Are Telstra business plans worth it?

Telstra offers three business mobile plans, each is payable upfront:

  • Basic: $62 per month for 50GB (capped data download speed of 250Mbps)
  • Essential: $72 per month for 180GB
  • Premium: $95 per month for 300GB

Download speeds are uncapped within your plan’s monthly data allowance, and customers can add up to five bundle plans.  All Telstra business mobile plans come with following calls and texts:

  • Unlimited calls, SMS and MMS to standard Australian numbers
  • 30 minutes calls to standard international numbers
  • Unlimited SMS and MMS to standard international numbers

All Telstra business mobile plans also come with:

  • No lock-in contracts: Cancel any time or change plans on a month-to-month basis
  • Data sharing: Shared data across up to 20 mobile plans on same account
  • No excess data charges in Australia: Speeds slowed if you exceed data allowance
  • 24/7 network surveillance
  • Choice of eSIM or physical SIM
  • Ability to earn Telstra Plus Points

Telstra business plans also offer a service unavailable to regular customers: the ability to pay extra for premium numbers. Premium numbers include sequences of numbers (e.g. 234 567), pairs of numbers (e.g. 14 14, 14), or triple sets (e.g. 319 319) that are easy to remember. A premium number is a useful marketing tool, as it helps customers remember a business’ contact details.

Telstra offers a range of phones available to buy outright, or via interest-free instalments over 12, 24 and 36 months on a chosen business plan.

Phones on offer include the latest models from Apple, CAT, Google, Motorola, Nokia, OPPO and Samsung.

How do Telstra business plans compare to Optus and Vodafone?

Vodafone and  Optus also both offer a range of business mobile phone plans:

Vodafone business mobile plans

Vodafone offers Small, Medium and Large plans, with prices beginning from $49 per month. Vodafone’s Team Plan allows up to nine additional plans to be added onto one primary service connected to a Vodafone business account, available with or without a phone. All Vodafone plans offer no locked-in contracts, unlimited standard national calls and texts, and unlimited standard international texts. Medium and Large plans also offer international calls.

The max speed data allowances on the primary service and team plans combine into one pool to be shared between all users. No excess data charges apply, instead speeds are slowed to 2Mbps once the plans’ data cap is reached.

For more than ten connections, Vodafone offers Business Flex Plans, which are tailored to a business’ individual requirements by a Vodafone personal account manager.

Optus business mobile plans

Optus offers three small business mobile plans, including Small, Medium and Large options with prices from $52 monthly. All three plans offer no locked-in contracts and unlimited standard national calls and texts. The Medium and Large plans also offer international calls and texts.

The max speed data allowances on Business Choice plans combine into one pool to be shared between all users. No excess data charges apply, instead speeds are slowed to 1.5Mbps once the plans’ data cap is reached.

Optus also offers a four SIM Business Teams Plus Plan, which includes 320GB of data to share between four lines and the option to add additional SIMs. For larger companies, Optus offers Business Fund plans, which feature device credits, and are tailored to a business’ individual requirements by an Optus business consultant.

Ultimately, choosing the right mobile plan for a small business comes down to the number of phone plans required, and the firm’s data, phone-call and messaging needs.

Overall, while Telstra’s basic business mobile plans are not the cheapest in the market, and don’t offer the most data, they do come with the support of one of Australia’s leading telecommunications companies.

As Australia's largest provider, it should come as no surprise that Telstra's mobile coverage is unmatched. Apart from boasting the country's largest 5G network, Telstra also offers great options for those after huge amounts of data. That said, Telstra is easily the priciest major telco in Australia, and its entry-level plans aren't great value.

As Australia's leading telecommunications provider, Telstra undoubtedly offers the most reliable mobile network in the country, not to mention the widest coverage, with its 5G network now reaching 85% of Aussies.

Telstra also provides a number of wide-ranging mobile plan options, from options which include a handset, to pre-paid and post-paid SIM-only choices for those who already have a device.

And while off-shore customer service has long been a thorn in the side of the average Telstra customer, we were pleased to discover that this has improved over the last couple of years — as of mid-2022, Telstra's support team now mostly consists of remote workers within Australia , making it easier for Aussies to communicate their issues over the phone.

That said, Telstra's premium service comes at a significant cost, with plans that are generally more expensive than the competition — particularly at the entry level. 

For the price, you do get the most consistent download speeds of any 5G mobile network in Australia (although Optus has taken OpenSignal's 5G Download Speed award for the last 4 years straight), along with huge amounts of data on the higher-priced plans.

It's also worth noting that while an internal error saw Telstra accidentally leak the personal data of some customers in the past , the company has never been the victim of a cyberattack — a claim that its biggest rival, Optus, cannot make after suffering a massive data breach in 2022.

When it comes to pricing, there's no denying that Telstra's plans are among the most expensive you can sign up for in Australia. Of course, value for money is subjective, and some may consider Telstra's high prices worth paying for the best coverage in Australia.

Telstra offers its own take on SIM-only plans, dubbed 'Upfront' plans, which are named as such because they are charged ahead of time as opposed to after the fact. Thankfully, there are no lock-in contracts for any of the Upfront plans, and users can switch to another Telstra plan once a month if they find their needs have changed.

Telstra's Upfront plans start at AU$62 p/m for its Basic plan, which offers 50GB of monthly data with download speeds capped at 250Mbps. Next, Telstra's Essential plan grants users 180GB of monthly data at uncapped speeds for AU$72 p/m. 

Call us crazy, but we'd argue that there's an unreasonable gulf between the Basic and Essential plan in terms of value — the fact that only 10 bucks separates plans with 50GB of data at capped speeds and 180GB of data at uncapped speeds is honestly mind-boggling.

Rounding things out, Telstra's third and final Upfront plan offers 300GB of monthly data at uncapped speeds for AU$95 p/m. Included with each Upfront plan are unlimited calls and texts to standard Australian numbers, 30 minutes of calls to standard international numbers and unlimited texts to standard international numbers.

For the sake of comparison, Telstra's nearest competitor, Optus, offers significantly better value with its SIM-only plans — its AU$62 p/m Medium Optus Choice Plus Plan  is the same price as Telstra's entry-level Basic (50GB) offering, only with 130GB of additional monthly data and with uncapped 5G download speeds.

Alternatively, Telstra also offers a range of pre-paid SIM starter kits for new customers, starting from AU$12 for 3GB of data and a 7-day expiry. 

We can't see any Australian residents choosing this option, so we'll skip ahead to the AU$35 starter kit, which has a 28-day expiry period and offers 35GB of monthly data for the first 3 months. After this, the limit drops down to 15GB.

Next, you have a AU$45 starter kit which provides 50GB of monthly data for the first 3 months, after which it drops to 25GB. From here on, Telstra's SIM starter kits are for 6 and 12-month expiry periods.

Please note, while all of Telstra's pre-paid SIM starter kits offer access to the telco's 4G and 5G networks, download speeds are capped to 150Mbps.

Telstra mobile coverage

  • Telstra has the widest reach of the three major telcos
  • Optus still holds award for fastest 5G download speeds

As we mentioned earlier, Telstra has the largest reach in Australia when it comes to coverage, with its 5G network now reaching around 87% of Australians as of February 2024 . 

