Laser pointers are one thing you never think about until the moment you don’t have one that works. I personally  own this one  because it’s got everything you need, from the pen clip to volume buttons and slide control buttons. DinoFire has several tiers with different features, but you can’t go wrong with any of them. 

5. rOtring or Staedtler Mechanical Pencil

Mechanical pencils are an essential daily tool for researchers in STEM on the job and in the classroom. But in the new digital age, they often find themselves using touchscreens as well. 

That’s why my new favorite is the rOtring 800 Retractable Mechanical Pencil, (0.5 mm) . This one turns from a pencil to a stylus on the fly, and also ensures the tip isn’t poking holes in your pocket all day like most other models. Staedtler is another brand much-loved by scientists and engineers. This model is cheaper and will last a long time, but just isn’t convertible to a stylus. You can’t go wrong with either one.

PhD student accused of killing friend's baby faces death penalty if convicted

Pittsburgh prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in the case of a woman accused of killing a 6-week-old baby and injuring his twin brother in June, a new court filing shows.

Nicole Virzi, 30, a PhD student, was charged with homicide and multiple counts of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children. The charges stem from an incident in June when Virzi was babysitting the twin boys of a couple she knew in Pittsburgh.

According to a criminal complaint, Virzi called the police on the night of June 15, claiming that one of the twins had fallen from a bassinet. The baby, named Leon Katz, was rushed to a nearby children's hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The next evening, Virzi discovered injuries to Leon’s twin brother, including scratches, bruising and swelling. After the second baby was taken to the hospital, doctors found the injuries sustained by both twins were neither natural nor accidental.

An examination by the medical examiner's office revealed that Leon had suffered from a severe skull fracture and multiple brain bleeds, with the cause of death determined to be blunt force trauma to the head, resulting from homicide.

Virzi, who had been staying at an Airbnb property in Pittsburgh, told police that Leon was in a bouncer seat when she left the room to get him a bottle. She then heard the baby screaming and found him on the floor before she contacted police. Virzi also alleged that Leon's twin brother got a scratch to his face when she tried to put him in a car seat and he flailed his arms.

The twins' parents denied inflicting any injuries on their children.

The Allegheny County District Attorney's Office cited torture as one of the aggravating factors justifying its pursuit of the death penalty.

Virzi’s defense attorney, David Shrager, told NBC News that Virzi was close friends with the twin’s parents and maintains her innocence.

“This was not the direction we hoped the case would go,” Shrager said. “We strongly disagree with the allegations made by the DA’s office regarding the death penalty. We will of course be litigating this case aggressively until the truth comes out.”

Virzi was pursuing her doctorate at the University of California, San Diego. According to the university's website , she was studying behavioral medicine in the joint doctoral program in clinical psychology.

She is being held in the Allegheny County Jail without bond.

Pennsylvania is one of 27 states where the death penalty remains legal. Over 100 people remain on death row in the state — including just one woman — but no executions have been carried out since 1999.

When Gov. Josh Shapiro took office last year, he a nnounced that he would not issue any execution warrants during his term. He called on the General Assembly to abolish the death penalty, saying, "The Commonwealth shouldn't be in the business of putting people to death."

• What We Know About the Ph.D. Student Accused of Killing a Friend’s Baby

In June, UC San Diego grad student Nicole Virzi was babysitting one of her friend’s 6-week-old twins when she called 911. She told police that the baby, Leon Katz, had fallen from his bassinet and bumped his head. Leon was rushed to the hospital and later pronounced dead. Virzi maintains that the incident was an accident, but the next day, she was charged with homicide and aggravated assault. Prosecutors believe Virzi is also responsible for injuries sustained by Leon’s twin brother, Ari. If convicted, she could face the death penalty.

Here’s everything we know about the  case:

Who is Nicole Virzi?

