நாயகன் அஸ்வின், நாயகி வர்ஷா இருவரும் வசதியான வாழ்க்கை வாழும் ஜென்-Z இளசுகள். இருவரும் காதலைப் பறிமாறிக்கொண்ட சில நாட்களில், வில்லன் ராஜூசுந்தரம் கோஷ்டியுடன் சிறுமோதல் வருகிறது. வீட்டை எதிர்த்துத் திருமணம் செய்துகொள்ளும் அஸ்வின் - வர்ஷா ஜோடி வாழ்க்கையை மகிழ்ச்சியாகத் தொடங்கலாம் என நினைக்கும் பொழுதில் மீண்டும் வில்லன் ராஜூசுந்தரம் பிடியில் சிக்குகிறார்கள். வில்லனுக்கும், ஹீரோவுக்குமான முதல் மோதல் சாதாரணமாகக் கடந்துவிட, இரண்டாம் சந்திப்பில் வில்லனிடம் இருந்து மீளமுடியாத சூழலுக்குச் செல்கிறார்கள். இன்னொரு பக்கம் போலீஸ், வில்லன் ராஜுசுந்தரத்தைப் பிடிக்க வலை வீசுகிறது. காதல் ஜோடி தப்பித்தார்களா, வில்லன் கதி என்ன? என்பதை வழக்கமான கமர்ஷியல் ஃபார்முலாவில் சொல்லிப் படத்தை முடிக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் பிரசாந்த் ஜி.சேகர். 

ஹீரோ அஸ்வின் ஜெரோம் கச்சிதம். நன்றாக ஆடுகிறார், எதார்த்தமான் ஆக்‌ஷன் காட்சிகளில் பொருந்துகிறார். ரொமான்ஸ் காட்சிகளில் கொஞ்சம் சொதப்புகிறார். ஹீரோயின் வர்ஷா 'நஸ்ரியா' சாயலில் இருக்கிறார் என்பதற்காகவே, நஸ்ரியாவின் பல ரியாக்‌ஷன்களைக் கொடுத்து பரிசோதனை செய்திருக்கிறார்கள். ஆனாலும், தன்னுடைய ஒரிஜினல் நடிப்பைக் காட்டும் சில சீன்ஸ்களில், சின்னச் சின்ன மாடுலேஷன்களில் கவர்கிறார். 

ராஜூசுந்தரம் நடிப்பு மெர்சல். ஸ்டைலாக சுருட்டு பிடிப்பது, முறைப்பும் விரைப்புமான உடல்மொழியுடன் நடப்பது, கிரிமினல்களுக்கு உரிய தந்திரத்துடன் போலீஸை சுற்ற விடுவது. காதல் ஜோடியை ரசித்து டார்ச்சர் செய்வது... என நிறைவாக நடித்திருக்கிறார். ராஜூசுந்தரத்தை வில்லனாகப் பயன்படுத்திக்கொள்ளும் இயக்குநர்களின் எண்ணிக்கை இனி அதிகரிக்கலாம். படத்திற்கு இவர் கொடுத்த உழைப்பிற்கு வலுவான வசனத்தையோ, இன்னும் வலுவான சில காட்சிகளையோ வைத்திருந்தால் வேற லெவலில் இருந்திருக்கும். 

படத்தின் பெரிய மைனஸ், டப்பிங். பல இடங்களில் ஒட்டாமல் தனித்துத் தெரிகிறது. தவிர, படத்தின் பெரும்பாலான கேரக்டர்கள் பேசும் வசனமும், அவர்களுடைய நடிப்பும் சீரியல் தரம். பாடல்களில் 'நிலா...' ஓகே ரகம். ராஜூ சுந்தரத்திற்குக் கொடுத்திருக்கும் அசத்தலான பின்ணனி இசைக்குக் காட்டிய முனைப்பை, இசையமைப்பாளர் அச்சு படம் முழுக்கக் காட்டியிருக்கலாம். ஹீரோயின் ரொமான்ஸ் செய்யவரும்போது எதுக்கு பாஸ் 'மிஸ்ட்ரி' மியூசிக்?!. 

