Assignments: Deadlines, Penalties and Extensions

The DALSL office is not open Saturday or Sunday or during public holidays or after 5pm on workdays.

DEADLINES Deadlines for coursework are NOT generally negotiable.  Any work submitted after the due date and without an extension form will be treated as overdue and penalties will apply (see below).

Out of class (take-home) assessments are due no later than 4pm on the due date. Assignments handed in after 4pm, will not be processed until the following work day and penalties will apply.

PENALTIES The mark given to an overdue assignment will be reduced by 5 per cent (out of 100) for each day that it is late up to 5 working days (eg. an assignment worth 80 per cent would receive 75 per cent if it is one day late, 70 per cent if it is two days late etc… 55 per cent if it is 5 days late.)

Assignments which are due on Friday, but not processed until the following Monday or Tuesday, will be counted as TWO days late.

Overdue assignments submitted more than five days late will not be marked nor will assignments be marked if submitted after the assignment has been marked and returned.  Unmarked assignments will be held until the end of the semester at which time the marker may choose to award a minimal completion mark (1 or 2 per cent) in cases where the final grade for the student is borderline (D+).  For this reason, it is better to hand in a late assignment than no assignment at all.

HOW TO SEEK/ REQUEST/ APPLY FOR AN EXTENSION In serious circumstances beyond the student’s control  (see below), s/he may apply to the staff member who marks the assignment for an extension form. Students should request extensions 2-3 days in advance.  Only in extreme circumstances will late requests for extensions be considered.

Serious circumstances means sudden illness (in the case of in-class tests etc) or long-term illness (for essays etc done over a week or more) but does NOT mean time management difficulties such as too many assignments due at once, wanting to go on holiday, relatives visiting from overseas etc.

Only ONE extension can be granted to a student per assignment.

OUT-OF-CLASS ASSESSMENT

(i.e. take-home essays/ projects assignments etc)   When a staff member grants an extension they will issue the student with a signed extension form stating a new due date, and any additional documentation they may require (such as medical certificates).

The completed assignment must be submitted on or before the new due date together with the signed extension form and the other paperwork. Otherwise the extension will be void and the assignment will be treated as overdue.

Note also the following statement regarding plagiarism. ‘The University of Auckland will not tolerate cheating, or assisting others to cheat, and views cheating in coursework as a serious academic offence.  The work that a student submits for grading must be the student's own work, reflecting his or her learning.  Where work from other sources is used, it must be properly acknowledged and referenced.   This requirement also applies to sources on the world-wide web.  A student's assessed work may be reviewed against electronic source material using computerised detection mechanisms.  Upon reasonable request, students may be required to provide an electronic version of their work for computerised review.’ The penalties for plagiarism are severe and can range from gaining no marks for the assignment to disciplinary action under the terms of the Examination Regulations.

For further details and advice on avoiding plagiarism, refer to Conduct of Coursework Guidelines: http://www.auckland.ac.nz/uoa/fms/default/uoa/about/teaching/policiesprocedures/docs/conductcoursework.pdf

Students may need to submit assignments to www.turnitin.com . no later than the due date.  If not, they will be considered late and incur the same penalties as a late assignment.  Details on how to submit to Turnitin will be available on Cecil under Resources for this course and as a handout if you are required to do this.

Assignments vary in their requirements for formatting and layout. Check for formatting requirements in your course materials or with your course coordinator. Aim for consistency in your formatting. Most assignments are now submitted electronically and formatted as follows:

  • Use a clearly legible font and font size (Times New Roman is the most common font and 12 point is the most common size).
  • Set page margins to around 1 inch/2.5cm.
  • Use 1.5 or double line spacing.
  • Keep the space between paragraphs consistent. Two styles are:
  • Do not indent paragraphs and leave a blank line between paragraphs. (This is the most common style.)
  • Indent the first line of each paragraph, but leave no spaces between paragraphs.
  • Ensure text alignment is consistent throughout the document. Assignment guidelines and style guides vary when it comes to text alignment . If you are following APA style , then align text left (also see the annotated sample APA student assignment ).
  • For help with formatting in Microsoft Word see Basic formatting .

Always double-check for the formatting requirements of your individual course.

Cover sheet

Assignments that are submitted electronically via Stream will not usually require a cover sheet. If you have been asked to include a cover sheet, then refer to your assignment guidelines, which should detail what is to be included. If in doubt, contact your lecturer or course coordinator directly for clarification.

Most assignments do not require a title page. Usually, it is sufficient to include the assignment title or question at the top of the first page and to place other details (name, student ID number, and course number) in a header . If a cover sheet is included, all the necessary information is already included on the cover sheet. However, title pages are sometimes needed for longer assignments, postgraduate assignments, or certain types of report.

