how do you close assignments in google classroom

Along with instruction and assessment, assignments form the foundation of the teaching and learning process. They provide opportunities for students to practice the skills and apply the knowledge that they have been taught in a supportive environment. It also helps the teacher gauge how well students are learning the material and how close they are to mastery.

Because of the nature of assignments, managing them can get hectic. That’s why its best to use a platform like Google Classroom to help you manage assignments digitally. In today’s tip, we will discuss 48 ways that you can use Classroom to manage student assignments.

  • Assignment Status – Easily check how many students turned in an assignment as well as how many assignments have been graded by going to the Classwork tab and clicking on the title of the assignment.
  • Assign to Multiple Classes – Post an assignment to multiple classes by using the “for” drop-down menu when creating an assignment.
  • Brainstorm – Use Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, or Drawings to brainstorm for class assignments.
  • Calendar of Due Dates – Link a Google Calendar with due dates for assignments, tests, and other important dates into Classroom.
  • Check Homework – Classroom makes checking homework easy with a quick glance at the assignment page. If more detailed grading is needed, just access the grading interface for the assignment.
  • Choice Boards – Give students a choice in how they demonstrate what they know by creating a choice board and uploading it as an assignment. Choice boards allow students to choose between several assignments and can be created directly in Classroom, using Google Docs, or with third-party apps.
  • Co-Teach Classes – Invite others to co-teach in your Classroom. Each teacher is able to create assignments and post announcements for students.
  • Create Questions Before a Socratic Seminar – Create an assignment for students to develop questions before a Socratic seminar. During the collaborative process, students can eliminate duplicate questions.
  • Detention Assignment Sheet – Create a detention assignment sheet using Google Docs. The assignment sheet can then be shared with the detention teacher and individual students privately through Classroom.
  • Differentiate Assignments – Assign work to individual students or groups of students in Classroom.
  • Differentiate by Product – Differentiate by product in Classroom by providing a challenge, variety, or choice or by using a continuum with assignments.
  • Digital Portfolios – Students can create digital portfolios of their work by uploading documents, pictures, artifacts, etc. to Classroom assignments.
  • Directions Document – Use Google Docs to create instruction documents for assignments in Classroom.
  • Distribute Student Work/Homework – Use Classroom to distribute student assignments or homework to all students, groups of students, or individual students.
  • Diversify Student Submissions – Create alternative submission options for students through the assignment tool. For example, one group of students may be required to submit a Google Doc while another group is required to submit a Slides presentation.
  • Do-Now Activities – Use Classroom to post Do-Now Activities.
  • Draft Assignments – Save posts as drafts until they are ready for publishing.
  • Feedback Before Student Submits – Provide feedback to students while their assignment is still a work in progress instead of waiting until submission. This will help the student better understand assignment expectations.
  • Get Notified of Late Assignments – Select notification settings to get notified each time an assignment is turned in late.
  • Global Classroom – Partner with international teachers to create a co-teaching classroom without borders where students can work on collaborative assignments.
  • Graphic Organizers – Upload graphic organizers for students to collaborate on assignments and projects.
  • Group Collaboration – Assign multiple students to an assignment to create a collaborative group. Give students editing rights to allow them access to the same document.
  • HyperDocs – Create and upload a hyperdoc as an assignment.
  • Link to Assignments – Create links to assignments not created in Classroom.
  • Link to Class Blog – Provide the link to a class blog in Classroom.
  • Link to Next Activity – Provide a link to the next activity students must complete after finishing an assignment.
  • Make a Copy for Each Student – Chose “make a copy for each student” when uploading assignment documents to avoid students having to share one copy of the document. When a copy for each student is made, Classroom automatically adds each student’s name to the document and saves it to the Classroom folder in Google Drive.
  • Move to Top/Bottom – Move recent assignments to the top of the Classwork feed so students can find new tasks more quickly.
  • Multiple File Upload – Upload multiple files for an assignment in one post.
  • Naming Conventions for Assignments – Create a unique naming system for assignments so they can be easily found in the Classroom folder in Google Drive.
  • Offline Mode – Change settings to allow students to work in offline mode if internet connections are weak. Once an internet connection is established, students can upload assignments to Classroom.
  • One Student One Sheet – In Google Sheets, assign one tab (sheet) per student for the student to complete the assignment.
  • One Student One Slide – In Google Slides, assign one slide to each student to present findings on a topic or to complete an assignment.
  • Organize Student Work – Google Classroom automatically creates calendars and folders in Drive to keep assignments organized.
  • Peer Tutors – Assign peer tutors to help struggling students with assignments.
  • Protect Privacy – Google Classroom only allows class members to access assignments. Also, it eliminates the need to use email, which may be less private than Classroom.
  • Provide Accommodations – Provide accommodations to students with disabilities in Google Classroom by allowing extra time to turn in assignments, using text to speech functions, and third-party extensions for colored overlays.
  • Reorder Assignments by Status – Instead of organizing assignments by student first or last name, organize them by status to see which students have or have not turned in work.
  • Reuse Posts – Reuse post from prior assignments or from other Classrooms.
  • See the Process – Students don’t have to submit their assignments for you to see their work. When you chose “make a copy for each student” for assignments, each student’s work can be seen in the grading tool, even if it’s not submitted. Teachers can make comments and suggestions along the way.
  • Share Materials – Upload required materials such as the class syllabus, rules, procedures, etc. to a Class Resources Module, or upload assignment materials within the assignment.
  • Share Resources – Create a resource list or a resource module for students.
  • Share Solutions to an Assignment – Share solutions to an assignment with a collaborator or students after all assignments have been turned in.
  • Stop Repeating Directions – By posting a directions document to assignments, the need to continually repeat directions is lessened, if not eliminated altogether. Keep in mind that some students will still need directions to read orally or clarified.
  • Student Work Collection – Use Classroom to collect student work from assignments.
  • Summer Assignments – Create summer assignments for students through Classroom.
  • Templates – Create templates for projects, essays, and other student assignments.
  • Track Assignments Turned In – Keep track of which students turned in assignments by going to the grading tool.