எதார்த்தமான ஆக்‌ஷன் காட்சிகள் சூப்பர். ஆக்‌ஷன் காட்சிகளிலும், வில்லன் - போலீஸ் சேசிங் காட்சிகளிலும் ஒளிப்பதிவு கவர்கிறது. எடிட்டிங்கில் இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் உழைத்திருந்தால், காட்சிகளின் தரத்தைக் கூட்டியிருக்கலாம். வில்லனிடம் மாட்டிக்கொள்ளும் நாயகன், நாயகி. அதேசமயம் வில்லனதைத் துரத்திக்கொண்டிருக்கும் போலீஸ் - நார்மலான ஒன்லைனாக இருந்தாலும், திரைக்கதையில் சுவாரஸ்யம் காட்டி 'நச்' அனுபவத்தைக் கொடுக்கும் வாய்ப்பு உள்ள கதை. ஆனால், திரைக்கதையில் வேகம் குறைவு. அதுவும், முதல் பாதிபடம் அதரப்பழசான காதல், காமெடி காட்சிகளாய் நகர்வது செம போர். தவிர இரண்டு வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு உருவான படம் என்பதால், அருண்ராஜா காமராஜ் செய்யும் 'ஹரஹரமஹாதேவகீ' காமெடி ரசிகர்களுக்கு கனெக்ட் ஆகவில்லை.  

வீட்டைவிட்டு ஓடிவந்த காதல் ஜோடியின் கதையைக் கேட்கும் வி.டி.வி கணேஷ், இருவருமே பெரிய இடத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் என்பதால் கொஞ்சநேரம் யோசித்துவிட்டு, 'உங்க அப்பா சொன்னமாதிரி நீ ஃபாரீனுக்குப் போயிடு, நீ உன் வீட்டுக்குப் போயிடு' எனச் சொல்லும் டைமிங் காமெடி ரகளையாக இருந்தது. மற்ற காமெடிக் காட்சிகள், ஆசிட்டில் பிணத்தைக் கரைக்கும் காட்சிகள் எல்லாம் பல படங்களில் பார்த்தாச்சு பாஸ். 

அறிமுக நடிகர்கள், அறிமுக இயக்குநர், லோ-பட்ஜெட் படம்... இந்தக் காரணத்தை வைத்தே இதுபோன்ற பெரும்பாலான படங்களைக் 'ஓகே ரகம்' எனக் கடக்கவேண்டி இருக்கிறது.

Yaanum Theeyavan Movie Review

Walking out of Yaanum Theeyavan (I am a Villain Too), directed by Prashanth G Sekar, I was still unclear about the kind of movie I'd just seen. At first, it looks like a launch vehicle for newcomer Ashwin Jerome, who plays Michael. He strums his guitar during college culturals and sings a song that's actually a proposal to Sowmya (Varsha Bollamma). They elope, get register-married with the help of friends, begin a life together far from their disapproving parents. So far, the film seems the love child of Mani Ratnam and Gautham Vasudev Menon — except for the animated bits where a cartoon heart jumps out of Michael's shirt pocket to depict how much he loves her. I'm glad there wasn't a sex scene, or there's no telling what would have jumped out of his jeans pocket.

Then we get a gangster named Pasupathy (Raju Sundaram) — charmingly described as a "psychotic sadist bastard" — whose underlings suspend a cop from a terrace by means of a rope, just so that Pasupathy can come by, slice the rope, and dispatch the cop to his death. We wait for the paths of hero and villain to cross, and this happens fairly early, when Pasupathy's men harass Michael and Sowmya, and Michael beats them up. Pasupathy is drunk, so all he can do is look at Michael driving away. He sees the license plate number. We expect a frantic search, an address retrieval, a mission of revenge worthy of a psychotic sadist bastard.

With better writing, Yaanum Theeyavan could have been something, but it's still not dismissible, if only because the director believes in using the camera to tell his tale.

But no. When Pasupathy runs into Michael again, it's almost by accident. In the meantime, we see Michael and Sowmya settling down to a life together. We see Pasupathy's interactions with another gangster, played by Santhanabharathi. And there's Jayaprakash (Ponvannan), a cop on the verge of retirement.

We're never sure whose story, whose point of view we are following. Is this the story of a couple trying to escape a villain's clutches? (Pasupathy eventually finds them.) Is this the story of Jayaprakash's attempts to track Pasupathy down? Or is this Pasupathy's story?

There's no rule that says a film can't be all three — but there's no focus, no tension to bind these story threads together. At one point, Pasupathy seems two steps ahead — he seems to be driving the plot. Then, randomly, Michael grabs the steering wheel. With better writing, Yaanum Theeyavan could have been something, but it's still not dismissible, if only because the director believes in using the camera to tell his tale. (The cinematographer is Shreyaas Krishna.) We learn how close Michael and Sowmya are to Pasupathy not through dialogue but a gliding camera move that connects the two locations. Given the generally abysmal levels of filmmaking in Tamil cinema, these small mercies aren't to be scoffed at.

Yaanum Theeyavan is Tamil Action Crime Thriller movie. Based on the number of true events. Michael aka Mike ( Ashwin Jerome ) and Sowmya ( Varsha Bollamma ) are lovers. Mike is a Martial Arts trainer and a singer. Their love life goes smoothly until Sowmya father fixes her marriage with a relative in Netherlands and arranges her higher studies there itself. After getting her relation disapproved with Michael the couple runs away and have a registered marriage with the help of friends.

