Emma Watson is returning to Oxford University this September, 10 years after she completed her first degree .

Previously, Watson attended Oxford during the 2011 to 2012 academic year as part of the Visiting Student Programme.

She took part in the programme while she deferred her degree at Brown University to focus on filming for the Harry Potter franchise, in which she starred as Hermione Granger.

The 33-year-old has now enrolled in MA in Creative Writing course starting in September 2023.

Her decision was revealed during an interview with the Financial Times , as she and her brother, Alex, announced the launch of their new organic, carbon-neutral gin.

Emma Watson’s Harry Potter body double says star wasn’t actually in major scene

Watson has reportedly remained closely affiliated with Oxford University through the years.

In 2016, the Beauty and the Beast star became a Visiting Fellow at Oxford’s Lady Margaret Hall. The role involved her being invited to attend debates and speak at the college.

Watson was a Visiting Fellow for three years, after which she was made an Associate Fellow in 2019.

In the FT interview, Watson explained her decision to step back from the world of acting.

“I wasn’t very happy, if I’m being honest,” she said. “I think I felt a bit caged.

“The thing I found really hard was that I had to go out and sell something that I really didn’t have very much control over. To stand in front of a film and have every journalist be able to say, ‘How does this align with your viewpoint?’

“It was very difficult to have to be the face and the spokesperson for things where I didn’t get to be involved in the process.”

Watson went on to lament that she didn’t “have a voice”, when being interviewed.

“I was held accountable in a way that I began to find really frustrating, because I didn’t have a voice, I didn’t have a say,” she said.

Emma Watson is to start an MA in creative writing at the University of Oxford in September.

The Harry Potter mega-star has already previously studied at Oxford . Watson was enrolled at Brown University, in the United States, to study for a BA in English Literature and spent the 2011- 2012 academic year at Worcester College as part of the Visiting Student Programme.

Harry Potter star Emma Watson stuns university students as she starts Masters degree

Emma Watson, who played Hermione Granger in Harry Potter, attended Oxford University's matriculation ceremony before she starts her Masters in creative writing

emma watson creative writing oxford

Harry Potter star, Emma Watson , stunned university students when she rocked up at Oxford in a black gown to celebrate starting her Masters degree.

The actress, 33, who played Hermione Granger in the best-selling franchise, looked delighted to be at the city's city's Sheldonian Theatre on Saturday for the matriculation ceremony, which marks students' formal admission to the university.

Sporting a long black gown with a black ribbon and a white blouse, Emma kept a low profile as she mingled with her future classmates. Speaking about clocking the actress in the busy theatre, one student said he was shocked to see the star, who is one of the most well-known actresses in the country.

Giving his reaction to seeing the actress, he joked: "It was the first time I had seen her in a gown since the Harry Potter movies," reports MailOnline .

Watson's plans to study creative writing were revealed in an interview with the Financial Times in April, in which it was reported she had begun writing poetry during lockdown as well as essays on love, friendship and relationships.

Further details were then revealed by The Sun last month, which reported the Prada star's studies would be part-time and mostly online. Speaking last month, a source said: "The course is for older adults and can be done on a part-time basis, which is perfect for Emma's schedule. She only has to be on site for four or five days a year because she can do the rest of the course online from home. Because she's a famous actress, she'll have a security team looking after her whenever she has classes to go to."

Emma spent a year at Worcester College at Oxford as an undergraduate in the 2011/12 academic year. This was during her English literature degree at Brown University in Rhode Island, US, from where she graduated in 2014.

Earlier this year, the actress opened up about her decision to take a step back from the limelight as she spoke of feeling "sad and p**** off" after rocketing to fame in the Harry Potter franchise.

Celebrating her 33rd birthday in April, she looked back at the last year of her life - after retreating from the limelight. Reflected on her time away from the world showbiz, Emma said she'd made gin, surfed, started therapy and started a women’s environmental investment fund.