Disable Students Unsubmitting & Resubmitting Assignment in Google Classroom

  • Jason Huang
  • Last update: February 15, 2024

Google Classroom allows your students to unsubmit and resubmit assignment work after they turned in. While these are convenient features for students, they also burden the assignment management for teachers.

Take real world examples

  • Students can unsubmit completed work and share it to their classmates
  • Students can unsubmit and make changes to their test assignment even teachers only allow one-time turn-in.
  • Students can add, modify or delete the submitted documents and resubmit them to the teacher. This creates file management chaos for the teacher.

Unsubmit button in Google Classroom

This article demonstrates how xFanatical Safe Doc disables the features of unsubmitting and resubmitting assignments in Google Classroom. If you have not installed Safe Doc for your school, please apply for a 30-days trial .

Disable the Unsubmit feature

The Unsubmit button is available after a student turns in their assignment, regardless of the assignment deadline. When the Unsubmit is clicked and the action is confirmed, the assignment can be modified and turn in again. Students can make changes as many times as they wanted, although it leaves footprints in the teacher's dashboard.

Safe Doc disables the Unsubmit button completely. The Unsubmit button greys out and hints Unsubmission disabled by your administrator . Students cannot click them.

Safe Doc disables the Unsubmit feature in Google Classroom

Disable the Resubmit feature

After the teacher grades a student's assignment and returns the score, students can see the Unsubmit button turned into a Resubmit button. Students are also free to add, modify or delete the assignment work and eventually resubmit their work. The changes also propagates the teacher so the original graded version is lost.

Safe Doc disables the features of deleting existing assignment work (the x button), adding or creating new assignment work and the Resubmit button. What it means is students only can see a disabled greyed out Resubmit button, which hints Resubmission disabled by your administrator .

Safe Doc disables the Resubmit feature in Google Classroom

How to set up in Safe Doc?

First of all, you have deployed Safe Doc and read Safe Doc Configuration .

Turning off the features of the Unsubmit assignment and the Resubmit assignment are managed by two separate policies, BlockClassroomUnsubmitAssignment and BlockClassroomResubmitAssignment .

To enforce disabling the Unsubmit assignment feature, add and set BlockClassroomUnsubmitAssignment policy to true . By default it's not enforced if the policy is empty.

To enforce disabling the Resubmit assignment feature, add and set BlockClassroomResubmitAssignment policy to true . By default it's not enforced if the policy is empty.

Note the blocking enforcement applies to all students in the configured organizational unit (OU). It cannot be selectively controlled by teachers.

Google Classroom: 8 answers to common questions

Your email has been sent

Recently, teachers shifted classes from in-room to online as schools sought to slow the spread of COVID-19 . Usage of Google Classroom , which helps teachers and students manage assignment workflows, increased significantly.

The following tips cover a few key features of Classroom: How to find and complete assignments, access grades, and links to more resources for you to explore.