That's an impressive number, and we have to assume it's still a substantial lead over Optus and Vodafone — both of which haven't yet divulged percentage figures for their Aussie 5G coverage.

But while Telstra's 5G network has the best coverage, it can't claim to be the fastest in Australia — that honour goes to Optus, which has won OpenSignal's 5G Download Speed award for the last four years in a row.

Of course, those speeds were achieved under very specific circumstances and don't necessarily reflect real-world usage for most Aussies. In fact, OpenSignal still acknowledges Telstra as the "outright winner" when it comes to 5G reach and overall reliability.

When it comes to the reach of its older 3G and 4G networks, Telstra again takes the crown for widest coverage, claiming to reach 99.6% of the Australian population. Optus isn't far behind however, and states its 3G and 4G networks cover 98.5% of the population. Things get a bit fuzzier when it comes to Vodafone. The latter claims its networks reach 96% of the 'metropolitan' population, which is quite different from Telstra and Optus's statements, which imply the Australian population as a whole.

Telstra mobile plans: Extras, perks and offers

  • Telstra Plus members earn points to spend in Telstra Rewards store
  • Telstra Personal customers get bonus streaming offers

All Telstra customers have the option of signing up to Telstra Plus — a rewards program that's free to join if you have a Telstra ID account and are paying for an eligible Telstra mobile or internet service.

Telstra Plus membership comes in four tiers depending on your annual spend with the telco. The entry-level tier is Member, which gets benefits like discounted tickets to movies, concerts and sporting events. Next is Silver, which gets the same, along with extra customer service attention in the My Telstra app, and 25% off points used to buy content on Telstra TV. Gold goes one step further, adding VIP customer service in the My Telstra app and Gold early access to concert pre-sales. Finally, there is the Business tier, which is reserved for businesses and offers similar value to the Member tier.

Every dollar spent on one of Telstra's eligible services also gets you Telstra Points, which can be spent in the Telstra Rewards Store. These points can be used to redeem anything from a USB charging cable, to a new iPhone. Of course, you'll need to spend upwards of 500,000 points to get your hands on the latter.

Additionally, Telstra Personal customers (excluding pre-paid) also get a range of entertainment offers, including 4 months of Spotify Premium, 2 months of Binge, 3 months of Flash, 14-days of Kayo and a month of Foxtel Now — so long as you sign up via Telstra.

Telstra mobile plans: customer service and community reviews

  • Support team now almost entirely based within Australia
  • Mostly negative online reviews from customers

As we mentioned earlier, Telstra's customer service received a massive upgrade in quality starting around mid-2022, with the telco drastically reducing its use of off-shore call centres in favour of a new local support team. 

When Telstra customers phone customer service now, they'll more than likely end up speaking to a support agent based locally in Australia, rather than someone overseas — a move which should minimise communication barriers.

Alternatively, customers who'd rather solve their account or service-related issues in person also have the option of visiting a Telstra retail store for face-to-face support. Telstra's retail network consists of around 270 stores across Australia, including independent licensees (in 2021, Telstra announced it would be shaking up its retail store network, with major changes expected by 2025).

Of course, not all Telstra customers are happy — the telco has received overwhelmingly negative online reviews from customers on sites like Product Review and Trustpilot , earning a score of 1.4 stars out of 5 on the former, and 1.3 stars out of 5 on the latter. 

Before you get your pitchfork out, it's worth noting that Optus and Vodafone have both received similar scores on the same sites. All those ratings are likely skewed by the fact that many customers only bother reviewing a service when they've had a bad experience, resulting in a score that's biased towards the negative, and doesn't necessarily reflect the opinion of most customers.

Furthermore, the consumer advocacy group Choice awarded Telstra as the Best SIM + handset phone plan provider in Australia last year.

Telstra mobile plans: Bottom line

Is a Telstra mobile plan worth your money? There's no denying that Telstra offers the most premium service of the three major telcos in Australia, boasting not only the largest 5G network, but also the most reliable and wide-reaching coverage. It also provides a sense of safety and dependability when it comes to your private data, as Telstra's cybersecurity has never been breached.

On top of this, Telstra has recently taken steps to radically improve its customer service, which has to be commended. Telstra Plus customers also get access to some nice benefits, including event discounts and points which can be redeemed on a variety of goodies.

But does the quality of its service justify its high pricing? All of Telstra's Upfront plans are far more expensive than equivalent offerings from other telcos, offering less monthly data for more money in every instance — particularly at the entry level. It's also worth noting that not everyone will care about the perks and extras that come with a Telstra Plus membership.

If you value reliability above all else, a Telstra mobile plan is likely your best option. However, if you're after value for money, you'll be better off choosing a plan from a Telstra network reseller , or alternatively opting for an Optus mobile plan .

If you're running a business with multiple employees that need work numbers, it makes sense to look at getting a business mobile plan to make it easier for organisational or tax purposes.

They have different inclusions to personal mobile plans because people tend to use their phones differently for business than they would for recreation.

Business plans are also designed for lots of employees to share inclusions.

They also often have better access to support , because the consequences of a business phone being down are much harsher than that of a personal phone.

  • Keep in mind: SME's and larger enterprises reap the most rewards with a business mobile plan. Business phone plans won't really benefit sole traders (depending on how you handle tax).

Depending on the size of your business, a mobile plan specifically designed for work may or may not benefit your organisation.

  • Designed specifically for business. Many also allow you to tailor the plans specifically to suit your business needs. For example, if you need international call inclusions to keep in touch with international clients, or have multiple employees who can share a data pool.
  • Lots of options available. Businesses come in so many different flavours – a cheese factory and game development studio would have vastly different calling and data needs, so providers have plenty of options to make sure you get the right plan.
  • Extra value. Because most businesses are signing up for a bunch of mobile plans at once, providers will often kick in extra perks like international call inclusions, or discounts.
  • Cost and contracts. These plans tend to be more expensive than regular mobile plans and often have long contracts. Think carefully about whether a business plan or a regular account with multiple personal plans is better for you.

Note for sole traders:

You don't need to have a business phone plan to be able to claim your phone on tax . You can claim the portion you use for business on a regular, personal phone plan. This will be the most cost-effective choice for most sole traders who only have 1 phone.

Optus offers a huge range of plans to suit every kind of business with 1–300 plans able to be put on the same account and share data.

  • Good to know: Companies that require 10+ SIMs are encouraged to talk to an account manager to tailor data allowances, monthly rates and device inclusions to suit their business.

Here are the details of the plans available to every business without negotiation:

  • Plans start from $50 month-to-month or $47.50 on a 24-month plan or $45 on a 36-month plan – prices get cheaper the more SIMs you're after
  • 50GB of data, which accumulates and pools with other phones on the same account
  • Unlimited standard talk and text
  • Unlimited international talk and text to selected countries
  • Multiple service discount for total number of Business Mobile Plus services on the 1 plan, starting at 10% for 2, and up to 34% for 12+
  • Option to add $10 roaming packs for business trips

For businesses that need 6+ plans with devices, there are Tech Fund plans. These plans include:

  • Device credits from $300–$1,800, depending on the plan and length of contract
  • Up to 10GB of included international roaming data each month
  • Data ranging from 6GB–200GB (which is pooled)
  • The option to blend different plans on the 1 account (such as cheaper plans with no roaming for local sales reps, and plans with 10GB roaming inclusions for regional managers)

Vodafone logo

Vodafone offers the most affordable plans of the big 3 telcos, along with including some added features.