In a candid post on Instagram , she said: "I stepped away from my life – I learned to surf (badly), I rode some horses (that went better), I did a lot of therapy (YESS therapy!). "My brother and I figured out how to make a gin using recycled wine grapes!?"

The actress continued: "I felt really sad and really p****d off about a lot of things. I learned more about love and being a woman. It took me three years but I have finally figured out a daily practice and can actually keep it for more than a few days in a row. I burned some things down. I eat green things now!"

MSt in Creative Writing

College preference

  • How to Apply

About the course

The MSt in Creative Writing is a two-year, part-time master's degree course offering a unique combination of high contact hours, genre specialisation, and critical and creative breadth.

The emphasis of the course is cross-cultural and cross-genre, pointing up the needs and challenges of the contemporary writer who produces their creative work in the context of a global writerly and critical community.

The MSt offers a clustered learning format of five residences, two guided retreats and one research placement over two years. The research placement, a distinguishing feature of the course, provides between one and two weeks' in-house experience of writing in the real world.

The first year concentrates equally on prose fiction, poetry, dramatic writing and narrative non-fiction. There is a significant critical reading and analysis component, which is linked to the writerly considerations explored in each of the genres. In your second year you will specialise in one of the following:

  • short fiction
  • radio drama
  • screenwriting
  • stage drama
  • narrative non-fiction.

The residences in particular offer an intensive workshop- and seminar-based forum for ideas exchange and for the opening up of creative and critical frameworks within which to develop writerly and analytical skills. There is a strong element of one-to-one tutorial teaching. Tutorials take place within residences and retreats, and relate to the on-going work produced for the course.

You will be assigned a supervisor who will work closely with you throughout the development of the year two final project and extended essay. All assessed work throughout the two years of the course is subject to one-to-one feedback and discussion with a tutor. This intensive, one-to-one input, combined with the highly interactive workshop and seminar sessions, is a distinguishing feature of the course.

Supervision

The allocation of graduate supervision for this course is the responsibility of the Department for Continuing Education and this role will usually be performed by the Course Director.

You will be allocated a supervisor to guide and advise you on your creative and critical work throughout the second year.

It is not always possible to accommodate the preferences of incoming graduate students to work with a particular member of staff. Under exceptional circumstances a supervisor may be found outside the Department for Continuing Education.

The MSt is assessed by coursework. In the first year, four assignments (two creative, two critical), one creative writing portfolio and one critical essay are submitted. Work is set during each residence and handed in for assessment before the next meeting. Feedback on work submitted is given during tutorials within the residence or retreat. In the second year, submissions comprise one research placement report, one extended critical essay, and a final project – a substantial body of creative work in the genre of choice.

You will be set specific creative and critical work to be completed between residences and handed in to set deadlines. Creative submissions in the first year must be in more than one genre. In the second year, submitted work focuses around the genre of your choice.

Graduate destinations

Graduate destinations have included publishing creative work in a chosen field, careers in arts/media, and doctoral programmes in creative writing.

Information about course fees

Course fees are payable each year, for the duration of your fee liability (your fee liability is the length of time for which you are required to pay course fees). For courses lasting longer than one year, please be aware that fees will usually increase annually. For details, please see our guidance on changes to fees and charges .

Course fees cover your teaching as well as other academic services and facilities provided to support your studies. Unless specified in the additional information section below, course fees do not cover your accommodation, residential costs or other living costs. They also don’t cover any additional costs and charges that are outlined in the additional information below.

Where can I find further information about fees?

The Fees and Funding  section of this website provides further information about course fees , including information about fee status and eligibility  and your length of fee liability .

Additional information

This course has residential sessions (residences and retreats) in Oxford. You will need to meet your travel costs in attending these sessions. The tuition fee includes the cost of board and lodging during the residences and retreats (eg for a four day residence, three nights accommodation will be provided). Further, as part of your course requirements, you will need to complete a research placement in the second year. For this placement you will need to meet your travel and accommodation costs, and any other incidental expenses. You may be able to apply for small grants from your department and/or college to help you cover some of these expenses. Further information about departmental funding can be found on the department's website. Please check with your specific college for bursary or other funding possibilities.