SEE: Coronavirus: Critical IT policies and tools every business needs (TechRepublic Premium)

1. What is Google Classroom?

Google Classroom provides a system for teachers to create, share, and grade classwork and for students to access and complete assignments. Classroom works with other G Suite applications, such as Google Drive, Docs, and Meet.

2. How do students access Google Classroom?

To access Classroom, go to https://classroom.google.com in the Chrome browser, then sign in with your G Suite account. You also may install the Google Classroom app on either Android or iOS (and iPadOS) devices.

3. How do students find assignments, due dates, or grades in Google Classroom?

In Google Classroom on the web, available classes display after you sign in. Click on or tap a class, then Classwork (from the top menu), then View My Work ( Figure A ).

how do you close assignments in google classroom

In the Google Classroom app on iOS or Android, tap a class, tap Classwork, then tap the student work icon in the upper-right ( Figure B ).

Each assignment is listed with its status (e.g., Assigned, Turned In, or Missing) and due date, if added. If available, grades also display on this screen, although some teachers and school districts use a separate system for grades.

how do you close assignments in google classroom

To view assignments that still need to be done, tap the three-horizontal line menu in the upper-left corner, then tap To-Do. To access completed assignments, tap the Done tab.

4. What other G Suite apps might students need for an assignment?

Check with your teacher to learn which apps you need. In most cases, students will want to also install one or more of the following apps in addition to Classroom on Android or iOS devices. To install any of the apps above, search the App Store (on an iPhone or iPad) or Google Play Store (on Android devices) for the name of the app, then select either Get On iOS or Install On Android to download the app to your device. In Chrome, the following links will take you directly to the app on the web.

Core apps, useful for most students who use Classroom:

  • Google Drive for files
  • Google Docs for writing
  • Google Meet for video conferencing

Other G Suite apps that may be helpful for many students include:

  • Google Calendar to track deadlines
  • Google Keep for notes
  • Google Slides for presentations
  • Google Sheets for spreadsheets
  • Jamboard for drawing

5. Can students work on assignments without an internet connection?

Students may work offline with Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides in Chrome, iOS, or Android. In the Docs, Sheets, or Slides mobile apps, go to Settings, then select Make Recent Files Available Offline. Students also may work offline with Google Drive in Chrome on the web: Enable the checkbox next to Offline in Google Drive settings. For more details, see Google’s support page to learn how to Work on Google Docs, Sheets & Slides offline.

When you have an internet connection, students may switch between accounts to access apps and files as needed. However, in general, only files for the most recently selected account will be stored offline. So if two or more students share a device, avoid switching between accounts when you know you will need offline access.

6. How do students turn in a Google Classroom assignment?

With the assignments list displayed (in Chrome, Class | Classwork | View My Work; In mobile apps, Class | three-horizontal line menu | To-Do), select or tap an assignment. Then, with the assignment details displayed, select or tap either + Add Or Create in a desktop-class browser, or + Add Attachment in the mobile apps. In some cases, you may need to tap Your Work to access the Add Attachment option. See Figure C and Figure D below, respectively.

how do you close assignments in google classroom

Select a file, link, photo, or document, as appropriate. Repeat the process as needed for as many items as the assignment requires. You also may add private comments that the teacher will receive, if you like. Select Turn In to complete the assignment.

7. How can a parent or guardian keep track of student work?

A parent or guardian may receive email updates about student work via Classroom. These daily or weekly updates include information about class activity, classwork, and missing work. Only a teacher, or in some cases, a domain administrator, may add a person’s email address in Classroom to receive these guardian email summaries . For this feature to work, a G Suite administrator must first enable it, and a teacher also must have guardian email summaries turned on for a class.

8. How can I learn more about Google Classroom?

If you or your student need technical help with Classroom, explore the support pages linked above first. Google provides a detailed set of support pages for students, teachers, parents, and guardians that cover all aspects of the service. Google offers additional information via Twitter , Facebook , and the Google for Education blog . Next, if your questions remain unanswered, ask your student’s teacher. At that point, if you still have challenges, contact the technology support team for your school.

Your thoughts?

If you’re a teacher, student, parent, or guardian that works with Google Classroom in some way, what has your experience been? Do you have a helpful Classroom tip to share? Let me know your thoughts and experiences with Google Classroom, either in the comments below or on Twitter ( @awolber ).

How to submit an assignment in Google Classroom, or retract a submission, on a computer or mobile device

  • You can submit an assignment in Google Classroom under the "Classwork" section on the desktop site or mobile app.
  • To submit an assignment in Google Classroom, you must first "View assignment" and then select the "Add or create" option under the "Your work" menu.
  • Links and Google Drive attachments, including a document, slide, sheet, drawing, or PDF file, can all be uploaded and submitted in Google Classroom.
  • You can upload multiple files, unsubmit assignments, and leave notes for your instructor in Google Classroom.