The format of these title pages varies according to the specific requirements of the assignment, but typically contain:

  • The title, centred, in the upper half of the page (e.g., about 3 or 4 lines down from the top margin of the page). Your title should be concise and, ideally, no more than a single line. If you have a subtitle, it can be separated from the main title with a blank, double-spaced line. The title should be in bold font and in title case (i.e., the first word of major words over three letters is capitalised). The title font is the same style and size and the rest of the cover page details (e.g., Times New Roman or Calibri, 12pt). Note: According to the 7th edition of the APA style guide, the title (in bold, centred, and title case) should appear on the first line of the first page of text. This may not be necessary, however, and you should ask your lecturer or course coordinator for clarification.
  • The author's name and ID number. Use one blank double-spaced line between the assignment title and your centred name and ID. Write your name in full rather than using initials. Your name should be non-bold and the same size and font as the rest of the cover page. Omit all titles, degrees or licenses (e.g., Dr, Ms, Mr, PhD, RN). Multiple authors should be given alphabetically. The lecturer’s name and title (e.g., Dr.). The lecturer’s name should follow a blank, double-spaced line after the class code and name, and be non-bold and the same size and font as the rest of the cover page.
  • The due date of the assignment. The due date should follow a blank, double-spaced line after the lecturer’s name, and be non-bold and the same size and font as the rest of the cover page.

If you've been asked to format your title page using APA style, see here for formatting guidelines. See here for an example of a title page formatted according to APA 7th edition guidelines.

6th edition

Some assignment types require headings and sub-headings, whereas others do not use any.

Essays , for example, do not usually use sub-headings unless you have specific instructions that they can be included. The only sub-heading common in essays is References, for the reference list. Instead of headings, the first sentence of each paragraph should signal the topic to the reader (see essay body paragraphs for more on this).

Reports , on the other hand, often require specific headings, such as Introduction, Discussion, and so forth.

If you are unsure whether to use headings or not, ask your course coordinator for clarification. If you do use headings and sub-headings, keep the style consistent throughout the assignment. If you are using APA style , see here for advice about formatting headings.

Tables and figures

Most assignments do not use appendices, but sometimes you need to include additional information, transcripts, questionnaire details, or raw data. These should go in an appendix.

If there is only one appendix, it is given the title “Appendix”. If there are several appendices, each is given a letter (follow the same order that they are mentioned in the body of the assignment): “Appendix A”, “Appendix B”, “Appendix C”, etc.

The title is used to refer to the appendix in the body of the assignment:

The analysis shows that the mean was well above expected (see Appendix B for details).

Style guides differ on whether the appendices should come before or after the reference list / bibliography.

APA style (the style most commonly used at Massey University) and Massey University's Thesis Presentation Guide put the appendices after the reference list / bibliography.

Assessments and assignments

You'll need to complete assignments in most of your courses while you're studying at AUT. Your lecturer will tell you when your assignments are due and what you need to cover or will tell you where to find this information. You can ask them questions to clarify any points about the assignments.

Finding information about assignments

You have access to various people, systems and services to help you develop the knowledge and skills you need to excel at assignments. Below are some places you can go to for more information or assistance with your assignments:

Canvas is AUT's web-based learning environment where you can access course material, key readings, course handbooks, announcements from lecturers and other resources to help manage your learning throughout your study. Each of the courses you're enrolled in will be available online through Canvas.

Blackboard Collaborate

Blackboard is your one stop shop for all things related to your courses including lectures, lab notes, assessments, class updates, study guides and handbooks and your course specific timetable.

Your lecturers may also use Blackboard Collaborate to provide a virtual classroom. You can find more information about how to connect and use Blackboard Collaborate below.

Blackboard Collaborate guide

If you have trouble, contact the ICT Service Desk

AUT library

In addition to accessing books, journals, e-books and videos, the library also provides a range of services to help you with your coursework and research.

How to submit an assignment

Submitting to turnitin.

When you submit your assessments in Canvas, they usually get processed through Turnitin. Turnitin is a text matching tool that can tell you how similar your work is to other texts, like articles, books, webpages and other previously submitted assessments.

After the submission, you can view the files and comments you have submitted but you can't change them.

If, after submitting your assignment you realise that you've sent the wrong file, you need to contact your lecturer to clear your assignment attempt before you can re-submit.

Late submission of assessments

Information outlining marking penalties for late submission (of up to 5 days) for summative assessments will be available for all courses in your course materials.

Examples of penalties for late submission include:

  • A reduction of one grade per day up to a maximum of 5 days (for those using marks this represents the equivalent of reducing an overall mark by 5% each day)
  • An incremental reduction of the highest possible mark for each learning outcome within the relevant assessment
  • Assessments submitted more than 5 days late (without an approved Special Consideration Application) will not be marked

Help with assessments

If you need help with assessments, you can use the following services:

  • Studiosity – a personal online help service that’s available after-hours and free of charge to provide guidance and feedback on a range of academic skills
  • AUT library – use the library to access assessment advice and resources including  workshops
  • Canvas – get help with your researching, reading, writing, presenting, editing, publishing and referencing
