New Garmin Navigators And More: Supercharged GTN 650Xi and GTN 750Xi

The two new multifunction units are available immediately., plane & pilot.

New Garmin Navigators

It's been just over a year since Garmin launched its a pair of multifunction touchscreen WAAS navigators, the GTN 650Xi and GTN 750Xi. The two are updates that bring a new interface and added features to the original GTN navigators, which Garmin introduced almost ten years prior.

When it introduced the GTN 650 and GTN 750 navigators in 2011, Garmin was updating the revolutionary GNS430 and GNS530 units, the two most popular aftermarket avionics products in modern aviation history. The 650 and the 750 covered much of the same ground as its predecessors but did it with greatly improved user interfaces, including, touchscreens, faster processors and built-in interfaces for more effectively integrating the units with existing components, both by Garmin and others.

The updates of those two units, into the GTN 650Xi and GTN 750Xi, are part of Garmin's multi-faceted update of its product lineup with the NXi branding. As is the case with other such updates, while the two new GTN boxes look nearly identical to the previous units, the similarity belies wholesale changes. In a telephone briefing on Thursday, Garmin told Plane & Pilot that the new units are much faster, have super hi-res displays and are built to connect better with other components and be easier to update, among other changes.

New Garmin Navigator

And despite all the improvements, the two instruments are about the same price as their predecessors, $12,495 for the GTN 650Xi and $17,995 for the GTN 750Xi.

Garmin also announced that it was offering numerous updates to its G3X Touch Certified flat panel avionics offerings, including flight logging and optional engine data logging, both features previously available with G3X Touch for Experimental Category planes. In certified planes, the displays will now automatically sync with the Garmin Pilot app to log flight data. Additionally, Garmin announced that new display pairings are available, so owners can put up to three G3X Touch displays across the panel, mimicking or outdoing the look and functionality potentially of even some of its G1000 NXi glass cockpits.

Yes, all GTN 750s are WAAS enabled. We do no provide avionics install services and you will have to go to a certified Garmin installer for the install.

Yes, the GA 35 WAAS GPS antenna is included.

Yes, the GTN 750 can certainly be connected to a Garmin G3X. You would need a GAD 29 to fully give this interface. GAD 29 enables your G3X to incorporate such advanced features as GPS steering, WAAS LPV vertical approach guidance and more. The GPS navigation data is provided to the G3X system via one RS-232 input and one ARINC 429 input for each GTN/GNS unit. The G3X system sends flight data and selected course information back to the GTN 750 via an ARINC 429 output. The G3X system uses an additional ARINC 429 input to receive VOR,localizer, and glideslope deviation from the GTN. The G3X Touch system can also remotely display and control the VHF COM radio, with them being controlled over the GTN 750 or their own front panel panels over the same RS-232 connection as navigation.

Unfortunately we can only sell this over-the-counter to experimental aircraft applications. Only a certified Garmin Install shop can sell and install the certified units into certified aircraft.

Yes, this is possible but you will p/n:10-04520 which is the Skyview ARINC Adapter.

This unit can interface with the GTX345R and the GTN will display traffic and weather from ADS-B IN.

All Garmin avionics products are warranted to be free from defects in materials or workmanship for the earlier of 2 years or 800 flight hours from the date of purchase for new TSO panel-mount products

Unfortunately, it cannot.

It would be best to use the GTX series of transponders that will work with the GTN.

Yes, this includes the mounting rack

Yes, this will work with the E5. This has a built in intercom.

Per the install manual the GMA 35C remote audio panel for GTN 725 / 750 mfr model# 010-00831-41, our part# 11-13825

The Garmin part number for the GTN 750Xi base unit is 010-02002-05.

Garmin GTN-650 Software Updates?

Question for you Garmin 650 owners...as this is IFR certified, can you do the update on your own? Or does an avionics tech have to do the update, and make a log entry? And is there a difference if this is installed in a C-310, or an RV-8? Not talking about NAV-DATA updates, but software updates.

I own several aircraft, one being a Cessna 150 with a full Garmin stack, including a GTN 650. I had to go to my local Garmin dealer just to see what the current release level of s/w was for all the devices. Then I had to pay the dealer to install the s/w on each unit. I was told that Garmin allows the shop to charge 1 hour shop rate labor for each device that needs a s/w update. Two G5's alone = 2 hours even it only takes a few moments each. Plus the GTN, the GNC, and the GTX. Keep Flying EXPERIMENTALS.

BobTurner said: I'm not a great fan of Garmin, however, the above statement is not true. Garmin does not "allow", require, etc., anything in this regard. And I believe they provide the update software to the dealers for free. Dealers are independent, and are free to charge as much or as little as they like. Shop around. If you've given the dealer a lot of business they may do it for free. My last software update, I got a "cash discount" (he took all the cash I had instead of running the credit card). Also be advised there are two sources for ifr nav data, Garmin and Jepp. Jepp is $150 more expensive. For a while they would match Garmin?s price (you had to ask) but not anymore. I guess I don?t understand their business model.

GTN 650 Software Updates I buy the IFR updates ($299/yr) and have no trouble installing them but want to be able to do the software updates on my RV-8. Justin the link you posted above does not work. Where is the software update page for the GTN 650 for experimentals?

Garmin was hacked this past week. Many of their websites and services are unavailable. There have been postings elsewhere that it was a ransom ware attack, but I have no direct knowledge.

GTN 650 I needed an IFR navigator so I chose the GTN 650. The only data base I subscribe to is the NAV database. The rest of my panel is all Dynon, 3 HDX screens, except the audio panel (PS Engineering BT8000). It costs me $299 a year for the Garmin NAV database. The other subscriptions are not worth having because I get them free from Dynon. If Dynon made an IFR navigator I would not even look at any Garmin equipment. It’s not that the equipment is bad. The problem is they plan on getting more for the software and NAV updates than you paid for the product over the life of the product. I expect to pay for the NAV data, but since distribution costs are close to zero the NAV data had got to be a huge cash cow for Garmin.

At the risk of starting a firestorm all you need in the plane are current charts. My current data in my EFB does that .. If I don’t update my GTN650 NAV Data I make sure the fixes and approaches in my out of date Navigator match that on my EFB. I also own Garmin Stock.