Living costs

In addition to your course fees, you will need to ensure that you have adequate funds to support your living costs for the duration of your course.

For the 2024-25 academic year, the range of likely living costs for full-time study is between c. £1,345 and £1,955 for each month spent in Oxford. Full information, including a breakdown of likely living costs in Oxford for items such as food, accommodation and study costs, is available on our living costs page. The current economic climate and high national rate of inflation make it very hard to estimate potential changes to the cost of living over the next few years. When planning your finances for any future years of study in Oxford beyond 2024-25, it is suggested that you allow for potential increases in living expenses of around 5% each year – although this rate may vary depending on the national economic situation. UK inflationary increases will be kept under review and this page updated.

If you are studying part-time your living costs may vary depending on your personal circumstances but you must still ensure that you will have sufficient funding to meet these costs for the duration of your course.

Students enrolled on this course will belong to both a department/faculty and a college. Please note that ‘college’ and ‘colleges’ refers to all 43 of the University’s colleges, including those designated as societies and permanent private halls (PPHs).

Harry Potter star Emma Watson enrolls in creative writing course at Oxford

Emma Watson, best known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movie series, has recently swapped her magic school, Hogwarts, with Oxford, as she has reportedly enrolled in a part-time degree course to study creative writing.

This comes four years after her last acting role that she took in Greta Gerwig's movie Little Women in 2019.

According to the Daily Mail, the Hermione Granger actress will have to attend only a handful of classes on-site, and the rest of the work will be carried out online.

According to The Sun , the Master's course is for adults, and it can be done on a part-time basis if someone has a busy schedule. The course requires the enrolled students to appear on-site for just four or five days a year, and the rest of the coursework could be carried out online from home.

According to the publication, Emma, being a celebrity will be escorted by a security team during her appearance in onsite classes, and university staff has also been warned that the actress will be attending classes with a small security team for her safety.

Emma is enrolled in a two-year course that features two guided retreats and one research placement.

Emma Watson has been spotted in person at a matriculation ceremony at Oxford University after signing up for a master's degree in creative writing.

The 33-year-old Harry Potter actress attended the city's Sheldonian Theatre on Saturday for the gathering which marks students' formal admission to the university.

Fellow students were delighted to see Watson at the event where she was wearing a black gown, white blouse and black ribbon just like the other women there.

Speaking to the Daily Mail's diary editor Richard Eden , one student joked: 'It was the first time I had seen her in a gown since the Harry Potter movies.'

Many students were said to have been taking or sharing pictures of the actress - who played Hermione Granger in the films - despite photography officially being banned.

There was also some surprise that Watson was there in person, given that previous reports had suggested that she would be mainly studying online for the degree.

Watson's plans to study creative writing were revealed in an interview with the Financial Times in April, in which it was reported that she had begun writing poetry during lockdown as well as essays on love, friendship and relationships.

Further details were then revealed by The Sun last month, which reported that her studies would be part-time and mostly online.

She is set to attend 'a handful' of lectures on site, with staff reportedly told that she would be present with a small security team.

It is also understood that she did have protection at Saturday's event, although they cannot be obviously seen in any photographs or videos.

Speaking last month, a source told The Sun: 'The course is for older adults and can be done on a part-time basis, which is perfect for Emma's schedule.

'She only has to be on site for four or five days a year because she can do the rest of the course online from home.

'Because she's a famous actress, she'll have a security team looking after her whenever she has classes to go to.

'There have been a few incidents recently and she is taking every precaution necessary to ensure her safety.'

Watson also spent a year attending Worcester College at Oxford as an undergraduate in the 2011/12 academic year.

This was during the course of her English literature degree at Brown University in Rhode Island, from where she graduated in 2014.

The Oxford University website states that the creative writing master's course runs for two years and costs £9,025 a year for UK students and £14,155 a year for those from overseas.

Watson spent much of her childhood in Oxfordshire, living there with her mother Jacqueline from the age of five and attending Dragon School and Headington School in the city.