  • Good to know: If your employees need to travel overseas, the $5 a day roaming add on will allow them to keep the same number without breaking the budget.

Vodafone has 3 types of business plans:

  • Team plans. These allow data sharing between employees, and you can add a phone onto the individual plans. This is for when you have fewer than 10 services on the 1 account.
  • SIM only Business Flex mobile plans. Best for teams of 10+, which includes the use of a personal account manager.
  • Tech Fund Business Flex plans. These include credit towards buying handsets, as well as the use of a personal account manager.

Telstra announces T22 small business plans

Telstra has taken the wraps off its new small business plans, including a 24/7 tech support service and a fixed-line fault "concierge".

The plans were announced as part of the Telstra2022 strategy unveiled in June, which saw 8,000 jobs axed and is focused on "simplifying" the telco's offerings.

"Our new approach for small business is built around three things: Flexibility to enable businesses to scale and choose what is right for them; greater cost certainty and value; and expert service and advice," Telstra CEO Andy Penn said.

"This is a significant increase to the level of dedicated service and support we provide small businesses, to help take away complexity and give them peace of mind with their technology usage and support."

Under the AU$69 per month Business Choice mobile plan, small business will be able to order a mobile device -- with tablet plans costing AU$29 per month -- with no lock-in contracts, meaning they can add and subtract mobile plans month-to-month as their business peaks; remove excess data charges in Australia; and provide choices of add-ons, including business devices such as the Microsoft Surface Go.

According to the telco, making the plans more flexible will enable small businesses to scale with more cost certainty.

Telstra Platinum for Business is the telco's 24/7 phone and online tech advice and support offering, which comes with an on-call IT team that provides advice, installation, setup, troubleshooting across new technology hardware, software, cloud, and payment services. The service is priced at AU$40 per month or AU$60 per month with Platinum Business Security Service thrown in.

"From 26 December, Platinum for Business Security Service will also be available to small business customers, providing three security assessments, an annual health check report, and updates on the latest threats to help keep businesses up to date about their security," the telco explained.

Telstra is also launching unlimited data broadband plans starting at AU$100 per month for 24 months as a standard inclusion on its Business Bundle plans, which also includes a Telstra Business Smart Modem providing mobile backup for broadband dropouts.

In addition, the telco said it will triple its small business specialists in retail stores nationwide, bringing the number up to 3,000.

Telstra will also launch a new national IT channel for small business customers who have "more complex technology needs", called Telstra Business Technology Centres, in early 2019.

"Telstra Business Technology Centres ... will operate across a national footprint of 28 regions and be run by expert teams from Telstra's existing group of channel partners," Telstra said.

"The teams in each centre will provide personal and virtual account management to local business customers, helping them make the most of technology to do things such as be found and sell online, operate virtual teams across geographies, and keep their operations and their customers' data safe and secure."

Lastly, Telstra's new "concierge" tech support service will help small business customers with National Broadband Network (NBN) or fixed-line service faults, which will be included in all of its broadband bundles.

Previously under T22, Telstra had introduced new consumer mobile plans in July, which were based around greater personalisation as well as removing excess data charges and improving customer experience.

Telstra's goal is to have 20 core plans in a modular design by June next year covering both consumer and small business, with its next milestone under the T22 strategy to be to introduce a "market-leading loyalty program" in March 2019.

The four-pillar strategy for the next three years has six goals: to improve customer experiences; simplify its products, business, and operating model; extend its "network superiority and 5G leadership"; achieve global high performance in employee engagement; achieve a net cost productivity of AU$2.5 billion by FY22; and attain a post-NBN return on invested capital of 10 percent.

Which competitors should you consider?

Frequently asked questions, how do i set up caller id on a telstra landline.

Telstra offers their landline customers an unlisted service option. This feature can remove your Telstra home phone number from the White Pages and Telstra Directory Assistance.

But Telstra’s unlisted service option also allows you to enable Caller ID on your home phone in order to block your number from being displayed when you call someone.

Telstra home phone customers have two caller ID options:

  • Block your number from being identified on a call-by-call basis, or
  • Block your number from being identified permanently

Thankfully, setting up caller ID on your Telstra landline is simple, regardless of which option you choose. Here’s how:

Caller ID on a call-by-call basis

Dial 1831, followed by the phone number you wish to call, and your number will be blocked for that particular call only.

Caller ID on a permanent basis To block your number permanently, you’ll have to contact Telstra at 13 22 00. A Telstra representative will walk you through your options.

Note that if you block your number permanently using Telstra caller ID, you will have to unblock it on a call-by-call basis whenever you want your phone number to be displayed and identified by the person you’re calling.

To unblock your phone number on a call-call-basis after enabling permanent Caller ID, simply dial 1832, followed by the number you wish to call. And here’s a final tip: If you’d like to confirm that your caller ID is still enabled and your phone number is permanently blocked, dial 127 220 to hear an announcement telling whether or not caller ID is active.

How will Telstra’s size help me?

Well, if we keep ourselves to the mobile phone plan market (they do a bunch of other stuff like fixed broadband connections under the NBN, for example) they have a 70(ish)% market share. Over half of all the mobiles in Australia are on the  Telstra network .

The size of Telstra’s user base is good news and bad news for their customers. Being a phone company is a lot easier when you’re big. You can afford to cover a larger proportion of the country with your network & towers. On the other hand, having such many customers makes Telstra bureaucratic and slow to deal with. Some perceive them as arrogant and slow to consider the needs of their customers. We have the latest survey showing this finding, in the text, below.

However, Telstra seems to be changing its ways. After customers lodged several complaints about dealing with their overseas support staff over the years, the telco has finally listened. Now, Telstra has moved its call centres back to Australia, so you’ll speak with an Aussie whenever you ring them for help.

What do Telstra’s plans have that the others don’t?

Telstra have a number of plan features which are unique to them.

  • Never exceed your allowance: Telstra now also offer a plan feature which means you will never exceed your data allowance (What we like to call, ‘Peace Of Mind Data’ throttles speeds to 1.5Mbps after plan data is exhausted). Again, we explain the ins and outs of that, below.
  • They have 5G: Telstra now have 5G available in select areas. This only applies to certain plans, however.
  • They have a ‘Plus’ loyalty program: A nice-to-have component of some plans, offering the ability to accumulate points and cash them for actual accessories and devices, as well as other perks like cinema tickets. In our view, these probably aren’t a reason to stay with a phone company but if you were going to go with Telstra anyway, they are worth keeping an eye on.
  • Shared phone number: If you have one of the  new iPhones , you can pay a  $5 monthly charge and split the phone number between your  Apple Watch .

What is ‘Peace Of Mind’ Data?

Fairness is an issue to Australian consumers, especially when it comes to their phone bills. Our own research shows that  in 2017, 28% of people  had been charged $10 or more in the previous month, for exceeding the  data allowance  they were provided in their plan. Although newer data isn’t available, we imagine the numbers are not too dissimilar.