You've logged in to Google Classroom , have joined a class, and accessed class materials. Now, it's time to submit an assignment.

To submit an assignment in Google Classroom, you'll first need to navigate to the "Classwork" section. You can then find your assignment and attach your work.

From there, it's as easy as turning it in. Google Classroom also allows users to unsubmit their assignments if you need to make changes or leave a private comment for a teacher about the status of your work.

It's important to note that if you don't click "Turn in" after you attach your work, it won't be submitted. To verify the status of your assignment, double-check to see if it is labeled as "Turned in."

When submitting assignments to Google Classroom on mobile, you'll also need to make sure you have the iPhone or Android app installed. You can search and download Google Classroom through the app store on your phone.

Here's how to submit an assignment on Google Classroom.

How to submit an assignment in Google Classroom on desktop

1. Open your web browser and go to classroom.google.com .

2. Select your class.

3. At the top of your dashboard, choose "Classwork."

4. Click on an assignment, then select "View Assignment."

5. Under "Your Work," choose "Add or Create."

6. From there, click "Google Drive" to attach a document you've already created and saved in your Drive by selecting it from the file window that appears. If you have multiple documents, attach them all this way.

  • Note: You can add a link to a Drive document or attach a file from your computer. You may also start an assignment here by creating a new document, slide, sheet, or drawing on this page.

7. To leave a private comment for your teacher, enter it in the appropriately labeled text box on the right. Then click the small triangular "paper airplane" icon to post it.

8. Next, click "Turn in" or "Mark as done" to confirm your submission and change the assignment status to "Turned in."

  • Note: If your teacher has assigned a collaborative document that you worked on or another kind of outside assignment, you may see "Mark as done" instead of "Turn in."

How to unsubmit an assignment in Google Classroom on desktop

If you've submitted a document, but find that you need to edit out errors or add in missing content, Google Classroom offers a way to retract your submission. Navigate to the page you turned your assignment in, click "Unsubmit," and confirm. You can always turn it in again by following the above steps.

How to submit an assignment in Google Classroom on the mobile app

1. Open the Google Classroom app on your device.

2. Tap on your class.

3. Choose "Classwork" from the bottom of the app screen.

4. Select the assignment and expand the "Your work" card.

5. Tap "Add attachment" in the "Your work" card.

6. From there, click "Drive" to attach a document you've already created in Drive.

7. Tap "Turn in" or "Mark as done" and re-confirm.

How to unsubmit an assignment in Google Classroom on iPhone or Android

If you turned in the wrong thing or need to go back and add something to the assignment, you can unsubmit it. Navigate to the assignment, expand the "Your work" card, tap "Unsubmit," and confirm. You can always turn it in again the same way you did first.

How to Delete or Reorder Assignments in Google Classroom

Good news – you can delete or reorder assignments in your Google Classroom. Often when you are building a course or preparing for a class you can make a mistake – and then not know how to undo it. It is easy to panic, fearing that your students are going to see the wrong information. Or worse, you start to worry that things are such a mess you need to delete the entire class and just start over.

It may not be obvious how to delete or reorder assignments once created in Google Classroom . However, these instructions will guide you through the steps. If you have some time, it is also a good idea to read our recent article, Be Stress Free With a Google Classroom Test Class , which encourages teachers to play around before creating their first “real” class.

How to Delete an Assignment in Google Classroom

If you make a mistake and you want to remove an assignment, this can be done from the Grades tab. The Grades tab contains an electronic grading book that organizes class assignments in a table. It can be used to calculate class average, track student progress, and record grades…it can also be used to remove unwanted assignments.

IMPORTANT! If you cannot see any assignments under the Grades tab, this is because you have no students in the class yet. To resolve this issue, join a “fake” student to the class . Now you will be able to see the assignments.

  • From the Grades tab, click the  More  button beside the assignment you want to remove.
  • Select  Delete .
  • A notification states that any grades and comments will also be deleted. Click  Delete .

How to Reorder an Assignment in Google Classroom

The Classwork tab organizes assignments. It is best to keep the posts sequenced by due date. Sometimes, if you are building a course in advance, you might forget to create an assignment and need to add it later. Alternatively, you might be in the middle of instruction and realize your students need an extra review. Thankfully, ordering assignments on the Classwork tab is simple.

IMPORTANT! If you cannot reorder your assignment, this is because it is not listed under a Topic heading . To learn more refer to the tip below.