Last week, the Daily Mail reported that Watson was cosied up to Syrian refugee filmmaker Hassan Akkad – an English teacher in Damascus turned writer and human rights activist – at a lunch in Mayfair.

Watson and Mr Akkad, who arrived in the UK by dinghy in 2015 following an 87-day journey across Europe, enjoyed a date at expensive Italian restaurant Cecconi's, where starters cost up to £23.

One onlooker said: 'They seemed very cosy.' However, Mr Akkad told the Mail yesterday: 'She's out of my league.'

Watson was seen embracing him during their lunch date, however, and he was later spotted carrying her bamboo water bottle – featuring her initials, ECW – as they left the restaurant and drove off in his Skoda SUV.

The pair have enjoyed a close friendship since 2017, when they met at a summit in Italy where they were both giving talks.

Watson previously dated Californian businessman Leo Robinton for two years. More recently, she dated Sir Philip's son, Brandon Green, for 18 months, but the pair broke up earlier this year.

Emma Watson Takes a New Path: Enrolling in Oxford University for Creative Writing after Break from Acting

Emma Watson has decided to further her education by enrolling in a part-time creative writing degree course at Oxford University, moving away from her magical days at Hogwarts. The 33-year-old actress, known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series, most recently graced the screen in the film Little Women directed by Greta Gerwig. The course she is undertaking will require her to attend a few lectures in person, while the majority of her work can be completed online. A source disclosed to The Sun that the course caters to older adults and can be completed on a part-time basis, making it a perfect fit for Emma’s busy schedule. Only a few days per year will require her physical presence on campus, allowing her to complete the remaining coursework from the comfort of her own home.

Switching things up: Emma Watson, 33, has traded in her wand for a pen as she’s said to have signed up for a part-time creative writing degree at Oxford University. She was spotted on campus on Thursday.

Given her fame, this actress will have a security team accompanying her to classes as a precaution. The university staff were informed about this arrangement to ensure her safety. The college charges £20K for the two-year course, which includes two guided retreats and a research placement. MailOnline has reached out to Emma’s representatives for a statement. Emma has been making fabulous appearances at various shows during Milan Fashion Week. Emma, who has been spotted with bodyguards outside her hotel, was reportedly targeted by Drew Barrymore’s suspected stalker recently. During New York Fashion Week, Chad Michael Busto tried to access Emma’s dressing room and was subsequently arrested. Authorities stated that Chad entered a dressing room at the venue, causing disturbance to make-up artists and models nearby.

Big break: The actress first found fame as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series (L-R) Rupert Grint, Daniel Radcliffe and Emma

The news states that he shouted, “I want to marry Emma Watson! Let me talk to her and take a photo with her!” as per court documents. It was uncertain if Emma Watson was actually present during the incident. Chad was later released from jail as the prosecutor mentioned that the offense did not allow for bail to be set. This development occurred shortly after Chad was released by a Southampton judge following his arrest for fourth-degree stalking of actress Drew. The incident took place when he showed up at the actress’s Hamptons home on August 23, just two days after confronting her at a live event at the 92nd Street Y.

Emma Watson studies on Oxford’s creative writing course

Emily Smith

Two lecturers at The University of Oxford who teach Emma Watson have won their case against the university after suing for unfair dismissal.

Alice Jolly and Rebecca Abrams were both lecturers on Oxford’s creative writing course which Emma Watson began studying in September.

In an interview with the Financial Times last year, Emma Watson revealed she was going back to university having reignited her love for writing during lockdown when she began writing poetry and a series of essays. She was pictured at her matriculation ceremony (where students officially enrol at the university) last year but has otherwise kept her Oxford student life private.

Her two lectures taught on the creative writing course for over 15 years and were employed on “personal services” contracts, which they claimed denied them key workplace rights.

Alice Jolly said: “Our course is so high profile that Emma Watson attends and pays £20,000. I myself won a scholarship to Oxford University and I have won some of the top literary prizes in this country.