Telstra is taking the lead among Australian phone companies, in helping users manage their data. As well as an exceptional  self-service app  which they provide free to their users, Telstra has also put in place a new plan feature that we like to call ‘Peace Of Mind’ data.

Peace of mind data works by limiting (in the industry, it’s called  throttling ) the mobile data speeds you’re provided to 1.5Mbps when you reach the limit of your plan’s data allocation. Telstra offers this on their  postpaid SIM only plans .

It’s probably best explained with an example. Imagine your phone plan has 12 GB of data included in it. While you’re using that 12 GB of data each month, you’ll get the maximum / full network speeds offered by Telstra. Typically, on the Telstra network, that will give you 4G download speeds which are about as fast as your home broadband connection.

When you reach your 12GB limit, your access to data doesn’t stop. Nor will you be charged $10 per GB, as was previously the case. Instead, you will continue to get mobile data but it will be provided to you at a reduced speed of 1.5Mbps– thus, it might take a little longer for a map to appear, or the video you download from YouTube might be of a standard definition quality, rather than HD.

For almost any task, throttled data like this is enough to keep you going – although some tasks might take longer than you’re used to. On the plus side, you will always have access to data and you won’t be charged more. That’s why we call it Peace Of Mind Data.

How to Cancel your Telstra Plan

On the Telstra network, there are three ways you can cancel your existing phone plans with the network. They are;

  • Putting a call through to 13 22 00 and asking them to disconnect you from the service;
  • Chatting online with a  Telstra representative  to discuss other suitable phone plans which may interest the subscriber.
  • Heading in-store and chatting to a real person.

You may have to pay out the current billing month, or a pro-rated amount.

What is “Upgrade and Protect”?

Until 2019, Telstra used to offer a scheme called “Hardware Repayment Option”, where customers could buy extra hardware, and repay it over several months. Although they no longer offer this, they do offer an “Upgrade and Protect” scheme for their mobile customers.

For $15 a month, Telstra customer’s with a device included in the plan can upgrade their device before their contract ends. Essentially, this means they can always keep up with the latest trends.

Although, there are some terms and conditions to this scheme. Only customers on the last 6 months of a 12 month contract, or the last 12 months of a 24 or 36 month contract can swap their phone for a newer model. And, it’s only free if the phone is in good condition. If your phone is not in good condition, you may need to pay for the replacement.

The “Upgrade and Protect” scheme also covers screen protection, so you need to worry less if you drop your phone.

What is 4GX?

4GX  is a marketing name for faster network access. 4G is already pretty fast. 4Gx uses clever technical means to roughly double the 4G speeds Telstra’s users get. Telstra have actually done extremely well at rolling out their 4GX coverage.

The technology behind 4GX is FDD – Frequency Division Duplexing if you want to look it up.

Does Telstra let any smaller phone companies use their network ?

Telstra has a number of smaller phone networks reselling components of their network, known as the “Telstra Wholesale Network”. Belong Mobile ,  Woolworths Mobile ,  Aldi Mobile , CMobile and others, all have access to the “Telstra Wholesale Network”.

However, the only companies selling access to the full Telstra network are Telstra itself, and Boost Mobile

This is a different approach than Optus and  Vodafone  take to their network resellers.

What is a ‘Data Bank’?

A  data bank  is a feature that’s available on many of their prepaid plans. Data banking means that whatever data you’re given, it remains on your account until you use it, leave the company for another provider, or the bank reaches 200GB. Telstra offers it directly to their prepaid customers, or you can get it through  Belong Mobile , which also uses the Telstra Mobile Network. Telstra’s month-to-month plans don’t offer this feature at the moment.

Typically, with a phone plan, you’re given a data allocation which will last for a month. For example, you might be given a phone plan which has 6GB of 4G data. In the past, that allocation has been provided on a ‘use it or lose it’ basis. That is, if you won’t work your way through the 6GB of data in the month you’ve been granted it, whatever is left at the end of the month is forfeited and replaced with a new allocation, provided on the same terms.

A data bank is different. When you’re given your 6GB for the month, it will stay on your account until you use it. Say, in the first month, you use 4GB of your 6GB allocation. In the next month, you’ll see 8GB at the start of the month. The 6GB from your plan plus 2GB of data from last month.

The data bank facility stays in place for the entirety of your plan. Every bit of data you don’t use will be added to a running total or balance which you can use at any time, but remember, you can only hold up to 200GB in your bank.

What's good

Introducing Telstra’s Upfront Postpaid SIM Only Plans

Some time ago, Telstra revamped their postpaid plans. They have replaced postpaid SIM Only plans upfront postpaid plans.

Telstra’s new upfront postpaid plans have some new inclusions, and they have also lost some features as well. We’ll cover them all in this post.

Overall, Telstra’s multiple refresh approach is designed to align the company with the new hyper-competitive environment of Australian phone plans, especially with the knowledge of TPG’s new plan range, which is set to cause serious disruption to every major phone plan provider in Australia – including Telstra.

Telstra have now added even more perks to what they offer. With their upfront postpaid plans, you can get access to their 5G Network. Telstra now separates handset plans from your mobile phone plan, and you can stretch out your handset plan to 36 months and your mobile phone plans will upfront postpaid plans.

With Telstra’s upfront postpaid plans, you also don’t have to worry about data overage charges — your speed simply gets throttled to 1.5Mbps when your plan data is exhausted, and you can stay online at that speed for free until your next billing cycle.

Telstra offers a broad (sometimes so broad that they become bewildering) array of options, extras, and inclusions in their postpaid plan range. These include content inclusions attached to their phone plans, and contract agreements (in which the user is provided a phone with their Telstra service and pays for it over a period of up to 36 months – something we generally advise against these days). We explain each of these, below.

Telstra are not always easy to love. Their huge size means they’re great for big business and government contracts but can be hard for individuals to manage.

Telstra are not always  easy to love.  Their huge size means they’re great for big business and government contracts but can be difficult for individual customers to deal with. A quick tour of their website or customer service organization will serve as a quick reminder of how frustrating it can be for the individual customer to work with them. At some stage, almost all of us have had to go through it. They are so big, they’ve become unwieldy.

Here are a couple of ‘insider’ facts that are likely to help you in weighing the pros and cons of Telstra’s SIM Only offerings:

  • Telstra has excellent 4G coverage First of all, Telstra’s network coverage is the best in Australia. Telstra’s 4G covers 98.8% of Australia’s population. This is slightly better than Optus’ 98.5% and Vodafone’s 97%. You’d need to be really in the bush to not have access to Telstra’s 4G.
  • They have a reasonably good 5G service In the wake of Telstra (and everyone else) shutting down their 3G services, Telstra is already expanding their 5G network to cover more Aussies. Today, 80% of Australians could have access to Telstra’s 5G internet. At it fastest, Telstra’s 5G has speeds of up to 400mbps. However, it’s exact speed will vary depending on several factors, including device, location, and weather.
  • You can get cheaper deals on the Telstra Mobile Network Third, several phone companies resell the Telstra Mobile Network (now with 5G). They typically have better deals than Telstra itself. Below, we show you which of these options are our preferred Telstra Mobile Network resellers.

Let’s start by looking at the basics of Telstra’s inclusion structure. Then we can consider their content offerings and the all-important network question.