Suddenly goons of Pasupathy ( Raju Sundaram ) who is a killer tries to misbehave and kidnap Sowmya as she is the only witness to the murder committed by Pasupathy. The goons get beaten by Mike and the couple runs away. Without wasting time angry Pasupathy tries all ways to find the couple. Men of pasupathy find them as his hostage and start torturing them. Can Mike and Soumya escape from the hostage? What happens next? Watch Yaanum Theeyavan see. .

Yaanum Theeyavan review: Ordinary story with underdeveloped characters

Michael (Ashwin Jerome) aka Mike and Sowmya (Varsha Bollamma) are classmates. Mike is good at singing and is a trained in martial arts. Over a period he falls for Sowmya and she also reciprocates. But Sowmya’s dad did not approve of her relationship with Mike as he has other plans. He wants to pack her off to the Netherlands for higher studies and eventually marry a relative who is well settled there.

Now, the love locked couple elope and have a registered marriage with the help of friends and they start a new life away from their parents. On one of their long walks, the newlyweds encounter a psychotic killer Pasupathy (Raju Sundaram) who along with his underlings in drunken state misbehave with Sowmya. Michael beats them badly, thanks to his martial arts training. Later the couple moves to a new apartment and it so happens that it is above Pasupathy’s abode. The same night Sowmya witnesses a ghastly murder committed by Pasupathy and now all hell breaks loose when the latter recalls the earlier incident. Without wasting time, Pasupathy takes them as his hostage and starts torturing them.

Meanwhile, Pasupathy is now a wanted criminal. A nearly retired and honest cop named Jayaprakash (Ponvannan) is entrusted with the job of bringing him to books. Each time Jayaprakash tries to nab him, there is a politician Sethuramalingam (Santhanabharathi) who comes to Pasupathy’s rescue. The rest is all about how Mike and Sowmya escape from him, with the former taking an extreme step in the climax.

Debutant Ashwin Jerome has the right looks of a hero and he is good at action sequences as well. He fits the bill. Varsha is just about adequate. Raju Sundaram’s voice works against his menacing character. Neither do the slow-mo shots help as well. There is no back-story as to why Sundaram turns a serial killer and also why he tortures the couple in eccentric manners and still wants them to be alive for a few more days. The problem with the script is an ordinary story with underdeveloped characters. The director could have infused more thrilling elements to hold the tension. The movie had all the potential to become an engaging thriller had the director concentrated more on a coherent screenplay with solid writing.

Achu Rajamani's songs and re-recording are a plus to the film. Cinematography by Shreyas Krishna also goes well with the mood of the proceedings.

Synopsis/Plot : This movie claims to represent a number of true events that have actually happened. Put together under one shell with imaginative screenplay and characters, the story revolves around 3 primary characters Michael (Ashwin Jerome), Soumya (Varsha) and Pasupathy (Raju Sundaram). The plot forms around how these 3 characters meet and what happens after their meeting. However the complete plot will be known only after the release of the movie.

film suffers due to generic writing

Much of the blame for this comes from the generic writing. It�s like the crew has set off to make a film without ever developing anything fully. Expectedly, the results too aren�t remarkable. It�s not the lead actors�it�s the audience that�s trapped. (more)

‘Yaanum Theeyavan’ review: film suffers due to generic writing

We expect this remarkably bland love story to turn into a thriller. but no such luck..

Calling Yaanum Theeyavan generic would be an understatement. It’s like calling Sachin Tendulkar a ‘decent’ batsman. Lacking specificity, here’s a film that would have worked just as well even if they’d name the hero ‘A’ and the heroine ‘B’. But the makers call him Mike (Ashwin Jerome) and her Sowmya (Varsha Bollamma, who not only looks but even acts like Nazriya) instead. The hero does heroic things. He’s the lead guitarist of the college rock band and even as he woos the college with his singing (and dancing with a guitar) skills, he proposes to her. Sowmya, expectedly, acts heroine-like. When she’s not busy depriving Mike of a kiss, she’s busy snatching cigarettes off him.

As a romantic couple, they do what’s expected of them… they canoodle during movies, hangout with silly friends and go on long walks. So when these two run into a deranged criminal, Pasupathy (Raju Sundaram), we expect this remarkably bland love story to turn into a thriller.

But no such luck there. It takes another half hour or so for the film to finally move along. The couple, now married, moves into an apartment just above that of Pasupathy’s. It’s where the film should ideally have begun. And when we expect the film to turn into a Saw-like thriller, it meanders even further with a lengthier sub-plot involving Pasupathy and the criminal-politician nexus. Instead of feeling the hopelessness of being trapped in a house full of criminals, we’re back feeling bored again.