“Yet I have worked for 16 years on a zero hours contract for teaching on this course and was dismissed when I complained. Where is the justice in that?”

But the judge ruled in their favour finding that they were engaged on fixed-term contracts of employment and should therefore be classed as employees. Rebecca Abrams said the outcome was a “vindication of everything we’ve been fighting for since 2018”.

She added: “Alice and I are skilled professionals teaching at one of the world’s top universities, yet we’ve been employed year after year on sham contracts that have denied us our employment rights and legal protections.”

“With nearly 70 per cent of its teaching staff on precarious contracts, Oxford is one of the worst offenders, but this is an issue that extends across UK higher education. Casualisation is a race to the bottom – bad for teachers, bad for students, and bad for universities.”

emma watson creative writing oxford

An Oxford University spokesperson said: “We have been notified of the tribunal’s ruling on this preliminary hearing and are currently reviewing it.”

The University College Union (UCU) general secretary Jo Grady added: “This is a huge win in the fight against gig economy working practices in higher education. Despite being one of the richest institutions in the world, the University of Oxford keeps thousands of academics on low-paid insecure contracts that leave staff impoverished.

“It’s completely unacceptable and it has to stop. This victory shows these contracts are often a sham and staff on them are entitled to the benefits of secure employment. Every employer in the sector now needs to pay attention to this ruling and begin working with UCU to move their employees onto secure contracts.”

Emma Watson had ‘unsettling feeling’ as she secretly suffered during the final few years of Harry Potter

Emma Watson had ‘unsettling feeling’ as she secretly suffered during the final few years of Harry Potter

The actress portrayed hermione granger in the franchise.

Emma Watson once confessed she ‘didn’t connect’ with the person she was whilst starring in the Harry Potter franchise.

Between 2001 and 2011, 34-year-old Emma portrayed the beloved muggle-born witch Hermione Granger in the film adaptations of J. K. Rowling ’s children’s books .

During her first outing in 2001’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone , the actress was just ten years old to Daniel Radcliffe’s 11 and Rupert Grint’s 12.

As well as acting in the fantasy projects, the trio were regularly present at press days and made appearances at star-studded premieres at London’s Leicester Square cinema .

In a 2017 interview, the Ballet Shoes actor claimed turning up at these events caused her to feel ‘unsettled’.

Emma Watson was just 10 when she first stepped out as Hermione Granger (Warner Bros.)

“I’d walk down the red carpet and go into the bathroom,” she recounted to Vanity Fair.

“I had on so much makeup and these big, fluffy, full-on dresses. I’d put my hands on the sink and look at myself in the mirror and say, ‘Who is this?’."

“I didn’t connect with the person who was looking back at me, and that was a very unsettling feeling,” she continued.

“I’ve often thought, ‘I’m so wrong for this job because I’m too serious’.”

Elsewhere, the star has previously revealed what Harry Potter scene was the worst to film.

Speaking during the Return To Hogwarts special in 2022, Emma admitted that kissing Rupert has been an extremely uncomfortable experience.

“Obviously us kissing was the most horrifying thing either of us have ever had to go through,” she giggled.

She added that it 'felt wrong on every level', and that they just 'kept laughing.’

Emma claimed attending premieres was 'unsettling'. (Warner Bros.)

Giving further insight into the moment, Daniel added: "I did not make this better, because I’ve been told significantly that I was just being an absolute d**k about this and was like, 'I’m gonna come on set and watch you guys kiss.

"I’m sorry about that, guys.”

When Emma’s time as one-third of the Golden Trio came to an end, she continued to work within Hollywood.

She has since starred in roles such as Nicolette ‘Nicki’ Moore in The Bling Ring and Belle in the Disney live adaptation of Beauty and the Beast .

Her latest film role came in 2019 when she portrayed Margaret ‘Meg’ March in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women before she decided to take a step back from acting.

Last year, the Paris-born star enrolled on a Creative Writing Masters degree at Oxford University.

She also possesses a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from Brown University.
