The MPhil programme in Nuclear Energy, offered by the Department of Engineering in collaboration with the Cambridge Nuclear Energy Centre is a one-year full-time nuclear technology master's programme for engineers and scientists who wish to make a difference to the problems of climate change and energy security by developing nuclear power generation.
This programme was created in response to the emerging nuclear renaissance in the UK and around the world. In order to realise significant nuclear ambitions, a growing workforce of nuclear-skilled people is required. As well as a thorough education in technical aspects of nuclear energy, the course includes a grounding in the wider policy environment in which nuclear energy sits. It is also a highly flexible course, so that students may tailor the degree to suit their backgrounds, needs and preferences. Some students choose to focus entirely on engineering, while others choose options with greater weight on policy, economics, management or finance. This flexibility reflects the wide and varied needs of the nuclear industry.
The course is designed to cater not only to students wishing to enter the nuclear and energy industries, but also to those considering career paths in areas such as nuclear proliferation prevention, radiological protection, nuclear governance, nuclear medicine and health physics. While the prime focus of the course is to equip students for roles in industry, there is also a substantial research element in the course which would prepare students for a PhD programme.
Learning Outcomes
The course will equip its graduates with a wide range of skills and knowledge, enabling them to fully engage in the nuclear sector.
Graduates will have developed a knowledge and understanding of nuclear technology. They will have received a thorough technical grounding in nuclear power generation, beginning with fundamental concepts and extending to a range of specialist topics. They will also be equipped with an appreciation of the wider social, political and environmental contexts of electricity generation in the 21st century, with a firm grounding in considering issues such as climate change, energy policy and public acceptability.
The programme will cultivate intellectual skills allowing graduates to engage with the technical, business and policy issues that the development and deployment of nuclear energy poses. These include skills in the modelling, simulation and experimental evaluation of nuclear energy systems; critically evaluating and finding alternative solutions to technical problems; applying professional engineering judgment to balance technological, environmental, ethical, economic and public policy considerations; understanding business practice in the areas of technology management, transfer and exploitation.
The programme will also develop transferable skills enabling graduates to work and progress in teams within and across the nuclear sector, including the management of time and information, the preparation of formal reports in a variety of styles, the deployment of critical reasoning and independent thinking.
Finally, graduates will gain research experience, having planned, executed, and evaluated an original investigative piece of work through a major dissertation.
Students will be able to develop and demonstrate the knowledge and understanding, skills and other attributes as follows:

Do you want to be part of the renaissance in nuclear energy and help mitigate climate change in the UK and around the world?
If you have a Good 2:1 Degree in engineering or a related science subject, the University of Cambridge can help you gain the knowledge and the skills to build your career in the nuclear and energy sectors.
The MPhil in Nuclear Energy, sponsored by the Cambridge Nuclear Energy Centre is a one year full-time nuclear technology and business masters for engineers, mathematicians and scientists who wish to make a difference to the problems of climate change and energy security, by developing nuclear power generation.
The combination of nuclear technology with nuclear policy and business makes the course highly relevant to the challenges of 21st century energy needs, whether in the UK or in countries across the globe.
Applications should be submitted through the Postgraduate Admissions website https://www.postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/directory/egegmpmne from the middle of September until the middle of May each year.
There is a range of funding opportunities usually through competitive scholarships and bursaries, for post-graduate students. These are described on the Postgraduate Admissions website. In addition, there are some scholarships (worth up to £7,000 each) specifically for Nuclear Energy candidates from the UK (see ‘ How to Apply’ ).

Career opportunities
Undertaking aPhD in mechanical, aerospace and civil engineering is both challenging and rewarding. Not only does it provide you with the opportunity to strengthen your research ability but it will also help you to develop a much wider range of skills, required to develop your career in business and industry or in research and an academic environment.
Graduates from the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering leave with a breadth of strong technical and inter-personal skills and expertise far beyond their particular degree specialism. They progress into a wide variety of careers within engineering (e.g. consulting engineers, R&D companies, construction sector) academia, public services (e.g. civil service, policy change) and commerce (e.g. IT, finance). The acquisition of a PhD degree provides a significant career acceleration and facilitates entry into positions with greater responsibility and diverse opportunities. Furthermore, it increasingly provides entrepreneurial opportunities, exploiting skills and knowledge acquired during the programme.

NDA announces multi-million PhD bursary commitment at summit
At the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority biannual stakeholder summit, CEO David Peattie announced up to £5 million over five years to support around 20 PhDs.

On the 17th and 18th of September the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) hosted its biannual in person stakeholder summit, bringing together over 170 delegates from national and local government, the nuclear sector and site communities.
The event, which took place in Manchester, was an opportunity to showcase the progress the NDA group is making in delivering its mission and highlight how its utilising strategic partnerships to deliver a wealth of benefits, for both site communities and the UK as a whole.
This includes the NDA group investing £60 million of socio-economic funding over five years in projects which enable permanent and sustainable change in site communities and £45 million annually in early careers, including apprenticeship, graduate and PhD programmes.
At the event NDA Group CEO, David Peattie, announced a further investment of up to £5 million over the next five years to support around 20 PhDs, contributing the NDA’s nationally important plutonium disposition strategy work.
In his keynote speech he also said:
Our success hinges on maintaining a social licence to operate, which is built through productive relationships with our stakeholders, including our site communities. As we look to the future, our commitment to your communities remains strong. We’ll continue to foster strong partnerships and ensure that our operations contribute positively to the social and economic well-being of the regions we serve.

The event, an exciting mix of debate, discussion and networking, was the most inclusive yet, giving a platform to a wide range of perspectives from across the breadth of the nuclear decommissioning landscape and related fields.
Clive Maxwell CBE, Second Permanent Secretary at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, gave an oversight of the priorities of the new government and the critical role the NDA group and wider nuclear sector play in securing greater energy independence, achieving net zero targets and galvanising economic growth.
For example, in relation to development of a Geological Disposal Facility he said:
GDF will ensure safe, cost-effective disposal of radioactive waste and bring economic benefits to host communities. It’s a multi-billion-pound investment expected to create over 4,000 jobs in 25 years and sustain 2,000 jobs annually for 175 years.
Sir Alex Chisholm, EDF’s UK Chair, spoke about EDF’s role in helping Britain to achieve net zero and supporting the government’s mission to make the nation a clean energy superpower. He reflected:
There is plenty to do if we are to deliver energy security, meet the target for net zero, deliver growth and jobs, and realise the full potential of nuclear – people and partnerships will be at the heart of that.

There were also plenary sessions debating a range of topics including developing partnerships, building community engagement, maximising value and accelerating delivery of the NDA group’s mission.
Delegates were also able to access an interactive exhibition area with live demonstrations of some of the cutting-edge technology and robotics developed by the NDA group and its partners being used to deliver the mission more efficiently and effectively, moving people further away from potential hazards.

The NDA is tasked with decommissioning the UK’s earliest nuclear sites safely, sustainably and securely.
What makes the mission unique is the requirement to consider the impact of decommissioning on communities, the local economy, job creation, environmental protection and skills investment.
This annual event is an important fixture in the NDA group’s calendar of stakeholder engagement activity. Effective stakeholder engagement is crucial in maintaining trust, confidence, and support.