  • Select the Classwork tab.
  • Beside the desired assignment, click the  More  button.
  • Select  Move up  or  Move down .

delete or reorder assignments in google classroom

TIP – Categorize each Assignment by Topic Assignments can only be sequenced within a Topic. It is a good idea to organize assignments by Topic if you plan to teach multiple curriculum units throughout the school year to the same class. If your Assignment is not categorized by a topic it is not too late: 1. Select the Assignment. 2. Click the More button and select Edit. 3. From the right pane, select an existing topic or create a new one. 4. Click Save .

End-Of-Year Google Classroom Clean-up Tips

Even something as useful as Google Classroom can become cluttered and less efficient if we fail to manage it well.

how do you close assignments in google classroom

As the school year winds down, most teachers go through some sort of check-out procedure for their physical classrooms, making sure everything is properly organized or put away for the summer. In much the same way, you may want to do some clean-up and close-out steps for your digital classroom ... Google Classroom .

Google Classroom is a powerful tool to help you and your students collaborate and communicate, but when used year after year, it can start to become a bit of a mess and a management challenge. To help with this, there are several suggestions to consider for Classroom when wrapping up the school year.

See below for six steps that may help you clean up your Classroom as you transition from one school year to the next. However, keep in mind these are all just suggestions and each is optional. While some may not apply to your situation, hopefully several will assist you in keeping your Classroom organized, clutter-free, and efficient for a new year.

Tip #1 - Return all student work

One of the great features of Google Classroom is how it streamlines the process for turning in work. When a student turns in an assignment, Google automatically changes the sharing permissions on the file (or files), making you the owner and reducing the student's rights to view-only. This is helpful for grading, but you don't want to leave it this way.

When done grading an assignment you want to make sure to return the files to your students, so the ownership of the files will revert back to the students. This is especially critical if later you decide to clean up your Drive and delete old files. If you are still the owner of the students' work, when you delete it, you are really deleting the file. However, if you have returned the files, you are no longer the owner, so if you delete them, all it does is remove them from your Drive.

So, one of the first tips to consider is to make sure you have properly returned all the Classroom assignments to your students. One way to do this would be:

  • Click the menu button in the top left corner of Classroom
  • Choose "To-do" from the drop-down menu.
  • This will show you all of the assignments from all of your classes.
  • You can narrow it down to just one class at a time if needed by choosing a class from the "All classes" drop-down menu at the top.
  • For each assignment you can click on the "Turned in" link to view the student submissions.

how do you close assignments in google classroom

  • You can now look for any student work that is marked as "Turned in" rather than "Graded".

how do you close assignments in google classroom

  • Select those students, add a grade if still needed, and click the "Return" button at the top to return them to the students.
  • When done checking an assignment you can go back to the "To-do" page and move it into the "Reviewed" section by clicking the three-dots menu and choosing "Mark as reviewed".
  • Repeat as needed.

Tip #2 - Un-enroll students from old classes

Another possible clean-up step is to remove students from the old classes . This may be an option for you if you prefer not to have students accessing content from your class in the future.

For example, this could be for academic integrity issues if you do not want students showing certain course content to new classes in future years. Of course, no cheating-prevention solution is guaranteed, as students can always find many ways around preventative measures. Still though, it is an option that may help.

If you decide you would like to unenroll students from old courses , you can do the following:

  • Open the course and go to the "People" tab.
  • Check the box at the top of the "Students" section to select all the students in the class.
  • Click the "Actions" button.
  • Choose "Remove" from the drop-down menu.

Tip #3 - Archive old classes

When you are done with a class, a good way to clean up Classroom is to archive the old classes . Archiving is a process that:

  • Removes the class from your main Classroom home page (making your page cleaner and easier to navigate).
  • Freezes the class so no new changes can be made to it (especially helpful if you choose not to remove students from the old classes).
  • Still allows you to copy and reuse old posts and assignments from the archived class in your new classes.

how do you close assignments in google classroom

To archive an old class, do the following:

  • Go to the home page of Classroom
  • Click the three-dots menu in the top right corner of the "card" for the class you wish to archive.
  • Then click "Archive" from the drop-down menu.
  • You will now get a pop-up window asking you to verify that you want to archive the class. Click "Archive" again to verify.

how do you close assignments in google classroom

If you ever need to un-archive a class, you can do so as follows:

  • From the home page of Classroom, click the menu button in the top left.
  • Scroll down to the bottom of the drop-down menu and choose "Archived Classes".
  • Click the three-dots menu in the top right corner of the "card" for the class you wish to un-archive.
  • Then click "Restore" from the drop-down menu.
  • You will now get a pop-up window asking you to verify that you want to restore the class. Click "Restore" again to verify.

