact the advancements of communication tech. One area that we can hope will become available in the near future is holographic communications.