Virzi is a 30-year-old fifth-year Ph.D. student studying behavioral medicine at the University of California, San Diego. Her research focuses on how “depression, stress, negative affect, and trauma” in vulnerable groups impacts physical health and behavior, like heart disease and exercise, according to her bio on the university’s website. According to her lawyer, she was a “longtime friend” of the twin’s parents and has no criminal history.

What happened to Leon and Ari Katz?

In mid-June, Virzi was visiting the twin’s parents, Ethan Katz and Savannah Roberts, in their Pittsburgh-area apartment. According to a criminal complaint reviewed by the San Diego Union-Tribune , Virzi says she noticed that Ari’s genitals were swollen and that he had blood in his diaper, and she notified his parents, who rushed the baby to the hospital. Virzi stayed behind to look after Leon, and later that evening she called 911 to report that he had fallen and bumped his head. Paramedics brought Leon to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead the next morning.

According to Virzi, Leon’s fall was an accident. She later told police that she had not strapped Leon into the bouncer chair — though CNN points out that Virzi referenced a “bassinet” on the 911 call — when she left the room to grab a baby bottle. She then heard him scream, according to the criminal complaint, and found him on the floor. Virzi told a 911 dispatcher that Leon was conscious but struggling to breathe. However, prosecutors believe she was responsible for the infant’s death. The medical examiner’s investigation found that Leon had a severe skull fracture and multiple brain bleeds, ruling his death a homicide caused by blunt-force trauma. Doctors who evaluated the baby said his injuries were “consistent with having been sustained as a result of child abuse, as these are inflicted injuries that are not natural and not accidental,” according to WTAE. Police said Virzi had no “plausible explanation” for the severity of his injuries, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette , especially since detectives noted that the bouncer chair was just 18 inches from the floor.

Prosecutors also allege that Virzi was responsible for Ari’s injuries. While Virzi told police that she saw Ari scratch his face while flailing in his car seat, the medical experts who treated the baby said he had scratches, bruising, and swelling on his face, belly button, and genitals — injuries they concluded were “unnatural and suggested abuse,” according to the Independent . Katz and Roberts denied any wrongdoing and told police that Virzi had been alone with the baby right before telling them about the genital injury and that they did not see either of their sons get injured. Neither of the twins’ parents have spoken publicly about the case.

What has Virzi been charged with?

Virzi has been charged with homicide, aggravated assault, and child endangerment. On July 24, she appeared in handcuffs before a courtroom filled with friends and family of the twins’ parents, where her lawyer, David Shrager, maintained her innocence. “My client is absolutely emotionally devastated for the family. Those were her close friends, and she’s in a great deal of pain,” Shrager said. He added that no one should jump to conclusions based on the available information. “There is a general misunderstanding of what transpired in the public,” he said. “And we ask that people wait until they’ve heard all the facts to resolve their thoughts on this matter.”

According to CBS, she waived her right to a hearing and plans to plead not guilty at trial.

Why might Virzi face the death penalty?

On August 23, prosecutors filed a legal notice that they will pursue the death penalty in the case against Virzi. To justify this rare move, the DA’s office cited four factors, including the fact that Virzi allegedly tortured a victim who was under 12 years old. Shrager told the Daily Mail he was shocked by this decision and that his client took the news “as well as can be expected.”

While Pennsylvania is one of 27 states where capital punishment is still legal, there have been no executions since 1999 and Governor Josh Shapiro has advocated for abolishing the death penalty. There are currently no women on death row in the state.

Virzi is being held in the Allegheny County Jail without bond. Shrager told the Daily Mail that Virzi’s family “support their daughter fully and completely, 100 per cent.”

France probes death of egyptian phd researcher reem hamed amid conspiracy theories.

The French authorities have opened an investigation into the death of an  Egyptian PhD student at Paris Saclay University,  Reem Hamed , that took place last week in the capital, Paris, amid conspiracy theories of possible foul play.

" The cause of death has not been officially declared yet. We have been waiting for the decision of the prosecutor-general as Egypt's consulate and embassy and the Egyptian community in France have been very concerned about the incident," Abdel-Hameed Al-Nakreesh, a representative of the community of Egyptians in France, told The New Arab .