Not only will archiving old classes help keep your Classroom screen clean, but it will also help your students. As the students start back for a new school year, they will not get distracted by classes from the previous year, but instead can easily jump right into this year's content.

Tip #4 - Remove old class calendars

When you create a class in Google Classroom, and then make assignments with due dates, this automatically creates a Google Calendar for the class. This is a convenient way for your and your students to go to Google Calendar and see upcoming due dates for classwork and projects throughout the course of the school year.

However, when the year is over and the class is done, you don't really need that calendar showing up anymore. If you have a number of classes, they can quickly clutter up your calendar list. Thankfully there are a couple of easy options for removing the calendars for old classes.

how do you close assignments in google classroom

  • Go to Google Calendar.
  • You should see the names of your classes in the list under "My calendars" on the left side of the screen.
  • To remove an old class calendar you will need to access that calendar's settings.
  • Click the three-dots button to the right of the class name in the "My calendars" list.
  • If you just want to hide the class calendar from your list, simply click "Hide from list".
  • If instead you want to delete the calendar, click "Settings and sharing".
  • You can now scroll down to the bottom of the calendar details screen and in the "Remove calendar" section click "Delete".
  • This will open a pop-up window asking you to confirm the deletion.

Tip #5 - Move old class folders in Drive

Because Google Classroom automates the sharing and collaborating process, it is easy to forget what is actually going on behind the scenes in Google Drive. For each class you create in Google Classroom, a folder gets created in your Google Drive where all of the assignment documents and other files are stored.

Now you may never open that Classroom folder in Drive, so this tip may not apply to you at all. However, you may choose to browse that folder as another option for easy access to all your students' submitted work. If that is the case, the "Classroom" folder in your Drive can get pretty crowded over the years.

If it helps, you are allowed to move class folders to a new location in your Drive , so only the current class folders are easily visible. Here's how:

  • Go to Google Drive and select the "Classroom" folder.
  • If you do not already have a place to move the old class folders, create a new folder by clicking "New" and "Folder".
  • Name it something like "Archive" or "Old Classes" or such.
  • You can now simply drag and drop the old class folders into the new folder you have created.

how do you close assignments in google classroom

Moving class folders does not interfere with their use in Google Classroom in any way. It simply cleans up your "Classroom" folder to make it easier for you to find current classes, if so desired.

Tip #6 - Remove old class files from "Shared with me" in Drive

When files get shared as part of a Classroom assignment, sometimes the files will also show up in the " Shared with me " area of your Google Drive. If you have a lots of students and lot of assignments, this can cause quite a mess in "Shared with me".

Now I am of the philosophy that it is not really worth the fight to try to keep "Shared with me" clean or organized in any way. I tend to think of it as Grand Central Station and just accept the fact that it will always be a mess.

However, if you really want to clean up "Shared with me" you are allowed to remove files from there. So you may want to consider getting rid of old files from this year's classes.

First though, two quick but important notes :

  • Make sure you have returned all the assignments to your students first before you delete anything out of "Shared with me" (see Tip #1 above). Remember that you actually become the owner of a file when a student turns it into you. If you have not returned the file yet, then you are technically the owner of the file, and if you delete the file, it really gets deleted.
  • On the other hand, if you are not the owner of a file, and you delete it from "Shared with me" it does not really delete the file. It simply removes it from the "Shared with me" list. The file will still show up in your "Classroom" folders, even when you remove it from "Shared with me".

To remove a file from "Shared with me" do the following:

  • Go to Google Drive.
  • Click "Shared with me" on the left.
  • Select the file (or files) you wish to remove.
  • Now you can click on the "Remove" icon in the top toolbar (looks like a trashcan).
  • Or right-click on the file(s) and choose "Remove".
  • The file(s) will now be removed from "Shared with me".

BONUS: Delete Old Classroom Bookmarks

Here is an extra bonus piece of advice I got from a good friend. Sometimes we try to make navigation easier for our students my having them add a bookmark directly to our Classroom page, rather than the Classroom site in general. That can certainly help save a click or two on a day to day basis, but can become confusing the next year when that class is no longer active.

If you have a practice of having your students add bookmarks for you Classroom page, also be sure to have an end-of-year practice of reminding your students to delete those old bookmarks. Again, this will help for a much smoother launch in the new school year.