Telstra’s 2 Different Types Of SIM Only Plans:

We usually recommend the month-to-month variants of these plans for a simple reason; Data pricing falls so frequently that, in a few months, you are almost always likely to be able to get more data, however much you spend.

Prepaid Plans

Following their refresh several years ago, the only way you could get a month-to-month plan from Telstra was if you took one of their prepaid plans.

We have a dedicated section for  Telstra’s prepaid plans . However, with Telstra’s refresh last year, their upfront postpaid plans are now month-to-month as well, with no lock-in contracts.

Telstra launches upfront postpaid plans

Over 3 years ago, Telstra revamped its entire postpaid plan range, introducing month-to-month no lock-in SIM only plans. However, Telstra dumped those normal postpaid plans last year for upfront postpaid SIM only plans.

Telstra’s new upfront postpaid plans will require you to pay first before your plan becomes active. You will need to have a debit / credit card, or bank on file, because upfront plans require automatic charges by AutoPay on the same date of each month.

That is, unlike previous postpaid plans that sent you a bill at the end of your billing cycle and then gave you 2 weeks to pay, these new upfront postpaid plans will debit your card or bank automatically.

Other than the fact that the new postpaid plans are upfront, Telstra hasn’t changed much. You still get the same data inclusions at the same price points, as well as no excess data charges (overage charges) (which we think is one of the fairest treatment of data in Australia).

However, Telstra have added some inclusions and removed some features temporarily, while some features have been removed permanently.

The new upfront postpaid range includes the following features:

  • Postpaid and prepaid customers can get a taste of 5G: Telstra’s 5G Network is now live in over 400 major and regional cities. However, Telstra’s mobile 5G is only available for those with a 5G compatible device. If you have a 5G device. You can get a taste of the 5G network free of charge on Telstra’s Basic, Essential, Premium, and Mobile Bundle Plan and one prepaid plan.
  • Customers can add a device to month-to-month plans with no lock-in contracts: Vodafone launched this scheme for their postpaid plans around a year ago, in recognition of a number of changes in the market. People are holding on to their phones longer and hate to be slugged with extra data charges at $10 per month. Telstra has followed suit and now provides very similar features to Vodafone. Telstra postpaid plans are now month-to-month plans with no lock-in contracts, and you can add a device as well on a lengthy contract while still keeping your mobile plan as month-to-month. This is a big change for Telstra who used to only offer 12-month contracts in the SIM Only space.
  • Customers can now pay off a device over a 12, 24, or 36-month span, and device plans are separate from your mobile plan: Another significant change which has been taking place among Australian phone plan buying is the concept of ‘peak smartphone‘. We’re all holding on to our phones longer than we used to. To Telstra, that means acknowledging that a 2-year contract might be right for some, but won’t be right for everyone. Separating the plan cost and phone cost, making their product structure ‘modular’ – providing service elements that people can choose or change as they want to – recognizes the shift and simplifies the choices they are making. Although you can add a device to your separate month-to-month mobile phone plan, you’d have to stay connected for 36 months to keep your monthly device payments low, but they offer 24-month and 12-month plans as well.
  • Customers don’t get charged for excess data within Australia – their data speeds get throttled to 1.5mbps instead: Overage charges (when you get slugged with another $10 on your bill for exceeding your included data allowance) really annoy customers. Telstra’s new plan range continues their alternative approach, limiting speeds to 1.5mbps when you reach your limit, and you stay connected at that speed for free until your next billing cycle kicks in. Most users find that speed  perfectly OK for what they want to do – and preferable to the charged ($10/GB) alternative.
  • Discounts on Entertainment In the past, Telstra used to offer data-free entertainment. However, although they no longer offer this service, you can get fantastic discounts when you buy through Telstra. We think the reason why Telstra no longer do “Data- Free” streaming is that they now offer Peace Of Mind Data instead. When you sign up for Telstra, it’s worth looking into the TV, Movies, and Sports streaming that you can save money on. Towards the end of this article, we’ll go into more detail about some of the offers they have.

Quick Summary of upfront postpaid plans

  • They have ‘Peace Of Mind’ (‘unlimited’) data plans: A few years ago, Optus launched a plan with unlimited data included for a short time. Telstra and Vodafone followed suit shortly after. The regulator didn’t like the messaging of the unlimited plans that were released because they were not, in fact, unlimited. After the core data inclusion was used in these ‘Unlimited’ plans, bandwidth was  slowed to 1.5 Mbps . To avoid a lawsuit, the telcos withdrew those unlimited plans from the market. Now, on all of Telstra’s upfront SIM Only postpaid plans, you won’t be charged for extra data once you reach the limit of your monthly data inclusions – you’ll always have access to data (when you’re in coverage). However, the download speeds you’ll get are capped at that 1.5 Mbps limit. We call that ‘Peace of Mind’ data.
  • Data sharing:  Telstra’s new upfront plans now include data sharing across up to 10 devices on the same account.
  • International inclusions:  Telstra’s new upfront postpaid plans now come with unlimited International SMS and MMS from Australia, as well as 30 minutes of  International calls . If you’d like more International minutes, Telstra offer a $10 add on.
  • Overseas roaming:  When Telstra Customers go on holiday, they can purchase an “Overseas roaming pass” for $10. This gives them 1GB of data, and unlimited calls and texts during their travels.
  • Smartwatch and eSIM:  Also, the new upfront postpaid plans don’t support smartwatches and eSIM for now. These features will be added later.
  • No more Telstra Air and some other features:  Upfront postpaid plans don’t have access to  Telstra Air , Mobile Protect, Voice to Text, and Caller Tones.
  • Great ’24×7′ Self Service App: Telstra’s 24×7 app for Self Service and Account Management is extremely good. So are the alternatives from Vodafone and Australia’s other major alternatives. You can manage your SIM Only agreement just fine from this Self Service app, as well as use the app for any type of contract plan from Telstra. We always advise people to take advantage of these apps – they help you manage your data and get the most out of your service for free, without having to wait on hold all the time.
  • Telstra has impressive sports deals: If you like sports, Telstra has you covered. Telstra customers can get $20 off a Kayo Sport subscription- every month for a year. That means more sport, at a lower price!
  • Loyalty Rewards:  Telstra’s Loyalty scheme is called “Telstra Plus“. It allows you to accumulate points and cash them in for actual accessories and devices, as well as other smaller items such as movie and concert tickets. Every $1 you spend with Telstra earns you 10 points. It’s a nice-to-have scheme, at best, and should not (in our view) influence your decision as to which network to go with. These rewards are to trick the rational bit of your brain – in reality, they are worth little (in our view!).
  • 5G Coverage: Telstra 5G is now available in select areas on some postpaid and prepaid plans. There are several 5G smartphones available now, including the iPhone 14 lineup. The only X factor is 5G coverage, which isn’t everywhere yet. So far, Telstra claims that their 5G network covers 80% of the population. Most of that coverage is in major cities and suburbs, so if you live and work in such an area, there’s a good chance you’ll have access to Telstra 5G if you purchase the right plan.

Cons Of Telstra

Their 5G is not as fast as Optus

The following information is based on 2022 data, so it’s not impossible that things have changed. However, based on this data, if you’re desperate for the quickest 5G data, it seems you’re better going with Optus.

