Deficient Critical Thinking Skills among College Graduates: Implications for leadership

Although higher education understands the need to develop critical thinkers, it has not lived up to the task consistently. Students are graduating deficient in these skills, unprepared to think critically once in the workforce. Limited development of cognitive processing skills leads to less effective leaders. Various definitions of critical thinking are examined to develop a general construct to guide the discussion as critical thinking is linked to constructivism, leadership, and education. Most pedagogy is content-based built on deep knowledge. Successful critical thinking pedagogy is moving away from this paradigm, teaching students to think complexly. Some of the challenges faced by higher education moving to a critical thinking curricula are discussed, and recommendations are offered for improving outcomes.

Global Critical Leadership: Educating Global Leaders with Critical Leadership Competencies

2012, Journal of Leadership Studies

Global critical leadership competency means espousing critical thinking skills in all aspects of leadership decision making in the global context. This paper reviews the actions of critical thinking, argues that global leaders too must lead critically, and draws attention to the deficiency of critical thinking curricula in higher education and subsequent lack of recent graduates with critical thinking competencies. Leading critically is defined as applying critical thinking skills to decisions about leadership actions in different situations and is a challenge for leaders, followers, and educators. Nevertheless, global leaders, stakeholders, and educators in global leadership programs must embrace this challenge in order to make informed decisions in global contexts.

"This study describes the development of a grounded theory of applied critical thinking in leadership studies and examines how student-centered experiential learning in leadership education bridged critical thinking with action. Over three semester undergraduate students in an upper level leadership studies course at a large four-year public institution in the southeastern United States completed a written assignment in which they were asked to define the concept of “leading critically.” A grounded theory of critical leadership – utilizing critical thinking skills to make decisions about leadership actions in different situations – emerged after completing a qualitative document analysis of these papers and incorporating the researchers’ existing knowledge of leadership and student development theory. The hope is that this research will create dialogue concerning new approaches to leadership education and encourage practices that apply critical thinking skills to leadership."

Many individuals and organisations face multiple but inter-related challenges and difficult choices. Addressing them may require the critique, review and resetting of aspirations and expectations, purposes and priorities, and goals and objectives. Over time, aspirations, expectations and what might be accepted or tolerated can change. Visions and values, assumptions and beliefs, and societal and environmental responsibilities may need to be questioned and current activities, operations and lifestyles challenged. If societal transformation is to be achieved, fundamentals might have to be reviewed and reset. Critical thinking, scepticism, an understanding of human behaviour and motivation, and an independent and questioning approach are important for business leaders, directors, boards and their advisers, and productivity and performance consultants. Responsible leadership requires the understanding and practice of critical thinking for assessment and decision making and in boards, committees and review teams. It needs awareness of pressures to conform and the courage to critique, including the critique of inputs to assessment and decision making. Retaining balance, a sense of proportion and willingness to focus on reducing negative impacts and externalities can also be important. Encouraging people to critique current priorities and activities, and consider less damaging alternatives, might stimulate contributions to sustainability. Critical thinking might initiate transition and transformation journeys that benefit organisations, their people, other stakeholders, the natural environment and future generations.

ABSTRACTCritical thinking involves an important set of competencies, skills, and behaviors that can be systematically developed and cultivated. Critical thinking is fostered within the Master of Science in Leadership Program to help students achieve higher levels of thinking through the program and also to help them improve their leadership acumen. The paper describes critical thinking, provides background on the Paulian view of critical thinking used within the program, and presents the approach used to infuse critical thinking into the curriculum.