No further details on the ongoing investigation were available at the time of publication.

But over the past 48 hours, screenshots of social media posts, reportedly made by Hamed, of her claiming she was being targeted at home and college which were removed shortly before her death on Thursday, 22 August, have gone viral.

"I, Reem Hamed, a PhD student in France, testify that I am in a dire need to inform the concerned security authorities in Egypt that I have been under surveillance and that my [electronic] devices have been infiltrated and above all I am being forced to remain silent and not to report [these violations]," she said in one of the posts in question.

In another post, Hamed claimed a neighbour had reportedly spread a mysterious gas under her doorstep that was likely to affect her nerves and kill or sedate her. In other posts, she said her food had been tampered with and that she was being followed.

Hamed said that the police did not take her seriously when she reported such incidents. Neither did the Egyptian embassy in Paris, she claimed.

TNA  could not independently verify the authenticity of screenshots in question.

On Sunday, the Egyptian foreign ministry released a statement that it had been following up the inquiry with the French authorities and for the family to receive the body the soonest for a proper burial service back home.

Activists accused the Egyptian government of falling short in protecting Egyptians abroad.

Hamed's death brought to surface memories of incidents of Egyptian scientists reportedly killed to halt their scientific pursuits, such as the legendary Samira Mousa , Egypt's first-ever female scientist and  Ali Moustafa Mosharafa  both dating back to the 1950s.

It remains unclear whether the field of research Hamed had been working on was linked to her 'alleged murder' as suggested by social media users. 

According to her LinkedIn profile , Hamed acquired a master degree in genomics and epigenetics in 2002 from the same university. She has been working on studying the regulation of gene expression in senescence.

Meanwhile, the deceased's brother, Nader Hamed, wrote a  post  on his Facebook page urging social media users to stop sharing posts attributed to his sister and consider him the only source of information. He had noted that his sister had died a few days after visiting her family in Cairo.

"The incident is being investigated by the French prosecution. No official report has yet been released about Reem's death that confirms or denies any criminal suspicions," Hamed posted, urging the public to be cautious about publishing any information that may obstruct justice or impact his sister's rights.

PhD student selected for 2024 TechWomen programme

North-West University (NWU) PhD student Happy Nsiza has been named a TechWomen 2024 Emerging Leader, a recognition that places her among 103 women selected from more than 6 000 applicants worldwide.

The TechWomen programme, which will take place in the United States in September and October 2024, is designed to empower women from around the globe in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

"I am deeply honoured to have been selected from such a large pool of remarkable applicants. Representing South Africa alongside incredible women such as Pindiwe Filtane, Dr Emma Molobi, Apiwe Hotele and Sarah McEwan is a privilege," says Happy.

Her journey to this achievement has been shaped by her agricultural background, where she learned the values of resilience and hard work from her family. These principles have been central to her work in planted pastures and rangeland ecology, where she has made significant contributions as a professional and a PhD candidate at the NWU.

Happy’s work is well-documented, with six research publications and numerous presentations at international and local conferences. Her focus on sustainable agriculture and pasture science aims to advance agricultural practices in a field that is traditionally male-dominated. "As a professional in agriculture, I am committed to challenging norms and advancing science in this field," she says.

Beyond her academic and professional achievements, Happy is also active in community engagement. She contributes to organisations such as Black Women in Science, the Association for Water and Rural Development, and the South African chapter of the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World, where she advocates for women in STEM and promotes inclusive opportunities.

Looking ahead, she is eager to participate in the TechWomen programme to broaden her global perspective and deepen her expertise in agri-technology. "This experience will expose me to innovative technologies and best practices, enabling me to implement cutting-edge solutions in my work."

Happy is also grateful for the support she has received from various institutions, including the University of Fort Hare and the NWU.

“Participating in this programme is an opportunity to further my mission of challenging conventions, inspiring others and leading with purpose,” says Happy.