In 2022, Optus’ 5G data came in with a top download speed of 240.5mpbs. Washer Telstra was only 232.3mbps.

Their plans can be expensive

As with the other two Tier-1 Telco’s, Telstra is not always very budget friendly. Because you get access to excellent customer care, and all of their services (including their full 4G and 5G network). If Telstra is out of budget for you, consider using one of their MVNOs instead- you don’t get as much, but you get what most people need.

There are so many options, it can be confusing.

With Telstra, you can get prepaid, post-paid, sim-only, phone included (pay over 12-months), phone included (pay over 24-months), mobile broadband, home internet, telstra for business. There’s so much going on, that it can be overwhelming.

They are shutting down their 3G network.

On the 30 th of June 2024, Telstra will no longer have their 4G network. To be fair to them, we can’t be too mad, 3G is not profitable anymore. But, this might cause older people to become confused as they need a new phone.

Telstra’s SIM Only plans offer you access to their network. Again, you may be surprised to see how similar the 4G population coverage profiles of the major networks are.

3G coverage is where Telstra really have the advantage:

Telstra’s 3G coverage footprint, however, is around twice the signal area  you’d get on either the Optus or Vodafone networks. 4G speeds are obviously better than 3G – but 3G is far, far preferable to no coverage at all. This is the reality of the extra you pay for Telstra. If you live outside a city, there may well be a lot of times, when you can only get a mobile internet connection with Telstra. It might only apply to 1 – 5% of the population – those who live or work in the extra 1.2 million square Kilometers or so that Telstra’s 3G network covers. But to them, that’s an important fact.

Telstra has moved its call centres back to Australia

In 2022 Telstra hired 2,000 Aussies as support staff and moved its call centres back to Australia. The telco will use a hybrid model, where some of its support staff will work from home. This means that when you ring Telstra for help, you’ll talk to an Australian and not overseas support staff. And because they work from home, you might even be speaking to someone in your neighbourhood, making it easier for them to understand and empathise with you about any network issues you might have.

Telstra unlimited data plan

Telstra’s unlimited plans bill you on a monthly basis. But as you would expect, Telstra’s unlimited plans will cost you more than an average data plan. The Essential bundle starter pack, which comes with a 100GB data allowance, costs $70 per month while the Unlimited bundle starts from $90/month.

The monthly bills of the  standalone SIM plans  also cover the cost of a Telstra Wi-Fi modem, although you’ll have to pay up the remaining total cost of the modem if you want to retain ownership of it after cancelling your service before the end of the 24 month period. Telstra also charges a $99 upfront connection charge, but there are exceptions to this.

How to check telstra data balance

As a prepaid subscriber, you can check your mobile data usage in three main ways;

  • On a smartphone or tablet
  • On your mobile’s browser
  • On your desktop

To check your data on a smartphone or tablet, open the  Telstra 24X7 App  and select your prepaid number. Your data balance will be shown on the screen.

On mobile browser, disconnect your device from any connected Wi-Fi and type  http://m.telstra.com/  into your browser. Your balance will be shown under ‘included bonuses and packs’.

On your desktop, sign into your  Telstra 24X7 My Account . Select your prepaid number from the drop-down menu at the top of the page. Select ‘balance remaining’ under the ‘balance and recharge’ page to see your balance.

As a postpaid subscriber, you can access your data usage in three simple methods;

  • With the Telstra 24X7 App
  • With the Telstra 24X7 My Account website
  • With a text message

Summing up Telstra’s SIM Only Plans

Adding things like Peace of Mind data into their phone plans might justify the  SIM Only plans that Telstra has in market.

Telstra has made a range of improvements to their SIM Only plan range, both postpaid and prepaid. Their data allowance have increased on all price points, and they’ve added fair treatment offers like data banking (prepaid) and Peace of Mind data (postpaid). These new features have led to a  reduction in complaints to the TIO , so Telstra is definitely making the right moves.

Optus has a large number of credible and fast-growing brands in it’s stable.  Moose Mobile ,  Spintel  and  Vaya , all offer postpaid deals on the Optus networks. Amaysim  and  Yomojo  all offer prepaid plans on the Optus network. While Telstra matches Optus on price, Optus steals everything below – in one form or another.

However, all that being said, Telstra is a safe, and reliable Tier-1. If you’re worried about your privacy since the Optus breach, Telstra could be a great alternative. If you live in rural Australia, you simply have to consider Telstra or one of its resellers  Boost  /  Belong .

WORST provider ever of any kind!!! I ported my number from Moose three weeks ago, Telstra said it would take 24 hrs to complete. Now, three weeks have passed, where is my number??? Telstra’s customer service? Don’t be SILLY! Never talk about things that don’t exist.

Telstra is the absolute worst provider

Telstra is the absolute worst provider! Charging expensive prices but providing the poorest service! My call never got through no matter at daytime or nighttime. Very hard to cancel. I have switched to a new provider for three months but they kept sending billing emails to me. Do not choose Telstra, you will regret your choice.

Not recommend

I ordered a post-paid SIM online, waited a week to arrive and four days to activate. I called them for the reason why these processes took that long, but they could not give me an explanation. Not recommend.

There's a reason Telstra costs more than most; but do you really need to be paying the premium?

It's not just coverage that makes Telstra the most expensive mobile provider. Telstra is Australia’s original phone service provider, and for many, it is still the best for coverage and speeds. Telstra’s network coverage remains superior to the competition, with extended reach in regional and remote areas of Australia, and it was among the first of the network owners to roll out fast 5G coverage. 

You’ll pay extra to be a Telstra customer, and in some cases this price difference is significant. But in return, you get access to Australia’s fastest mobile network, a huge customer support team, as well as plenty of exclusive offers and perks through Telstra Plus rewards . Telstra itself is not for the budget conscious but you can save some money with an MVNO that uses the Telstra network .

To give you an idea of Telstra's value for money, let's take a look at its most popular plan: 

At the time of writing, the $58 Basic Upfront SIM Plan is the most popular Telstra plan available. It gives you 40GB to use for $58 per month on the Telstra 4G/5G network. It's no contract and can be paired with a new smartphone on a 24 or 36-month payment plan. It also comes with some neat perks, like two months of Binge , three months of Apple TV Plus and four months Spotify Premium. 

Telstra iPhone 14 plans

If you're looking to pick an iPhone 14 up through Telstra, your cheapest option is going to be the Telstra Upfront Mobile Plan Basic. Priced at $58 per month, this plan includes 40GB of data, unlimited local calls and texts and access to both Telstra's 4G and 5G network coverage.

The cost of pairing this plan with the new iPhone 14 is going to vary based on the model you choose. Assuming that the baseline iPhone 14 is the model you're after, you're looking at $38.86 per month in handset fees on a 36 month plan. All told, this works out to a total $96.58 per month over 36 months.

If you'd prefer a 24 month plan, you're looking at $58.29 per month in handset fees and $115.87 overall.

Telstra phone plans

Instead of the typical postpaid model, Telstra's SIM plans uses what it calls an Upfront payment method. Essentially, instead of paying your bill at the end of the month, you'll simply fork out your fee at the start of the month. It's similar to a prepaid plan but comes with the more premium inclusions you'd expect from a postpaid arrangement.