Google Classroom is a wonderful tool to help you and your students share documents, have discussions, access resources, and more. However, even something as useful as Classroom can become cluttered and less efficient if we fail to manage it well. Hopefully some of the tips shared above will be useful for you, and will help keep your Classroom running smoothly.

Grade, Return, and Delete Assignments

After you create assignments, they show up for students on the Classwork page. It's their responsibility to complete and turn them in by the due date. You can check the progress of an assignment on the Classwork page by clicking the assignment. This gives you an at-a-glance view of how many students have turned it in and how many additional students it's assigned to. When it’s time to review and grade assignments, you’ll do that from the Grades page.

Grade and Return Assignments

Here you see a table with each assignment listed at the top and separate cells to add a grade for every student in the class. If the assignment is past the due date, it displays as Missing for any students who didn't turn it in.

  • Click the More button in the cell where you want to enter a grade.

Create Assignments

The completed assignment opens in a new browser tab. You can add a comment to the file using the icon on the left side of the Files pane. Or, view the file in a new browser tab without any of the grading options by clicking the icon to the right of the file name in the Files pane.

  • Add a grade for the assignment.
  • (Optional) Add a comment and click Post .

Create Assignments

The dialog box notifies you that the student will now be able to view their grade.

Create Assignments

Once the assignment is graded, you can close the tab with the assignment to return to the gradebook.

Delete Assignments

If an assignment is no longer needed, simply delete it. Deleting an assignment removes it, along with any associated grades or comments, from Classroom. However, any files or attachments created in Google Drive will still remain. You’ll need to manually delete those in Drive if you don’t want to retain copies.

Be aware that deleting an assignment is permanent. There is no way to undo the deletion.

  • On the Grades page, click the More button for an assignment.

Create Assignments

The dialog box notifies you that any grades and comments associated with the assignment will also be deleted.

Kamala Harris: Everything you need to know

Vice President Kamala Harris speaks during a campaign event.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Kamala Harris’ life has been filled with milestones.

Her elementary school class in the 1970s was the second one to integrate Berkeley schools .

Harris was the first woman elected as San Francisco’s district attorney.

She was the first woman to be elected as California’s attorney general.

She was the first woman of color to be elected to the U.S. Senate from California.

She was first woman elected vice president of the United States.

Now, with President Biden announcing Sunday that he will step aside as the Democratic presidential nominee and endorsing Harris, she is close to becoming the party’s Democratic nominee for president.

The Times has been covering Harris extensively for two decades. Here is an overview of her story from our pages.

President Biden listens as Vice President Kamala Harris speaks.

California roots

From Oakland to Canada and back, with inspiration from India

  • Harris was born in Oakland to parents who had come to California to study at UC Berkeley. Her father, who has roots in Jamaica, was an economics professor; her mother, who had roots in India, was a cancer researcher. Harris spent several years as a child in Oakland and Berkeley, but after her parents divorced, she and her mother moved to Canada.
  • Harris has spoken of her Indian grandfather as being a key force in her life, and of her interest in government. P.V. Gopalan was an Indian civil servant on assignment in an era of postcolonial ferment. As The Times reported, “Until his death in 1998, Gopalan remained from thousands of miles away a pen pal and guiding influence — accomplished, civic-minded, doting, playful — who helped kindle Harris’ interest in public service.”
  • From seventh grade to the end of high school, Harris and her mother lived in Montreal and its Westmount neighborhood.

Harris earned her bachelor’s degree at Howard University in 1986.

In 2003, Harris serves lunch while running for San Francisco district attorney.

  • After graduating from the University of California Hastings College of Law in San Francisco, Harris passed the bar examination and worked her way up in the Alameda County and San Francisco County district attorney’s offices. Harris was San Francisco district attorney from 2004 to 2010.
  • Harris started dating entertainment attorney Doug Emhoff and permanently relocated to Brentwood by the time they married in 2014.
  • In 2016, Harris was elected to the U.S. Senate, leaving her California job to take office early in 2017.

Political beginnings

A prosecutor with an ambition for Bay Area politics

  • Harris got her start in Bay Area politics and law enforcement. She prosecuted murder, rape, assault and drug cases at the Alameda County district attorney’s office in Oakland from 1990 to 1998.
  • San Francisco Dist. Atty. Terence Hallinan had hired Harris in 1998 to lead his career-criminal unit. She ended up running against him and winning in 2003. The campaign was bruising, with critics citing her relationship with San Francisco’s colorful and controversial Mayor Willie Brown. Her record as a prosecutor included some progressive policies but other ones that critics would later say were too “tough on crime.”