Across the entire Telstra range of phone plans, we’d argue that you needn't choose a plan higher than the Basic Upfront SIM Plan. There are phone plans with more data, of course, and you’ll need to bring your own phone (or grab one through Telstra), but this plan has everything you need at a price that won’t break the bank. If anything, 40GB of data per month is probably a tad excessive, but there are no smaller options available.

If the prices of the plans listed above overshoot your budget, or you’d prefer to avoid signing a contract, Telstra does have Prepaid plans available too. Our pick is the $30 Prepaid Complete plan, as you can see below. Just keep in mind that the credit you buy with this plan expires every 28 days. This means you need to recharge your account 13 times each year, a fact that may come as a surprise.

But to be honest, we probably wouldn’t choose Telstra for a Prepaid plan if value for money was a consideration. There are dozens of smaller mobile carriers offering better, cheaper prepaid plans .

Telstra mobile features and perks

All Telstra's Upfront plans now come with 5G connectivity, a huge perk for those who want faster mobile speeds. Telstra’s Prepaid plans, on the other hand 

Telstra Upfront plans can be bundled with a range of cutting-edge and recent smartphones, including the latest iPhone, Google Pixel or Samsung Galaxy. Telstra lets you opt to purchase a handset outright, or you can pay it off over time with 12-month or 24-month handset repayment terms.

One of the better data-related perks for SIM-only plans is there are no excess data charges in Australia. This means if you burn through your max-speed data allowance, speeds are slowed to 1.5Mbps for the duration of your billing cycle. 

Woolworths Mobile also runs on the Telstra network and tends to offer great perks, too. Check out their plans below in comparison to Telstra’s offering.

Telstra mobile customer support and satisfaction

The premium price of Telstra plans also helps fund an impressive array of customer support options for when things go awry. Telstra offers self-paced support via forums and self-service online tools. If you want to talk to someone, Telstra is responsive via Twitter and Facebook, plus there’s an online chat service and dedicated phone support.

While there aren’t any excess data charges on SIM Only plans, you can monitor your usage via the Telstra app, plus there’s a range of in-person stores and Telstra Plus perks for earning points and other benefits.

Telstra support is impressive, but overall customer satisfaction isn’t as flash according to user-generated score on sites like Product Review and Trustpilot, even if the Google review fares better. In fairness, those score trends are relatively the same for Optus and Vodafone, too. Moose Mobile , Numobile, Pennytel and Tangerine are the only telcos that average above four out of five on these user-review websites.

What are Telstra Blue Tick phones?

In a country as large as Australia, coverage is a major consideration, especially if you live or work outside of the major metro areas. Telstra’s network is renowned for its coverage reach, but if you are at the edges of this coverage area you may need a specific phone model to get a good signal.

The Telstra Blue Tick is a way for Telstra to signify which handsets are superior for coverage based on its own internal testing. Not every phone is eligible, so this list is important if you feel like you need that boost in signal.

Samsung phones are generally the most popular Blue Tick handsets, mostly because the Apple iPhones don't earn the Blue Tick signification.

Telstra launches Starlink plan for small businesses at residential prices (and speeds)

Telstra has announced a new Starlink plan for small businesses that will cost the same as residential plans.

This follows Telstra’s commitment back in July 2023 to provide Starlink-powered fixed broadband and voice services to rural Australians — including business customers.

The service will be available for businesses with up to five employees and will cost $125 a month, in addition to the one-time $599 setup cost of Starlink.

The plan offers unlimited data with download speeds of up to 50mbps and upload speeds of up to 10mbps.

It’s worth noting that there are already Starlink business plans available at higher speeds — but they’re more expensive.

These plans start at $176 per month and come with 220mbps download speeds as well as up to 25mbps upload speeds.

So if you need those higher speeds, this new plan may not work for you. But if you require a more basic connection for your business, Telstra’s decision to match consumer pricing for its small business customers could provide a more affordable option.

The new plan is being positioned as a solution for businesses operating in areas where traditional internet services have historically been unreliable or unavailable.

Connectivity has long been a challenge for rural and remote small businesses, which make up around 30% of all small businesses in Australia.

Telstra’s business group executive, Amanda Hutton, emphasised the significance of the partnership, reiterating that satellite technology can provide broadband access to businesses in geographically challenging areas.

“By leveraging satellite technology, we’re able to ensure that some of the most isolated businesses can access broadband internet,” Hutton said.

“According to  our recent Business Tech State of Play report , the connected tech that will have the biggest and most positive impact on Australian SMBs over the next one to two years is renewed access to fast, reliable and secure internet connectivity. Businesses can’t unlock new and exciting opportunities if they don’t have good access to connectivity!”

This news follows a recent price increase for Telstra business SIM plans.

Basic plans are rising from $62 to $65 per month, the Essential plan from $72 to $75, and the Premium plan from $95 to $99. Pre-paid plans will also see adjustments from October, with the $35 plan increasing to $39.

How Telstra Trade-In works

Mobile device coverage depends on where you are, the device you are using and whether it has an external antenna attached.

5G coverage

The 5G symbol appearing on the device represents that 5G is available on the network in the vicinity of the device. Speed and performance, and whether a 5G device uses the available 5G depends on prevailing radio conditions at your location and whether the device is actively downloading or uploading data. Outside of 5G coverage, 5G devices will continue to use our fastest available 4G, or 3G where 4G is unavailable.

Outdoor coverage

The Telstra mobile coverage checks have been created using tools that predict the likely areas of outdoor coverage. We have not individually tested every particular location within the identified outdoor coverage areas for coverage. This means that while the footprint of outdoor coverage for a particular location is generally accurate, there may be some areas described as being within the outdoor coverage area proximate to locations searched where your device will not work. This is a common characteristic of wireless systems. For example, actual outdoor coverage could be degraded or not existent in specific locations due to certain geographic features or as a result of the device used. Geographic features that may reduce or block outdoor coverage could include formations, such as hills and mountains or even trees.

Indoor coverage

The Telstra mobile coverage checks also provide an indication of the availability of indoor coverage at locations searched, where this is predicted. This is as accurate as we can make it based on what we know. Indoor coverage is highly variable and there may be locations where indoor coverage is indicated, but your device will not work due to local building density, physical structures and building materials. For example, the following things may reduce or block indoor coverage: basements, lifts, underground car parks, concrete buildings, tunnels and road cuttings, steel framing and metallic window film. Devices such as the Telstra Mobile Smart Antenna may assist to improve indoor coverage where it would otherwise not occur.

Offshore coverage

Factors beyond Telstra's control such as the weather, tides, sea conditions and your antenna installation (type and height of antenna above sea level) can significantly influence the actual user experience of coverage, data speed and performance in offshore locations. Public mobile networks must not be relied upon as a primary method of emergency communication at sea.

Plan prices.

Your plan and add-ons may change (including price and inclusions), or we may move you to a new plan (which may cost more). If you don't like a change, you can change your plan or cancel your plan or add-ons. When you cancel, your service will be disconnected immediately. We won't refund any money you've already paid, and you'll need to pay out any remaining devices, accessories or services in full when you cancel.