In 2010, Harris moved to statewide politics, defeating Republican Steve Cooley for attorney general.

Kamala Harris and several other people look at a laptop screen.

  • As attorney general, she started implicit-bias training for law enforcement, and as district attorney she launched a program that enabled first-time nonviolent offenders to get their charges dismissed if they finished job training. Critics have faulted her, though, for working in court to uphold California’s death penalty, despite her personal opposition, her threats to jail parents of chronically truant schoolchildren and flop flops.
  • In 2016, The Times editorial board praised Harris for being willing to stand up for the little guy as attorney general. But it issued this warning: “Harris has at times seemed more focused on her political career than on the job she was elected to do. She has been too cautious and unwilling to stake out a position on controversial issues, even when her voice would have been valuable to the debate.”
  • Harris gained national attention for her efforts to have courts overturn California’s ban on gay marriage and allow same-sex couples to legally marry.

With Democrats dominant in California, it came down to a history-making battle between her and Southern California’s Loretta Sanchez. When Harris won, The Times declared that she tore “down a color barrier that has stood for as long as California statehood.”
  • In 2019, she began her campaign for U.S. president. Early on she built strong momentum, drawing a crowd of roughly 20,000 to a lavish Oakland rally. She raised $1.5 million in just 24 hours. She boasted a string of endorsements from California politicians.
  • But her campaign slowly sputtered. As The Times reported in March 2019, the fall “stems in part from Harris’ failure to present a compelling case for her candidacy beyond her background as a prosecutor, her buoyant personality and a deep contempt — shared by others in the contest — for President Trump.”
  • In December, she suspended her campaign. The Times called it a “lackluster end to an initially soaring presidential bid premised on the California senator’s personal biography and prosecutorial acumen. Ultimately, her run foundered with a muddled purpose, campaign infighting and an inability to sustain support from vital Democratic voting blocs, particularly African Americans.”

  • Biden locked in the nomination, but there was no guarantee he would pick her as his running mate. Some felt the Biden team was angry at her treatment of him during the campaign. But Biden ended up selecting Harris. The Times said at the time: “In many ways, Harris is a safe pick — broadly popular in the Democratic Party and well acquainted with the rigors of a national campaign. But her selection also carries symbolic heft in this moment when race relations are at top of mind for voters.”
  • Harris held her own during her debate with Vice President Mike Pence and serving as an effective surrogate. The Times reported “Those who have spoken with Harris say she sees the changes — in style, in her approach to campaigning, in the faces surrounding her — worth the goals she now pursues: replacing Trump with Biden and becoming the first female vice president in history.”

Vice president

Struggling to find her footing in a big job

  • Harris made history when she took office.
  • But her term has been marked by successes and struggles.
  • After her first year in office, The Times offered this assessment: “Harris has struggled to tell her own story, leaving others to fill the void. Conservative media have attacked her while mainstream outlets have published a string of stories about low morale and high staff turnover in her office. Like many vice presidents, Harris is learning how hard it is to define herself as a No. 2.
  • She was handed a difficult assignment in those early months: Leading diplomatic efforts to curb migration from Central America. There were early controversies, such as when she told would-be immigrants not to come to the United States . As the immigration issue has become hot in the 2024 race, Harris faces tough questions about her role in Biden policies.
  • Democrats worried about Harris’ lackluster poll numbers as they considered a leader of the party after Biden. “Harris has become a source of tension among Democrats, as growing worries over Harris’ political stature collide with concerns that any move to sideline her would alienate the voters needed to win elections and undercut the party’s promise of equity,” The Times wrote in 2021.
  • After the Supreme Court struck down Roe vs. Wade, Harris emerged as a leading voice in protecting reproductive rights.

Vice President Kamala Harris takes the stage near a man in a suit.

  • Barabak in early 2024 rated her this way : “Harris finally seems to have found her footing in a role to which she is accustomed and adept: prosecuting attorney.”
  • Harris has endured unprecedented levels of hate on social media. “Research shows that Harris may be the most targeted American politician on the internet, one who checks every box for the haters of the fever swamps: She’s a woman, she’s a person of color and she holds power,” The Times found.
  • Before Biden’s disastrous debate performance, Harris was still struggling to present herself as a successor. “More than three years into the oldest president in history’s first term, his understudy has failed to win over a majority of voters or convince them that she is ready to step in if Biden falters, according to polls ,” The Times reported in April.
  • Harris’ star rose as Democrats began to call on Biden to step aside and end his reelection campaign. She had remained publicly supportive of Biden, even as calls for her to replace him at the head of the ticket grew louder.