Telstra currently offers 5G in select areas and is progressively rolling it out to other areas. In non-5G coverage areas, you’ll automatically switch to our 4G or 3G.  Check coverage map .  Telstra will be switching off 3G on 31 August 2024. Before switch off, you can use handsets supporting 3G on 850MHz and 4G minimally on 700MHz and 1800MHz. See how to  check your device  for more information. After switch off you will still be able to access the Telstra Mobile Network provided your device is 4G voice enabled and 4G 700MHz compatible. Find out more on our  3G closure  page.

Plan Speeds

Speeds may vary due to factors such as location, distance from the base station, local conditions, concurrent users, hardware and software configuration and download/upload destination. For 5G coverage information, check coverage map .

The Telstra Mobile Network offers 4GX in all capital CBDs and selected suburban and regional areas and is progressively rolling out to more places. In other coverage areas around Australia, you’ll automatically switch to our fastest available 4G or 3G.

Typical download speeds in 4GX areas are 5 -300Mbps with category 16 devices, 5-200Mbps with category 11 devices, 5-150Mbps with category 9 devices, 2-100Mbps with category 6 devices, and 2-75Mbps with category 4 devices. Outside 4GX areas, you will switch to our fastest available 4G or 3G speeds. Speeds vary for reasons like location, distance from base stations, terrain, user numbers, hardware/software configuration, download source and upload destination.

Data plan is required. 4GX available in 4GX enabled areas.

Month-to-month plans

If you cancel your service, you will receive a pro rata refund for the remainder of your month. If you have any device, accessory or service add-ons attached to your plan, you will have to pay any remaining amount owing on your next bill.

Device Payment Contract

You must have an eligible Telstra Data Plan in order to have a Device Payment Contract. If you cancel your Device Payment Contract early, cancel your data plan during the device payment term or move to an ineligible data plan during the payment term, you’ll need to pay out your device, in full. Device discounts do not apply to cancelled Device Payment Contracts.

Talk, Text and Data

Calls to standard Australian numbers are at a pay-as-you-go rate of $1 per minute, charged in 1 minute blocks or part thereof. SMS/MMS to standard Australian numbers are charged at a pay-as-you-go rate of 25c for SMS and 55c for MMS per message sent, per recipient.

No excess data charges in Australia

Once you exceed your included data allowance, your speed will be capped at 1.5Mbps, and slowed further in busy periods. This means it is not suitable for HD video or high speed applications and means that some webpages, videos, social media content and files may take longer to load, but you can still stream video in standard definition, listen to music, browse the web and access social media, even if the experience is slower sometimes.

No Excess Data Charges – Existing Services

Any existing shareable services on your account with Extra Data will be automatically migrated to No Excess Data Charges when you take up this plan.

International Roaming

The only way to use your service overseas is by purchasing an International Roaming day pass. You can purchase an International Roaming day pass at $5 per day in 7 eligible countries, or $10 per day in more than 70 eligible countries. Day pass Zone 1 and 2 packs include 2GB of data to use per day as well as unlimited talk and text. Usage expires at the end of a 24-hour day pass period. If you go over your 2GB, you can add an additional 2GB for $10 for use within 31 days. A day pass is triggered whenever a call is made or received, an SMS is sent or if any mobile data is used in an eligible destination.

If you’re travelling to a destination where our International Roaming day pass isn’t available, you cannot use your Telstra service.

Telstra Trade-In is managed by Assurant Services Australia Pty Ltd. To be eligible for Trade-In, you must be a Telstra consumer or small business customer aged 18+, with a post-paid service and have a device, tablet or smartwatch with us on an Upfront plan or with an existing 13-digit account number. Not available to customers with a ten-digit account number or Upgrade & Protect. Devices on Telstra Mobile Lease plans are ineligible. You may only trade in a device, tablet or smartwatch from Assurant’s list of eligible devices. The credit offer will vary depending on your device, tablet or smartwatch type, model and its working condition, and is subject to assessment. Credit applied by second bill, or to a nominated credit/debit card within 30 days for Upfront Mobile plans.

How much storage do I need?

Consider your usage.

How much storage you’ll need depends on how you use your phone or tablet. If you mainly use it for web browsing and checking social media, you may only need up to 64GB of storage.

If you’re a casual user who likes to take a few photos, you might need a bit more storage – say up to 128GB.

But if you take a lot of photos and videos, or play lots of graphic-intensive games with your phone or tablet, you’re more likely to need a larger amount of storage – say 256GB or more.

Here’s an example

As a rough guide, a 128GB phone or tablet on average can store approximately:

  • 1 hour of Ultra HD video
  • 1,000 songs
  • 100 apps and games

Again, this is a rough guide only and will vary depending on the size of the files, apps and games being stored.

It’s worth noting that if you max out your storage, your phone or tablet is likely to run a bit slower. For that reason, many people prefer to opt for more storage.

Bundle plans are a great way to save money and get everyone in your business connected. From August, there will be two kinds of Bundle Plans available: Mobile Bundle Plans and Data Bundle Plans.

You’ll need to have at least one service on your account on an Essential and Premium plan to take up a Bundle Plan.

How many Bundle Plans can I add to my account?

If you’re an Upfront plan customer, you can add up to 5 Bundle Plans in total, regardless of the number of Essential and Premium Plans you have active on your account. If you’re not an Upfront plan customer, you can add 5 Bundle Plans to each Essential and Premium mobile or data plan you have active on your account.

Mobile Bundle Plans

Mobile Bundle Plans let you add employees’ phones to your account so you can all share data and enjoy access to a data allowance with uncapped download speeds on Australia’s best network. They’re a great value alternative to Pre-Paid plans.

Data Bundle Plans

Data Bundle Plans let you add data to employees’ business tablets or mobile broadband devices at a great price, and manage them on your business account. They’re great for businesses who work on the go or across multiple within Australia’s largest network.

Consumer Price Index (CPI)

What is consumer price index (cpi).

CPI is the rate of inflation and is calculated annually by collecting prices for goods and services that households buy. It is measured as the rate of change of those prices, which typically rise over time.

How does Telstra determine what the CPI rate will be?

Telstra doesn't determine CPI. We take the annual result as determined by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

We’ll use the CPI rate released by ABS for the 12 months to the March quarter and any increase will be rounded to the nearest dollar.

No lock-in plan

No lock-in means our plans can change.

Our month-to-month mobile plans with no lock-in contracts give you the flexibility to change your plan size once a month, to suit your data needs.

Because these plans aren’t locked in, it also means that from time to time we may make changes to your plan price and/or inclusions (such as data allowance), or we may move you to a new plan (which may cost more). 

However, if we reasonably think that a change is likely to have a more than minor detrimental impact on you, we'll tell you at least 30 days before making it. If you don't like the change, you can change your plan size or cancel your plan at any time. If you cancel, you’ll just need to pay out your device, accessories and add-ons as a one-off payment when you cancel. 

Speed slowed to a maximum of 1.5Mbps

When you exceed your data allowance in Australia, you can continue to access data, but your speed will be slowed to a maximum of 1.5Mbps. This isn’t suitable for HD video or high-speed applications, and some web pages, social media content and files may take longer to load.

Your speed will depend on a range of factors including your device, location, user numbers and download sources, and may be slowed further during busy periods. Heavy data users (users in the top 1% of all data users) may experience slower speeds than other users during busy periods. For personal use on a smartphone in Australia only and the FairPlay Policy applies.
